Exploring Optical-Flow-Guided Motion and Detection-Based Appearance for Temporal Sentence Grounding

Temporal sentence grounding aims to localize a target segment in an untrimmed video semantically according to a given sentence query. Most previous works focus on learning frame-level features of each whole frame in the entire video, and directly match them with the textual information. Such frame-level feature extraction leads to the obstacles of these methods in distinguishing ambiguous video frames with complicated contents and subtle appearance differences, thus limiting their performance. In order to differentiate fine-grained appearance similarities among consecutive frames, some state-of-the-art methods additionally employ a detection model like Faster R-CNN to obtain detailed object-level features in each frame for filtering out the redundant background contents. However, these methods suffer from missing motion analysis since the object detection module in Faster R-CNN lacks temporal modeling. To alleviate the above limitations, in this paper, we propose a novel Motion- and Appearance-guided 3D Semantic Reasoning Network (MA3SRN), which incorporates optical-flow-guided motion-aware, detection-based appearance-aware, and 3D-aware object-level features to better reason the spatial-temporal object relations for accurately modelling the activity among consecutive frames. Specifically, we first develop three individual branches for motion, appearance, and 3D encoding separately to learn fine-grained motion-guided, appearance-guided, and 3D-aware object features, respectively. Then, both motion and appearance information from corresponding branches are associated to enhance the 3D-aware features for the final precise grounding. Extensive experiments on three challenging datasets (ActivityNet Caption, Charades-STA and TACoS) demonstrate that the proposed MA3SRN model achieves a new state-of-the-art.

Tightness of Bernoulli Gibbsian line ensembles

A Bernoulli Gibbsian line ensemble $\mathfrak{L} = (L_1, \dots, L_N)$ is the law of the trajectories of $N-1$ independent Bernoulli random walkers $L_1, \dots, L_{N-1}$ with possibly random initial and terminal locations that are conditioned to never cross each other or a given random up-right path $L_N$ (i.e. $L_1 \geq \cdots \geq L_N$). In this paper we investigate the asymptotic behavior of sequences of Bernoulli Gibbsian line ensembles $\mathfrak{L}^N = (L^N_1, \dots, L^N_N)$ when the number of walkers $N$ tends to infinity. We prove that if one has mild but uniform control of the one-point marginals of the lowest-indexed (or top) curves $L_1^N$ then the sequence $\mathfrak{L}^N$ is tight in the space of line ensembles. Furthermore, we show that if the top curves $L_1^N$ converge in the finite dimensional sense to the parabolic Airy$_2$ process then $\mathfrak{L}^N$ converge to the parabolically shifted Airy line ensemble.

A Gaussian version of Littlewood's theorem on random power series

We prove a Littlewood-type theorem on random analytic functions for not necessarily independent Gaussian processes. We show that if we randomize a function in the Hardy space $H^2(\dd)$ by a Gaussian process whose covariance matrix $K$ induces a bounded operator on $l^2$, then the resulting random function is almost surely in $H^p(\dd)$ for any $p>0$. The case $K=\text{Id}$, the identity operator, recovers Littlewood's theorem. A new ingredient in our proof is to recast the membership problem as the boundedness of an operator. This reformulation enables us to use tools in functional analysis and is applicable to other situations. The sharpness of the new condition and several ramifications are discussed.

Polynomial Chaos-Based Flight Control Optimization with Guaranteed Probabilistic Performance

A probabilistic performance-oriented controller design approach based on polynomial chaos expansion and optimization is proposed for flight dynamic systems. Unlike robust control techniques where uncertainties are conservatively handled, the proposed method aims at propagating uncertainties effectively and optimizing control parameters to satisfy the probabilistic requirements directly. To achieve this, the sensitivities of violation probabilities are evaluated by the expansion coefficients and the fourth moment method for reliability analysis, after which an optimization that minimizes failure probability under chance constraints is conducted. Afterward, a time-dependent polynomial chaos expansion is performed to validate the results. With this approach, the failure probability is reduced while guaranteeing the closed-loop performance, thus increasing the safety margin. Simulations are carried out on a longitudinal model subject to uncertain parameters to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Deep Learning Detection of Inaccurate Smart Electricity Meters: A Case Study

Detecting inaccurate smart meters and targeting them for replacement can save significant resources. For this purpose, a novel deep-learning method was developed based on long short-term memory (LSTM) and a modified convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict electricity usage trajectories based on historical data. From the significant difference between the predicted trajectory and the observed one, the meters that cannot measure electricity accurately are located. In a case study, a proof of principle was demonstrated in detecting inaccurate meters with high accuracy for practical usage to prevent unnecessary replacement and increase the service life span of smart meters.

