Higher order numerical methods for SDEs without globally monotone coefficients

In the present work, we delve into further study of numerical approximations of SDEs with non-globally monotone coefficients. We design and analyze a new family of stopped increment-tamed time discretization schemes of Euler, Milstein and order 1.5 type for such SDEs. By formulating a novel unified framework, the proposed methods are shown to possess the exponential integrability properties, which are crucial to recovering convergence rates in the non-global monotone setting. Armed with such exponential integrability properties and by the arguments of perturbation estimates, we successfully identify the optimal strong convergence rates of the aforementioned methods in the non-global monotone setting. Numerical experiments are finally presented to corroborate the theoretical results.

Antithetic multilevel Monte Carlo method for approximations of SDEs with non-globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients

In the field of computational finance, one is commonly interested in the expected value of a financial derivative whose payoff depends on the solution of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). For multi-dimensional SDEs with non-commutative diffusion coefficients in the globally Lipschitz setting, a kind of one-half order truncated Milstein-type scheme without Lévy areas was recently introduced by Giles and Szpruch (2014), which combined with the antithetic multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) gives the optimal overall computational cost $\mathcal{O}(ε^{-2})$ for the required target accuracy $ε$. Nevertheless, many nonlinear SDEs in applications have non-globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients and the corresponding theoretical guarantees for antithetic MLMC are absent in the literature. In the present work, we aim to fill the gap and analyze antithetic MLMC in a non-globally Lipschitz setting. First, we propose a family of modified Milstein-type schemes without Lévy areas to approximate SDEs with non-globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients. The expected one-half order of strong convergence is recovered in a non-globally Lipschitz setting, where even the diffusion coefficients are allowed to grow superlinearly. This then helps us to analyze the relevant variance of the multilevel estimator and the optimal computational cost is finally achieved for the antithetic MLMC. Since getting rid of the Lévy areas destroys the martingale properties of the scheme, the analysis of both the convergence rate and the desired variance becomes highly non-trivial in the non-globally Lipschitz setting. By introducing an auxiliary approximation process, we develop non-standard arguments to overcome the essential difficulties. Numerical experiments are provided to confirm the theoretical findings.

Concept Conductor: Orchestrating Multiple Personalized Concepts in Text-to-Image Synthesis

The customization of text-to-image models has seen significant advancements, yet generating multiple personalized concepts remains a challenging task. Current methods struggle with attribute leakage and layout confusion when handling multiple concepts, leading to reduced concept fidelity and semantic consistency. In this work, we introduce a novel training-free framework, Concept Conductor, designed to ensure visual fidelity and correct layout in multi-concept customization. Concept Conductor isolates the sampling processes of multiple custom models to prevent attribute leakage between different concepts and corrects erroneous layouts through self-attention-based spatial guidance. Additionally, we present a concept injection technique that employs shape-aware masks to specify the generation area for each concept. This technique injects the structure and appearance of personalized concepts through feature fusion in the attention layers, ensuring harmony in the final image. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that Concept Conductor can consistently generate composite images with accurate layouts while preserving the visual details of each concept. Compared to existing baselines, Concept Conductor shows significant performance improvements. Our method supports the combination of any number of concepts and maintains high fidelity even when dealing with visually similar concepts. The code and models are available at https://github.com/Nihukat/Concept-Conductor.

An unconditional boundary and dynamics preserving scheme for the stochastic epidemic model

In the present article, we construct a logarithm transformation based Milstein-type method for the stochastic susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic model evolving in the domain (0,N). The new scheme is explicit and unconditionally boundary and dynamics preserving, when used to solve the stochastic SIS epidemic model. Also, it is proved that the scheme has a strong convergence rate of order one. Different from existing time discretization schemes, the newly proposed scheme for any time step size h > 0, not only produces numerical approximations living in the entire domain (0,N), but also unconditionally reproduces the extinction and persistence behavior of the original model, with no additional requirements imposed on the model parameters. Numerical experiments are presented to verify our theoretical findings.

