Random Features for High-Dimensional Nonlocal Mean-Field Games

We propose an efficient solution approach for high-dimensional nonlocal mean-field game (MFG) systems based on the Monte Carlo approximation of interaction kernels via random features. We avoid costly space-discretizations of interaction terms in the state-space by passing to the feature-space. This approach allows for a seamless mean-field extension of virtually any single-agent trajectory optimization algorithm. Here, we extend the direct transcription approach in optimal control to the mean-field setting. We demonstrate the efficiency of our method by solving MFG problems in high-dimensional spaces which were previously out of reach for conventional non-deep-learning techniques.

Computational Mean-field information dynamics associated with Reaction diffusion equations

We formulate and compute a class of mean-field information dynamics for reaction-diffusion equations. Given a class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations and entropy type Lyapunov functionals, we study their gradient flows formulations with generalized optimal transport metrics and mean-field control problems. We apply the primal-dual hybrid gradient algorithm to compute the mean-field control problems with potential energies. A byproduct of the proposed method contains a new and efficient variational scheme for solving implicit in time schemes of mean-field control problems. Several numerical examples demonstrate the solutions of mean-field control problems.

Twisted van der Waals Josephson junction based on high-Tc superconductor

Stacking two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials rotated with respect to each other show versatility for the study of exotic quantum phenomena. Especially, anisotropic layered materials have great potential for such twistronics applications, providing high tunability. Here, we report anisotropic superconducting order parameters in twisted Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) vdW junctions with an atomically clean vdW interface, achieved using the microcleave-and-stack technique. The vdW Josephson junctions with twist angles of 0° and 90° showed the maximum Josephson coupling, which was comparable to that of intrinsic Josephson (IJ) junctions in the bulk crystal. As the twist angle approaches 45°, Josephson coupling is suppressed, and eventually disappears at 45°. The observed twist angle dependence of the Josephson coupling can be explained quantitatively by theoretical calculation with the d-wave superconducting order parameter of Bi-2212 and finite tunneling incoherence of the junction. Our results revealed the anisotropic nature of Bi-2212 and provided a novel fabrication technique for vdW-based twistronics platforms compatible with air-sensitive vdW materials.

Many-Body Quadrupolar Sum Rule for Higher-Order Topological Insulator

The modern theory of polarization establishes the bulk-boundary correspondence for the bulk polarization. In this paper, we attempt to extend it to a sum rule of the bulk quadrupole moment by employing a many-body operator introduced in [Phys. Rev. B 100, 245134 (2019)] and [Phys. Rev. B 100, 245135 (2019)]. The sum rule that we propose consists of the alternating sum of four observables, which are the phase factors of the many-body operator in different boundary conditions. We demonstrate its validity through extensive numerical computations for various non-interacting tight-binding models. We also observe that individual terms in the sum rule correspond to the bulk quadrupole moment, the edge-localized polarizations, and the corner charge in the thermodynamic limit on some models.

Tropical Optimal Transport and Wasserstein Distances

We study the problem of optimal transport in tropical geometry and define the Wasserstein-$p$ distances in the continuous metric measure space setting of the tropical projective torus. We specify the tropical metric -- a combinatorial metric that has been used to study of the tropical geometric space of phylogenetic trees -- as the ground metric and study the cases of $p=1,2$ in detail. The case of $p=1$ gives an efficient computation of the infinitely-many geodesics on the tropical projective torus, while the case of $p=2$ gives a form for Fréchet means and a general inner product structure. Our results also provide theoretical foundations for geometric insight a statistical framework in a tropical geometric setting. We construct explicit algorithms for the computation of the tropical Wasserstein-1 and 2 distances and prove their convergence. Our results provide the first study of the Wasserstein distances and optimal transport in tropical geometry. Several numerical examples are provided.

Steady Floquet-Andreev States Probed by Tunnelling Spectroscopy

Engineering quantum states through light-matter interaction has created a new paradigm in condensed matter physics. A representative example is the Floquet-Bloch state, which is generated by time-periodically driving the Bloch wavefunctions in crystals. Previous attempts to realise such states in condensed matter systems have been limited by the transient nature of the Floquet states produced by optical pulses, which masks the universal properties of non-equilibrium physics. Here, we report the generation of steady Floquet Andreev (F-A) states in graphene Josephson junctions by continuous microwave application and direct measurement of their spectra by superconducting tunnelling spectroscopy. We present quantitative analysis of the spectral characteristics of the F-A states while varying the phase difference of superconductors, temperature, microwave frequency and power. The oscillations of the F-A state spectrum with phase difference agreed with our theoretical calculations. Moreover, we confirmed the steady nature of the F-A states by establishing a sum rule of tunnelling conductance, and analysed the spectral density of Floquet states depending on Floquet interaction strength. This study provides a basis for understanding and engineering non-equilibrium quantum states in nano-devices.

