Moments of proton GPDs from the OPE of nonlocal quark bilinears up to NNLO

For the first time, we present a lattice QCD determination of Mellin moments of unpolarized generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton from an analysis of the quasi-GPD matrix elements within the short-distance factorization framework. We perform our calculation on an $N_f$=2+1+1 twisted mass fermions ensemble with a clover improvement at lattice spacing $a=0.093$ fm and a pion mass of $m_π=260$ MeV. Focusing on the zero-skewness case, the iso-vector and iso-scalar quasi-GPDs are calculated from the $γ_0$ definition, as well as a recently proposed Lorentz-invariant definition. We utilize data on both symmetric and asymmetric kinematic frames, which allows us to obtain the Mellin moments for several values of the momentum transfer, $-t$, in the range 0.17 to $2.77~\rm{GeV}^2$. We use the ratio scheme for GPDs, i.e. renormalization group invariant ratios with leading-twist factorization formula and perturbatively calculated matching coefficients up to the next-next-to-leading order (NNLO) to extract Mellin moments of GPDs, which are consistent with renormalization-group improved results. We compare our determination from quasi-GPDs with the results extracted using standard calculations of Mellin moments of local operators, specifically those related to the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors. We estimated the moments of GPDs up to the fifth ones for the first time. By extrapolating the Mellin moments to $-t=0$, we obtained the quark charges, momentum fraction, as well as the angular momentum contributions to the proton spin. The impact parameter space interpretation of the GPD moments is discussed, which provides insights into the spatial distribution of unpolarized quarks and their correlations in the transverse plane of an unpolarized or transversely polarized proton.

Non-LTE ionization potential depression model for warm and hot dense plasma

For warm and hot dense plasma (WHDP), the ionization potential depression (IPD) is a key physical parameter in determining its ionization balance, therefore a reliable and universal IPD model is highly required to understand its microscopic material properties and resolve those existing discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental results. However, the weak temperature dependence of the nowadays IPD models prohibits their application through much of the WHDP regime, especially for the non-LTE dense plasma produced by short-pulse laser. In this work, we propose a universal non-LTE IPD model with the contribution of the inelastic atomic processes, and found that three-body recombination and collision ionization processes become important in determining the electron distribution and further affect the IPD in warm and dense plasma. The proposed IPD model is applied to treat the IPD experiments available in warm and hot dense plasmas and excellent agreements are obtained in comparison with those latest experiments of the IPD for Al plasmas with wide-range conditions of 70-700 eV temperature and 0.2-3 times of solid density, as well as a typical non-LTE system of hollow Al ions. We demonstrate that the present IPD model has a significant temperature dependence due to the consideration of the inelastic atomic processes. With the low computational cost and wide range applicability of WHDP, the proposed model is expected to provide a promising tool to study the ionization balance and the atomic processes as well as the related radiation and particle transports properties of a wide range of WHDP.

Generalized Parton Distributions from Lattice QCD

In recent years, there has been a breakthrough in lattice calculations of $x$-dependent partonic distributions. This encompasses also distributions describing the 3D structure of the nucleon, such as generalized parton distributions (GPDs). We report a new method of accessing GPDs in asymmetric frames of reference, relying on a novel Lorentz-covariant parametrization of the accessed off-forward matrix elements in boosted nucleon states. The approach offers the possibility of computationally more efficient determination of the full parameter dependence of GPDs and as such, it can contribute to better understanding of nucleon's structure.

Unpolarized proton PDF at NNLO from lattice QCD with physical quark masses

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the unpolarized isovector quark parton distribution function (PDF) of the proton utilizing a perturbative matching at next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO). The calculations are carried out using a single ensemble of gauge configurations generated with $N_f = 2 + 1$ highly-improved staggered quarks with physical masses and a lattice spacing of $a = 0.076$ fm. We use one iteration of hypercubic smearing on these gauge configurations, and the resulting smeared configurations are then used for all aspects of the subsequent calculation. For the valence quarks, we use the Wilson-clover action with physical quark masses. We consider several methods for extracting information on the PDF. We first extract the lowest four Mellin moments using the leading-twist operator product expansion approximation. Then, we determine the $x$ dependence of the PDF through a deep neural network within the pseudo-PDF approach and additionally through the framework of large-momentum effective theory utilizing a hybrid renormalization scheme. This is the first application of the NNLO matching coefficients for the nucleon directly at the physical point.