In-context Prompt Learning for Test-time Vision Recognition with Frozen Vision-language Model

Current pre-trained vision-language models, such as CLIP, have demonstrated remarkable zero-shot generalization capabilities across various downstream tasks. However, their performance significantly degrades when test inputs exhibit different distributions. In this paper, we explore the concept of test-time prompt tuning (TTPT), which facilitates the adaptation of the CLIP model to novel downstream tasks through a one-step unsupervised optimization that involves only test samples. Inspired by in-context learning in natural language processing (NLP), we propose In-Context Prompt Learning (InCPL) for test-time visual recognition tasks, which empowers a pre-trained vision-language model with labeled examples as context information on downstream task. Specifically, InCPL associates a new test sample with very few labeled examples (sometimes just one) as context information, enabling reliable label estimation for the test sample and facilitating model adaptation. To achieve this, InCPL employs an efficient language-to-vision translator to explore the textual prior information for visual prompt learning. Further, we introduce a context-aware unsupervised loss to optimize visual prompts tailored to test samples. Finally, we design a cyclic learning strategy for visual and textual prompts to ensure mutual synergy across different modalities. This enables a pre-trained, frozen CLIP model to adapt to any task using its learned adaptive prompt. Our method demonstrates superior performance and achieves state-of-the-art results across various downstream datasets.

Unconditionally positivity-preserving approximations of the Ait-Sahalia type model: Explicit Milstein-type schemes

The present article aims to design and analyze efficient first-order strong schemes for a generalized Aït-Sahalia type model arising in mathematical finance and evolving in a positive domain $(0, \infty)$, which possesses a diffusion term with superlinear growth and a highly nonlinear drift that blows up at the origin. Such a complicated structure of the model unavoidably causes essential difficulties in the construction and convergence analysis of time discretizations. By incorporating implicitness in the term $α_{-1} x^{-1}$ and a corrective mapping $Φ_h$ in the recursion, we develop a novel class of explicit and unconditionally positivity-preserving (i.e., for any step-size $h>0$) Milstein-type schemes for the underlying model. In both non-critical and general critical cases, we introduce a novel approach to analyze mean-square error bounds of the novel schemes, without relying on a priori high-order moment bounds of the numerical approximations. The expected order-one mean-square convergence is attained for the proposed scheme. The above theoretical guarantee can be used to justify the optimal complexity of the Multilevel Monte Carlo method. Numerical experiments are finally provided to verify the theoretical findings.

Phased Instruction Fine-Tuning for Large Language Models

Instruction Fine-Tuning enhances pre-trained language models from basic next-word prediction to complex instruction-following. However, existing One-off Instruction Fine-Tuning (One-off IFT) method, applied on a diverse instruction, may not effectively boost models' adherence to instructions due to the simultaneous handling of varying instruction complexities. To improve this, Phased Instruction Fine-Tuning (Phased IFT) is proposed, based on the idea that learning to follow instructions is a gradual process. It assesses instruction difficulty using GPT-4, divides the instruction data into subsets of increasing difficulty, and uptrains the model sequentially on these subsets. Experiments with Llama-2 7B/13B/70B, Llama3 8/70B and Mistral-7B models using Alpaca data show that Phased IFT significantly outperforms One-off IFT, supporting the progressive alignment hypothesis and providing a simple and efficient way to enhance large language models. Codes and datasets from our experiments are freely available at https://github.com/xubuvd/PhasedSFT.

Strong convergence rates for long-time approximations of SDEs with non-globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients

This paper is concerned with long-time strong approximations of SDEs with non-globally Lipschitz coefficients.Under certain non-globally Lipschitz conditions, a long-time version of fundamental strong convergence theorem is established for general one-step time discretization schemes. With the aid of the fundamental strong convergence theorem, we prove the expected strong convergence rate over infinite time for two types of schemes such as the backward Euler method and the projected Euler method in non-globally Lipschitz settings. Numerical examples are finally reported to confirm our findings.

