Insight-HXMT observations of jet-like corona in a black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070

A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as a standing shock where the material flowing through. In this dynamical scenario, the decrease of the reflection fraction is a signature of the corona's bulk velocity. Our findings suggest that as the corona is observed to get closer to the black hole, the coronal material might be outflowing faster.

Theoretical prediction of interfacial thermal conductance at high temperature across solid-solid interfaces

The existed theories and methods for calculating interfacial thermal conductance of solid-solid interface lead to diverse values that deviate from experimental measurements. In this letter, We propose a model to estimate the ITC at high temperature without comprehensive calculations, where the interface between two dissimilar solids can be treated as an amorphous thin layer and the coordination number density across interface becomes a key parameter. Our model predicts that the ITCs of various interfaces at 300K are in a narrow range: 10$^{7}$W m$^{-2}$K$^{-1}$ $\sim $10$^{9}$ W m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$, which is in good agreement with the experimental measurement.

Comparison of simulated backgrounds with in-orbit observations for HE, ME and LE onboard Insight-HXMT

Insight-HXMT, the first X-ray astronomical satellite in China, aims to reveal new sources in the Galaxy and to study fundamental physics of X-ray binaries from 1\,keV to 250\,keV. It has three collimated telescopes, the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE), the Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) and the Low Energy X-ray telescope (LE). Before the launch, in-orbit backgrounds of these three telescopes had been estimated through Geant4 simulation, in order to investigate the instrument performance and the achievement of scientific goals. In this work, these simulated backgrounds are compared with in-orbit observations. Good agreement is shown for all three telescopes. For HE, 1) the deviation of the simulated background rate after two years of operation in space is $\sim5\%$ from the observation; 2) the total background spectrum and the relative abundance of the $\sim$67\,keV line show long-term increases both in simulations and observations. For ME, 1) the deviation of simulated background rate is within $\sim15\%$ from the observation, and 2) there are no obvious long-term increase features in the background spectra of simulations and observations. For LE, the background level given by simulations is also consistent with observations. The consistencies of these comparisons validate that the Insight-HXMT mass model, i.e. space environment components and models adopted, physics processes selected and detector constructions built, is reasonable. However, the line features at $\sim$7.5\,keV and 8.0\,keV, which are obvious in the observed spectra of LE, are not evident in simulations. This might result from uncertainties in the LE constructions.

AIM 2020 Challenge on Real Image Super-Resolution: Methods and Results

This paper introduces the real image Super-Resolution (SR) challenge that was part of the Advances in Image Manipulation (AIM) workshop, held in conjunction with ECCV 2020. This challenge involves three tracks to super-resolve an input image for $\times$2, $\times$3 and $\times$4 scaling factors, respectively. The goal is to attract more attention to realistic image degradation for the SR task, which is much more complicated and challenging, and contributes to real-world image super-resolution applications. 452 participants were registered for three tracks in total, and 24 teams submitted their results. They gauge the state-of-the-art approaches for real image SR in terms of PSNR and SSIM.

Pixel-Face: A Large-Scale, High-Resolution Benchmark for 3D Face Reconstruction

3D face reconstruction is a fundamental task that can facilitate numerous applications such as robust facial analysis and augmented reality. It is also a challenging task due to the lack of high-quality datasets that can fuel current deep learning-based methods. However, existing datasets are limited in quantity, realisticity and diversity. To circumvent these hurdles, we introduce Pixel-Face, a large-scale, high-resolution and diverse 3D face dataset with massive annotations. Specifically, Pixel-Face contains 855 subjects aging from 18 to 80. Each subject has more than 20 samples with various expressions. Each sample is composed of high-resolution multi-view RGB images and 3D meshes with various expressions. Moreover, we collect precise landmarks annotation and 3D registration result for each data. To demonstrate the advantages of Pixel-Face, we re-parameterize the 3D Morphable Model (3DMM) into Pixel-3DM using the collected data. We show that the obtained Pixel-3DM is better in modeling a wide range of face shapes and expressions. We also carefully benchmark existing 3D face reconstruction methods on our dataset. Moreover, Pixel-Face serves as an effective training source. We observe that the performance of current face reconstruction models significantly improves both on existing benchmarks and Pixel-Face after being fine-tuned using our newly collected data. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of Pixel-3DM and the usefulness of Pixel-Face.

