Knowledge Graph Quality Evaluation under Incomplete Information

Knowledge graphs (KGs) have attracted more and more attentions because of their fundamental roles in many tasks. Quality evaluation for KGs is thus crucial and indispensable. Existing methods in this field evaluate KGs by either proposing new quality metrics from different dimensions or measuring performances at KG construction stages. However, there are two major issues with those methods. First, they highly rely on raw data in KGs, which makes KGs' internal information exposed during quality evaluation. Second, they consider more about the quality at data level instead of ability level, where the latter one is more important for downstream applications. To address these issues, we propose a knowledge graph quality evaluation framework under incomplete information (QEII). The quality evaluation task is transformed into an adversarial Q&A game between two KGs. Winner of the game is thus considered to have better qualities. During the evaluation process, no raw data is exposed, which ensures information protection. Experimental results on four pairs of KGs demonstrate that, compared with baselines, the QEII implements a reasonable quality evaluation at ability level under incomplete information.

Action Pick-up in Dynamic Action Space Reinforcement Learning

Most reinforcement learning algorithms are based on a key assumption that Markov decision processes (MDPs) are stationary. However, non-stationary MDPs with dynamic action space are omnipresent in real-world scenarios. Yet problems of dynamic action space reinforcement learning have been studied by many previous works, how to choose valuable actions from new and unseen actions to improve learning efficiency remains unaddressed. To tackle this problem, we propose an intelligent Action Pick-up (AP) algorithm to autonomously choose valuable actions that are most likely to boost performance from a set of new actions. In this paper, we first theoretically analyze and find that a prior optimal policy plays an important role in action pick-up by providing useful knowledge and experience. Then, we design two different AP methods: frequency-based global method and state clustering-based local method, based on the prior optimal policy. Finally, we evaluate the AP on two simulated but challenging environments where action spaces vary over time. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed AP has advantages over baselines in learning efficiency.

A General Unfolding Speech Enhancement Method Motivated by Taylor's Theorem

While deep neural networks have facilitated significant advancements in the field of speech enhancement, most existing methods are developed following either empirical or relatively blind criteria, lacking adequate guidelines in pipeline design. Inspired by Taylor's theorem, we propose a general unfolding framework for both single- and multi-channel speech enhancement tasks. Concretely, we formulate the complex spectrum recovery into the spectral magnitude mapping in the neighborhood space of the noisy mixture, in which an unknown sparse term is introduced and applied for phase modification in advance. Based on that, the mapping function is decomposed into the superimposition of the 0th-order and high-order polynomials in Taylor's series, where the former coarsely removes the interference in the magnitude domain and the latter progressively complements the remaining spectral detail in the complex spectrum domain. In addition, we study the relation between adjacent order terms and reveal that each high-order term can be recursively estimated with its lower-order term, and each high-order term is then proposed to evaluate using a surrogate function with trainable weights so that the whole system can be trained in an end-to-end manner. Given that the proposed framework is devised based on Taylor's theorem, it possesses improved internal flexibility. Extensive experiments are conducted on WSJ0-SI84, DNS-Challenge, Voicebank+Demand, spatialized Librispeech, and L3DAS22 multi-channel speech enhancement challenge datasets. Quantitative results show that the proposed approach yields competitive performance over existing top-performing approaches in terms of multiple objective metrics.

Adaptive Solution Prediction for Combinatorial Optimization

This paper aims to predict optimal solutions for combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) via machine learning (ML). To find high-quality solutions efficiently, existing work uses a ML prediction of the optimal solution to guide heuristic search, where the ML model is trained offline under the supervision of solved problem instances with known optimal solutions. To predict the optimal solution with sufficient accuracy, it is critical to provide a ML model with adequate features that can effectively characterize decision variables. However, acquiring such features is challenging due to the high complexity of COPs. This paper proposes a framework that can better characterize decision variables by harnessing feedback from a heuristic search over several iterative steps, enabling an offline-trained ML model to predict the optimal solution in an adaptive manner. We refer to this approach as adaptive solution prediction (ASP). Specifically, we employ a set of statistical measures as features, which can extract useful information from feasible solutions found by a heuristic search and inform the ML model as to which value a decision variable is likely to take in high-quality solutions. Our experiments on three NP-hard COPs show that ASP substantially improves the prediction quality of an offline-trained ML model and achieves competitive results compared to several heuristic methods in terms of solution quality. Furthermore, we demonstrate that ASP can be used as a heuristic-pricing method for column generation, to boost an exact branch-and-price algorithm for solving the graph coloring problem.

