Optimized Skeleton-based Action Recognition via Sparsified Graph Regression

With the prevalence of accessible depth sensors, dynamic human body skeletons have attracted much attention as a robust modality for action recognition. Previous methods model skeletons based on RNN or CNN, which has limited expressive power for irregular skeleton joints. While graph convolutional networks (GCN) have been proposed to address irregular graph-structured data, the fundamental graph construction remains challenging. In this paper, we represent skeletons naturally on graphs, and propose a graph regression based GCN (GR-GCN) for skeleton-based action recognition, aiming to capture the spatio-temporal variation in the data. As the graph representation is crucial to graph convolution, we first propose graph regression to statistically learn the underlying graph from multiple observations. In particular, we provide spatio-temporal modeling of skeletons and pose an optimization problem on the graph structure over consecutive frames, which enforces the sparsity of the underlying graph for efficient representation. The optimized graph not only connects each joint to its neighboring joints in the same frame strongly or weakly, but also links with relevant joints in the previous and subsequent frames. We then feed the optimized graph into the GCN along with the coordinates of the skeleton sequence for feature learning, where we deploy high-order and fast Chebyshev approximation of spectral graph convolution. Further, we provide analysis of the variation characterization by the Chebyshev approximation. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed graph regression and show that the proposed GR-GCN achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the widely used NTU RGB+D, UT-Kinect and SYSU 3D datasets.

The Generalized Boltzmann Distribution is the Only Distribution in Which the Gibbs-Shannon Entropy Equals the Thermodynamic Entropy

We show that the generalized Boltzmann distribution is the only distribution for which the Gibbs-Shannon entropy equals the thermodynamic entropy. This result means that the thermodynamic entropy and the Gibbs-Shannon entropy are not generally equal, but rather than the equality holds only in the special case where a system is in equilibrium with a reservoir.

Jointly Optimizing Diversity and Relevance in Neural Response Generation

Although recent neural conversation models have shown great potential, they often generate bland and generic responses. While various approaches have been explored to diversify the output of the conversation model, the improvement often comes at the cost of decreased relevance. In this paper, we propose a SpaceFusion model to jointly optimize diversity and relevance that essentially fuses the latent space of a sequence-to-sequence model and that of an autoencoder model by leveraging novel regularization terms. As a result, our approach induces a latent space in which the distance and direction from the predicted response vector roughly match the relevance and diversity, respectively. This property also lends itself well to an intuitive visualization of the latent space. Both automatic and human evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed approach brings significant improvement compared to strong baselines in both diversity and relevance.

Understanding the Mechanism of Deep Learning Framework for Lesion Detection in Pathological Images with Breast Cancer

The computer-aided detection (CADe) systems are developed to assist pathologists in slide assessment, increasing diagnosis efficiency and reducing missing inspections. Many studies have shown such a CADe system with deep learning approaches outperforms the one using conventional methods that rely on hand-crafted features based on field-knowledge. However, most developers who adopted deep learning models directly focused on the efficacy of outcomes, without providing comprehensive explanations on why their proposed frameworks can work effectively. In this study, we designed four experiments to verify the consecutive concepts, showing that the deep features learned from pathological patches are interpretable by domain knowledge of pathology and enlightening for clinical diagnosis in the task of lesion detection. The experimental results show the activation features work as morphological descriptors for specific cells or tissues, which agree with the clinical rules in classification. That is, the deep learning framework not only detects the distribution of tumor cells but also recognizes lymphocytes, collagen fibers, and some other non-cell structural tissues. Most of the characteristics learned by the deep learning models have summarized the detection rules that can be recognized by the experienced pathologists, whereas there are still some features may not be intuitive to domain experts but discriminative in classification for machines. Those features are worthy to be further studied in order to find out the reasonable correlations to pathological knowledge, from which pathological experts may draw inspirations for exploring new characteristics in diagnosis.

Nanoscale angular lattice formed by light with high orbital angular

Standing waves generated by the interference of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams can be used for dipole trap. We propose a scheme to create a nanometer (nm) scale ring lattice based on the interference of two high order LG beams without decrease the wavelength. Both of the two LG beams have a monocyclic intensity distribution, and they have the same orbital angular momentum (OAM) quantum number on the order of $10^6$. We are able to theoretically demonstrate a dipole potential along angular direction with the period of $\sim$1 nm , given the waist of the Gaussian beams to be $\sim$0.8 $μ$m. The atoms in this lattice can be trapped along the radial and azimuthal direction in the potential wells of with $\sim$100 nm and $\sim$0.85 nm distance. The proposed method opens up a convenient pathway towards sub-wavelength atom traps that could directly lead to overlap of wave function of atoms in adjacent wells and the formation of molecular bonds.

