Asymmetrical Uplink and Downlink Transceivers in Massive MIMO Systems

Even if massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can theoretically bring huge benefits, it incurs substantial hardware complexity and expensive hardware costs. To address these issues while maintaining the system performance simultaneously, we develop an asymmetrical transceiver architecture for massive MIMO systems in this paper by releasing the shackles on radio frequency (RF) chains. Specifically, we first develop the architecture for the asymmetrical transceiver where the number of receive RF chains is different from that of the transmit RF chains. Due to this unequal number of RF chains, channel inconsistency appears. To overcome the channel inconsistency and thus fully harness the system's downlink data transmission capability, we propose two uplink-to-downlink channel transfer algorithms. The cost and power consumption models for the asymmetrical transceiver are also developed and the uplink signal-to-noise loss due to the channel inconsistency is investigated. Through analyzing system spectral, cost, and energy efficiency, we demonstrate that the proposed asymmetrical transceiver-based massive MIMO system can achieve excellent downlink spectral efficiency while maintaining a reasonable energy efficiency.

Deep 3D Mesh Watermarking with Self-Adaptive Robustness

Robust 3D mesh watermarking is a traditional research topic in computer graphics, which provides an efficient solution to the copyright protection for 3D meshes. Traditionally, researchers need manually design watermarking algorithms to achieve sufficient robustness for the actual application scenarios. In this paper, we propose the first deep learning-based 3D mesh watermarking framework, which can solve this problem once for all. In detail, we propose an end-to-end network, consisting of a watermark embedding sub-network, a watermark extracting sub-network and attack layers. We adopt the topology-agnostic graph convolutional network (GCN) as the basic convolution operation for 3D meshes, so our network is not limited by registered meshes (which share a fixed topology). For the specific application scenario, we can integrate the corresponding attack layers to guarantee adaptive robustness against possible attacks. To ensure the visual quality of watermarked 3D meshes, we design a curvature-based loss function to constrain the local geometry smoothness of watermarked meshes. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve more universal robustness and faster watermark embedding than baseline methods while guaranteeing comparable visual quality.

Clinical Relation Extraction Using Transformer-based Models

The newly emerged transformer technology has a tremendous impact on NLP research. In the general English domain, transformer-based models have achieved state-of-the-art performances on various NLP benchmarks. In the clinical domain, researchers also have investigated transformer models for clinical applications. The goal of this study is to systematically explore three widely used transformer-based models (i.e., BERT, RoBERTa, and XLNet) for clinical relation extraction and develop an open-source package with clinical pre-trained transformer-based models to facilitate information extraction in the clinical domain. We developed a series of clinical RE models based on three transformer architectures, namely BERT, RoBERTa, and XLNet. We evaluated these models using 2 publicly available datasets from 2018 MADE1.0 and 2018 n2c2 challenges. We compared two classification strategies (binary vs. multi-class classification) and investigated two approaches to generate candidate relations in different experimental settings. In this study, we compared three transformer-based (BERT, RoBERTa, and XLNet) models for relation extraction. We demonstrated that the RoBERTa-clinical RE model achieved the best performance on the 2018 MADE1.0 dataset with an F1-score of 0.8958. On the 2018 n2c2 dataset, the XLNet-clinical model achieved the best F1-score of 0.9610. Our results indicated that the binary classification strategy consistently outperformed the multi-class classification strategy for clinical relation extraction. Our methods and models are publicly available at https://github.com/uf-hobi-informatics-lab/ClinicalTransformerRelationExtraction. We believe this work will improve current practice on clinical relation extraction and other related NLP tasks in the biomedical domain.

A Study of Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health in Lung Cancer Patients Using Transformers-based Natural Language Processing Models

Social and behavioral determinants of health (SBDoH) have important roles in shaping people's health. In clinical research studies, especially comparative effectiveness studies, failure to adjust for SBDoH factors will potentially cause confounding issues and misclassification errors in either statistical analyses and machine learning-based models. However, there are limited studies to examine SBDoH factors in clinical outcomes due to the lack of structured SBDoH information in current electronic health record (EHR) systems, while much of the SBDoH information is documented in clinical narratives. Natural language processing (NLP) is thus the key technology to extract such information from unstructured clinical text. However, there is not a mature clinical NLP system focusing on SBDoH. In this study, we examined two state-of-the-art transformer-based NLP models, including BERT and RoBERTa, to extract SBDoH concepts from clinical narratives, applied the best performing model to extract SBDoH concepts on a lung cancer screening patient cohort, and examined the difference of SBDoH information between NLP extracted results and structured EHRs (SBDoH information captured in standard vocabularies such as the International Classification of Diseases codes). The experimental results show that the BERT-based NLP model achieved the best strict/lenient F1-score of 0.8791 and 0.8999, respectively. The comparison between NLP extracted SBDoH information and structured EHRs in the lung cancer patient cohort of 864 patients with 161,933 various types of clinical notes showed that much more detailed information about smoking, education, and employment were only captured in clinical narratives and that it is necessary to use both clinical narratives and structured EHRs to construct a more complete picture of patients' SBDoH factors.