Pressure-induced coevolution of transport properties and lattice stability in CaK(Fe1-xNix)4As4 (x= 0.04 and 0) superconductors with and without spin-vortex crystal state

Here we report the first investigation on correlation between the transport properties and the corresponding stability of the lattice structure for CaK(Fe1-xNix)4As4 (x=0.04 and 0), a new type of putative topological superconductors, with and without a spin-vortex crystal (SVC) state in a wide pressure range involving superconducting to non-superconducting transition and the half- to full-collapse of tetragonal (h-cT and f-cT) phases, by the complementary measurements of high-pressure resistance, Hall coefficient and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We identify the three critical pressures, P1 that is the turn-on critical pressure of the h-cT phase transition and it coincides with the critical pressure for the sign change of Hall coefficient from positive to negative, a manifestation of the Fermi surface reconstruction, P2 that is the turn-off pressures of the h-cT phase transition, and P3 that is the critical pressure of the f-cT phase transition. By comparing the high-pressure results measured from the two kinds of samples, we find a distinct left-shift of the P1 for the doped sample, at the pressure of which its SVC state is fully suppressed, however the P2 and the P3 remain the same as that of the undoped one. Our results not only provide a consistent understanding on the results reported before, but also demonstrate the importance of the Fe-As bonding in stabilizing the superconductivity of the iron pnictide superconductors through the pressure window.

Hierarchical Deep Reinforcement Learning for VWAP Strategy Optimization

Designing an intelligent volume-weighted average price (VWAP) strategy is a critical concern for brokers, since traditional rule-based strategies are relatively static that cannot achieve a lower transaction cost in a dynamic market. Many studies have tried to minimize the cost via reinforcement learning, but there are bottlenecks in improvement, especially for long-duration strategies such as the VWAP strategy. To address this issue, we propose a deep learning and hierarchical reinforcement learning jointed architecture termed Macro-Meta-Micro Trader (M3T) to capture market patterns and execute orders from different temporal scales. The Macro Trader first allocates a parent order into tranches based on volume profiles as the traditional VWAP strategy does, but a long short-term memory neural network is used to improve the forecasting accuracy. Then the Meta Trader selects a short-term subgoal appropriate to instant liquidity within each tranche to form a mini-tranche. The Micro Trader consequently extracts the instant market state and fulfils the subgoal with the lowest transaction cost. Our experiments over stocks listed on the Shanghai stock exchange demonstrate that our approach outperforms baselines in terms of VWAP slippage, with an average cost saving of 1.16 base points compared to the optimal baseline.

TaylorBeamixer: Learning Taylor-Inspired All-Neural Multi-Channel Speech Enhancement from Beam-Space Dictionary Perspective

Despite the promising performance of existing frame-wise all-neural beamformers in the speech enhancement field, it remains unclear what the underlying mechanism exists. In this paper, we revisit the beamforming behavior from the beam-space dictionary perspective and formulate it into the learning and mixing of different beam-space components. Based on that, we propose an all-neural beamformer called TaylorBM to simulate Taylor's series expansion operation in which the 0th-order term serves as a spatial filter to conduct the beam mixing, and several high-order terms are tasked with residual noise cancellation for post-processing. The whole system is devised to work in an end-to-end manner. Experiments are conducted on the spatialized LibriSpeech corpus and results show that the proposed approach outperforms existing advanced baselines in terms of evaluation metrics.

Adaptive Population-based Simulated Annealing for Uncertain Resource Constrained Job Scheduling

Transporting ore from mines to ports is of significant interest in mining supply chains. These operations are commonly associated with growing costs and a lack of resources. Large mining companies are interested in optimally allocating their resources to reduce operational costs. This problem has been previously investigated in the literature as resource constrained job scheduling (RCJS). While a number of optimisation methods have been proposed to tackle the deterministic problem, the uncertainty associated with resource availability, an inevitable challenge in mining operations, has received less attention. RCJS with uncertainty is a hard combinatorial optimisation problem that cannot be solved efficiently with existing optimisation methods. This study proposes an adaptive population-based simulated annealing algorithm that can overcome the limitations of existing methods for RCJS with uncertainty including the premature convergence, the excessive number of hyper-parameters, and the inefficiency in coping with different uncertainty levels. This new algorithm is designed to effectively balance exploration and exploitation, by using a population, modifying the cooling schedule in the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, and using an adaptive mechanism to select perturbation operators. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing methods across a wide range of benchmark RCJS instances and uncertainty levels. Moreover, new best known solutions are discovered for all but one problem instance across all uncertainty levels.