DiffHarmony: Latent Diffusion Model Meets Image Harmonization

Image harmonization, which involves adjusting the foreground of a composite image to attain a unified visual consistency with the background, can be conceptualized as an image-to-image translation task. Diffusion models have recently promoted the rapid development of image-to-image translation tasks . However, training diffusion models from scratch is computationally intensive. Fine-tuning pre-trained latent diffusion models entails dealing with the reconstruction error induced by the image compression autoencoder, making it unsuitable for image generation tasks that involve pixel-level evaluation metrics. To deal with these issues, in this paper, we first adapt a pre-trained latent diffusion model to the image harmonization task to generate the harmonious but potentially blurry initial images. Then we implement two strategies: utilizing higher-resolution images during inference and incorporating an additional refinement stage, to further enhance the clarity of the initially harmonized images. Extensive experiments on iHarmony4 datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method. The code and model will be made publicly available at https://github.com/nicecv/DiffHarmony .

Unconditionally positivity-preserving explicit Euler-type schemes for a generalized Ait-Sahalia model

The present work is devoted to strong approximations of a generalized Aït-Sahalia model arising from mathematical finance. The numerical study of the considered model faces essential difficulties caused by a drift that blows up at the origin, highly nonlinear drift and diffusion coefficients and positivity-preserving requirement. In this paper, a novel explicit Euler-type scheme is proposed, which is easily implementable and able to preserve positivity of the original model unconditionally, i.e., for any time step-size $h >0$. A mean-square convergence rate of order $0.5$ is also obtained for the proposed scheme in both non-critical and general critical cases. Our work is motivated by the need to justify the multi-level Monte Carlo (MLMC) simulations for the underlying model, where the rate of mean-square convergence is required and the preservation of positivity is desirable particularly for large discretization time steps. Numerical experiments are finally provided to confirm the theoretical findings.

Towards Robustness Analysis of E-Commerce Ranking System

Information retrieval (IR) is a pivotal component in various applications. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have enabled the integration of ML algorithms into IR, particularly in ranking systems. While there is a plethora of research on the robustness of ML-based ranking systems, these studies largely neglect commercial e-commerce systems and fail to establish a connection between real-world and manipulated query relevance. In this paper, we present the first systematic measurement study on the robustness of e-commerce ranking systems. We define robustness as the consistency of ranking outcomes for semantically identical queries. To quantitatively analyze robustness, we propose a novel metric that considers both ranking position and item-specific information that are absent in existing metrics. Our large-scale measurement study with real-world data from e-commerce retailers reveals an open opportunity to measure and improve robustness since semantically identical queries often yield inconsistent ranking results. Based on our observations, we propose several solution directions to enhance robustness, such as the use of Large Language Models. Note that the issue of robustness discussed herein does not constitute an error or oversight. Rather, in scenarios where there exists a vast array of choices, it is feasible to present a multitude of products in various permutations, all of which could be equally appealing. However, this extensive selection may lead to customer confusion. As e-commerce retailers use various techniques to improve the quality of search results, we hope that this research offers valuable guidance for measuring the robustness of the ranking systems.

Order-One Convergence of the Backward Euler Method for Random Periodic Solutions of Semilinear SDEs

In this paper, we revisit the backward Euler method for numerical approximations of random periodic solutions of semilinear SDEs with additive noise. Improved $L^{p}$-estimates of the random periodic solutions of the considered SDEs are obtained under a more relaxed condition compared to literature. The backward Euler scheme is proved to converge with an order one in the mean square sense, which also improves the existing order-half convergence. Numerical examples are presented to verify our theoretical analysis.

Joint User Association, Interference Cancellation and Power Control for Multi-IRS Assisted UAV Communications

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications are expected to alleviate the load of ground base stations in a cost-effective way. Existing studies mainly focus on the deployment and resource allocation of a single IRS instead of multiple IRSs, whereas it is extremely challenging for joint multi-IRS multi-user association in UAV communications with constrained reflecting resources and dynamic scenarios. To address the aforementioned challenges, we propose a new optimization algorithm for joint IRS-user association, trajectory optimization of UAVs, successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding order scheduling and power allocation to maximize system energy efficiency. We first propose an inverse soft-Q learning-based algorithm to optimize multi-IRS multi-user association. Then, SCA and Dinkelbach-based algorithm are leveraged to optimize UAV trajectory followed by the optimization of SIC decoding order scheduling and power allocation. Finally, theoretical analysis and performance results show significant advantages of the designed algorithm in convergence rate and energy efficiency.