Augmented Bi-path Network for Few-shot Learning

Few-shot Learning (FSL) which aims to learn from few labeled training data is becoming a popular research topic, due to the expensive labeling cost in many real-world applications. One kind of successful FSL method learns to compare the testing (query) image and training (support) image by simply concatenating the features of two images and feeding it into the neural network. However, with few labeled data in each class, the neural network has difficulty in learning or comparing the local features of two images. Such simple image-level comparison may cause serious mis-classification. To solve this problem, we propose Augmented Bi-path Network (ABNet) for learning to compare both global and local features on multi-scales. Specifically, the salient patches are extracted and embedded as the local features for every image. Then, the model learns to augment the features for better robustness. Finally, the model learns to compare global and local features separately, i.e., in two paths, before merging the similarities. Extensive experiments show that the proposed ABNet outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Both quantitative and visual ablation studies are provided to verify that the proposed modules lead to more precise comparison results.

Design and Calibration of the High Energy Particle Monitor onboard the Insight-HXMT

Three high energy particle monitors (HPMs) employed onboard the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope Insight-HXMT) can detect the charged particles from South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) and hence provide the alert trigger for switch-on/off of the main detectors. Here a typical design of HPM with high stability and reliability is adopted by taking a plastic scintillator coupled with a small photomultiplier tube (PMT). The window threshold of HPM is designed as 1 MeV and 20 MeV for the incident electron and proton, respectively. Before the launch of Insight-HXMT, we performed in details the ground calibration of HPM. The measured energy response and its dependence on temperature are taken as essential input of Geant4 simulation for estimating the HPM count rate given with an incident particle energy spectrum. This serves as a guidance for choosing a reasonable working range of the PMT high voltage once the real SAA count rate is measured by HPM in orbit. So far the three HPMs have been working in orbit for more than two years. Apart from providing reliable alert trigger, the HPMs data are used as well to map the SAA region.

In-flight calibration of the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope

We present the calibration of the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) X-ray satellite, which can be used to perform timing and spectral studies of bright X-ray sources. Insight-HXMT carries three main payloads onboard: the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE), the Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) and the Low Energy X-ray telescope (LE). In orbit, the radioactive sources, activated lines, the fluorescence lines and celestial sources are used to calibrate the energy scale and energy resolution of the payloads. The Crab nebular is adopted as the primary effective area calibrator and empirical functions are constructed to modify the simulated effective areas of the three payloads respectively. The systematic errors of HE, compared to the model of the Crab nebular, are less than 2% in 28--120 keV and 2%--10% above 120 keV. The systematic errors of ME are less than 1.5% in 10--35 keV. The systematic errors of LE are less than 1% in 1--7 keV except the Si K--edge (1.839 keV, up to 1.5%) and less than 2% in 7--10 keV.

In-orbit calibration status of the Insight-HXMT

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, Insight-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) successfully launched on Jun 15, 2017. It performs timing and spectral studies of bright sources to determine their physical parameters. HXMT carries three main payloads onboard: the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE, 20-250 keV, NaI(Tl)/CsI(Na)), the Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME, 5-30 keV, Si-Pin) and the Low Energy X-ray telescope (LE, 1-15 keV, SCD). In orbit, we have used the radioactive sources, activated lines, the fluorescence line, and Cas A to calibrate the gain and energy resolution of the payloads. The Crab pulsar was adopted as the primary effective area calibrator and an empirical function was found to modify the simulated effective areas. The absolute timing accuracy of HXMT is about 100us from the TOA of Crab Pulsar.

Single-Electron Transistor Made of a 3D Topological Insulator Nanoplate

Quantum confined devices of three-dimensional topological insulators have been proposed to be promising and of great importance for studies of confined topological states and for applications in low energy-dissipative spintronics and quantum information processing. The absence of energy gap on the TI surface limits the experimental realization of a quantum confined system in three-dimensional topological insulators. This communication reports on the successful realization of single-electron transistor devices in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ nanoplates by state of the art nanofabrication techniques. Each device consists of a confined central island, two narrow constrictions that connect the central island to the source and drain, and surrounding gates. Low-temperature transport measurements demonstrate that the two narrow constrictions function as tunneling junctions and the device shows well-defined Coulomb current oscillations and Coulomb diamond shaped charge stability diagrams. This work provides a controllable and reproducible way to form quantum confined systems in three-dimensional topological insulators, which should greatly stimulate research towards confined topological states, low energy-dissipative devices and quantum information processing.