A Two-step Surface-based 3D Deep Learning Pipeline for Segmentation of Intracranial Aneurysms

The exact shape of intracranial aneurysms is critical in medical diagnosis and surgical planning. While voxel-based deep learning frameworks have been proposed for this segmentation task, their performance remains limited. In this study, we offer a two-step surface-based deep learning pipeline that achieves significantly higher performance. Our proposed model takes a surface model of entire principal brain arteries containing aneurysms as input and returns aneurysms surfaces as output. A user first generates a surface model by manually specifying multiple thresholds for time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography images. The system then samples small surface fragments from the entire brain arteries and classifies the surface fragments according to whether aneurysms are present using a point-based deep learning network (PointNet++). Finally, the system applies surface segmentation (SO-Net) to surface fragments containing aneurysms. We conduct a direct comparison of segmentation performance by counting voxels between the proposed surface-based framework and the existing voxel-based method, in which our framework achieves a much higher dice similarity coefficient score (72%) than the prior approach (46%).

Integrated Sensing and Communication with Multi-Domain Cooperation

With the continuous increase of the spectrum and antennas, endogenous sensing is now possible in the fifth generation and future wireless communication systems. However, sensing is a highly complex task for a heterogeneous communication network with massive connections. Seeking multi-domain cooperation is necessary. In this article, we present an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system that performs active, passive, and interactive sensing in different stages of communication through hardware and software. We also propose different methods about how multi-user and multi-frequency band cooperate to further enhance the ISAC system's performance. Finally, we elaborate on the advantages of multi-domain cooperation from the physical layer to the network layer for the ISAC system.

Sketch-based Normal Map Generation with Geometric Sampling

Normal map is an important and efficient way to represent complex 3D models. A designer may benefit from the auto-generation of high quality and accurate normal maps from freehand sketches in 3D content creation. This paper proposes a deep generative model for generating normal maps from users sketch with geometric sampling. Our generative model is based on Conditional Generative Adversarial Network with the curvature-sensitive points sampling of conditional masks. This sampling process can help eliminate the ambiguity of generation results as network input. In addition, we adopted a U-Net structure discriminator to help the generator be better trained. It is verified that the proposed framework can generate more accurate normal maps.

Brain Surface Reconstruction from MRI Images Based on Segmentation Networks Applying Signed Distance Maps

Whole-brain surface extraction is an essential topic in medical imaging systems as it provides neurosurgeons with a broader view of surgical planning and abnormality detection. To solve the problem confronted in current deep learning skull stripping methods lacking prior shape information, we propose a new network architecture that incorporates knowledge of signed distance fields and introduce an additional Laplacian loss to ensure that the prediction results retain shape information. We validated our newly proposed method by conducting experiments on our brain magnetic resonance imaging dataset (111 patients). The evaluation results demonstrate that our approach achieves comparable dice scores and also reduces the Hausdorff distance and average symmetric surface distance, thus producing more stable and smooth brain isosurfaces.

Sparse Array of Sub-surface Aided Anti-blockage mmWave Communication Systems

Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have drawn intensive attention to enhance the coverage of millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems. However, existing works mainly consider the RIS as a whole uniform plane, which may be unrealistic to be installed on the facade of buildings when the RIS is extreme large. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a sparse array of sub-surface (SAoS) architecture for RIS, which contains several rectangle shaped sub-surfaces termed as RIS tiles that can be sparsely deployed. An approximated ergodic spectral efficiency of the SAoS aided system is derived and the performance impact of the SAoS design is evaluated. Based on the approximated ergodic spectral efficiency, we obtain an optimal reflection coefficient design for each RIS tile. Analytical results show that the received signal-to-noise ratios can grow quadratically and linearly to the number of RIS elements under strong and weak LoS scenarios, respectively. Furthermore, we consider the visible region (VR) phenomenon in the SAoS aided mmWave system and find that the optimal distance between RIS tiles is supposed to yield a total SAoS VR nearly covering the whole blind coverage area. The numerical results verify the tightness of the approximated ergodic spectral efficiency and demonstrate the great system performance.