Ladder Chains: A Variation of Random Walks

The authors propose a new variation of random walks called ladder chains $L(r,s,p)$. We extend concepts such as ruin probability, hitting time, transience and recurrence of random walks to ladder chain. Take $L(2,2,p)$ for instance, we find the linear difference equations that the ruin probability and the hitting time satisfy. We also prove the recurrence of a critical case $(p=\sqrt{2}-1)$. All approaches of these results can be generalized to solve similar problems for other ladder chains.

Random weighted shifts

In this paper we initiate the study of a fundamental yet untapped random model of non-selfadjoint, bounded linear operators acting on a separable complex Hilbert space. We replace the weights $w_n=1$ in the classical unilateral shift $T$, defined as $Te_n=w_ne_{n+1}$, where $\{e_n\}_{n=1}^\infty$ form an orthonormal basis of a complex Hilbert space, by a sequence of i.i.d. random variables $\{X_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$; that is, $w_n=X_n$. This paper answers basic questions concerning such a model. We propose that this model can be studied in comparison with the classical Hardy/Bergman/Dirichlet spaces in function-theoretic operator theory. We calculate the spectra and determine their fine structures (Section 3). We classify the samples up to four equivalence relationships (Section 4). We introduce a family of random Hardy spaces and determine the growth rate of the coefficients of analytic functions in these spaces (Section 5). We compare them with three types of classical operators (Section 6); this is achieved in the form of generalized von Neumann inequalities. The invariant subspaces are shown to admit arbitrarily large indices and their semi-invariant subspaces model arbitrary contractions almost surely. We discuss a Beurling-type theorem (Section 7). We determine various non-selfadjoint algebras generated by $T$ (Section 8). Their dynamical properties are clarified (Section 9). Their iterated Aluthge transforms are shown to converge (Section 10). In summary, they provide a new random model from the viewpoint of probability theory, and they provide a new class of analytic functional Hilbert spaces from the viewpoint of operator theory. The technical novelty in this paper is that the methodology used draws from three (largely separate) sources: probability theory, functional Hilbert spaces, and the approximation theory of bounded operators.

Three Remarks on Carleson Measures for Dirichlet Space

In this paper, we prove that all doubling measures on the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ are Carleson measures for the standard Dirichlet space $\mathcal{D}$. The proof has three ingredients. The first one is a characterization of Carleson measures which holds true for general reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. The second one is another new equivalent condition for Carleson measures, which holds true only for the standard Dirichlet space. The third one is an application of the dyadic method to our settings.

Composition Operators with Quasiconformal Symbols

This paper seeks to extend the theory of composition operators on analytic functional Hilbert spaces from analytic symbols to quasiconformal ones. The focus is the boundedness but operator-theoretic questions are discussed as well. In particular, we present a thorough analysis of $L^p$-estimates of a class of singular integral operators $P_φ$ associated with a quasiconformal mapping $φ$.

The Fredholm index of a pair of commuting operators

This paper concerns Fredholm theory in several variables, and its applications to Hilbert spaces of analytic functions. One feature is the introduction of ideas from commutative algebra to operator theory. Specifically, we introduce a method to calculate the Fredholm index of a pair of commuting operators. To achieve this, we define and study the Hilbert space analogs of Samuel multiplicities in commutative algebra. Then the theory is applied to the symmetric Fock space. In particular, our results imply a satisfactory answer to Arveson's program on developing a Fredholm theory for pure $d$-contractions when $d=2$, including both the Fredholmness problem and the calculation of indices. We also show that Arveson's curvature invariant is in fact always equal to the Samuel multiplicity for an arbitrary pure d-contraction with finite defect rank. It follows that the curvature is a similarity invariant.

On a Question of Arveson about Ranks of Hilbert modules

It's well known that the functional Hilbert space over the unit ball in $B_{d} \in C^d$, with kernel function $K(z,w)=\frac{1}{1-z_{1}w_{1}-... -z_{d}w_{d}}$, admits a natural $A(B_{d})$-module structure. We show the rank of a nonzero submodule is infinity if and only if the submodule is of infinite codimension. Together with Arveson's dilation theory, our result shows that Hilbert modules stand in stark contrast with Hilbert basis theorem for algebraic modules. This result answers a question of Arveson.