Thermal Conductivity Modeling using Machine Learning Potentials: Application to Crystalline and Amorphous Silicon

First-principles based modeling on phonon dynamics and transport using density functional theory and Boltzmann transport equation has proven powerful in predicting thermal conductivity of crystalline materials, but it remains unfeasible for modeling complex crystals and disordered solids due to the prohibitive computational cost to capture the disordered structure, especially when the quasiparticle "phonon" model breaks down. Recently, machine-learning regression algorithms show great promises for building high-accuracy potential fields for atomistic modeling with length and time scales far beyond those achievable by first-principles calculations. In this work, using both crystalline and amorphous silicon as examples, we develop machine learning based potential fields for predicting thermal conductivity. The machine learning based interatomic potential is derived from density functional theory calculations by stochastically sampling the potential energy surface in the configurational space. The thermal conductivities of both amorphous and crystalline silicon are then calculated using equilibrium molecular dynamics, which agree well with experimental measurements. This work documents the procedure for training the machine-learning based potentials for modeling thermal conductivity, and demonstrates that machine-learning based potential can be a promising tool for modeling thermal conductivity of both crystalline and amorphous materials with strong disorder.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

Universal conductance fluctuations and phase-coherent transport in a semiconductor Bi$_2$O$_2$Se nanoplate with strong spin-orbit interaction

We report on phase-coherent transport studies of a Bi$_2$O$_2$Se nanoplate and on observation of universal conductance fluctuations and spin-orbit interaction induced reduction in fluctuation amplitude in the nanoplate. Thin-layered Bi$_2$O$_2$Se nanoplates are grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and transport measurements are made on a Hall-bar device fabricated from a CVD-grown nanoplate. The measurements show weak antilocalization at low magnetic fields at low temperatures, as a result of spin-orbit interaction, and a crossover toward weak localization with increasing temperature. Temperature dependences of characteristic transport lengths, such as spin relaxation length, phase coherence length, and mean free path, are extracted from the low-field measurement data. Universal conductance fluctuations are visible in the low-temperature magnetoconductance over a large range of magnetic fields and the phase coherence length extracted from the autocorrelation function is in consistence with the result obtained from the weak localization analysis. More importantly, we find a strong reduction in amplitude of the universal conductance fluctuations and show that the results agree with the analysis assuming strong spin-orbit interaction in the Bi$_2$O$_2$Se nanoplate.

Three-Dimensional Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity Tensor of Single Crystalline \b{eta}-Ga2O3

\b{eta}-Ga2O3 has attracted considerable interest in recent years for high power electronics, where thermal properties of \b{eta}-Ga2O3 play a critical role. The thermal conductivity of \b{eta}-Ga2O3 is expected to be three-dimensionally (3D) anisotropic due to the monoclinic lattice structure. In this work, the 3D anisotropic thermal conductivity tensor of a (010)-oriented \b{eta}-Ga2O3 single crystal was measured by using a novel time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method with a highly elliptical pump beam. Our measured results suggest that at room temperature, the highest in-plane thermal conductivity is along a direction between [001] and [102], with a value of 13.3+/-1.8 W/mK, and the lowest in-plane thermal conductivity is close to the [100] direction, with a value of 9.5+/-1.8 W/mK. The through-plane thermal conductivity, which is along the [010] direction, has the highest value of 22+/-2.5 W/mK among all the directions. Temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of \b{eta}-Ga2O3 was also measured and compared with a modified Callaway model calculation to understand the temperature dependence and the role of impurity scattering.