Explainable Tensorized Neural Ordinary Differential Equations forArbitrary-step Time Series Prediction

We propose a continuous neural network architecture, termed Explainable Tensorized Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (ETN-ODE), for multi-step time series prediction at arbitrary time points. Unlike the existing approaches, which mainly handle univariate time series for multi-step prediction or multivariate time series for single-step prediction, ETN-ODE could model multivariate time series for arbitrary-step prediction. In addition, it enjoys a tandem attention, w.r.t. temporal attention and variable attention, being able to provide explainable insights into the data. Specifically, ETN-ODE combines an explainable Tensorized Gated Recurrent Unit (Tensorized GRU or TGRU) with Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE). The derivative of the latent states is parameterized with a neural network. This continuous-time ODE network enables a multi-step prediction at arbitrary time points. We quantitatively and qualitatively demonstrate the effectiveness and the interpretability of ETN-ODE on five different multi-step prediction tasks and one arbitrary-step prediction task. Extensive experiments show that ETN-ODE can lead to accurate predictions at arbitrary time points while attaining best performance against the baseline methods in standard multi-step time series prediction.

On the Uplink Transmission of Multi-user Extra-large Scale Massive MIMO Systems

With the inherent benefits, such as, better cell coverage and higher area throughput, extra-large scale massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has great potential to be one of the key technologies for the next generation wireless communication systems. However, in practice, when the antenna dimensions grow large, spatial non-stationarities occur and users will only see a portion of the base station antenna array, which we call visibility region (VR). To assess the impact of spatial non-stationarities, in this paper, we investigate the uplink transmission of extra-large scale massive MIMO systems by considering VRs. In particular, we first propose a subarray-based system architecture for extra-large scale massive MIMO systems. Then, tight closed-form uplink spectral efficiency (SE) approximations with linear receivers are derived. With the objective of maximizing the achievable SE, we also propose schemes for the subarray phase coefficient design. In addition, based on the obtained ergodic achievable SE approximations, two statistical channel state information (CSI)-based greedy user scheduling algorithms are developed. Our results indicate that the statistical CSI-based greedy joint user and subarray scheduling algorithm collaborating with the on-off switch-based subarray architecture is a promising practical solution for extra-large scale massive MIMO systems.

Towards Dynamic Urban Bike Usage Prediction for Station Network Reconfiguration

Bike sharing has become one of the major choices of transportation for residents in metropolitan cities worldwide. A station-based bike sharing system is usually operated in the way that a user picks up a bike from one station, and drops it off at another. Bike stations are, however, not static, as the bike stations are often reconfigured to accommodate changing demands or city urbanization over time. One of the key operations is to evaluate candidate locations and install new stations to expand the bike sharing station network. Conventional practices have been studied to predict existing station usage, while evaluating new stations is highly challenging due to the lack of the historical bike usage. To fill this gap, in this work we propose a novel and efficient bike station-level prediction algorithm called AtCoR, which can predict the bike usage at both existing and new stations (candidate locations during reconfiguration). In order to address the lack of historical data issues, virtual historical usage of new stations is generated according to their correlations with the surrounding existing stations, for AtCoR model initialization. We have designed novel station-centered heatmaps which characterize for each target station centered at the heatmap the trend that riders travel between it and the station's neighboring regions, enabling the model to capture the learnable features of the bike station network. The captured features are further applied to the prediction of bike usage for new stations. Our extensive experiment study on more than 23 million trips from three major bike sharing systems in US, including New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles, shows that AtCoR outperforms baselines and state-of-art models in prediction of both existing and future stations.

Improved Preterm Prediction Based on Optimized Synthetic Sampling of EHG Signal

Preterm labor is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality and has attracted research efforts from many scientific areas. The inter-relationship between uterine contraction and the underlying electrical activities makes uterine electrohysterogram (EHG) a promising direction for preterm detection and prediction. Due the scarcity of EHG signals, especially those of preterm patients, synthetic algorithms are applied to create artificial samples of preterm type in order to remove prediction bias towards term, at the expense of a reduction of the feature effectiveness in machine-learning based automatic preterm detecting. To address such problem, we quantify the effect of synthetic samples (balance coefficient) on features' effectiveness, and form a general performance metric by utilizing multiple feature scores with relevant weights that describe their contributions to class separation. Combined with the activation/inactivation functions that characterizes the effect of the abundance of training samples in term and preterm prediction precision, we obtain an optimal sample balance coefficient that compromise the effect of synthetic samples in removing bias towards the majority and the side-effect of reducing features' importance. Substantial improvement in prediction precision has been achieved through a set of numerical tests on public available TPEHG database, and it verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Underwater image enhancement with Image Colorfulness Measure

Due to the absorption and scattering effects of the water, underwater images tend to suffer from many severe problems, such as low contrast, grayed out colors and blurring content. To improve the visual quality of underwater images, we proposed a novel enhancement model, which is a trainable end-to-end neural model. Two parts constitute the overall model. The first one is a non-parameter layer for the preliminary color correction, then the second part is consisted of parametric layers for a self-adaptive refinement, namely the channel-wise linear shift. For better details, contrast and colorfulness, this enhancement network is jointly optimized by the pixel-level and characteristiclevel training criteria. Through extensive experiments on natural underwater scenes, we show that the proposed method can get high quality enhancement results.