Tomographic Alcock-Paczynski Method with Redshift Errors

The tomographic Alcock-Paczynski (AP) method is a promising method that uses the redshift evolution of the anisotropic clustering in redshift space to calibrate cosmology. It extends the applicable range of AP method to substantially nonlinear scales, yielding very tight cosmological constraints. For future stage-IV slitless spectroscopic surveys, the non-negligible redshift errors might reduce the advantage of the tomographic AP method by suppressing the resolution of the nonlinear structure along the line of sight. The present work studies how redshift errors propagate to cosmological parameters in the tomographic AP analysis. We use a formula $σ_z = σ(1+z)^α $ to model the redshift errors, with $σ$ varying from 0.001 to 0.006 and $α$ varying from 0.5 to 1.5. The redshift errors produce a signal of anisotropic clustering that is similar to a strong finger-of-god effect, which smears out both the AP signal and the contamination caused by the redshift space distortions (RSD). For the target precision of the Chinese Space Station Telescope optical survey ($σ\lesssim 0.002$), the decrement of constraining power on the dark energy equation of state is mild ($\lesssim 50\%$), and the suppression of RSD contamination leads to a smaller bias-to-signal ratio. Our results indicate that the tomographic AP method will remain a useful and complementary tool for analyses of future slitless spectroscopic surveys.

Lock-in effect of over-tip shock waves and identification of the escaping vortex-shedding mode in pressure-driven tip leakage flow

Time-resolved schlieren visualization is used to investigate the unsteady flow structures of tip leakage flows in the clearance region. A common generic blade tip model is created and tested in a wind tunnel under operating conditions ranging from low-subsonic to transonic. A multi-cutoff superposition technique is developed to achieve better flow visualization. Quantitative image processing is performed to extract the flow structures and the instability modes. Additional numerical simulations are performed to help classify the observed flow structures. Unsteady flow structures such as over-tip shock oscillation, shear-layer flapping, and vortex shedding are revealed by Fourier analysis and dynamic mode decomposition. The results show that, under subsonic conditions, the trigger position of the shear layer instability is monotonically delayed as the blade loading increases; however, this pattern is reversed under transonic conditions. This implies that flow compressibility, flow acceleration, and the oscillation of over-tip shock waves are critical factors related to tip flow instabilities. The over-tip shock waves are observed to be locked-in by frequency and position with the shear-layer flapping mode. An intermittent flow mode, termed the escaping vortex-shedding mode, is also observed. These flow structures are key factors in the control of tip leakage flows. Based on the observed flow dynamics, a schematic drawing of tip leakage flow structures and related motions is proposed. Finally, an experimental dataset is obtained for the validation of future numerical simulations.

Network medicine framework reveals generic herb-symptom effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) relies on natural medical products to treat symptoms and diseases. While clinical data have demonstrated the effectiveness of selected TCM-based treatments, the mechanistic root of how TCM herbs treat diseases remains largely unknown. More importantly, current approaches focus on single herbs or prescriptions, missing the high-level general principles of TCM. To uncover the mechanistic nature of TCM on a system level, in this work we establish a generic network medicine framework for TCM from the human protein interactome. Applying our framework reveals a network pattern between symptoms (diseases) and herbs in TCM. We first observe that genes associated with a symptom are not distributed randomly in the interactome, but cluster into localized modules; furthermore, a short network distance between two symptom modules is indicative of the symptoms' co-occurrence and similarity. Next, we show that the network proximity of a herb's targets to a symptom module is predictive of the herb's effectiveness in treating the symptom. We validate our framework with real-world hospital patient data by showing that (1) shorter network distance between symptoms of inpatients correlates with higher relative risk (co-occurrence), and (2) herb-symptom network proximity is indicative of patients' symptom recovery rate after herbal treatment. Finally, we identified novel herb-symptom pairs in which the herb's effectiveness in treating the symptom is predicted by network and confirmed in hospital data, but previously unknown to the TCM community. These predictions highlight our framework's potential in creating herb discovery or repurposing opportunities. In conclusion, network medicine offers a powerful novel platform to understand the mechanism of traditional medicine and to predict novel herbal treatment against diseases.

