A Simultaneous Denoising and Dereverberation Framework with Target Decoupling

Background noise and room reverberation are regarded as two major factors to degrade the subjective speech quality. In this paper, we propose an integrated framework to address simultaneous denoising and dereverberation under complicated scenario environments. It adopts a chain optimization strategy and designs four sub-stages accordingly. In the first two stages, we decouple the multi-task learning w.r.t. complex spectrum into magnitude and phase, and only implement noise and reverberation removal in the magnitude domain. Based on the estimated priors above, we further polish the spectrum in the third stage, where both magnitude and phase information are explicitly repaired with the residual learning. Due to the data mismatch and nonlinear effect of DNNs, the residual noise often exists in the DNN-processed spectrum. To resolve the problem, we adopt a light-weight algorithm as the post-processing module to capture and suppress the residual noise in the non-active regions. In the Interspeech 2021 Deep Noise Suppression (DNS) Challenge, our submitted system ranked top-1 for the real-time track in terms of Mean Opinion Score (MOS) with ITU-T P.835 framework

Barocaloric thermal batteries

Nowadays the world is facing a prominent paradox regarding thermal energy. The production of heat accounts for more than 50% of global final energy consumption while the waste heat potential analysis reveals that 72% of the global primary energy consumption is lost after conversion mainly in the form of heat. Towards global decarbonization, it is of vital importance to establish a solution to thermal energy utilization under full control. Here, we propose and realize an unprecedented concept -- barocaloric thermal batteries based on the inverse colossal barocaloric effect of NH4SCN. Thermal charging is initialized upon pressurization through an order-to-disorder phase transition below 364 K and in turn the discharging of 43 J g-1, which are eleven times more than the input mechanical energy, occurs on demand at depressurization at lower temperatures. The discharging is also manifested as a directly measured temperature rise of 12 K. The thermodynamic equilibrium nature of the pressure-restrained heat-carrying phase guarantees stable storage and/or transport over a variety of temporal and/or spatial scales. The barocaloric thermal batteries reinforced by their solid microscopic mechanism are expected to significantly advance the ability to take advantage of waste heat.

Learning to Inference with Early Exit in the Progressive Speech Enhancement

In real scenarios, it is often necessary and significant to control the inference speed of speech enhancement systems under different conditions. To this end, we propose a stage-wise adaptive inference approach with early exit mechanism for progressive speech enhancement. Specifically, in each stage, once the spectral distance between adjacent stages lowers the empirically preset threshold, the inference will terminate and output the estimation, which can effectively accelerate the inference speed. To further improve the performance of existing speech enhancement systems, PL-CRN++ is proposed, which is an improved version over our preliminary work PL-CRN and combines stage recurrent mechanism and complex spectral mapping. Extensive experiments are conducted on the TIMIT corpus, the results demonstrate the superiority of our system over state-of-the-art baselines in terms of PESQ, ESTOI and DNSMOS. Moreover, by adjusting the threshold, we can easily control the inference efficiency while sustaining the system performance.

Glance and Gaze: A Collaborative Learning Framework for Single-channel Speech Enhancement

The capability of the human to pay attention to both coarse and fine-grained regions has been applied to computer vision tasks. Motivated by that, we propose a collaborative learning framework in the complex domain for monaural noise suppression. The proposed system consists of two principal modules, namely spectral feature extraction module (FEM) and stacked glance-gaze modules (GGMs). In FEM, the UNet-block is introduced after each convolution layer, enabling the feature recalibration from multiple scales. In each GGM, we decompose the multi-target optimization in the complex spectrum into two sub-tasks. Specifically, the glance path aims to suppress the noise in the magnitude domain to obtain a coarse estimation, and meanwhile, the gaze path attempts to compensate for the lost spectral detail in the complex domain. The two paths work collaboratively and facilitate spectral estimation from complementary perspectives. Besides, by repeatedly unfolding the GGMs, the intermediate result can be iteratively refined across stages and lead to the ultimate estimation of the spectrum. The experiments are conducted on the WSJ0-SI84, DNS-Challenge dataset, and Voicebank+Demand dataset. Results show that the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance over previous advanced systems on the WSJ0-SI84 and DNS-Challenge dataset, and meanwhile, competitive performance is achieved on the Voicebank+Demand corpus.

