Comparison of deuterium retention in tungsten exposed to deuterium plasma and gas

Deuterium(D) retention behavior in tungsten(W) exposed to deuterium plasma and gas was studied by means of thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS): deuterium plasma exposure in which W was exposed to D plamsa with 35 eV/D at 393 K to the fluence of 3.8E24 D/m2; D2 gas charging in which W was exposed to D2 gas of 500 kPa at 773 K for 4 hours. TDS shows that the total D retention in plasma exposure W is 1.00E22 D/m2, one order of magnitude higher than that of gas charging W; however, the D2 desorption peak of gas charging W is 952 K, much higher than 691 K of plasma exposure W. The detrapping energies of deuterium were determined experimentally from the measured peak temperatures at different heating rates and were found to be 2.17 eV for gas charging W and 1.04 eV for plasma exposure W, respectively.

Penalized Sieve GEL for Weighted Average Derivatives of Nonparametric Quantile IV Regressions

This paper considers estimation and inference for a weighted average derivative (WAD) of a nonparametric quantile instrumental variables regression (NPQIV). NPQIV is a non-separable and nonlinear ill-posed inverse problem, which might be why there is no published work on the asymptotic properties of any estimator of its WAD. We first characterize the semiparametric efficiency bound for a WAD of a NPQIV, which, unfortunately, depends on an unknown conditional derivative operator and hence an unknown degree of ill-posedness, making it difficult to know if the information bound is singular or not. In either case, we propose a penalized sieve generalized empirical likelihood (GEL) estimation and inference procedure, which is based on the unconditional WAD moment restriction and an increasing number of unconditional moments that are implied by the conditional NPQIV restriction, where the unknown quantile function is approximated by a penalized sieve. Under some regularity conditions, we show that the self-normalized penalized sieve GEL estimator of the WAD of a NPQIV is asymptotically standard normal. We also show that the quasi likelihood ratio statistic based on the penalized sieve GEL criterion is asymptotically chi-square distributed regardless of whether or not the information bound is singular.

Automated Prototype Generation from Formal Requirements Model

Prototyping is an effective and efficient way of requirement validation to avoid introducing errors in the early stage of software development. However, manually developing a prototype of a software system requires additional efforts, which would increase the overall cost of software development. In this paper, we present an approach with a developed tool to automatic generation of prototypes from formal requirements models. A requirements model consists of a use case diagram, a conceptual class diagram, use case definitions specified by system sequence diagrams and the contracts of their system operations. We propose a method to decompose a contract into executable parts and non-executable parts. A set of transformation rules is given to decompose the executable part into pre-implemented primitive operations. A non-executable part is usually realized by significant algorithms such as sorting a list, finding the shortest path or domain-specific computation. It can be implemented manually or by using existing code. A CASE tool is developed that provides an interface for developers to develop a program for each non-executable part of a contract, and automatically transforms the executables into sequences of pre-implemented primitive operations. We have conducted four cases studies with over 50 use cases. The experimental result shows that the 93.65% of requirement specifications are executable, and only 6.35% are non-executable such as sorting and event-call, which can be implemented by developers manually or invoking the APIs of advanced algorithms in Java library. The one second generated the prototype of a case study requires approximate nine hours manual implementation by a skilled programmer. Overall, the result is satisfiable, and the proposed approach with the developed CASE tool can be applied to the software industry for requirements engineering.

Asymptotic behavior of spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator in Helmhotz system

In this paper, we are concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the Neumann-Poincare operator for Helmholtz system. By analyzing the asymptotic behavior of spherical Bessel function near the origin and/or approach higher order, we prove the asymptotic behavior of spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator when frequency is small enough and/or the order is large enough. The results show that spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator is continuous at the origin and converges to zero from the complex plane in general.

A new radial basis function collocation method based on the quasi-uniform nodes for 2D fractional wave equation

We mainly concerned with a decoupled fractional Laplacian wave equation in this paper. A new time-space domain radial basis function (RBF) collocation method is introduced to solve the fractional wave equation, which describes seismic wave propagation in attenuation media. The directional fractional Laplacian is adopted to cope with the fractional Laplacian of RBFs. In order to increase the computational efficiency, we introduced the quasi-uniform nodes configuration scheme, which is suitable for mesh-free discretization of wave equations. The comparison between the new method and the commonly-used pseudo-spectral method are implemented on square homogeneous models with different model size. The CPU time and relative errors of different methods show that the quasi-uniform configuration scheme provides better performance and the calculation efficiency advantage is significantly prominent as the computation domain increases. The relative errors indicate that the RBF collocation method with quasi-uniform configuration could improve the computational efficiency effectively and provide satisfactory accuracy. This advantage was especially highlighted in complex models, where the new approach achieved the same accuracy with only a half number of points. The implementation on the 2D complex model further demonstrated the accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility of the proposed new method.

