Identities for Schur-type determinants and pfaffians

We give a simple formula for some determinants, and an analogous formula for pfaffians, both of which are polynomial identities. The second involve some expressions that interpolate between determinants and pfaffians. We give several tableau formulas for difference operators in Types A and C, as well as other operators that appear in the "enriched", or "back-stable" Schubert polynomials. There are also tableau formulas for the enriched Schubert polynomials for vexillary and $321$-avoiding permutations.

Schubert Polynomials in Types A and C

Enriched versions of type A Schubert polynomials are constructed with coefficients in a polynomial ring in variables $c_1, c_2, \ldots$. Specializing these variables to $0$ recovers the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Sch\"utzenberger; specializing them to certain power series recovers the back-stable double Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono; specializing them to Schur Q-polynomials relates them to the type C double Schubert polynomials of Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse. Many formulas for classical Schubert polynomials generalize to this setting. They give, and are characterized by, formulas for degeneracy loci.

Vexillary signed permutations revisited

We study the combinatorial properties of vexillary signed permutations, which are signed analogues of the vexillary permutations first considered by Lascoux and Sch\"utzenberger. We give several equivalent characterizations of vexillary signed permutations, including descriptions in terms of essential sets and pattern avoidance, and we relate them to the vexillary elements introduced by Billey and Lam.

Chern class formulas for classical-type degeneracy loci

In previous work, we employed a geometric method of Kazarian to prove Pfaffian formulas for a certain class of degeneracy loci in types B, C, and D. Here we refine that approach to obtain formulas for more general loci, including those coming from all isotropic Grassmannians. In these cases, the formulas recover the remarkable theta- and eta-polynomials of Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis, and Wilson. The streamlined geometric approch yields simple and direct proofs, which proceed in parallel for all four classical types. In an appendix, we develop some foundational algebra and prove several Pfaffian identities. Another appendix establishes a basic formula for classes in quadric bundles.

Degeneracy Loci, Pfaffians, and Vexillary Signed Permutations in Types B, C, and D

We define a notion of vexillary signed permutation in types B, C, and D, corresponding to natural degeneracy loci for vector bundles with symmetries of those types. We show that the classes of these loci are given by explicit Pfaffian formulas. The Grassmannian formulas of Kazarian are important special cases, and the corresponding double Schubert polynomials of Ikeda, Mihalcea, and Naruse are shown to be equal to these Pfaffians.

The Picard group of $M_{1,1}$

We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of elliptic curves and its canonical compactification over general base schemes.

Eigenvalues, singular values, and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients

We characterize the relationship between the singular values of a complex Hermitian (resp., real symmetric, complex symmetric) matrix and the singular values of its off-diagonal block. We also characterize the eigenvalues of an Hermitian (or real symmetric) matrix C=A+B in terms of the combined list of eigenvalues of A and B. The answers are given by Horn-type linear inequalities. The proofs depend on a new inequality among Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.

Eigenvalues of majorized Hermitian matrices and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients

Answering a question raised by S. Friedland, we show that the possible eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices (or compact operators) A, B, and C with C <= A + B are given by the same inequalities as in Klyachko's theorem for the case where C = A + B, except that the equality corresponding to tr(C) = tr(A) + tr(B) is replaced by the inequality corresponding to tr(C) <= tr(A) + tr(B). The possible types of finitely generated torsion modules A, B, and C over a discrete valuation ring such that there is an exact sequence B -> C -> A are characterized by the same inequalities.

Adjoints and Max Noether's Fundamentalsatz

We give an exposition of the theory of adjoints and conductors for curves on nonsingular surfaces, emphasizing the case of plane curves, for which the presentation is particularly elementary. This is closely related to Max Noether's ``AF+BG'' theorem, which is proved for curves with arbitrary multiple components.

Eigenvalues, invariant factors, highest weights, and Schubert calculus

We describe recent work of Klyachko, Totaro, Knutson, and Tao, that characterizes eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices, and decomposition of tensor products of representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$. We explain related applications to invariant factors of products of matrices, intersections in Grassmann varieties, and singular values of sums and products of arbitrary matrices.

Chern class formulas for quiver varieties

In this paper a formula is proved for the general degeneracy locus associated to an oriented quiver of type A_n. Given a finite sequence of vector bundles with maps between them, these loci are described by putting rank conditions on arbitrary composites of the maps. Our answer is a polynomial in Chern classes of the bundles involved, depending on the given rank conditions. It can be expressed as a linear combination of products of Schur polynomials in the differences of the bundles. The coefficients are interesting generalizations of Littlewood-Richardson numbers. These polynomials specialize to give new formulas for Schubert polynomials.

Universal Schubert polynomials

We introduce polynomials that represent general degeneracy loci for maps of vector bundles. These polynomials specialize to the known classical and quantum forms of single and double Schubert polynomials. This is the final version of the paper, to appear in Duke Math. J. The results are strengthened because Lakshmibai and Magyar have proved a conjecture from the previous version: in the universal case, these loci are Cohen-Macaulay.

Quantum multiplication of Schur polynomials

We give formulas for the products of classes of Schubert varieties in the quantum cohomology rings of Grassmannians, in terms of the combinatorics of partitions and tableaux.

Intersection Theory on Toric Varieties

The operational Chow cohomology classes of a complete toric variety are identified with certain functions, called Minkowski weights, on the corresponding fan. The natural product of Chow cohomology classes makes the Minkowski weights into a commutative ring; the product is computed by a displacement in the lattice, which corresponds to a deformation in the toric variety. We show that, with rational coefficients, this ring embeds in McMullen's polytope algebra, and that the polytope algebra is the direct limit of these Chow rings, over all compactifications of a given torus. In the nonsingular case, the Minkowski weight corresponding to the Todd class is related to a certain Ehrhart polynomial.