MIMO Detection for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Assisted Millimeter Wave Systems

Millimeter wave (mmWave) band, or high frequencies such as THz, has large undeveloped band of spectrum. However, wireless channels over the mmWave band usually have one or two paths only due to the severe attenuation. The channel property restricts its development in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, which can improve throughput by increasing the spectral efficiency. Recent development in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) provides new opportunities to mmWave communications. In this study, we propose a mmWave system, which used low-precision analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), with the aid of several RIS arrays. Moreover, each RIS array has many reflectors with discrete phase shift. By employing the linear spatial processing, these arrays form a synthetic channel with increased spatial diversity and power gain, which can support MIMO transmission. We develop a MIMO detector according to the characteristics of the synthetic channel. RIS arrays can provide spatial diversity to support MIMO transmission, however, different number, antenna configuration, and deployment of RIS arrays affect the bit error rate (BER) performance. We present state evolution (SE) equations to evaluate the BER of the proposed MIMO detector in the different cases. The BER performance of indoor system is studied extensively through leveraging by the SE equations. We reveal numerous insights about the RIS effects and discuss the appropriate system settings. In addition, our results demonstrate that the low-cost hardware, such as the 3-bit ADCs of the receiver side and the 2-bit uniform discrete phase shift of the RIS arrays, only moderately degenerate the system performance.

Software-Defined Network for End-to-end Networked Science at the Exascale

Domain science applications and workflow processes are currently forced to view the network as an opaque infrastructure into which they inject data and hope that it emerges at the destination with an acceptable Quality of Experience. There is little ability for applications to interact with the network to exchange information, negotiate performance parameters, discover expected performance metrics, or receive status/troubleshooting information in real time. The work presented here is motivated by a vision for a new smart network and smart application ecosystem that will provide a more deterministic and interactive environment for domain science workflows. The Software-Defined Network for End-to-end Networked Science at Exascale (SENSE) system includes a model-based architecture, implementation, and deployment which enables automated end-to-end network service instantiation across administrative domains. An intent based interface allows applications to express their high-level service requirements, an intelligent orchestrator and resource control systems allow for custom tailoring of scalability and real-time responsiveness based on individual application and infrastructure operator requirements. This allows the science applications to manage the network as a first-class schedulable resource as is the current practice for instruments, compute, and storage systems. Deployment and experiments on production networks and testbeds have validated SENSE functions and performance. Emulation based testing verified the scalability needed to support research and education infrastructures. Key contributions of this work include an architecture definition, reference implementation, and deployment. This provides the basis for further innovation of smart network services to accelerate scientific discovery in the era of big data, cloud computing, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

IntrA: 3D Intracranial Aneurysm Dataset for Deep Learning

Medicine is an important application area for deep learning models. Research in this field is a combination of medical expertise and data science knowledge. In this paper, instead of 2D medical images, we introduce an open-access 3D intracranial aneurysm dataset, IntrA, that makes the application of points-based and mesh-based classification and segmentation models available. Our dataset can be used to diagnose intracranial aneurysms and to extract the neck for a clipping operation in medicine and other areas of deep learning, such as normal estimation and surface reconstruction. We provide a large-scale benchmark of classification and part segmentation by testing state-of-the-art networks. We also discuss the performance of each method and demonstrate the challenges of our dataset. The published dataset can be accessed here: https://github.com/intra3d2019/IntrA.

G2MF-WA: Geometric Multi-Model Fitting with Weakly Annotated Data

In this paper we attempt to address the problem of geometric multi-model fitting with resorting to a few weakly annotated (WA) data points, which has been sparsely studied so far. In weak annotating, most of the manual annotations are supposed to be correct yet inevitably mixed with incorrect ones. The WA data can be naturally obtained in an interactive way for specific tasks, for example, in the case of homography estimation, one can easily annotate points on the same plane/object with a single label by observing the image. Motivated by this, we propose a novel method to make full use of the WA data to boost the multi-model fitting performance. Specifically, a graph for model proposal sampling is first constructed using the WA data, given the prior that the WA data annotated with the same weak label has a high probability of being assigned to the same model. By incorporating this prior knowledge into the calculation of edge probabilities, vertices (i.e., data points) lie on/near the latent model are likely to connect together and further form a subset/cluster for effective proposals generation. With the proposals generated, the $α$-expansion is adopted for labeling, and our method in return updates the proposals. This works in an iterative way. Extensive experiments validate our method and show that the proposed method produces noticeably better results than state-of-the-art techniques in most cases.