GPDs in asymmetric frames

It is often taken for granted that Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) are defined in the "symmetric" frame, where the transferred momentum is symmetrically distributed between the incoming/outgoing hadrons. However, such frames pose computational challenges for the lattice QCD practitioners. In these proceedings, we lay the foundation for lattice QCD calculations of GPDs in "asymmetric" frames, where the transferred momentum is not symmetrically distributed between the incoming/outgoing hadrons. The novelty of our work relies on the parameterization of the matrix elements in terms of Lorentz-invariant amplitudes, which not only helps in establishing relations between the said frames but also helps in isolating higher-twist contaminations. As an example, we focus on the unpolarized GPDs for spin-1/2 particles.

Generalized Parton Distributions from Lattice QCD with Asymmetric Momentum Transfer: Unpolarized Quarks

Traditionally, lattice QCD computations of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) have been carried out in a symmetric frame, where the transferred momentum is symmetrically distributed between the incoming and outgoing hadrons. However, such frames are inconvenient since they require a separate calculation for each value of the momentum transfer, increasing significantly the computational cost. In this work, by focusing on the quasi-distribution approach, we lay the foundation for faster and more effective lattice QCD calculations of GPDs exploiting asymmetric frames, with freedom in the transferred momentum distribution. An important ingredient of our approach is the Lorentz covariant parameterization of the matrix elements in terms of Lorentz-invariant amplitudes, which allows one to relate matrix elements in different frames. We also use this amplitude approach to propose a new definition of quasi-GPDs that is frame-independent and, more importantly, may lead to smaller power corrections in the matching relations to the light-cone GPDs. We demonstrate the efficacy of the formalism through numerical calculations using one ensemble of $N_f$=2+1+1 twisted mass fermions with a clover improvement. The value of the light-quark masses lead to a pion mass of about 260 MeV. Concentrating on the proton, and limiting ourselves to a vanishing longitudinal momentum transfer to the target, we extract the invariant amplitudes from matrix element calculations in both the symmetric and asymmetric frame, and obtain results for the twist-2 light-cone GPDs for unpolarized quarks, that is, $H$ and $E$.

The study of eleven contact binaries with mass ratios less than 0.1

Multi-band photometric observations of eleven totally eclipsing contact binaries were carried out. Applying the Wilson-Devinney program, photometric solutions were obtained. There are two W-subtype systems, which are CRTS J133031.1+161202 and CRTS J154254.0+324652, and the rest systems are A-subtype systems. CRTS J154254.0+324652 has the highest fill-out factor with 94.3$\%$, and the lowest object is CRTS J155009.2+493639 with only 18.9$\%$. The mass ratios of the eleven systems are all less than 0.1, which means that they are extremely low mass ratio binary systems. We performed period variation investigation and found that the orbital periods of three systems decrease slowly, which may be caused by the angular momentum loss, and of six systems increase slowly, which indicates that the materials may transfer from the secondary component to the primary component. LAMOST low$-$resolution spectra of four objects were analyzed, and using the spectral subtraction technique, H$α$ emission line was detected, which means that the four objects exhibit chromospheric activity. In order to understand their evolutionary status, the mass-luminosity and mass-radius diagrams were plotted. The two diagrams indicate that the primary component is in the main sequence evolution stage, and the secondary component is above TAMS, indicating that they are over-luminous. To determine whether the eleven systems are in stable state, the ratio of spin angular momentum to orbital angular momentum ($J_{s}/J_{o}$) and the instability parameters were calculated, and we argued that CRTS J234634.7+222824 is on the verge of a merger.

Automated Repair of Programs from Large Language Models

Large language models such as Codex, have shown the capability to produce code for many programming tasks. However, the success rate of existing models is low, especially for complex programming tasks. One of the reasons is that language models lack awareness of program semantics, resulting in incorrect programs, or even programs which do not compile. In this paper, we systematically study whether automated program repair (APR) techniques can fix the incorrect solutions produced by language models in LeetCode contests. The goal is to study whether APR techniques can enhance reliability in the code produced by large language models. Our study revealed that: (1) automatically generated code shares common programming mistakes with human-crafted solutions, indicating APR techniques may have potential to fix auto-generated code; (2) given bug location information provided by a statistical fault localization approach, the newly released Codex edit mode, which supports editing code, is similar to or better than existing Java repair tools TBar and Recoder in fixing incorrect solutions. By analyzing the experimental results generated by these tools, we provide several suggestions: (1) enhancing APR tools to surpass limitations in patch space (e.g., introducing more flexible fault localization) is desirable; (2) as large language models can derive more fix patterns by training on more data, future APR tools could shift focus from adding more fix patterns to synthesis/semantics based approaches, (3) combination of language models with APR to curate patch ingredients, is worth studying.

