S2S-Arena: Evaluating Paralinguistic Instruction Following in Speech-to-Speech Models

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have fundamentally reshaped speech-to-speech (S2S) systems, enabling increasingly natural spoken interaction. However, existing benchmarks still rely heavily on text-based evaluation and largely ignore paralinguistic cues such as prosody, emotion, and speaker traits, which are central to expressive and human-like communication. We introduce S2S-Arena, a speech-native benchmark for evaluating instruction-following S2S models with explicit assessment of both semantic understanding and paralinguistic expression. S2S-Arena features a four-level interaction protocol that systematically probes models under increasing paralinguistic complexity, a two-stage data construction pipeline that produces 1,243 speech samples spanning 100+ real-world tasks, and an arena-style evaluation framework that enables reference-free, pairwise comparison directly in the speech modality. Benchmarking 10 state-of-the-art S2S systems over 1,000+ comparisons reveals substantial performance gaps (especially under complex paralinguistic demands) between current academic and industrial systems. Our analysis further identifies key design factors governing expressive instruction following, providing actionable insights for building more natural, robust, and human-aligned speech agents.

An axiomatization of matroids and oriented matroids as conditional independence models

Matroids and semigraphoids are discrete structures abstracting and generalizing linear independence among vectors and conditional independence among random variables, respectively. Despite the different nature of conditional independence from linear independence, deep connections between these two areas are found and still undergoing active research. In this paper, we give a characterization of the embedding of matroids into conditional independence structures and its oriented counterpart, which lead to new axiom systems of matroids and oriented matroids.

The leading coefficient of Lascoux polynomials

Lascoux polynomials have been recently introduced to prove polynomiality of the maximum-likelihood degree of linear concentration models. We find the leading coefficient of the Lascoux polynomials (type C) and their generalizations to the case of general matrices (type A) and skew symmetric matrices (type D). In particular, we determine the degrees of such polynomials. As an application, we find the degree of the polynomial $\delta(m,n,n-s)$ of the algebraic degree of semidefinite programming, and when $s=1$ we find its leading coefficient for types C, A and D.

Digraph Polynomials for Counting Cycles and Paths

Many polynomial invariants are defined on graphs for encoding the combinatorial information and researching them algebraically. In this paper, we introduce the cycle polynomial and the path polynomial of directed graphs for counting cycles and paths, respectively. They satisfy recurrence relations with respect to elementary edge or vertex operations. They are related to other polynomials and can also be generalized to the bivariate cycle polynomial, the bivariate path polynomial and the trivariate cycle-path polynomial. And a most general digraph polynomial satisfying such a linear recurrence relation is recursively defined and shown to be co-reducible to the trivariate cycle-path polynomial. We also give an explicit expression of this polynomial.
