Topological Acoustics

The manipulation of acoustic wave propagation in fluids has numerous applications, including some in everyday life. Acoustic technologies frequently develop in tandem with optics, using shared concepts such as waveguiding and metamedia. It is thus noteworthy that an entirely novel class of electromagnetic waves, known as topological edge states, has recently been demonstrated. These are inspired by the electronic edge states occurring in topological insulators, and possess a striking and technologically promising property: the ability to travel in a single direction along a surface without backscattering, regardless of the existence of defects or disorder. Here, we develop an analogous theory of topological fluid acoustics, and propose a scheme for realizing topological edge states in an acoustic structure containing circulating fluids. The phenomenon of disorder-free one-way sound propagation, which does not occur in ordinary acoustic devices, may have novel applications for acoustic isolators, modulators, and transducers.

Combining the Best of Graphical Models and ConvNets for Semantic Segmentation

We present a two-module approach to semantic segmentation that incorporates Convolutional Networks (CNNs) and Graphical Models. Graphical models are used to generate a small (5-30) set of diverse segmentations proposals, such that this set has high recall. Since the number of required proposals is so low, we can extract fairly complex features to rank them. Our complex feature of choice is a novel CNN called SegNet, which directly outputs a (coarse) semantic segmentation. Importantly, SegNet is specifically trained to optimize the corpus-level PASCAL IOU loss function. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first CNN specifically designed for semantic segmentation. This two-module approach achieves $52.5\%$ on the PASCAL 2012 segmentation challenge.

Multiple nodeless superconducting gaps in optimally-doped SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_{3}$

We present the first study of thermal conductivity in superconducting SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_{3}$, sufficiently doped to be near its maximum critical temperature. The bulk critical temperature, determined by the jump in specific heat, occurs at a significantly lower temperature than the resistive T$_{c}$. Thermal conductivity, dominated by the electron contribution, deviates from its normal-state magnitude at bulk T$_{c}$, following a Bardeen-Rickayzen-Tewordt (BRT) behavior, expected for thermal transport by Bogoliubov excitations. Absence of a T-linear term at very low temperatures rules out the presence of nodal quasi-particles. On the other hand, the field dependence of thermal conductivity points to the existence of at least two distinct superconducting gaps. We conclude that optimally-doped strontium titanate is a multigap nodeless superconductor.

Model-Driven Data Collection for Biological Systems

For biological experiments aiming at calibrating models with unknown parameters, a good experimental design is crucial, especially for those subject to various constraints, such as financial limitations, time consumption and physical practicability. In this paper, we discuss a sequential experimental design based on information theory for parameter estimation and apply it to two biological systems. Two specific issues are addressed in the proposed applications, namely the determination of the optimal sampling time and the optimal choice of observable. The optimal design, either sampling time or observable, is achieved by an information-theoretic sensitivity analysis. It is shown that this is equivalent with maximizing the mutual information and contrasted with non-adaptive designs, this information theoretic strategy provides the fastest reduction of uncertainty.

Critical doping for the onset of a two-band superconducting ground state in SrTiO$_{3-δ}$

In doped SrTiO$_{3}$ superconductivity persists down to an exceptionally low concentration of mobile electrons. This restricts the relevant energy window and possible pairing scenarios. We present a study of quantum oscillations and superconducting transition temperature, $T_{c}$ as the carrier density is tuned from $10^{17}$ to $10^{20}$ $cm^{-3}$ and identify two critical doping levels corresponding to the filling thresholds of the upper bands. At the first critical doping, which separates the single-band and the two-band superconducting regimes in oxygen-deficient samples, the steady increase of T$_{c}$ with carrier concentration suddenly stops. Near this doping level, the energy dispersion in the lowest band displays a downward deviation from parabolic behavior. The results impose new constraints for microscopic pairing scenarios.

Thermodynamic and transport properties of single crystalline RCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ (R = Y, La-Nd, Sm-Tm)

Single crystals of RCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ (R = Y, La-Nd, Sm-Tm) were grown using a self-flux method and were characterized by room-temperature powder x-ray diffraction; anisotropic, temperature and field dependent magnetization; temperature and field dependent, in-plane resistivity; and specific heat measurements. In this series, the majority of the moment-bearing members order antiferromagnetically; YCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ and LaCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ are non-moment-bearing. Ce is trivalent in CeCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ at high temperatures, and exhibits an enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient due to Kondo effect at low temperatures. In addition, CeCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ shows two low-temperature anomalies in temperature-dependent magnetization and specific heat measurements. Three members (R = Tb-Ho) have multiple phase transitions above 1.8 K. Eu appears to be divalent with total angular momentum L = 0. Both EuCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ and GdCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ manifest essentially isotropic paramagnetic properties consistent with J = S = 7/2. Clear magnetic anisotropy for rare-earth members with finite L was observed, with ErCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ and TmCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ manifesting planar anisotropy and the rest members manifesting axial anisotropy. The experimentally estimated crystal electric field (CEF) parameters B$_{2}^{0}$ were calculated from the anisotropic paramagnetic $θ_{ab}$ and $θ_{c}$ values and follow a trend that agrees well with theoretical predictions. The ordering temperatures, T$_{N}$, as well as the polycrystalline averaged paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, $Θ_{avg}$, for the heavy rare-earth members deviate from the de Gennes scaling, as the magnitude of both are the highest for Tb, which is sometimes seen for extremely axial systems. Except for SmCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$, metamagnetic transitions were observed at 1.8 K for all members that ordered antiferromagnetically.