Continuum-extrapolated NNLO Valence PDF of Pion at the Physical Point

We present lattice QCD calculations of valence parton distribution function (PDF) of pion employing next-to-next-leading-order (NNLO) perturbative QCD matching. Our calculations are based on three gauge ensembles of 2+1 flavor highly improved staggered quarks and Wilson--Clover valance quarks, corresponding to pion mass $m_π=140$~MeV at a lattice spacing $a=0.076$~fm and $m_π=300$~MeV at $a=0.04, 0.06$~fm. This enables us to present, for the first time, continuum-extrapolated lattice QCD results for NNLO valence PDF of the pion at the physical point. Applying leading-twist expansion for renormalization group invariant (RGI) ratios of bi-local pion matrix elements with NNLO Wilson coefficients we extract $2^{\mathrm{nd}}$, $4^{\mathrm{th}}$ and $6^{\mathrm{th}}$ Mellin moments of the PDF. We reconstruct the Bjorken-$x$ dependence of the NNLO PDF from real-space RGI ratios using a deep neural network (DNN) as well as from momentum-space matrix elements renormalized using a hybrid-scheme. All our results are in broad agreement with the results of global fits to the experimental data carried out by the xFitter and JAM collaborations.

Accessing proton GPDs in asymmetric frames: Numerical implementation

In this work, we present a numerical investigation of a novel Lorentz-covariant parametrization to extract $x$-dependent GPDs using off-forward matrix elements of momentum-boosted hadrons coupled to non-local operators. The novelty of the method is the implementation of an asymmetric frame for the momentum transfer between the initial and final hadron state and the parametrization of the matrix elements into Lorentz-invariant amplitudes. The amplitudes can then be related to the standard light-cone GPDs. GPDs are defined in the symmetric frame, which requires a separate calculation for each value of the momentum transfer, increasing the computational cost significantly. The proposed method is powerful, as one can extract the GPDs at multiple values of the momentum transfer at the computational cost of a single value. For this proof-of-concept calculation, we use one ensemble of $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass fermions and a clover improvement with a pion mass of 260 MeV to calculate the proton unpolarized GPDs.

Learning Regularized Positional Encoding for Molecular Prediction

Machine learning has become a promising approach for molecular modeling. Positional quantities, such as interatomic distances and bond angles, play a crucial role in molecule physics. The existing works rely on careful manual design of their representation. To model the complex nonlinearity in predicting molecular properties in an more end-to-end approach, we propose to encode the positional quantities with a learnable embedding that is continuous and differentiable. A regularization technique is employed to encourage embedding smoothness along the physical dimension. We experiment with a variety of molecular property and force field prediction tasks. Improved performance is observed for three different model architectures after plugging in the proposed positional encoding method. In addition, the learned positional encoding allows easier physics-based interpretation. We observe that tasks of similar physics have the similar learned positional encoding.

Supervised Pretraining for Molecular Force Fields and Properties Prediction

Machine learning approaches have become popular for molecular modeling tasks, including molecular force fields and properties prediction. Traditional supervised learning methods suffer from scarcity of labeled data for particular tasks, motivating the use of large-scale dataset for other relevant tasks. We propose to pretrain neural networks on a dataset of 86 millions of molecules with atom charges and 3D geometries as inputs and molecular energies as labels. Experiments show that, compared to training from scratch, fine-tuning the pretrained model can significantly improve the performance for seven molecular property prediction tasks and two force field tasks. We also demonstrate that the learned representations from the pretrained model contain adequate information about molecular structures, by showing that linear probing of the representations can predict many molecular information including atom types, interatomic distances, class of molecular scaffolds, and existence of molecular fragments. Our results show that supervised pretraining is a promising research direction in molecular modeling

Magnetic monopole induced polarons in atomic superlattices

Magnetic monopoles have been realized as emergent quasiparticles in both condensed matter and ultracold atomic platforms, with growing interests in the coupling effects between the monopole and different magnetic quasiparticles. In this work, interaction effects between monopoles and magnons are investigated for an atomic pseudospin chain. We reveal that the monopole can excite a virtual magnon cloud in the paramagnetic chain, thereby giving rise to a new type of polaron, the monopole-cored polaron (McP). The McP is composed of the monopole as the impurity core and the virtual magnon excitation as the dressing cloud. The magnon dressing facilitates the Dirac string excitation and impacts the monopole hopping. This induces an anti-trapping effect of the McP, which refers to the fact that the dressing enhances the mobility of the McP, in contrast to the self-trapping of the common polarons. Moreover, heterogeneous bipolarons are shown to exist under the simultaneous doping of a north and a south monopole. The heterogeneous bipolaron possesses an inner degree of freedom composed of two identical impurities. Our investigation sheds light on the understanding of how the coupling between the impurity core and the dressing cloud can engineer the property of the polaron

