Almost TQFTs via colored ribbon graphs

In this paper, we introduce ribbon TQFTs via Edge Contraction/Construction Axioms of colored ribbon graphs as an extension of the 2D TQFT axioms for ribbon graphs formulated in arXiv:1508.05922. We investigate nearly Frobenius structures and Almost TQFTs defined in arXiv:1907.05470 together with ribbon TQFTs. We give a classification result for ribbon TQFTs that extends the one obtained for Frobenius algebras in arXiv:1508.05922. In particular, the Edge Contraction/Construction Axioms of colored ribbon graphs in this work become equivalent to the functorial Axioms of TQFTs governed by the sewing principle of Atiyah and Segal discussed in arXiv:2510.03128 and arXiv:1907.05470. As an application, we obtain that the recursion of generalized Catalan numbers can be twisted by Almost TQFT for co-unital nearly Frobenius algebra.

On Nearly Frobenius Structures

Nearly Frobenius structures and 2-dimensional Almost TQFTs were introduced and shown to be in categorical equivalence in arXiv:1907.05470 in the attempt to extend the Atiyah-Segal's definition to the category of infinite dimensional vector spaces. In this paper, we investigate nearly Frobenius structures and we give a classification result for Almost TQFTs in dimension 2. In particular, the TQFTs functorial axioms become equivalent to the Edge Contraction/Construction axioms of colored ribbon graphs recently introduced by the authors.

Fast, low-loss all-optical phase modulation in warm rubidium vapour

Low-loss high-speed switches are an integral component of future photonic quantum technologies, with applications in state generation, multiplexing, and the implementation of quantum gates. Phase modulation is one method of achieving this switching, but existing optical phase modulators either achieve high bandwidth or low loss, but not both. We demonstrate fast ($100\,\mathrm{MHz}$ bandwidth), low-loss ($83\pm2\%$ transmission) phase shifting ($\Delta\phi = (0.90\pm0.05)\pi$) in a signal field, induced by a control field, and mediated by the two-photon $5S_{1/2} \rightarrow{} 5P_{3/2} \rightarrow{} 5D_{5/2}$ transition in $^{87}\text{Rb}$ vapour. We discuss routes to enhance both performance and scalability for application to a range of quantum and classical technologies.

Reconstruction of Stochastic Dynamics from Large Streamed Datasets

The complex dynamics of physical systems can often be modeled with stochastic differential equations. However, computational constraints inhibit the estimation of dynamics from large time-series datasets. I present a method for estimating drift and diffusion functions from inordinately large datasets through the use of incremental, online, updating statistics. I demonstrate the validity and utility of this method by analyzing three large, varied synthetic datasets, as well as an empirical turbulence dataset. This method will hopefully facilitate the analysis of complex systems from exceedingly large, "big data" scientific datasets, as well as real-time streamed data.
