Experimental Review on Bulk Properties and Light/Strange Hadron Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions

This proceedings article reviews recent experimental results on bulk properties and light/strange hadron production in heavy-ion collisions, presented at the Strangeness in Quark Matter 2026 conference. The discussion covers the QCD phase diagram, extraction of the temperature-dependent speed of sound, radial flow fluctuations probed by $v_0(p_T)$, anisotropic flow in small collision systems, strange hadron yields across system sizes, nuclear modification factors, and collectivity signatures at high baryon density. Results from the STAR, CMS, ALICE, ATLAS, PHENIX, NA61/SHINE, and HADES collaborations are synthesized to highlight recent progress in understanding the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma and the nature of the QCD phase transition.

The quantum kinetic equation and dynamical mass generation in 2+1 Dimensions

In this work, we study the relativistic quantum kinetic equations in 2+1 dimensions from Wigner function formalism by carrying out a systematic semi-classical expansion up to $\hbar$ order. The derived equations allow us to explore interesting transport phenomena in 2+1 dimensions. Within this framework, the parity-odd transport current induced by the external electromagnetic field is self-consistently derived. We also examine the dynamical mass generation by implementing four-fermion interaction with mean-field approximation. In this case, a new kind of transport current is found to be induced by the gradient of the mean-field condensate. Finally, we also utilize this framework to study the dynamical mass generation in an external magnetic field for the 2+1 dimensional system under equilibrium.

Letter of Intent: Jinping Neutrino Experiment

Jinping Neutrino Experiment (Jinping) is proposed to significantly improve measurements on solar neutrinos and geoneutrinos in China Jinping Laboratory - a lab with a number of unparalleled features, thickest overburden, lowest reactor neutrino background, etc., which identify it as the world-best low-energy neutrino laboratory. The proposed experiment will have target mass of 4 kilotons of liquid scintillator or water-based liquid scintillator, with a fiducial mass of 2 kilotons for neutrino-electron scattering events and 3 kilotons for inverse-beta interaction events. A number of initial sensitivities studies have been carried out, including on the transition phase for the solar neutrinos oscillation from the vacuum to the matter effect, the discovery of solar neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle, the resolution of the high and low metallicity hypotheses, and the unambiguous separation on U and Th cascade decays from the dominant crustal anti-electron neutrinos in China.

Ks, Lambda and Xi production at intermediate to high pT from Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 39, 11.5 and 7.7 GeV

We report on the pT dependence of nuclear modification factors ($R_{CP}$) for Ks, Lambda, Xi and the Anti-Lambda/Ks ratios at mid-rapidity from Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 39, 11.5 and 7.7 GeV. At \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 39 GeV, the $R_{CP}$ data shows a baryon/meson separation at intermediate pT and a suppression for Ks for pT up to 4.5 GeV/$c$; the Anti-Lambda/Ks shows baryon enhancement in the most central collisions. However, at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 11.5 and 7.7 GeV, $R_{CP}$ shows much less baryon/meson separation and Anti-Lambda/Ks shows almost no baryon enhancement. These observations indicate that the matter created in Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 11.5 or 7.7 GeV might be distinct from that created at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 39 GeV.

Measurements of Ks, Lambda and Xi from Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_NN} = 7.7, 11.5 and 39 GeV in STAR

We report on the measurements of Ks, Lambda and Xi spectra at mid-rapidity (|y|<0.5) in the most central (0-5%) Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_NN} = 7.7, 11.5 and 39 GeV from the STAR experiment. The extracted yields and the corresponding data from Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 and CERES experiments at SPS are consistent. The Lambda, Anti-Lambda, Xi- and Xi+ to pion ratios agree well with the predictions from a statistical hadronization model at all three energies.

Effect of final state interactions on particle production in $d$+Au collisions at RHIC

We show that particle species dependence of enhanced hadron production at intermediate transverse momentum (p_{T}) for d+Au collisions at RHIC can be understood in terms of the hadronic rescatterings in the final state. A multiphase transport model (AMPT) with two different hadronization mechanisms: string fragmentation or parton coalescence, is used in our study. When the hadrons are formed from string fragmentation, the subsequent hadronic rescatterings will result in particle mass dependence of nuclear modification factor R_{CP}, which is consistent with the present experimental data. On the other hand, in the framework of parton coalescence, the mass dependence disappears and the strangeness plays an important role. Both mechanisms failed to reproduce the p_{T} dependence of R_{CP} of pion, indicating that initial-state effects might be also important in such collisions.

Strangeness production in d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV in STAR

We report on the measurements of strange hadron ($K^0_S$, $Λ$, $Ξ$) production in the most central (0-20%) d+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV in STAR. Significant strangeness enhancement is observed in the most central d+Au collisions, especially for multi-strange hyperons ($Ξ$). The nuclear modification factor ($R_{dAu}$) of identified particles shows possible particle type -- baryon (protons, $Λ$), meson ($π$,$K^0_S$, $ϕ$) -- dependence at intermediate $p_T$ (2 - 3.5 GeV/c), indicating that the final state may have an impact on the Cronin effect.