Radial basis function collocation method for decoupled fractional Laplacian wave equations

Decoupled fractional Laplacian wave equation can describe the seismic wave propagation in attenuating media. Fourier pseudospectral implementations, which solve the equation in spatial frequency domain, are the only existing methods for solving the equation. For the earth media with curved boundaries, the pseudospectral methods could be less attractive to handle the irregular computational domains. In the paper, we propose a radial basis function collocation method that can easily tackle the irregular domain problems. Unlike the pseudospectral methods, the proposed method solves the equation in physical variable domain. The directional fractional Laplacian is chosen from varied definitions of fractional Laplacian. Particularly, the vector Grünwald-Letnikov formula is employed to approximate fractional directional derivative of radial basis function. The convergence and stability of the method are numerically investigated by using the synthetic solution and the long-time simulations, respectively. The method's flexibility is studied by considering homogeneous and multi-layer media having regular and irregular geometric boundaries.

Monte Carlo Confidence Sets for Identified Sets

In complicated/nonlinear parametric models, it is generally hard to know whether the model parameters are point identified. We provide computationally attractive procedures to construct confidence sets (CSs) for identified sets of full parameters and of subvectors in models defined through a likelihood or a vector of moment equalities or inequalities. These CSs are based on level sets of optimal sample criterion functions (such as likelihood or optimally-weighted or continuously-updated GMM criterions). The level sets are constructed using cutoffs that are computed via Monte Carlo (MC) simulations directly from the quasi-posterior distributions of the criterions. We establish new Bernstein-von Mises (or Bayesian Wilks) type theorems for the quasi-posterior distributions of the quasi-likelihood ratio (QLR) and profile QLR in partially-identified regular models and some non-regular models. These results imply that our MC CSs have exact asymptotic frequentist coverage for identified sets of full parameters and of subvectors in partially-identified regular models, and have valid but potentially conservative coverage in models with reduced-form parameters on the boundary. Our MC CSs for identified sets of subvectors are shown to have exact asymptotic coverage in models with singularities. We also provide results on uniform validity of our CSs over classes of DGPs that include point and partially identified models. We demonstrate good finite-sample coverage properties of our procedures in two simulation experiments. Finally, our procedures are applied to two non-trivial empirical examples: an airline entry game and a model of trade flows.

Prevalent Intrinsic Emission from Nonaromatic Amino Acids and Poly(Amino Acids)

Nonaromatic amino acids are generally believed to be nonemissive, owing to their lack of apparently remarkable conjugation within individual molecules. Here we report the intrinsic visible emission of nonaromatic amino acids and poly(amino acids) in concentrated solutions and solid powders. This unique and widespread luminescent characteristic can be well rationalized by the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism, namely the clustering of nonconventional chromophores (i.e. amino, carbonyl, and hydroxyl) and subsequent electron cloud overlap with simultaneously conformation rigidification. Such CTE mechanism is further supported by the single crystal structure analysis. Besides prompt fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are also detected from the solids. Moreover, persistent RTP is observed in the powders of exampled poly(amino acid) of ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-PLL) after ceasing UV irradiation. These results not only illustrate the feasibility of employing the building blocks of nonaromatic amino acids in the exploration of new luminescent biomolecules, but also provide significant implications for the RTP of peptides and proteins at aggregated or crystalline states.

