Quantum State of the Asymptotic Gravity Field from BRST Quantization

We derive the quantum state of the asymptotic linearized gravity field of a compact energy source, using BRST quantization. Barnich has previously derived the quantum state of the U(1) field in QED using the Gauss law constraint. The role of Gauss's law is now played by the linearized Hamiltonian and momentum constraints in gravity. For a static mass source, only the scalar Hamiltonian constraint is shifted. The quantum state corresponding to the static Newton field originates in the non-radiative scalar constraint sector, not in the propagating transverse-traceless graviton sector. We discuss implications for holography and for black hole information: 1. the exact quantum state of the compact source is encoded in the asymptotic quantum state of its gravity field 2. Hawking amplitudes are dependent, via the gravity state outside the horizon, on the black hole internal state.

Leading order effective operators in quantum gravity

We explore the nature of higher dimensional operators generated by quantum gravity. Calculating the tree-level and one-loop effective operators generated by graviton exchange between fields of the standard model and those of a hidden sector, we show that the leading order operators generated by quantum gravity are non-local dimension 6 operators. Dimension 5 operators are not generated by perturbative (weak field) effects, although they might be generated by strong field effects such as Planck-scale fluctuations in spacetime. We investigate the consequences of our findings for models of ultralight scalar dark matter.

On Modelling the Surfaces of Celestial Bodies in Quantum Gravity

We discuss how to model the surface of celestial bodies (such as stars) in quantum gravity to ensure the regularity of quantum corrections to classical solutions of general relativity at the surface of such bodies. Specifically, we use the Vilkovisky--DeWitt unique effective action to calculate universal quantum corrections to the exterior metric for a class of stellar models. Previous descriptions, obtained via a Heaviside density profile, are ``pathological'' at the surface of the star due to the divergence of the metric functions and associated curvature invariants. Introducing a modified version of the Tolman VII density profile, we determine the minimal degree of differentiability required for this function to generate regular quantum corrections at the star's surface.

Black Hole Solutions in Quantum Gravity with Vilkovisky-DeWitt Effective Action

We study new black hole solutions in quantum gravity. We use the Vilkovisky-DeWitt unique effective action to obtain quantum gravitational corrections to Einstein's equations. In full analogy to previous work done for quadratic gravity, we find new black hole like solutions. We show that these new solutions exist close to the horizon and in the far-field limit.

The Weak Gravity Conjecture in the Vilkovisky-DeWitt Effective Action of Quantum Gravity

The Weak Gravity Conjecture states that in any consistent theory of quantum gravity in the landscape of string theory, the repulsive force mediated by a U(1) gauge field must be stronger than the attractive force of gravity. In this work, we calculate quantum gravitational corrections to the charge-to-mass ratio of extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes, using the Vilkovisky-deWitt unique effective action approach, since this ratio provides a discriminant to select low-energy effective theories of quantum gravity that fulfill the conjecture. We find that depending on the values of the Wilson coefficients of the effective action, some UV complete theories will fulfill the conjecture, while others will not.

Black Hole Information, Replica Wormholes, and Macroscopic Entanglement

In this invited review, we discuss the evaporation of a black hole, with emphasis on the resulting macroscopically distinct patterns of Hawking radiation. The density matrix of this radiation can approach a pure final state in the form of a highly entangled macroscopic superposition state. We note that this exact property is exhibited in replica wormhole calculations, and also in quantum hair effects on Hawking radiation amplitudes. Finally, we revisit the information paradox (Mathur's theorem and firewalls), showing that it can be resolved by macroscopic entanglement.

Matching the Vilkovisky-DeWitt Effective Action of Quantum Gravity to String Theory

In this work, we discuss the matching of the Vilkovisky-DeWitt effective action of quantum gravity to an example of an ultra-violet complete theory of quantum gravity. We show how this matching enables a calculation of the local Wilson coefficients of the effective action. We provide several examples in string theory. Moreover, we discuss the matching conditions within the context of the swampland program.

Quantum Gravitational Corrections in Cosmology

We show how to reliably calculate quantum gravitational corrections to cosmological models using the unique effective action formalism for quantum gravity. Our calculations are model independent and apply to any ultra-violet complete theory of quantum gravity that admit general relativity as a low energy theory. We show that it is important to consider the full effective action to obtain renormalization group invariant solutions. We investigate the validity range of our techniques within simple cosmological models.

Replica Wormholes and Quantum Hair

We discuss recent applications of Euclidean path integrals to the black hole information problem. In calculations with replica wormholes as the next-to-leading order correction to the Gibbons-Hawking saddlepoint, the radiation density matrix approaches a pure state at late times, following the Page curve. We compare unitary evaporation of black holes (in real time), mediated by calculable quantum hair effects, with the replica wormhole results. Both replica wormhole and quantum hair approaches imply that radiation states are macroscopic superpositions of spacetime backgrounds, invalidating firewall and monogamy of entanglement constructions. Importantly, identification of modes inside the horizon with radiation modes (i.e., large scale nonlocality across the horizon) is not required to provide a physical picture of unitary evaporation. Radiation modes can encode the interior information while still remaining independent degrees of freedom.