Suppression of ferromagnetism in the La(V$_x$Cr$_{1-x}$)Sb$_3$ system

To explore the possibility of quantum phase transitions and even quantum criticality in LaCrSb$_3$ based compounds, we performed measurements under pressure as well as a vanadium substitution study. The Curie temperature of LaCrSb$_3$ was found to be invariant under pressure. Although pressure was not able to suppress the ferromagnetism, chemical substitution was used as another parameter to tune the magnetism. We grew La(V$_x$Cr$_{1-x}$)Sb$_3$ (\textit{x} = 0 -- 1.0) single crystals, and studied the series by measurements of temperature and field dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat. Ferromagnetism has been observed for $x \leq 0.22$, and the system manifests a strong anisotropy in its ordered state. The Curie temperature decreases monotonically as the V concentration increases. For $0.42 \leq x \leq 0.73$, the system enters a new magnetic state at low temperatures, and no magnetic ordering above 1.8 K can be observed for $x \geq 0.88$. The effective moment $μ_{\rm eff}$/Cr varies only slightly as the V concentration increases, from 3.9 $μ_{\rm B}$ for $x$ = 0 to 2.9 $μ_{\rm B}$ for $x$ = 0.88. Features related to quantum criticality have not been observed in the La(V$_x$Cr$_{1-x}$)Sb$_3$ system.

Suppression of ferromagnetism in the LaVxCr1-xGe3 system

We report synthesis of hexagonal LaVxCr1-xGe3 (x = 0-0.21, 1.00) single crystals, and present a systematic study of this series by measurements of temperature and field dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat. Ferromagnetism has been observed for x = 0-0.21, and the system manifests a strong axial anisotropy in its ordered state. The decrease of the saturated moment and the effective moment per Cr with the increase of V-concentration suggests this is an itinerant ferromagnetic system. The Curie temperature declines monotonically as the V-concentration increases. Single crystalline samples could only be grown for x-values up to 0.21 for which the transition temperature was suppressed down to 36 K. Although we could not fully suppress TC via V-substitution, for x = 0.16, we performed magnetization measurements under pressure. The ferromagnetic state is suppressed under pressure at an initial rate of dTC/dp = -11.7 K/GPa and vanishes by 3.3 GPa.

Fermi surface of the most dilute superconductor

The origin of superconductivity in bulk SrTiO$_{3}$ is a mystery, since the non-monotonous variation of the critical transition with carrier concentration defies the expectations of the crudest version of the BCS theory. Here, employing the Nernst effect, an extremely sensitive probe of tiny bulk Fermi surfaces, we show that down to concentrations as low as $5.5 \times 10^{17}cm^{-3}$, the system has both a sharp Fermi surface and a superconducting ground state. The most dilute superconductor currently known has therefore a metallic normal state with a Fermi energy as little as 1.1 meV on top of a band gap as large as 3 eV. Occurrence of a superconducting instability in an extremely small, single-component and barely anisotropic Fermi surface implies strong constraints for the identification of the pairing mechanism.

Anisotropic magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity of single crystalline R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = La, Ce, Pr and Nd)

We present a detailed study of R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) single crystals by measurements of crystal structure, stoichiometry, temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and specific heat. This series forms with partial Ni occupancy with x varying from ~ 0.1 for R = La to ~0.7 for R = Nd. The electrical resistivity of this series follows metallic behavior at high temperatures. Determination of clear anisotropies as well as antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures for R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = Ce, Pr and Nd) have been made. For Pr3Ni1.56Sn7 and Nd3Ni1.34Sn7, multiple magnetic transitions take place upon cooling. Metamagnetic transitions in this family (R = Ce, Pr and Nd) were detected for applied magnetic fields below 70 kOe. An H-T phase diagram of Ce3Ni1.69Sn7 was assembled to shed light on its low field properties and to rule out possible quantum critical effects.

Anisotropic magnetization and resistivity of single crystalline RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy)

We present a detailed study of RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy) single crystals by measurements of stoichiometry and temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and electrical resistivity. This series forms with partial Ni occupancy as well as a variable Bi occupancy. For R = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy, the RNi1-xBi2+-y compounds show local-moment like behavior and order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Determination of anisotropies as well as antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures for RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy) have been made. Although crystalline samples from this family exhibit minority, second phase superconductivity at low temperatures associated with Ni-Bi and Bi contamination, no evidence of bulk superconductivity has been observed.