Optimal Sup-norm Rates and Uniform Inference on Nonlinear Functionals of Nonparametric IV Regression

This paper makes several important contributions to the literature about nonparametric instrumental variables (NPIV) estimation and inference on a structural function $h_0$ and its functionals. First, we derive sup-norm convergence rates for computationally simple sieve NPIV (series 2SLS) estimators of $h_0$ and its derivatives. Second, we derive a lower bound that describes the best possible (minimax) sup-norm rates of estimating $h_0$ and its derivatives, and show that the sieve NPIV estimator can attain the minimax rates when $h_0$ is approximated via a spline or wavelet sieve. Our optimal sup-norm rates surprisingly coincide with the optimal root-mean-squared rates for severely ill-posed problems, and are only a logarithmic factor slower than the optimal root-mean-squared rates for mildly ill-posed problems. Third, we use our sup-norm rates to establish the uniform Gaussian process strong approximations and the score bootstrap uniform confidence bands (UCBs) for collections of nonlinear functionals of $h_0$ under primitive conditions, allowing for mildly and severely ill-posed problems. Fourth, as applications, we obtain the first asymptotic pointwise and uniform inference results for plug-in sieve t-statistics of exact consumer surplus (CS) and deadweight loss (DL) welfare functionals under low-level conditions when demand is estimated via sieve NPIV. Empiricists could read our real data application of UCBs for exact CS and DL functionals of gasoline demand that reveals interesting patterns and is applicable to other markets.

Towards Concolic Testing for Hybrid Systems

Hybrid systems exhibit both continuous and discrete behavior. Analyzing hybrid systems is known to be hard. Inspired by the idea of concolic testing (of programs), we investigate whether we can combine random sampling and symbolic execution in order to effectively verify hybrid systems. We identify a sufficient condition under which such a combination is more effective than random sampling. Furthermore, we analyze different strategies of combining random sampling and symbolic execution and propose an algorithm which allows us to dynamically switch between them so as to reduce the overall cost. Our method has been implemented as a web-based checker named HyChecker. HyChecker has been evaluated with benchmark hybrid systems and a water treatment system in order to test its effectiveness.

Sieve Wald and QLR Inferences on Semi/nonparametric Conditional Moment Models

This paper considers inference on functionals of semi/nonparametric conditional moment restrictions with possibly nonsmooth generalized residuals, which include all of the (nonlinear) nonparametric instrumental variables (IV) as special cases. These models are often ill-posed and hence it is difficult to verify whether a (possibly nonlinear) functional is root-$n$ estimable or not. We provide computationally simple, unified inference procedures that are asymptotically valid regardless of whether a functional is root-$n$ estimable or not. We establish the following new useful results: (1) the asymptotic normality of a plug-in penalized sieve minimum distance (PSMD) estimator of a (possibly nonlinear) functional; (2) the consistency of simple sieve variance estimators for the plug-in PSMD estimator, and hence the asymptotic chi-square distribution of the sieve Wald statistic; (3) the asymptotic chi-square distribution of an optimally weighted sieve quasi likelihood ratio (QLR) test under the null hypothesis; (4) the asymptotic tight distribution of a non-optimally weighted sieve QLR statistic under the null; (5) the consistency of generalized residual bootstrap sieve Wald and QLR tests; (6) local power properties of sieve Wald and QLR tests and of their bootstrap versions; (7) asymptotic properties of sieve Wald and SQLR for functionals of increasing dimension. Simulation studies and an empirical illustration of a nonparametric quantile IV regression are presented.

Optimal Uniform Convergence Rates and Asymptotic Normality for Series Estimators Under Weak Dependence and Weak Conditions

We show that spline and wavelet series regression estimators for weakly dependent regressors attain the optimal uniform (i.e. sup-norm) convergence rate $(n/\log n)^{-p/(2p+d)}$ of Stone (1982), where $d$ is the number of regressors and $p$ is the smoothness of the regression function. The optimal rate is achieved even for heavy-tailed martingale difference errors with finite $(2+(d/p))$th absolute moment for $d/p<2$. We also establish the asymptotic normality of t statistics for possibly nonlinear, irregular functionals of the conditional mean function under weak conditions. The results are proved by deriving a new exponential inequality for sums of weakly dependent random matrices, which is of independent interest.

High dimensional generalized empirical likelihood for moment restrictions with dependent data

This paper considers the maximum generalized empirical likelihood (GEL) estimation and inference on parameters identified by high dimensional moment restrictions with weakly dependent data when the dimensions of the moment restrictions and the parameters diverge along with the sample size. The consistency with rates and the asymptotic normality of the GEL estimator are obtained by properly restricting the growth rates of the dimensions of the parameters and the moment restrictions, as well as the degree of data dependence. It is shown that even in the high dimensional time series setting, the GEL ratio can still behave like a chi-square random variable asymptotically. A consistent test for the over-identification is proposed. A penalized GEL method is also provided for estimation under sparsity setting.