Probing Grand Unification with Quantum Sensors

We discuss how grand unification can be probed with experiments at low energies using quantum sensors. Specifically, we show that scalar multiplets coupled to the gauge sector of a grand unified theory provide a mechanism for a time-varying unified coupling which has low-energy consequences which can be probed with quantum sensors. We then assume that the multiplets represent ultra light dark matter. Constraints on ultra light dark matter couplings to regular matter are extracted using atomic clock comparisons, pulsar timing arrays (NANOGrav) and MICROSCOPE.

Quantum Hair During Gravitational Collapse

We consider quantum gravitational corrections to the Oppenheimer-Snyder metric describing time-dependent dust ball collapse. The interior metric also describes Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmology and our results are interpreted in that context. The exterior corrections are an example of quantum hair, and are shown to persist throughout the collapse. Our results show the quantum hair survives throughout the horizon formation and that the internal state of the resulting black hole is accessible to outside observers.

Quantum Gravitational Corrections to Particle Creation by Black Holes

We calculate quantum gravitational corrections to the amplitude for the emission of a Hawking particle by a black hole. We show explicitly how the amplitudes depend on quantum corrections to the exterior metric (quantum hair). This reveals the mechanism by which information escapes the black hole. The quantum state of the black hole is reflected in the quantum state of the exterior metric, which in turn influences the emission of Hawking quanta.

Analysis of atomic-clock data to constrain variations of fundamental constants

We present a new framework to study the time variation of fundamental constants in a model-independent way. Model independence implies more free parameters than assumed in previous studies. Using data from atomic clocks based on $^{87}$Sr, $^{171}$Yb$^+$ and $^{133}$Cs, we set bounds on parameters controlling the variation of the fine-structure constant, $\alpha$, and the electron-to-proton mass ratio, $\mu$. We consider variations on timescales ranging from a minute to almost a day. In addition, we use our results to derive some of the tightest limits to date on the parameter space of models of ultralight dark matter and axion-like particles.

Quantum Hair in Electrodynamics and Gravity

We demonstrate the existence of quantum hair in electrodynamics and gravity using effective action techniques. In the case of electrodynamics we use the Euler-Heisenberg effective action while in the case of quantum gravity we use the unique effective action. We give a general formulation of these effects which applies to both theories and discuss analogies and differences between them. Furthermore, we present a QED analog to black hole evaporation. Spontaneous pair production in the external field of a ball of charge is analogous to Hawking radiation from black holes. Assuming spherical symmetry, the Gauss law prevents the external field from depending on the density profile of the ball. Quantum corrections violate these expectations, showing that quantum radiation can encode classically forbidden information about the source.

Quantum Hair from Gravity

We explore the relationship between the quantum state of a compact matter source and of its asymptotic graviton field. For a matter source in an energy eigenstate, the graviton state is determined at leading order by the energy eigenvalue. Insofar as there are no accidental energy degeneracies there is a one to one map between graviton states on the boundary of spacetime and the matter source states. A typical semiclassical matter source results in an entangled asymptotic graviton state. We exhibit a purely quantum gravitational effect which causes the subleading asymptotic behavior of the graviton state to depend on the internal structure of the source. These observations establish the existence of ubiquitous quantum hair due to gravitational effects.

A Brief History of Hawking's Information Paradox

In this invited review, we describe Hawking's information paradox and a recently proposed resolution of it. Explicit calculations demonstrate the existence of quantum hair on black holes, meaning that the quantum state of the external graviton field depends on the internal state of the black hole. Simple quantum mechanics then implies that Hawking radiation amplitudes depend on the internal state, resulting in a pure final radiation state that preserves unitarity and, importantly, violates a factorization assumption which is central to the original paradox. Black hole information is encoded in entangled macroscopic superposition states of the radiation.

Quantum Hair and Black Hole Information

It has been shown that the quantum state of the graviton field outside a black hole horizon carries information about the internal state of the hole. We explain how this allows unitary evaporation: the final radiation state is a complex superposition which depends linearly on the initial black hole state. Under time reversal, the radiation state evolves back to the original black hole quantum state. Formulations of the information paradox on a fixed semiclassical geometry describe only a small subset of the evaporation Hilbert space, and do not exclude overall unitarity.

Black Holes in Quantum Gravity

We review some recent results obtained for black holes using effective field theory methods applied to quantum gravity, in particular the unique effective action. Black holes are complex thermodynamical objects that not only have a temperature but also have a pressure. Furthermore, they have quantum hair which provides a solution to the black hole information paradox.