Learning Latent Part-Whole Hierarchies for Point Clouds

Strong evidence suggests that humans perceive the 3D world by parsing visual scenes and objects into part-whole hierarchies. Although deep neural networks have the capability of learning powerful multi-level representations, they can not explicitly model part-whole hierarchies, which limits their expressiveness and interpretability in processing 3D vision data such as point clouds. To this end, we propose an encoder-decoder style latent variable model that explicitly learns the part-whole hierarchies for the multi-level point cloud segmentation. Specifically, the encoder takes a point cloud as input and predicts the per-point latent subpart distribution at the middle level. The decoder takes the latent variable and the feature from the encoder as an input and predicts the per-point part distribution at the top level. During training, only annotated part labels at the top level are provided, thus making the whole framework weakly supervised. We explore two kinds of approximated inference algorithms, i.e., most-probable-latent and Monte Carlo methods, and three stochastic gradient estimations for learning discrete latent variables, i.e., straight-through, REINFORCE, and pathwise estimators. Experimental results on the PartNet dataset show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in not only top-level part segmentation but also middle-level latent subpart segmentation.

Pion distribution amplitude at the physical point using the leading-twist expansion of the quasi-distribution-amplitude matrix element

We present a lattice QCD determination of the distribution amplitude (DA) of the pion and the first few Mellin moments from an analysis of the quasi-DA matrix element within the leading-twist framework. We perform our study on a HISQ ensemble with $a=0.076$ fm lattice spacing with the Wilson-Clover valence quark mass tuned to the physical point. We analyze the ratios of pion quasi-DA matrix elements at short distances using the leading-twist Mellin operator product expansion (OPE) at the next-to-leading order and the conformal OPE at the leading-logarithmic order. We find a robust result for the first non-vanishing Mellin moment $\langle x^2 \rangle = 0.287(6)(6)$ at a factorization scale $μ=2$ GeV. We also present different Ansätze-based reconstructions of the $x$-dependent DA, from which we determine the perturbative leading-twist expectations for the pion electromagnetic and gravitational form-factors at large momentum transfers.

The First Photometric and Orbital Period Investigation of an Extremely Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary with a Sudden Period Change, TYC 4002-2628-1

Photometric observations for the totally eclipsing binary system TYC 4002-2628-1, were obtained between November 2020 and November 2021. To determine the stellar atmospheric parameters, a spectral image was taken with the 2.16 m telescope at National Astronomical Observatory of China (NAOC). TYC 4002-2628-1 is a low-amplitude (about 0.15 mag for $V$ band), short-period (0.3670495 d), contact eclipsing binary with a total secondary eclipse. Intrinsic light curve variations and the reversal of the O'Connell effect are detected in the light curves, which may be due to spot activity. Based on the photometric solutions derived from the multi-band time series light curves, TYC 4002-2628-1 is an extremely low mass ratio contact binary with a mass ratio of $q\sim$ 0.0482 and a fill-out factor of $f\sim5\%$. By analyzing the $O-C$ variations, we find that its orbital period remains unchanged when BJD < 2458321 . Then the orbital period changed suddenly around BJD 2458743 and has an increasing rate of $dP/dt=1.62\times{10^{-5}}day\cdot yr^{-1}=140$ $second\cdot century^{-1}$ . If confirmed, TYC 4002-2628-1 would be the contact binary with the highest orbital period increasing rate so far. By investigating the ratio of orbital angular momentum to the spin angular momentum ( $J_{orb}$/$J_{spin}$ $<3$) , the instability mass ratio ($q_{inst}/q=1.84$) and the instability separation ($A_{inst}/A=1.35$), TYC 4002-2628-1 can be regarded as a merger candidate.

Quantum Hall phase in graphene engineered by interfacial charge coupling

Quantum Hall effect (QHE), the ground to construct modern conceptual electronic systems with emerging physics, is often much influenced by the interplay between the host two-dimensional electron gases and the substrate, sometimes predicted to exhibit exotic topological states. Yet the understanding of the underlying physics and the controllable engineering of this paradigm of interaction remain challenging. Here we demonstrate the observation of an unusual QHE, which differs markedly from the known picture, in graphene samples in contact with an anti-ferromagnetic insulator CrOCl equipped with dual gates. Owing to the peculiar interfacial coupling, Landau levels in monolayer graphene remain intact at negative filling fractions, but largely deviated for the positive gate-doping range. The latter QHE phase even presents in the limit of zero magnetic field, with the consequential Landau quantization following a parabolic relation between the displacement field $D$ and the magnetic field $B$. This characteristic prevails up to 100 K in a sufficiently wide effective doping range from 0 to 10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. Our findings thus open up new routes for manipulating the quantum electronic states, which may find applications in such as quantum metrology.