Quasi-uniaxial pressure induced superconductivity in stoichiometric compound UTe$_2$

The recent discovery of superconductivity in heavy Fermion compound UTe2, a candidate topological and triplet-paired superconductor, has aroused widespread interest. However, to date, there is no consensus on whether the stoichiometric sample of UTe2 is superconducting or not due to lack of reliable evidence to distinguish the difference between the nominal and real compositions of samples. Here, we are the first to clarify that the stoichiometric UT2 is non-superconducting at ambient pressure and under hydrostatic pressure up to 6 GPa, however we find that it can be compressed into superconductivity by application of quasi-uniaxial pressure. Measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistance and susceptibility reveal that the quasi-uniaxial pressure results in a suppression of the Kondo coherent state seen at ambient pressure, and then leads to a superconductivity initially emerged on the ab-plane at 1.5 GPa. At 4.8 GPa, the superconductivity is developed in three crystallographic directions. The superconducting state coexists with an exotic magnetic ordered state that develops just below the onset temperature of the superconducting transition. The discovery of the quasi-uniaxial-pressure-induced superconductivity with exotic magnetic state in the stoichiometric UTe2 not only provide new understandings on this compound, but also highlight the vital role of Te deficiency in developing the superconductivity at ambient pressures.

Ranking Constraint Relaxations for Mixed Integer Programs Using a Machine Learning Approach

Solving large-scale Mixed Integer Programs (MIP) can be difficult without advanced algorithms such as decomposition based techniques. Even if a decomposition technique might be appropriate, there are still many possible decompositions for any large MIP and it may not be obvious which will be the most effective. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the predictive capabilities of a Machine Learning ranking (ML) function for predicting the quality of Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) decompositions created via constraint relaxation. In this analysis, the role of instance similarity and ML prediction quality is explored, as well as the benchmarking of a ML ranking function against existing heuristic functions. For this analysis, a new dataset consisting of over 40000 unique decompositions sampled from across 24 instances from the MIPLIB2017 library has been established. These decompostions have been created by both a greedy relaxation algorithm as well as a population based multi-objective algorithm, which has previously been shown to produce high quality decompositions. In this paper, we demonstrate that a ML ranking function is able to provide state-of-the-art predictions when benchmarked against existing heuristic ranking functions. Additionally, we demonstrate that by only considering a small set of features related to the relaxed constraints in each decomposition, a ML ranking function is still able to be competitive with heuristic techniques. Such a finding is promising for future constraint relaxation approaches, as these features can be used to guide decomposition creation. Finally, we highlight where a ML ranking function would be beneficial in a decomposition creation framework.

Searching for multiple populations in star clusters using the China Space Station Telescope

Multiple stellar populations (MPs) in most star clusters older than 2 Gyr, as seen by lots of spectroscopic and photometric studies, have led to a significant challenge to the traditional view of star formation. In this field, space-based instruments, in particular the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), have made a breakthrough as they significantly improved the efficiency of detecting MPs in crowding stellar fields by images. The China Space Station Telescope (CSST) and the HST are sensitive to a similar wavelength interval, but it covers a field of view which is about 5-8 times wider than that of HST. One of its instruments, the Multi-Channel Imager (MCI), will have multiple filters covering a wide wavelength range from NUV to NIR, making the CSST a potentially powerful tool for studying MPs in clusters. In this work, we evaluate the efficiency of the designed filters for the MCI/CSST in revealing MPs in different color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We find that CMDs made with MCI/CSST photometry in appropriate UV filters are powerful tools to disentangle stellar populations with different abundances of He, C, N, O and Mg. On the contrary, the traditional CMDs are blind to multiple populations in globular clusters (GCs). We show that CSST has the potential of being the spearhead instrument for investigating MPs in GCs in the next decades.

