Tunnel junctions based on interfacial 2D ferroelectrics

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have opened new opportunities to develop atomically thin (opto)electronic devices with a wide range of functionalities. The recent focus on manipulating the interlayer twist angle has led to the observation of out-of-plane room temperature ferroelectricity in twisted rhombohedral (R) bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here we explore the switching behaviour of sliding ferroelectricity using scanning probe microscopy domain mapping and tunnelling transport measurements. We observe well-pronounced ambipolar switching behaviour in ferroelectric tunnelling junctions (FTJ) with composite ferroelectric/non-polar insulator barriers and support our experimental results with complementary theoretical modelling. Furthermore, we show that the switching behaviour is strongly influenced by the underlying domain structure, allowing fabrication of diverse FTJ devices with various functionalities. We show that to observe the polarisation reversal, at least one partial dislocation must be present in the device area. This behaviour is drastically different from that of conventional ferroelectric materials and its understanding is an important milestone for future development of optoelectronic devices based on sliding ferroelectricity.

A Deep Instance Generative Framework for MILP Solvers Under Limited Data Availability

In the past few years, there has been an explosive surge in the use of machine learning (ML) techniques to address combinatorial optimization (CO) problems, especially mixed-integer linear programs (MILPs). Despite the achievements, the limited availability of real-world instances often leads to sub-optimal decisions and biased solver assessments, which motivates a suite of synthetic MILP instance generation techniques. However, existing methods either rely heavily on expert-designed formulations or struggle to capture the rich features of real-world instances. To tackle this problem, we propose G2MILP, the first deep generative framework for MILP instances. Specifically, G2MILP represents MILP instances as bipartite graphs, and applies a masked variational autoencoder to iteratively corrupt and replace parts of the original graphs to generate new ones. The appealing feature of G2MILP is that it can learn to generate novel and realistic MILP instances without prior expert-designed formulations, while preserving the structures and computational hardness of real-world datasets, simultaneously. Thus the generated instances can facilitate downstream tasks for enhancing MILP solvers under limited data availability. We design a suite of benchmarks to evaluate the quality of the generated MILP instances. Experiments demonstrate that our method can produce instances that closely resemble real-world datasets in terms of both structures and computational hardness. The deliverables are released at https://miralab-ustc.github.io/L2O-G2MILP.

Language-Driven Anchors for Zero-Shot Adversarial Robustness

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are known to be susceptible to adversarial attacks. Previous researches mainly focus on improving adversarial robustness in the fully supervised setting, leaving the challenging domain of zero-shot adversarial robustness an open question. In this work, we investigate this domain by leveraging the recent advances in large vision-language models, such as CLIP, to introduce zero-shot adversarial robustness to DNNs. We propose LAAT, a Language-driven, Anchor-based Adversarial Training strategy. LAAT utilizes the features of a text encoder for each category as fixed anchors (normalized feature embeddings) for each category, which are then employed for adversarial training. By leveraging the semantic consistency of the text encoders, LAAT aims to enhance the adversarial robustness of the image model on novel categories. However, naively using text encoders leads to poor results. Through analysis, we identified the issue to be the high cosine similarity between text encoders. We then design an expansion algorithm and an alignment cross-entropy loss to alleviate the problem. Our experimental results demonstrated that LAAT significantly improves zero-shot adversarial robustness over state-of-the-art methods. LAAT has the potential to enhance adversarial robustness by large-scale multimodal models, especially when labeled data is unavailable during training.

Measurement-Based Small-Scale Channel Model for Sub-6 GHz RIS-Assisted Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have attracted increasing interest from both academia and industry, thanks to their unique features on controlling electromagnetic (EM) waves. Although theoretical models for RIS-empowered communications have covered a variety of applications, yet, very few papers have investigated the modeling of real propagation characteristics. In this paper, we fill this gap by providing an empirical statistical channel model to describe the small-scale channel variations for an RIS-assisted broadband system at 2.6 GHz. Based on real channel measurements in outdoor, indoor and outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) environments, we compare and analyze the global, inter-cluster and intra-cluster parameters. Measurement results indicate that the deployment of an RIS with proper phase configurations can significantly improve the channel quality by enhancing the $K$-factor and reducing the time dispersion. The small-scale fading is well characterized by the proposed statistical model and the empirical channel parameters. These results are essential for the design of emerging RIS-assisted wireless systems for future applications.