Universal quantum transition from superconducting to insulating states in pressurized Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ superconductors

Copper oxide superconductors have continually fascinated the communities of condensed matter physics and material sciences because they host the highest ambient-pressure superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and mysterious physics. Searching for the universal correlation between the superconducting state and its normal state or neighboring ground state is believed to be an effective way for finding clues to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the superconductivity. One of the common pictures for the copper oxide superconductors is that a well-behaved metallic phase will present after the superconductivity is entirely suppressed by chemical doping or application of the magnetic field. Here, we report a different observation of universal quantum transition from superconducting state to insulating-like state under pressure in the under-, optimally- and over-doped Bi2212 superconductors with two CuO2 planes in a unit cell. The same phenomenon has been also found in the Bi2201 superconductor with one CuO2 plane and the Bi2223 superconductor with three CuO2 planes in a unit cell. These results not only provide fresh information but also pose a new challenge for achieving a unified understanding on the underlying physics of the high-Tc superconductivity.

Superconductivity in Layered van der Waals Hydrogenated Germanene at High Pressure

Structural and superconducting transitions of layered van der Waals (vdW) hydrogenated germanene (GeH) were observed under high-pressure compression and decompression processes. GeH possesses a superconducting transition at critical temperature (Tc) of 5.41 K at 8.39 GPa. A crystalline to amorphous transition occurs at 16.80 GPa while superconductivity remains. An abnormally increased Tc up to 6.1 K has been observed in the decompression process while the GeH remained amorphous. Thorough in-situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and in-situ high-pressure Raman spectroscopy with the density functional theory simulations suggest that the superconductivity of GeH should be attributed to the increased density of states at the Fermi level as well as the enhanced electron-phonon coupling effect under high pressure. The decompression-driven superconductivity enhancement arises from pressure-induced phonon softening related to an in-plane Ge-Ge phonon mode. As an amorphous metal hydride superconductor, GeH provides a platform to study amorphous hydride superconductivity in layered vdW materials.

Abnormal Staebler-Wronski effect of amorphous silicon

Great achievements in last five years, such as record-efficient amorphous/crystalline silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells and cutting-edge perovskite/SHJ tandem solar cells, place hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) at the forefront of emerging photovoltaics. Due to the extremely low doping efficiency of trivalent boron (B) in amorphous tetravalent silicon, light harvesting of aforementioned devices are limited by their fill factors (FF), which is a direct metric of the charge carrier transport. It is challenging but crucial to develop highly conductive doped a-Si:H for minimizing the FF losses. Here we report intensive light soaking can efficiently boost the dark conductance of B-doped a-Si:H "thin" films, which is an abnormal Staebler-Wronski effect. By implementing this abnormal effect to SHJ solar cells, we achieve a certificated power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.18% (26.05% on designated area) with FF of 85.42% on a 244.63-cm2 wafer. This PCE is one of the highest reported values for total-area "top/rear" contact silicon solar cells. The FF reaches 98.30 per cent of its Shockley-Queisser limit.

Observation of nearly identical superconducting transition temperatures in pressurized Weyl semimetal MIrTe4 (M=Nb and Ta)

Here we report the observation of pressure-induced superconductivity in type-II Weyl semimetal (WSM) candidate NbIrTe4 and the evolution of its Hall coefficient (RH), magnetoresistance (MR), and lattice with increasing pressure to ~57 GPa. These results provide a significant opportunity to investigate the universal high-pressure behavior of ternary WSMs, including the sister compound TaIrTe4 that has been known through our previous studies. We find that the pressure-tuned evolution from the WSM to the superconducting (SC) state in these two compounds exhibit the same trend, i.e., a pressure-induced SC state emerges from the matrix of the non-superconducting WSM state at ~ 27 GPa, and then the WSM state and the SC state coexist up to 40 GPa. Above this pressure, an identical high-pressure behavior, characterized by almost the same value of RH and MR in its normal state and the same value of Tc in its SC state, appears in both compounds. Our results not only reveal a universal connection between the WSM state and SC state, but also demonstrate that NbIrTe4 and TaIrTe4 can make the same contribution to the normal and SC states that inhabit in the high-pressure phase, although these two compounds have dramatically different topological band structure at ambient pressure.