Wireless Powered Metaverse: Joint Task Scheduling and Trajectory Design for Multi-Devices and Multi-UAVs

To support the running of human-centric metaverse applications on mobile devices, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-assisted Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing (WPMEC) is promising to compensate for limited computational capabilities and energy supplies of mobile devices. The high-speed computational processing demands and significant energy consumption of metaverse applications require joint resource scheduling of multiple devices and UAVs, but existing WPMEC solutions address either device or UAV scheduling due to the complexity of combinatorial optimization. To solve the above challenge, we propose a two-stage alternating optimization algorithm based on multi-task Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to jointly allocate charging time, schedule computation tasks, and optimize trajectory of UAVs and mobile devices in a wireless powered metaverse scenario. First, considering energy constraints of both UAVs and mobile devices, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the computation efficiency of the system. Second, we propose a heuristic algorithm to efficiently perform time allocation and charging scheduling for mobile devices. Following this, we design a multi-task DRL scheme to make charging scheduling and trajectory design decisions for UAVs. Finally, theoretical analysis and performance results demonstrate that our algorithm exhibits significant advantages over representative methods in terms of convergence speed and average computation efficiency.

A Survey on Off-chain Networks: Frameworks, Technologies, Solutions and Challenges

Blockchain has received increasing attention in academia and industry. However, the increasing transaction volumes and limited on-chain storage underscore scalability as a key challenge hindering the widespread adoption of blockchain. Fortunately, off-chain networks that enable transactions outside the blockchain show promising potential to mitigate the scalability challenge. Off-chain solutions that address blockchain scalability hurdles, such as payment channel networks, facilitate secure and fast off-chain transactions, thus relieving the main chain's strain. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of key technologies, solutions, and challenges of off-chain networks. First, we introduce the background of off-chain networks encompassing design motivation, framework, overview, and application scenarios. We then review the key issues and technologies associated with off-chain networks. Subsequently, we summarize the mainstream solutions for the corresponding key issues. Finally, we discuss some research challenges and open issues in this area.

Explicit Alignment and Many-to-many Entailment Based Reasoning for Conversational Machine Reading

Conversational Machine Reading (CMR) requires answering a user's initial question through multi-turn dialogue interactions based on a given document. Although there exist many effective methods, they largely neglected the alignment between the document and the user-provided information, which significantly affects the intermediate decision-making and subsequent follow-up question generation. To address this issue, we propose a pipeline framework that (1) aligns the aforementioned two sides in an explicit way, (2)makes decisions using a lightweight many-to-many entailment reasoning module, and (3) directly generates follow-up questions based on the document and previously asked questions. Our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art in micro-accuracy and ranks the first place on the public leaderboard of the CMR benchmark dataset ShARC.

A Task-oriented Dialog Model with Task-progressive and Policy-aware Pre-training

Pre-trained conversation models (PCMs) have achieved promising progress in recent years. However, existing PCMs for Task-oriented dialog (TOD) are insufficient for capturing the sequential nature of the TOD-related tasks, as well as for learning dialog policy information. To alleviate these problems, this paper proposes a task-progressive PCM with two policy-aware pre-training tasks. The model is pre-trained through three stages where TOD-related tasks are progressively employed according to the task logic of the TOD system. A global policy consistency task is designed to capture the multi-turn dialog policy sequential relation, and an act-based contrastive learning task is designed to capture similarities among samples with the same dialog policy. Our model achieves better results on both MultiWOZ and In-Car end-to-end dialog modeling benchmarks with only 18\% parameters and 25\% pre-training data compared to the previous state-of-the-art PCM, GALAXY.