RCoCo: Contrastive Collective Link Prediction across Multiplex Network in Riemannian Space

Link prediction typically studies the probability of future interconnection among nodes with the observation in a single social network. More often than not, real scenario is presented as a multiplex network with common (anchor) users active in multiple social networks. In the literature, most existing works study either the intra-link prediction in a single network or inter-link prediction among networks (a.k.a. network alignment), and consider two learning tasks are independent from each other, which is still away from the fact. On the representation space, the vast majority of existing methods are built upon the traditional Euclidean space, unaware of the inherent geometry of social networks. The third issue is on the scarce anchor users. Annotating anchor users is laborious and expensive, and thus it is impractical to work with quantities of anchor users. Herein, in light of the issues above, we propose to study a challenging yet practical problem of Geometry-aware Collective Link Prediction across Multiplex Network. To address this problem, we present a novel contrastive model, RCoCo, which collaborates intra- and inter-network behaviors in Riemannian spaces. In RCoCo, we design a curvature-aware graph attention network ($κ-$GAT), conducting attention mechanism in Riemannian manifold whose curvature is estimated by the Ricci curvatures over the network. Thereafter, we formulate intra- and inter-contrastive loss in the manifolds, in which we augment graphs by exploring the high-order structure of community and information transfer on anchor users. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments with 14 strong baselines on 8 real-world datasets, and show the effectiveness of RCoCo.

On the existence, rareness and uniqueness of quenched HI-rich galaxies in the local Universe

Using data from ALFALFA, xGASS, HI-MaNGA and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we identify a sample of 47 "red but HI-rich"(RR) galaxies with $NUV-r > 5$ and unusually high HI-to-stellar mass ratios. We compare the optical properties and local environments between the RR galaxies and a control sample of "red and HI-normal"(RN) galaxies that are matched in stellar mass and color. The two samples are similar in the optical properties typical of massive red (quenched) galaxies in the local Universe. The RR sample tends to be associated with slightly lower-density environments and has lower clustering amplitudes and smaller neighbor counts at scales from several kiloparsecs to a few Megaparsecs. The results are consistent with the RR galaxies preferentially being located at the center of low-mass halos, with a median halo mass $\sim 10^{12}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ compared to $\sim 10^{12.5}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ for the RN sample. This result is confirmed by the SDSS group catalog which reveals a central fraction of 89% for the RR sample, compared to $\sim 60\%$ for the RN sample. If assumed to follow the HI size-mass relation of normal galaxies, the RR galaxies have an average HI-to-optical radius ratio of $R_{HI}/R_{90}\sim 4$, four times the average ratio for the RN sample. We compare our RR sample with similar samples in previous studies, and quantify the population of RR galaxies using the SDSS complete sample. We conclude that the RR galaxies form a unique but rare population, accounting for only a small fraction of the massive quiescent galaxy population. We discuss the formation scenarios of the RR galaxies.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: Power Consumption Modeling and Practical Measurement Validation

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has received a lot of interest because of its capacity to reconfigure the wireless communication environment in a cost- and energy-efficient way. However, the realistic power consumption modeling and measurement validation of RIS has received far too little attention. Therefore, in this work, we model the power consumption of RIS and conduct measurement validations using various RISs to fill this vacancy. Firstly, we propose a practical power consumption model of RIS. The RIS hardware is divided into three basic parts: the FPGA control board, the drive circuits, and the RIS unit cells. The power consumption of the first two parts is modeled as $P_{\text {static}}$ and that of the last part is modeled as $P_{\text {units}}$. Expressions of $P_{\text {static}}$ and $P_{\text {units}}$ vary amongst different types of RISs. Secondly, we conduct measurements on various RISs to validate the proposed model. Five different RISs including the PIN diode, varactor diode, and RF switch types are measured, and measurement results validate the generality and applicability of the proposed power consumption model of RIS. Finally, we summarize the measurement results and discuss the approaches to achieve the low-power-consumption design of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems.

Spatially Varying Nanophotonic Neural Networks

The explosive growth of computation and energy cost of artificial intelligence has spurred strong interests in new computing modalities as potential alternatives to conventional electronic processors. Photonic processors that execute operations using photons instead of electrons, have promised to enable optical neural networks with ultra-low latency and power consumption. However, existing optical neural networks, limited by the underlying network designs, have achieved image recognition accuracy far below that of state-of-the-art electronic neural networks. In this work, we close this gap by embedding massively parallelized optical computation into flat camera optics that perform neural network computation during the capture, before recording an image on the sensor. Specifically, we harness large kernels and propose a large-kernel spatially-varying convolutional neural network learned via low-dimensional reparameterization techniques. We experimentally instantiate the network with a flat meta-optical system that encompasses an array of nanophotonic structures designed to induce angle-dependent responses. Combined with an extremely lightweight electronic backend with approximately 2K parameters we demonstrate a reconfigurable nanophotonic neural network reaches 72.76\% blind test classification accuracy on CIFAR-10 dataset, and, as such, the first time, an optical neural network outperforms the first modern digital neural network -- AlexNet (72.64\%) with 57M parameters, bringing optical neural network into modern deep learning era.