Efficient Joint DOA and TOA Estimation for Indoor Positioning with 5G Picocell Base Stations

The ubiquity, large bandwidth, and spatial diversity of the fifth generation (5G) cellular signal render it a promising candidate for accurate positioning in indoor environments where the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signal is absent. In this paper, a joint angle and delay estimation (JADE) scheme is designed for 5G picocell base stations (gNBs) which addresses two crucial issues to make it both effective and efficient in realistic indoor environments. Firstly, the direction-dependence of the array modeling error for picocell gNB as well as its impact on JADE is revealed. This error is mitigated by fitting the array response measurements to a vector-valued function and pre-calibrating the ideal steering-vector with the fitted function. Secondly, based on the deployment reality that 5G picocell gNBs only have a small-scale antenna array but have a large signal bandwidth, the proposed scheme decouples the estimation of time-of-arrival (TOA) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) to reduce the huge complexity induced by two-dimensional joint processing. It employs the iterative-adaptive-approach (IAA) to resolve multipath signals in the TOA domain, followed by a conventional beamformer (CBF) to retrieve the desired line-of-sight DOA. By further exploiting a dimension-reducing pre-processing module and accelerating spectrum computing by fast Fourier transforms, an efficient implementation is achieved for real-time JADE. Numerical simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in terms of DOA estimation accuracy. Field tests show that a triangulation positioning error of 0.44 m is achieved for 90% cases using only DOAs estimated at two separated receiving points.

Observation of three superconducting transitions in the pressurized CDW-bearing compound TaTe2

Transition metal dichalcogenides host a wide variety of lattice and electronic structures, as well as corresponding exotic physical properties, especially under certain tuning conditions. Here, we are the first to report the observation of pressure-induced three superconducting transitions in TaTe2, a charge density wave (CDW) - bearing layered transition-metal dichalcogenide that is metallic but not superconducting at ambient pressure. We find that its CDW state can be easily suppressed upon increasing pressure up to ~ 1 GPa. A superconducting state then emerges from the suppressed CDW state and persists to the pressure about 7 GPa. Unexpectedly, another superconducting state appears at ~ 11 GPa within the same monoclinic (M) structure of its ambient-pressure one. Upon further compression to 21 GPa, a third superconducting state with higher Tc appears from a high-pressure (HP) phase. Our experimental results suggest that the pressure-induced three superconducting transitions in TaTe2 are respectively driven by the suppression of the CDW state, the change of the angle in the M phase and the transition of M-to-HP phase. These results demonstrate not only the versatile nature of this correlated electron system, but also the first experimental example that shows the pressure-induced evolution from a CDW state to three superconducting states driven by different mechanisms.

A deep complex multi-frame filtering network for stereophonic acoustic echo cancellation

In hands-free communication system, the coupling between loudspeaker and microphone generates echo signal, which can severely influence the quality of communication. Meanwhile, various types of noise in communication environments further reduce speech quality and intelligibility. It is difficult to extract the near-end signal from the microphone signal within one step, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio scenarios. In this paper, we propose a deep complex network approach to address this issue. Specially, we decompose the stereophonic acoustic echo cancellation into two stages, including linear stereophonic acoustic echo cancellation module and residual echo suppression module, where both modules are based on deep learning architectures. A multi-frame filtering strategy is introduced to benefit the estimation of linear echo by capturing more inter-frame information. Moreover, we decouple the complex spectral mapping into magnitude estimation and complex spectrum refinement. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves stage-of-the-art performance over previous advanced algorithms under various conditions.

Taylor, Can You Hear Me Now? A Taylor-Unfolding Framework for Monaural Speech Enhancement

While the deep learning techniques promote the rapid development of the speech enhancement (SE) community, most schemes only pursue the performance in a black-box manner and lack adequate model interpretability. Inspired by Taylor's approximation theory, we propose an interpretable decoupling-style SE framework, which disentangles the complex spectrum recovery into two separate optimization problems \emph{i.e.}, magnitude and complex residual estimation. Specifically, serving as the 0th-order term in Taylor's series, a filter network is delicately devised to suppress the noise component only in the magnitude domain and obtain a coarse spectrum. To refine the phase distribution, we estimate the sparse complex residual, which is defined as the difference between target and coarse spectra, and measures the phase gap. In this study, we formulate the residual component as the combination of various high-order Taylor terms and propose a lightweight trainable module to replace the complicated derivative operator between adjacent terms. Finally, following Taylor's formula, we can reconstruct the target spectrum by the superimposition between 0th-order and high-order terms. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets show that our framework achieves state-of-the-art performance over previous competing baselines in various evaluation metrics. The source code is available at github.com/Andong-Lispeech/TaylorSENet.