Directed and elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions from $E_{\rm beam}=90$ MeV/nucleon to $E_{\rm c.m.}=200$ GeV/nucleon

Recent data from the NA49 experiment on directed and elliptic flow for Pb+Pb reactions at CERN-SPS are compared to calculations with a hadron-string transport model, the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. The rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the directed and elliptic flow, i.e. $v_1$ and $v_2$, are investigated. The flow results are compared to data at three different centrality bins. Generally, a reasonable agreement between the data and the calculations is found. Furthermore, the energy excitation functions of $v_1$ and $v_2$ from $E_{\rm beam}=90A$ MeV to $E_{\rm cm}=200A$ GeV are explored within the UrQMD framework and discussed in the context of the available data. It is found that, in the energy regime below $E_{\rm beam}\leq 10A$ GeV, the inclusion of nuclear potentials is necessary to describe the data. Above $40A$ GeV beam energy, the UrQMD model starts to underestimate the elliptic flow. Around the same energy the slope of the rapidity spectra of the proton directed flow develops negative values. This effect is known as the third flow component ("antiflow") and cannot be reproduced by the transport model. These differences can possibly be explained by assuming a phase transition from hadron gas to quark gluon plasma at about $40A$ GeV.

Transport model analysis of the transverse momentum and rapidity dependence of pion interferometry at SPS energies

Based on the UrQMD transport model, the transverse momentum and the rapidity dependence of the Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) radii $R_L$, $R_O$, $R_S$ as well as the cross term $R_{OL}$ at SPS energies are investigated and compared with the experimental NA49 and CERES data. The rapidity dependence of the $R_L$, $R_O$, $R_S$ is weak while the $R_{OL}$ is significantly increased at large rapidities and small transverse momenta. The HBT "life-time" issue (the phenomenon that the calculated $\sqrt{R_O^{2}-R_S^{2}}$ value is larger than the correspondingly extracted experimental data) is also present at SPS energies.

Elliptic Flow Analysis at RHIC with the Lee-Yang Zeroes Method in a Relativistic Transport Approach

The Lee-Yang zeroes method is applied to study elliptic flow ($v_2$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200A$~GeV, with the UrQMD model. In this transport approach, the true event plane is known and both the nonflow effects and event-by-event $v_2$ fluctuations exist. Although the low resolutions prohibit the application of the method for most central and peripheral collisions, the integral and differential elliptic flow from the Lee-Yang zeroes method agrees with the exact $v_2$ values very well for semi-central collisions.

Elliptic Flow Analysis at RHIC: Fluctuations vs. Non-Flow Effects

The cumulant method is applied to study elliptic flow ($v_2$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$AGeV, with the UrQMD model. In this approach, the true event plane is known and both the non-flow effects and event-by-event spatial ($ε$) and $v_2$ fluctuations exist. Qualitatively, the hierarchy of $v_2$'s from two, four and six-particle cumulants is consistent with the STAR data, however, the magnitude of $v_2$ in the UrQMD model is only 60% of the data. We find that the four and six-particle cumulants are good measures of the real elliptic flow over a wide range of centralities except for the most central and very peripheral events. There the cumulant method is affected by the $v_2$ fluctuations. In mid-central collisions, the four and six-particle cumulants are shown to give a good estimation of the true differential $v_2$, especially at large transverse momentum, where the two-particle cumulant method is heavily affected by the non-flow effects.

J/psi transport in QGP and Pt distribution at SPS and RHIC

Combining the hydrodynamic equations for the QGP evolution and the transport equation for the primordially produced $J/ψ$ in the QGP, we investigate the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum distribution as well as its suppression in the $\sqrt{s}$=17.3A GeV Pb-Pb collisions at SPS and $\sqrt{s}$=200A GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC. The two sets of equations are connected by the $J/ψ$ anomalous suppression induced by its inelastic scattering with gluons in the QGP. The calculated centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression and average transverse momentum square agree well with the SPS data. From the comparison with the coalescence model where charm quark is fully thermalized, our calculated elliptical flow of the primordially produced $J/ψ$ is much smaller. This may be helpful to differentiate the $J/ψ$ production mechanisms in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Exact Calculation of Ring Diagrams and the Off-shell Effect on the Equation of State

The partition function with ring diagrams at finite temperature is exactly caluclated by using contour integrals in the complex energy plane. It contains a pole part with temperature and momentum dependent mass and a phase shift part induced by off-shell effect in hot medium. The thermodynamic potentials for $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^3$ interactions are calculated and compared with the quasi-particle (pole) approximation. It is found that the off-shell effect on the equation of state is remarkable.

Leakage Effect on J/psi Pt Distributions in Different Centrality Bins for Pb-Pb Collisions at E/A=160 GeV

A transport approach including a leakage effect for J/psi's in the transverse phase space is used to calculate the ratios between the J/psi transverse momentum distributions in several centrality bins for Pb-Pb collisions at E/A = 160 GeV. From the comparison with the CERN-SPS data, where the centrality is characterized by the transverse energy Et, the leakage effect is extremely important in the region of high transverse momentum and high transverse energy, and both the threshold and the comover models can describe the ratio well for all centrality bins except the most central one (Et < 100 GeV), for which the comover model calculation is considerably better than the threshold one.

Decay Process Sigma to 2 Pions and Chiral Phase Transition

The decay process sigma to 2 pions at high temperature and density and its relation with chiral phase transition are discussed in the framework of the NJL model. The decay rate for the process sigma to 2 pions is calculated in the whole temperature and density region. The contribution of the final state pion statistics to the decay rate is discussed. The maximum decay rate at different chemical potential is computed. Finally, we investigate the relation between the starting point of the decay process and the critical point of the first-order chiral phase transition.