Optical and electronic properties of two dimensional graphitic silicon carbide

Optical and electronic properties of two dimensional few layers graphitic silicon carbide (GSiC), in particular monolayer and bilayer, are investigated by density functional theory and found different from that of graphene and silicene. Monolayer GSiC has direct bandgap while few layers exhibit indirect bandgap. The bandgap of monolayer GSiC can be tuned by an in-plane strain. Properties of bilayer GSiC are extremely sensitive to the interlayer distance. These predictions promise that monolayer GSiC could be a remarkable candidate for novel type of light-emitting diodes utilizing its unique optical properties distinct from graphene, silicene and few layers GSiC.

Physical properties of single crystalline BaSn5

We present a comprehensive study of the binary intermetallic superconductor, BaSn5. High-quality single crystalline BaSn5 was grown out of Sn flux. Detailed thermodynamic and transport measurements were performed to study BaSn5's normal and superconducting state properties. This material appears to be a strongly coupled, multiband superconductor. Hc2(T)is almost isotropic. De Haas-van Alphen oscillations were observed and two effective masses were estimated from the FFT spectra. Hydrostatic pressure causes a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature at the rate of ~ -0.053 K/kbar.

Physical properties of SrSn4 single crystals

We present detailed thermodynamic and transport measurements on single crystals of the recently discovered binary intermetallic superconductor, SrSn4. We find this material to be a slightly anisotropic three-dimensional, strongly-coupled, possibly multi-band, superconductor. Hydrostatic pressure causes a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature at the rate of -0.068 K/kbar. Band structure calculations are consistent with experimental data on Sommerfeld coefficient and upper superconducting critical field anisotropy and suggest complex, multi-sheet Fermi surface formed by four bands.

CeNiAsO: an antiferromagnetic dense Kondo lattice

A cerium containing pnictide, CeNiAsO, crystallized in the ZrCuSiAs type structure, has been investigated by measuring transport and magnetic properties, as well as specific heat. We found that CeNiAsO is an antiferromagnetic dense Kondo lattice metallic compound with Kondo scale $T_K \sim$ 15 K and shows an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient of $γ_0 \sim$ 203 mJ/mol$\cdot$K$^{2}$. While no superconductivity can been observed down to 30 mK, Ce ions exhibit two successive antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions. We propose that the magnetic moment of Ce ion could align in the G type AFM order below the first transition at $T_{N1}$=9.3 K, and it might be modified into the C type AFM order below a lower transition at $T_{N2}$=7.3 K. Our results indicate that the 3$d-4f$ interlayer Kondo interactions play an important role in Ni-based Ce-containing pnictide.

Comparative study on the thermoelectric effect of parent oxypnictides La$T$AsO ($T$ = Fe, Ni)

The thermopower and Nernst effect were investigated for undoped parent compounds LaFeAsO and LaNiAsO. Both thermopower and Nernst signal in iron-based LaFeAsO are significantly larger than those in nickel-based LaNiAsO. Furthermore, abrupt changes in both thermopower and Nernst effect are observed below the structural phase transition temperature and spin-density wave (SDW) type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order temperature in Fe-based LaFeAsO. On the other hand, Nernst effect is very small in the Ni-based LaNiAsO and it is weakly temperature-dependent, reminiscent of the case in normal metals. We suggest that the effect of SDW order on the spin scattering rate should play an important role in the anomalous temperature dependence of Hall effect and Nernst effect in LaFeAsO. The contrast behavior between the LaFeAsO and LaNiAsO systems implies that the LaFeAsO system is fundamentally different from the LaNiAsO system and this may provide clues to the mechanism of high $T_c$ superconductivity in the Fe-based systems.

Evidence of Magnetically Driven Structural Phase Transition in Parent Compounds RFeAsO (R = La, Sm, Gd, Tb): study of low-temperature X-ray diffraction

We report measurements of structural phase transition of four parent compounds $R$FeAsO ($R$ = La, Sm, Gd, and Tb) by means of low-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD). Magnetic transition temperatures associated with Fe ions ($T_{N1}$) are also determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity. As $R$ is changed from La, through Sm and Gd, to Tb, both the c-axis and a-axis lattice constants decrease significantly. Meanwhile both the structural phase transition temperature ($T_S$) and $T_{N1}$ decrease monotonously. It is also found that the temperature gap between $T_S$ and $T_{N1}$ becomes smaller when the distance between FeAs layer becomes shorter. This result is consistent with magnetically driven structural phase transition and suggests that the dimensionality have an important effect on the AFM ordering.

Narrow superconducting window in Ni-doped LaFeAsO

We have studied Ni-substitution effect in LaFe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$AsO ($0\leq x \leq0.1$) by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity. The nickel doping drastically suppresses the resistivity anomaly associated with spin-density-wave ordering in the parent compound. Superconductivity emerges in a narrow region of $0.03\leq x \leq0.06$ with the maximum $T_c$ of 6.5 K at $x$=0.04, where enhanced magnetic susceptibility shows up. The upper critical field at zero temperature is estimated to exceed the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The much lowered $T_c$ in comparison with LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ system is discussed.