Room-temperature ferromagnetic insulating state in highly cation-ordered epitaxial oxide double perovskite

Ferromagnetic insulators (FMIs) are one of the most important components in developing dissipationless electronic and spintronic devices. However, since ferromagnetism generally accompanies metallicity, FMIs are innately rare to find in nature. Here, novel room-temperature FMI films are epitaxially synthesized by deliberate control of the ratio of two B-site cations in the double perovskite Sr2FeReO6. In contrast to the known ferromagnetic metallic phase in stoichiometric Sr2FeReO6, a FMI state with a high Curie temperature (Tc~400 K) and a large saturation magnetization (MS~1.8 μB/f.u.) is found in highly cation-ordered Fe-rich phases. The stabilization of the FMI state is attributed to the formation of extra Fe3+-Fe3+ and Fe3+-Re6+ bonding states, which originate from the excess Fe. The emerging FMI state by controlling cations in the epitaxial oxide perovskites opens the door to developing novel oxide quantum materials & heterostructures.

Fourier decay rate of coin-tossing type measures

The Fourier decay rate of a coin-tossing type measure is investigated. Explicit estimation is given. Our method relies upon a classical result of Hartman and Kershner. As an application, we present a new example of a measure whose Fourier decay rate could be as slowly as we please, and for this measure almost every point is absolutely normal.

Diffusion-controlled Alloying of Single-phase Multi-principal Covalent Transition Metal Carbides with Enhanced Damage tolerance and Exceptional Thermal Properties

Multicomponent alloying has displayed extraordinary potential for producing exceptional structural and functional materials. However, the synthesis of single-phase, multi-principal covalent compounds remains a challenge. Here we present a diffusion-controlled alloying strategy for the successful realization of covalent multi-principal transition metal carbides (MPTMCs) with a single face-centered cubic (FCC) phase. The increased interfacial diffusion promoted by the addition of a nonstoichiometric compound leads to rapid formation of the new single phase at much lower sintering temperature. Direct atomic-level observations via scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that MPTMCs are composed of a single phase with a random distribution of all cations, which holds the key to the unique combinations of improved fracture toughness, superior Vickers hardness, and extremely lower thermal diffusivity achieved in MPTMCs. The present discovery provides a promising approach toward the design and synthesis of next-generation high-performance materials.

LDSO: Direct Sparse Odometry with Loop Closure

In this paper we present an extension of Direct Sparse Odometry (DSO) to a monocular visual SLAM system with loop closure detection and pose-graph optimization (LDSO). As a direct technique, DSO can utilize any image pixel with sufficient intensity gradient, which makes it robust even in featureless areas. LDSO retains this robustness, while at the same time ensuring repeatability of some of these points by favoring corner features in the tracking frontend. This repeatability allows to reliably detect loop closure candidates with a conventional feature-based bag-of-words (BoW) approach. Loop closure candidates are verified geometrically and Sim(3) relative pose constraints are estimated by jointly minimizing 2D and 3D geometric error terms. These constraints are fused with a co-visibility graph of relative poses extracted from DSO's sliding window optimization. Our evaluation on publicly available datasets demonstrates that the modified point selection strategy retains the tracking accuracy and robustness, and the integrated pose-graph optimization significantly reduces the accumulated rotation-, translation- and scale-drift, resulting in an overall performance comparable to state-of-the-art feature-based systems, even without global bundle adjustment.

Global Norm-Aware Pooling for Pose-Robust Face Recognition at Low False Positive Rate

In this paper, we propose a novel Global Norm-Aware Pooling (GNAP) block, which reweights local features in a convolutional neural network (CNN) adaptively according to their L2 norms and outputs a global feature vector with a global average pooling layer. Our GNAP block is designed to give dynamic weights to local features in different spatial positions without losing spatial symmetry. We use a GNAP block in a face feature embedding CNN to produce discriminative face feature vectors for pose-robust face recognition. The GNAP block is of very cheap computational cost, but it is very powerful for frontal-profile face recognition. Under the CFP frontal-profile protocol, the GNAP block can not only reduce EER dramatically but also boost TPR@FPR=0.1% (TPR i.e. True Positive Rate, FPR i.e. False Positive Rate) substantially. Our experiments show that the GNAP block greatly promotes pose-robust face recognition over the base model especially at low false positive rate.

Single Crystal High Entropy Perovskite Oxide Epitaxial Films

The first examples of single crystal epitaxial thin films of a high entropy perovskite oxide are synthesized. Pulsed laser deposition is used to grow the configurationally disordered ABO3 perovskite, Ba(Zr0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3, epitaxially on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates. X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that the films are single phase with excellent crystallinity and atomically abrupt interfaces to the underlying substrates. Atomically-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy mapping shows a uniform and random distribution of all B-site cations. The ability to stabilize perovskites with this level of configurational disorder offers new possibilities for designing materials from a much broader combinatorial cation pallet while providing a fresh avenue for fundamental studies in strongly correlated quantum materials where local disorder can play a critical role in determining macroscopic properties.