A low phase noise microwave source for high performance CPT Rb atomic clock

Phase noise of the frequency synthesizer is one of the main limitations to the short-term stability of microwave atomic clocks. In this work, we demonstrated a low-noise, simple-architecture microwave frequency synthesizer for a coherent population trapping (CPT) clock. The synthesizer is mainly composed of a 100 MHz oven controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO), a microwave comb generator and a direct digital synthesizer (DDS). The absolute phase noises of 3.417 GHz signal are measured to be -55 dBc/Hz, -81 dBc/Hz, -111 dBc/Hz and -134 dBc/Hz, respectively, for 1 Hz, 10 Hz, 100 Hz and 1 kHz offset frequencies, which shows only 1 dB deterioration at the second harmonic of the modulation frequency of the atomic clock. The estimated frequency stability of intermodulation effect is 4.7*10^{-14} at 1s averaging time, which is about half order of magnitude lower than that of the state-of-the-art CPT Rb clock. Our work offers an alternative microwave synthesizer for high-performance CPT Rb atomic clock.

ICASSP 2021 Deep Noise Suppression Challenge: Decoupling Magnitude and Phase Optimization with a Two-Stage Deep Network

It remains a tough challenge to recover the speech signals contaminated by various noises under real acoustic environments. To this end, we propose a novel system for denoising in the complicated applications, which is mainly comprised of two pipelines, namely a two-stage network and a post-processing module. The first pipeline is proposed to decouple the optimization problem w:r:t: magnitude and phase, i.e., only the magnitude is estimated in the first stage and both of them are further refined in the second stage. The second pipeline aims to further suppress the remaining unnatural distorted noise, which is demonstrated to sufficiently improve the subjective quality. In the ICASSP 2021 Deep Noise Suppression (DNS) Challenge, our submitted system ranked top-1 for the real-time track 1 in terms of Mean Opinion Score (MOS) with ITU-T P.808 framework.

A Robust Maximum Likelihood Distortionless Response Beamformer based on a Complex Generalized Gaussian Distribution

For multichannel speech enhancement, this letter derives a robust maximum likelihood distortionless response beamformer by modeling speech sparse priors with a complex generalized Gaussian distribution, where we refer to as the CGGD-MLDR beamformer. The proposed beamformer can be regarded as a generalization of the minimum power distortionless response beamformer and its improved variations. For narrowband applications, we also reveal that the proposed beamformer reduces to the minimum dispersion distortionless response beamformer, which has been derived with the ${{\ell}_{p}}$-norm minimization. The mechanisms of the proposed beamformer in improving the robustness are clearly pointed out and experimental results show its better performance in PESQ improvement.

Crystal structure and properties of iron-based spin-chain compound Ba9Fe3Se15

We report the synthesis of a new quasi one-dimensional (1D) iron selenide. Ba9Fe3Se15 was synthesized at high temperature and high pressure of 5.5 GPa and systematically studied via structural, magnetic and transport measurements at ambient and at high-pressures. Ba9Fe3Se15 crystallizes in a monoclinic structure and consists of face-sharing FeSe6 octahedral chains along the c axis. At ambient pressure it exhibits an insulating behavior with a band gap ~460 meV and undergoes a ferrimagnet-like phase transition at 14 K. Under high pressure, a complete metallization occurs at ~29 GPa, which is accompanied by a spin state crossover from high spin (HS) state to low spin (LS) state. The LS appears for pressures P >36 GPa.

Confused Modulo Projection based Somewhat Homomorphic Encryption -- Cryptosystem, Library and Applications on Secure Smart Cities

With the development of cloud computing, the storage and processing of massive visual media data has gradually transferred to the cloud server. For example, if the intelligent video monitoring system cannot process a large amount of data locally, the data will be uploaded to the cloud. Therefore, how to process data in the cloud without exposing the original data has become an important research topic. We propose a single-server version of somewhat homomorphic encryption cryptosystem based on confused modulo projection theorem named CMP-SWHE, which allows the server to complete blind data processing without \emph{seeing} the effective information of user data. On the client side, the original data is encrypted by amplification, randomization, and setting confusing redundancy. Operating on the encrypted data on the server side is equivalent to operating on the original data. As an extension, we designed and implemented a blind computing scheme of accelerated version based on batch processing technology to improve efficiency. To make this algorithm easy to use, we also designed and implemented an efficient general blind computing library based on CMP-SWHE. We have applied this library to foreground extraction, optical flow tracking and object detection with satisfactory results, which are helpful for building smart cities. We also discuss how to extend the algorithm to deep learning applications. Compared with other homomorphic encryption cryptosystems and libraries, the results show that our method has obvious advantages in computing efficiency. Although our algorithm has some tiny errors ($10^{-6}$) when the data is too large, it is very efficient and practical, especially suitable for blind image and video processing.