Nanostructured Polymer Films with Metal-like Thermal Conductivity

Thermally conductive polymers are of fundamental interest and can also be exploited in thermal management applications. Recent studies have shown stretched polymers can achieve high thermal conductivity. However, the transport mechanisms of heat in thermally conductive polymers have yet to be elucidated. Here we report a method for scalable fabrication of polyethylene films with a high thermal conductivity of 62 W/m-K. The achieved thermal conductivity is over two orders-of-magnitude greater than that of typical polymers (~0.1 W/m-K), and exceeds those of many metals and ceramics used as traditional heat conductors. Careful structural studies are carried out and reveal that the film consists of nanofibers with crystalline and amorphous regions. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we reveal the importance of the amorphous morphology in achieving such high thermal conductivity, rather than simply from enhancements in the degree of crystallinity and crystallite alignment. The amorphous phase reaches a remarkably high thermal conductivity of ~16 W/m-K. Even still, we identify that the presence of this amorphous phase is the dominant factor as the film thermal conductivity is still much lower than the predicted values for bulk single-crystal polyethylene (237 K/m-K). This work lays the foundation for the rational design and synthesis of thermally conductive polymers, and opens up new opportunities for advanced heat management, particularly when flexible, lightweight, chemically inert and electrically insulating thermal conductors are desired.

Diagnosing the kinematics of the tori in active galactic nuclei with the velocity-resolved reverberation mapping of the narrow iron K$α$ line

The properties of the dusty tori in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been investigated in detail, mainly focusing on the geometry and components; however, the kinematics of the torus is still not clear. The narrow iron K$α$ line at 6.4 keV is thought to be produced by the X-ray reflection from the torus. Thus, the velocity-resolved reverberation mapping of it is able to constrain the kinematics of the torus. Such effort is limited by the spectral resolution of current CCD detectors and should be possible with the microcalorimeter on the next generation X-ray satellite. In this paper, we first construct the response functions of the torus under a uniform inflow, a Keplerian rotation, and a uniform outflow. Then the energy-dependent light curve of the narrow iron K$α$ line is simulated according to the performance of the X-ray Integral Field Unit in Athena. Finally, the energy-dependent cross-correlation function is calculated to reveal the kinematic signal. According to our results, one hundred observations with 5 ks exposure of each are sufficient to distinguish the above three velocity fields. Although the real geometry and velocity field of the torus could be more complex than we assumed, the present result proves the feasibility of the velocity-resolved reverberation mapping of the narrow iron K$α$ line. The combination of the dynamics of the torus with those of the broad line region and the host galaxy is instructive for the understanding of the feeding and feedback process of AGNs.

Thermal Conductivity of PAAm Hydrogel and its Crosslinking Effect

As the interface between human and machine becomes blurred, hydrogel incorporated electronics and devices have emerged to be a new class of flexible/stretchable electronic and ionic devices due to their extraordinary properties, such as soft, mechanically robust and biocompatible. However, heat dissipation in these devices could be a critical issue and remains unexplored. Here, we report the experimental measurements and equilibrium molecular dynamic (EMD) simulations of thermal conduction in polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels at room temperature. The thermal conductivity of the PAAm hydrogels can be modulated from 0.33 to 0.51 Wm-1K-1 by changing the crosslinking density. The crosslinking density dependent thermal conductivity in hydrogels is explained by the competition between the increased conduction pathways and the enhanced phonon scattering effect. The assumption is further supported by both the equilibrium swelling ratio measurement and molecular simulation of hydrogels. Our study offers fundamental understanding of thermal transport in soft materials and provides design guidance for hydrogel-based devices.

Enhancing thermal conductivity of bulk polyethylene along two directions by paved crosswise laminate

Recently, some reports show that the ultra-low thermal conductivity of bulk polymers can be enhanced along one direction, which limits its applications. Here, we proposed paved crosswise laminate methods which can enhance the thermal conductivity of bulk polyethylene (PE) along two directions. We find that the thermal conductivity of paved crosswise polyethylene laminate (PPEL) reaches as high as 181 W/m-K along two in-plane directions, which is three orders of magnitude larger than bulk amorphous polyethylene and even more than two times larger than PE single chain (54 W/m-K). The analyses of mechanism indicated that PPEL is a much more crystal-like structure due to the inter-chain van der Waals interactions. Our study may provide guides on the design and fabrication of polymer structures with high thermal conductivity.