Upgrade of the Data Acquisition and Control System of Microwave Reflectometry on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak

The reflectometry on Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) is undergoing an upgrade for more comprehensive measurement of plasma density profile and fluctuation. The Data Acquisition and Control System (DACS) has been redeveloped to satisfy the requirements of the upgraded reflectometry. The profile reflectometry works in 30-110 GHz (X-mode) and 40-90GHz (O-mode), when the fluctuation reflectometry operates at 20 fixed frequency points in 50-110GHz (X-mode) and 20-60GHz (O-mode). The PXIe-based DACS includes two 8-channel 14-bit 250MSPS digitizers and ten 8-channel 12-bit 60MSPS digitizers. A self-developed 5-channel 250MSPS arbiter waveform generator (AWG) is used to control voltage control oscillators for frequency sweeping. A trigger and clock manger and a timing module receive the trigger and clock signal from central controller and synchronize all the digitizers and the AWG. The total data rate from digitizers is 2515 MB/S. The Data from digitizers is streamed to a disk array (RAID 0) with data throughput capacity of 3000 MB/S. Meanwhile, selected data is transported to a FPGA based real-time data processing module, which utilize a pre-trained neural network to calculate the plasma density profile. Now the new reflectometry is being installed on EAST, and its performance will be tested in experimental campaign after 2018.

MobileFaceNets: Efficient CNNs for Accurate Real-Time Face Verification on Mobile Devices

We present a class of extremely efficient CNN models, MobileFaceNets, which use less than 1 million parameters and are specifically tailored for high-accuracy real-time face verification on mobile and embedded devices. We first make a simple analysis on the weakness of common mobile networks for face verification. The weakness has been well overcome by our specifically designed MobileFaceNets. Under the same experimental conditions, our MobileFaceNets achieve significantly superior accuracy as well as more than 2 times actual speedup over MobileNetV2. After trained by ArcFace loss on the refined MS-Celeb-1M, our single MobileFaceNet of 4.0MB size achieves 99.55% accuracy on LFW and 92.59% TAR@FAR1e-6 on MegaFace, which is even comparable to state-of-the-art big CNN models of hundreds MB size. The fastest one of MobileFaceNets has an actual inference time of 18 milliseconds on a mobile phone. For face verification, MobileFaceNets achieve significantly improved efficiency over previous state-of-the-art mobile CNNs.

Challenges in Monocular Visual Odometry: Photometric Calibration, Motion Bias and Rolling Shutter Effect

Monocular visual odometry (VO) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) have seen tremendous improvements in accuracy, robustness and efficiency, and have gained increasing popularity over recent years. Nevertheless, not so many discussions have been carried out to reveal the influences of three very influential yet easily overlooked aspects: photometric calibration, motion bias and rolling shutter effect. In this work, we evaluate these three aspects quantitatively on the state of the art of direct, feature-based and semi-direct methods, providing the community with useful practical knowledge both for better applying existing methods and developing new algorithms of VO and SLAM. Conclusions (some of which are counter-intuitive) are drawn with both technical and empirical analyses to all of our experiments. Possible improvements on existing methods are directed or proposed, such as a sub-pixel accuracy refinement of ORB-SLAM which boosts its performance.

CSfM: Community-based Structure from Motion

Structure-from-Motion approaches could be broadly divided into two classes: incremental and global. While incremental manner is robust to outliers, it suffers from error accumulation and heavy computation load. The global manner has the advantage of simultaneously estimating all camera poses, but it is usually sensitive to epipolar geometry outliers. In this paper, we propose an adaptive community-based SfM (CSfM) method which takes both robustness and efficiency into consideration. First, the epipolar geometry graph is partitioned into separate communities. Then, the reconstruction problem is solved for each community in parallel. Finally, the reconstruction results are merged by a novel global similarity averaging method, which solves three convex $L1$ optimization problems. Experimental results show that our method performs better than many of the state-of-the-art global SfM approaches in terms of computational efficiency, while achieves similar or better reconstruction accuracy and robustness than many of the state-of-the-art incremental SfM approaches.

Deep reinforcement learning for time series: playing idealized trading games

Deep Q-learning is investigated as an end-to-end solution to estimate the optimal strategies for acting on time series input. Experiments are conducted on two idealized trading games. 1) Univariate: the only input is a wave-like price time series, and 2) Bivariate: the input includes a random stepwise price time series and a noisy signal time series, which is positively correlated with future price changes. The Univariate game tests whether the agent can capture the underlying dynamics, and the Bivariate game tests whether the agent can utilize the hidden relation among the inputs. Stacked Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) units, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) are used to model Q values. For both games, all agents successfully find a profitable strategy. The GRU-based agents show best overall performance in the Univariate game, while the MLP-based agents outperform others in the Bivariate game.

Generating scalable entanglement of ultracold bosons in superlattices through resonant shaking

Based on a one-dimensional double-well superlattice with a unit filling of ultracold atoms per site, we propose a scheme to generate scalable entangled states in the superlattice through resonant lattice shakings. Our scheme utilizes periodic lattice modulations to entangle two atoms in each unit cell with respect to their orbital degree of freedom, and the complete atomic system in the superlattice becomes a cluster of bipartite entangled atom pairs. To demonstrate this we perform $ab \ initio$ quantum dynamical simulations using the Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree Method for Bosons, which accounts for all correlations among the atoms. The proposed clusters of bipartite entanglements manifest as an essential resource for various quantum applications, such as measurement based quantum computation. The lattice shaking scheme to generate this cluster possesses advantages such as a high scalability, fast processing speed, rich controllability on the target entangled states, and accessibility with current experimental techniques.