Multi-level Chaotic Maps for 3D Textured Model Encryption

With rapid progress of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technologies, 3D contents are the next widespread media in many applications. Thus, the protection of 3D models is primarily important. Encryption of 3D models is essential to maintain confidentiality. Previous work on encryption of 3D surface model often consider the point clouds, the meshes and the textures individually. In this work, a multi-level chaotic maps models for 3D textured encryption was presented by observing the different contributions for recognizing cipher 3D models between vertices (point cloud), polygons and textures. For vertices which make main contribution for recognizing, we use high level 3D Lu chaotic map to encrypt them. For polygons and textures which make relatively smaller contributions for recognizing, we use 2D Arnold's cat map and 1D Logistic map to encrypt them, respectively. The experimental results show that our method can get similar performance with the other method use the same high level chaotic map for point cloud, polygons and textures, while we use less time. Besides, our method can resist more method of attacks such as statistic attack, brute-force attack, correlation attack.

A Time-domain Monaural Speech Enhancement with Feedback Learning

In this paper, we propose a type of neural network with feedback learning in the time domain called FTNet for monaural speech enhancement, where the proposed network consists of three principal components. The first part is called stage recurrent neural network, which is introduced to effectively aggregate the deep feature dependencies across different stages with a memory mechanism and also remove the interference stage by stage. The second part is the convolutional auto-encoder. The third part consists of a series of concatenated gated linear units, which are capable of facilitating the information flow and gradually increasing the receptive fields. Feedback learning is adopted to improve the parameter efficiency and therefore, the number of trainable parameters is effectively reduced without sacrificing its performance. Numerous experiments are conducted on TIMIT corpus and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed network can achieve consistently better performance in terms of both PESQ and STOI scores than two state-of-the-art time domain-based baselines in different conditions.

Two Heads Are Better Than One: A Two-Stage Approach for Monaural Noise Reduction in the Complex Domain

In low signal-to-noise ratio conditions, it is difficult to effectively recover the magnitude and phase information simultaneously. To address this problem, this paper proposes a two-stage algorithm to decouple the joint optimization problem w.r.t. magnitude and phase into two sub-tasks. In the first stage, only magnitude is optimized, which incorporates noisy phase to obtain a coarse complex clean speech spectrum estimation. In the second stage, both the magnitude and phase components are refined. The experiments are conducted on the WSJ0-SI84 corpus, and the results show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms previous baselines in terms of PESQ, ESTOI, and SDR.

Distributed Node-Specific Block-Diagonal LCMV Beamforming in Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks

This paper derives the analytical solution of a novel distributed node-specific block-diagonal linearly constrained minimum variance beamformer from the centralized linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) beamformer when considering that the noise covariance matrix is block-diagonal. To further reduce the computational complexity of the proposed beamformer, the ShermanMorrison-Woodbury formula is introduced to compute the inversion of noise sample covariance matrix. By doing so, the exchanged signals can be computed with lower dimensions between nodes, where the optimal LCMV beamformer is still available at each node as if each node is to transmit its all raw sensor signal observations. The proposed beamformer is fully distributable without imposing restrictions on the underlying network topology or scaling computational complexity, i.e., there is no increase in the per-node complexity when new nodes are added to the networks. Compared with state-of-the-art distributed node-specific algorithms that are often time-recursive, the proposed beamformer exactly solves the LCMV beamformer optimally frame by frame, which has much lower computational complexity and is more robust to acoustic transfer function estimation error and voice activity detector error. Numerous experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed beamformer.

A Deep Drift-Diffusion Model for Image Aesthetic Score Distribution Prediction

The task of aesthetic quality assessment is complicated due to its subjectivity. In recent years, the target representation of image aesthetic quality has changed from a one-dimensional binary classification label or numerical score to a multi-dimensional score distribution. According to current methods, the ground truth score distributions are straightforwardly regressed. However, the subjectivity of aesthetics is not taken into account, that is to say, the psychological processes of human beings are not taken into consideration, which limits the performance of the task. In this paper, we propose a Deep Drift-Diffusion (DDD) model inspired by psychologists to predict aesthetic score distribution from images. The DDD model can describe the psychological process of aesthetic perception instead of traditional modeling of the results of assessment. We use deep convolution neural networks to regress the parameters of the drift-diffusion model. The experimental results in large scale aesthetic image datasets reveal that our novel DDD model is simple but efficient, which outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in aesthetic score distribution prediction. Besides, different psychological processes can also be predicted by our model.