The back-and-forth method for Wasserstein gradient flows

We present a method to efficiently compute Wasserstein gradient flows. Our approach is based on a generalization of the back-and-forth method (BFM) introduced by Jacobs and Léger to solve optimal transport problems. We evolve the gradient flow by solving the dual problem to the JKO scheme. In general, the dual problem is much better behaved than the primal problem. This allows us to efficiently run large-scale simulations for a large class of internal energies including singular and non-convex energies.

Controlling Propagation of epidemics via mean-field control

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is changing and impacting lives on a global scale. In this paper, we introduce a mean-field game model in controlling the propagation of epidemics on a spatial domain. The control variable, the spatial velocity, is first introduced for the classical disease models, such as the SIR model. For this proposed model, we provide fast numerical algorithms based on proximal primal-dual methods. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed model illustrates how to separate infected patients in a spatial domain effectively.

Anisotropic Behavior of Excitons in Single Crystal α-SnS

We investigate analytically the anisotropic dielectric properties of single crystal α-SnS near the fundamental absorption edge by considering atomic orbitals. Most striking is the excitonic feature in the armchair- (b-) axis direction, which is particularly prominent at low temperatures. To determine the origin of this anisotropy, we perform first-principles calculations using the GW0 Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) including the electron-hole interaction. The results show that the anisotropic dielectric characteristics are a direct result of the natural anisotropy of p orbitals. In particular, this dominant excitonic feature originates from the py orbital at the saddle point in the Γ-Y region.

Many-Body Invariants for Chern and Chiral Hinge Insulators

We construct new many-body invariants for 2d Chern and 3d chiral hinge insulators, which are characterized by quantized pumping of dipole and quadrupole moments. The invariants that we devise are written entirely in terms of many-body ground state wavefunctions on a torus geometry with a set of unitary operators. We provide a number of supporting evidences for our invariants via topological field theory interpretation, adiabatic pumping argument, and direct mapping to free-fermion band indices. We finally confirm our invariants by numerical computations including infinite density matrix renormalization group on a quasi-one-dimensional system. The many-body invariants therefore explicitly encircle several different pillars of theoretical descriptions of topological phases.

Generalized Unnormalized Optimal Transport and its fast algorithms

We introduce fast algorithms for generalized unnormalized optimal transport. To handle densities with different total mass, we consider a dynamic model, which mixes the $L^p$ optimal transport with $L^p$ distance. For $p=1$, we derive the corresponding $L^1$ generalized unnormalized Kantorovich formula. We further show that the problem becomes a simple $L^1$ minimization which is solved efficiently by a primal-dual algorithm. For $p=2$, we derive the $L^2$ generalized unnormalized Kantorovich formula, a new unnormalized Monge problem and the corresponding Monge-Ampère equation. Furthermore, we introduce a new unconstrained optimization formulation of the problem. The associated gradient flow is essentially related to an elliptic equation which can be solved efficiently. Here the proposed gradient descent procedure together with the Nesterov acceleration involves the Hamilton-Jacobi equation which arises from the KKT conditions. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Evolution of magnetic Kubo number of stochastic magnetic fields during the edge pedestal collapse simulation

Using a statistical correlation analysis, we compute evolution of the magnetic Kubo number during an edge pedestal collapse in nonlinear reduced magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The Kubo number is found not to exceed the unity in spite of performing the simulation with a highly unstable initial pressure profile to the ideal ballooning mode. During the edge pedestal collapse, the Kubo number is within the values of $0.2$ and $0.6$ suggesting that the quasilinear diffusion model is sufficient to explain the energy loss mechanism during the pedestal collapse. Temporal evolution of poloidal correlation lengths of pressure fluctuations resembles with that of the Chirikov parameter and the Kubo number; while radial correlation lengths of the pressure fluctuations are strongly correlated with the radial width of the magnetic stochastic layer.