Self-normalized Cramér Type Moderate Deviations under Dependence

We establish a Cramér-type moderate deviation result for self-normalized sums of weakly dependent random variables, where the moment requirement is much weaker than the non-self-normalized counterpart. The range of the moderate deviation is shown to depend on the moment condition and the degree of dependence of the underlying processes. We consider two types of self-normalization: the big-block-small-block scheme and the interlacing or equal-block scheme. Simulation study shows that the latter can have a better finite-sample performance. Our result is applied to multiple testing and construction of simultaneous confidence intervals for high-dimensional time series mean vectors.

Optimal Uniform Convergence Rates for Sieve Nonparametric Instrumental Variables Regression

We study the problem of nonparametric regression when the regressor is endogenous, which is an important nonparametric instrumental variables (NPIV) regression in econometrics and a difficult ill-posed inverse problem with unknown operator in statistics. We first establish a general upper bound on the sup-norm (uniform) convergence rate of a sieve estimator, allowing for endogenous regressors and weakly dependent data. This result leads to the optimal sup-norm convergence rates for spline and wavelet least squares regression estimators under weakly dependent data and heavy-tailed error terms. This upper bound also yields the sup-norm convergence rates for sieve NPIV estimators under i.i.d. data: the rates coincide with the known optimal $L^2$-norm rates for severely ill-posed problems, and are power of $\log(n)$ slower than the optimal $L^2$-norm rates for mildly ill-posed problems. We then establish the minimax risk lower bound in sup-norm loss, which coincides with our upper bounds on sup-norm rates for the spline and wavelet sieve NPIV estimators. This sup-norm rate optimality provides another justification for the wide application of sieve NPIV estimators. Useful results on weakly-dependent random matrices are also provided.

Local Identification of Nonparametric and Semiparametric Models

In parametric, nonlinear structural models a classical sufficient condition for local identification, like Fisher (1966) and Rothenberg (1971), is that the vector of moment conditions is differentiable at the true parameter with full rank derivative matrix. We derive an analogous result for the nonparametric, nonlinear structural models, establishing conditions under which an infinite-dimensional analog of the full rank condition is sufficient for local identification. Importantly, we show that additional conditions are often needed in nonlinear, nonparametric models to avoid nonlinearities overwhelming linear effects. We give restrictions on a neighborhood of the true value that are sufficient for local identification. We apply these results to obtain new, primitive identification conditions in several important models, including nonseparable quantile instrumental variable (IV) models, single-index IV models, and semiparametric consumption-based asset pricing models.

Efficient estimation of copula-based semiparametric Markov models

This paper considers the efficient estimation of copula-based semiparametric strictly stationary Markov models. These models are characterized by nonparametric invariant (one-dimensional marginal) distributions and parametric bivariate copula functions where the copulas capture temporal dependence and tail dependence of the processes. The Markov processes generated via tail dependent copulas may look highly persistent and are useful for financial and economic applications. We first show that Markov processes generated via Clayton, Gumbel and Student's $t$ copulas and their survival copulas are all geometrically ergodic. We then propose a sieve maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) for the copula parameter, the invariant distribution and the conditional quantiles. We show that the sieve MLEs of any smooth functional is root-$n$ consistent, asymptotically normal and efficient and that their sieve likelihood ratio statistics are asymptotically chi-square distributed. Monte Carlo studies indicate that, even for Markov models generated via tail dependent copulas and fat-tailed marginals, our sieve MLEs perform very well.

Semiparametric efficiency in GMM models with auxiliary data

We study semiparametric efficiency bounds and efficient estimation of parameters defined through general moment restrictions with missing data. Identification relies on auxiliary data containing information about the distribution of the missing variables conditional on proxy variables that are observed in both the primary and the auxiliary database, when such distribution is common to the two data sets. The auxiliary sample can be independent of the primary sample, or can be a subset of it. For both cases, we derive bounds when the probability of missing data given the proxy variables is unknown, or known, or belongs to a correctly specified parametric family. We find that the conditional probability is not ancillary when the two samples are independent. For all cases, we discuss efficient semiparametric estimators. An estimator based on a conditional expectation projection is shown to require milder regularity conditions than one based on inverse probability weighting.