Distributed Stochastic Optimization under a General Variance Condition

Distributed stochastic optimization has drawn great attention recently due to its effectiveness in solving large-scale machine learning problems. Though numerous algorithms have been proposed and successfully applied to general practical problems, their theoretical guarantees mainly rely on certain boundedness conditions on the stochastic gradients, varying from uniform boundedness to the relaxed growth condition. In addition, how to characterize the data heterogeneity among the agents and its impacts on the algorithmic performance remains challenging. In light of such motivations, we revisit the classical Federated Averaging (FedAvg) algorithm (McMahan et al., 2017) as well as the more recent SCAFFOLD method (Karimireddy et al., 2020) for solving the distributed stochastic optimization problem and establish the convergence results under only a mild variance condition on the stochastic gradients for smooth nonconvex objective functions. Almost sure convergence to a stationary point is also established under the condition. Moreover, we discuss a more informative measurement for data heterogeneity as well as its implications.

Rank Optimization for MIMO Channel with RIS: Simulation and Measurement

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology that can reshape the electromagnetic environment in wireless networks, offering various possibilities for enhancing wireless channels. Motivated by this, we investigate the channel optimization for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems assisted by RIS. In this paper, an efficient RIS optimization method is proposed to enhance the effective rank of the MIMO channel for achievable rate improvement. Numerical results are presented to verify the effectiveness of RIS in improving MIMO channels. Additionally, we construct a 2$\times$2 RIS-assisted MIMO prototype to perform experimental measurements and validate the performance of our proposed algorithm. The results reveal a significant increase in effective rank and achievable rate for the RIS-assisted MIMO channel compared to the MIMO channel without RIS.

ReSync: Riemannian Subgradient-based Robust Rotation Synchronization

This work presents ReSync, a Riemannian subgradient-based algorithm for solving the robust rotation synchronization problem, which arises in various engineering applications. ReSync solves a least-unsquared minimization formulation over the rotation group, which is nonsmooth and nonconvex, and aims at recovering the underlying rotations directly. We provide strong theoretical guarantees for ReSync under the random corruption setting. Specifically, we first show that the initialization procedure of ReSync yields a proper initial point that lies in a local region around the ground-truth rotations. We next establish the weak sharpness property of the aforementioned formulation and then utilize this property to derive the local linear convergence of ReSync to the ground-truth rotations. By combining these guarantees, we conclude that ReSync converges linearly to the ground-truth rotations under appropriate conditions. Experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of ReSync.

Investigating the Catastrophic Forgetting in Multimodal Large Language Models

Following the success of GPT4, there has been a surge in interest in multimodal large language model (MLLM) research. This line of research focuses on developing general-purpose LLMs through fine-tuning pre-trained LLMs and vision models. However, catastrophic forgetting, a notorious phenomenon where the fine-tuned model fails to retain similar performance compared to the pre-trained model, still remains an inherent problem in multimodal LLMs (MLLM). In this paper, we introduce EMT: Evaluating MulTimodality for evaluating the catastrophic forgetting in MLLMs, by treating each MLLM as an image classifier. We first apply EMT to evaluate several open-source fine-tuned MLLMs and we discover that almost all evaluated MLLMs fail to retain the same performance levels as their vision encoders on standard image classification tasks. Moreover, we continue fine-tuning LLaVA, an MLLM and utilize EMT to assess performance throughout the fine-tuning. Interestingly, our results suggest that early-stage fine-tuning on an image dataset improves performance across other image datasets, by enhancing the alignment of text and visual features. However, as fine-tuning proceeds, the MLLMs begin to hallucinate, resulting in a significant loss of generalizability, even when the image encoder remains frozen. Our results suggest that MLLMs have yet to demonstrate performance on par with their vision models on standard image classification tasks and the current MLLM fine-tuning procedure still has room for improvement.

Nearly minimax empirical Bayesian prediction of independent Poisson observables

In this study, simultaneous predictive distributions for independent Poisson observables were considered and the performance of predictive distributions was evaluated using the Kullback-Leibler (K-L) loss. This study proposes a class of empirical Bayesian predictive distributions that dominate the Bayesian predictive distribution based on the Jeffreys prior. The K-L risk of the empirical Bayesian predictive distributions is demonstrated to be less than 1.04 times the minimax lower bound.

Low-Complexity Joint Beamforming for RIS-Assisted MU-MISO Systems Based on Model-Driven Deep Learning

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) can improve signal propagation environments by adjusting the phase of the incident signal. However, optimizing the phase shifts jointly with the beamforming vector at the access point is challenging due to the non-convex objective function and constraints. In this study, we propose an algorithm based on weighted minimum mean square error optimization and power iteration to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of a RIS-assisted downlink multi-user multiple-input single-output system. To further improve performance, a model-driven deep learning (DL) approach is designed, where trainable variables and graph neural networks are introduced to accelerate the convergence of the proposed algorithm. We also extend the proposed method to include beamforming with imperfect channel state information and derive a two-timescale stochastic optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of complexity and WSR. Specifically, the model-driven DL approach has a runtime that is approximately 3% of the state-of-the-art algorithm to achieve the same performance. Additionally, the proposed algorithm with 2-bit phase shifters outperforms the compared algorithm with continuous phase shift.

Missing Value Imputation for Multi-attribute Sensor Data Streams via Message Propagation (Extended Version)

Sensor data streams occur widely in various real-time applications in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, sensor data streams feature missing values due to factors such as sensor failures, communication errors, or depleted batteries. Missing values can compromise the quality of real-time analytics tasks and downstream applications. Existing imputation methods either make strong assumptions about streams or have low efficiency. In this study, we aim to accurately and efficiently impute missing values in data streams that satisfy only general characteristics in order to benefit real-time applications more widely. First, we propose a message propagation imputation network (MPIN) that is able to recover the missing values of data instances in a time window. We give a theoretical analysis of why MPIN is effective. Second, we present a continuous imputation framework that consists of data update and model update mechanisms to enable MPIN to perform continuous imputation both effectively and efficiently. Extensive experiments on multiple real datasets show that MPIN can outperform the existing data imputers by wide margins and that the continuous imputation framework is efficient and accurate.

Model Predictive Control of Diesel Engine Emissions Based on Neural Network Modeling

This paper addresses the control of diesel engine nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Soot emissions through the application of Model Predictive Control (MPC). The developments described in the paper are based on a high-fidelity model of the engine airpath and torque response in GT-Power, which is extended with a feedforward neural network (FNN)-based model of engine out (feedgas) emissions identified from experimental engine data to enable the controller co-simulation and performance verification. A Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is then identified for use as a prediction model in the implementation of a nonlinear economic MPC that adjusts intake manifold pressure and EGR rate set-points to the inner loop airpath controller as well as the engine fueling rate. Based on GT-Power engine model and FNN emissions model, the closed-loop simulations of the control system and the plant model, over different driving cycles, demonstrate the capability to shape engine out emissions response by adjusting weights and constraints in economic MPC formulation.

Modeling and Control of Diesel Engine Emissions using Multi-layer Neural Networks and Economic Model Predictive Control

This paper presents the results of developing a multi-layer Neural Network (NN) to represent diesel engine emissions and integrating this NN into control design. Firstly, a NN is trained and validated to simultaneously predict oxides of nitrogen (N Ox) and Soot using both transient and steady-state data. Based on the input-output correlation analysis, inputs to NN with the highest influence on the emissions are selected while keeping the NN structure simple. Secondly, a co-simulation framework is implemented to integrate the NN emissions model with a model of a diesel engine airpath system built in GT-Power and used to identify a low-order linear parameter-varying (LPV) model for emissions prediction. Finally, an economic supervisory model predictive controller (MPC) is developed using the LPV emissions model to adjust setpoints to an inner-loop airpath tracking MPC. Simulation results are reported illustrating the capability of the resulting controller to reduce N Ox, meet the target Soot limit, and track the adjusted intake manifold pressure and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate targets.

High-Fidelity and Freely Controllable Talking Head Video Generation

Talking head generation is to generate video based on a given source identity and target motion. However, current methods face several challenges that limit the quality and controllability of the generated videos. First, the generated face often has unexpected deformation and severe distortions. Second, the driving image does not explicitly disentangle movement-relevant information, such as poses and expressions, which restricts the manipulation of different attributes during generation. Third, the generated videos tend to have flickering artifacts due to the inconsistency of the extracted landmarks between adjacent frames. In this paper, we propose a novel model that produces high-fidelity talking head videos with free control over head pose and expression. Our method leverages both self-supervised learned landmarks and 3D face model-based landmarks to model the motion. We also introduce a novel motion-aware multi-scale feature alignment module to effectively transfer the motion without face distortion. Furthermore, we enhance the smoothness of the synthesized talking head videos with a feature context adaptation and propagation module. We evaluate our model on challenging datasets and demonstrate its state-of-the-art performance.
