Universal Ramanujan-type congruences for prime-detecting quasimodular forms

We establish the existence of infinitely many Ramanujan-type congruences which hold uniformly for the full $\Z$-module of prime detecting quasimodular forms. In particular, we prove that for every prime $p$, there is at least one arithmetic progression $An+B$ such that every prime-detecting quasimodular form has coefficients divisible by $p$ in this progression.

Remote, bivariate expert elicitation to determine the prior probability distribution for sample size calculation in a Bayesian non-inferiority multicenter randomized controlled trial (Croup Dosing Trial)

Prior distributions must be specified for the parameters of interest in a Bayesian clinical trial. When existing evidence on the effects of the trial interventions is limited, prior distributions can be constructed with expert elicitation. However, conventional elicitation requires face-to-face interactions and intensive pre-elicitation training, which can be infeasible. Our remote elicitation was based on established expert elicitation methods. We used bivariate prior distributions for dependencies between elicited quantities. We elicited a prior distribution for the Croup Dosing Trial, which will assess the number of return visits to the emergency department within 7 days in children with croup. This trial evaluates the non-inferiority of 0.15 mg/kg of dexamethasone, compared to the standard dose of 0.60 mg/kg to treat croup. We conducted three remote workshops to elicit expert beliefs on the efficacy of the two doses of dexamethasone. Each workshop consisted of two survey rounds, separated by a group discussion. Prior to the workshop, experts reviewed provided literature on the effects of the two doses of dexamethasone. Beliefs were aggregated with expert-specific bivariate distributions. The aggregated distribution and surveyed non-inferiority margin determined the sample size. Twelve emergency medicine physicians participated in our remote elicitation exercise. The elicitation generated a prior distribution centered at 6% for the 0.60 mg/kg dose and 8% for the 0.15 mg/kg dose. The aggregated prior distribution produced a sample size of 1850, based on a non-inferiority margin of 4%. We elicited a prior distribution that incorporated past evidence and expert opinion. The elicited prior is consistent with literature on the efficacy of the dexamethasone doses in treating croup. Our approach demonstrates the feasibility of remotely eliciting bivariate distributions for clinical trials.

New Types of Sturm bounds via $p$-adic transfer methods

Sturm's theorem states that a modular form with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}$ or $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ can only have an explicitly bounded order of vanishing at infinity. This result is one of the most powerful computational tools in the study of modular forms, and has widespread applications to congruences and other kinds of explicit calculations in mathematics and physics. In this paper, we formulate a new ``$p$-adic transfer method" that lifts Sturm-type bounds from one space to another using exclusively non-geometric inputs. As an application, we transfer the Sturm bounds for classical modular forms to the space of quasimodular forms of level one. These bounds are applicable uniformly for quasimodular forms with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}$ or $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$, which extends the non-uniform results for $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ only which can be derived from classical theories. We also discuss the potential for future applications to other quasi- and mixed-weight modular objects, and perhaps even entirely non-modular objects.

Overpartitions with parts separated by parity

In this paper, we generalize Andrews' partitions separated by parity to overpartitions in two ways. We investigate the generating functions for 16 overpartition families whose parts are separated by parity, and we prove various $q$-series identities for these functions. These identities include relations to modular forms, $q$-hypergeometric series, and mock modular forms.

Ramanujan's partition generating functions modulo $\ell$

For the partition function $p(n)$, Ramanujan proved the striking identities $$ P_5(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(5n+4)q^n =5\prod_{n\geq 1} \frac{\left(q^5;q^5\right)_{\infty}^5}{(q;q)_{\infty}^6}, $$ $$ P_7(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(7n+5)q^n =7\prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^3}{(q;q)_{\infty}^4}+49q \prod_{n\geq 1}\frac{\left(q^7;q^7\right)_{\infty}^7}{(q;q)_{\infty}^8}, $$ where $(q;q)_{\infty}:=\prod_{n\geq 1}(1-q^n).$ As these identities imply his celebrated congruences modulo 5 and 7, it is natural to seek, for primes $\ell \geq 5,$ closed form expressions of the power series $$ P_{\ell}(q):=\sum_{n\geq 0} p(\ell n-\delta_{\ell})q^n\pmod{\ell}, $$ where $\delta_{\ell}:=\frac{\ell^2-1}{24}.$ In this paper, we prove that $$ P_{\ell}(q)\equiv c_{\ell} \frac{T_{\ell}(q)}{ (q^\ell; q^\ell )_\infty} \pmod{\ell}, $$ where $c_{\ell}\in \mathbb{Z}$ is explicit and $T_{\ell}(q)$ is the generating function for the Hecke traces of $\ell$-ramified values of special Dirichlet series for weight $\ell-1$ cusp forms on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. This is a new proof of Ramanujan's congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11, as there are no nontrivial cusp forms of weight 4, 6, and 10.

Distribution of Alternating Sums of Parts in Partitions

Recently, many authors have investigated how various partition statistics distribute as the size of the partition grows. In this work, we look at a particular statistic arising from the recent rejuvenation of MacMahon's partition analysis. More specifically, we compute all the moments of the alternating sum statistic for partitions. We prove this results using the Circle Method. We also propose a general framework for studying further questions of this type that may avoid some of the complications that arise in traditional approaches to the distributions of partition statistics, and we comment on the utility, comparative ease and opportunities to generalize to very broad settings.

Precision Asymptotics for Partitions Featuring False-Indefinite Theta Functions

Andrews-Dyson-Hickerson, Cohen build a striking relation between q-hypergeometric series, real quadratic fields, and Maass forms. Thanks to the works of Lewis-Zagier and Zwegers we have a complete understanding on the part of these relations pertaining to Maass forms and false-indefinite theta functions. In particular, we can systematically distinguish and study the class of false-indefinite theta functions related to Maass forms. A crucial component here is the framework of mock Maass theta functions built by Zwegers in analogy with his earlier work on indefinite theta functions and their application to Ramanujan's mock theta functions. Given this understanding, a natural question is to what extent one can utilize modular properties to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the associated Fourier coefficients, especially in view of their relevance to combinatorial objects. In this paper, we develop the relevant methods to study such a question and show that quite detailed results can be obtained on the asymptotic development, which also enable Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher type exact formulas under the right conditions. We develop these techniques by concentrating on a concrete example involving partitions with parts separated by parity and derive an asymptotic expansion that includes all the exponentially growing terms.

Higher level $q$-multiple zeta values with applications to quasimodular forms and partitions

In recent years, the generalized sum-of-divisor functions of MacMahon have been unified into the algebraic framework of $q$-multiple zeta values. In particular, these results link partition theory, quasimodular forms, $q$-multiple zeta values, and quasi-shuffle algebras. In this paper, we complete this idea of unification for higher levels, demonstrating that any quasimodular form of weight $k \geq 2$ and level $N$ may be expressed in terms of the $q$-multiple zeta values of level $N$ studied algebraically by Yuan and Zhao. We also give results restricted to $q$-multiple zeta values with integer coefficients, and we construct completely additive generating sets for spaces of quasimodular forms and for quasimodular forms with integer coefficients. We also provide a variety of computational examples from number-theoretic perspectives that suggest many new applications of the algebraic structure of $q$-multiple zeta values to quasimodular forms and partitions.

Zeros of Hook Polynomials and Related Questions

We study the zero set of polynomials built from partition statistics, complementing earlier work in this direction by Boyer, Goh, Parry, and others. In particular, addressing a question of Males with two of the authors, we prove asymptotics for the values of $t$-hook polynomials away from an annulus and isolated zeros of a theta function. We also discuss some open problems and present data on other polynomial families, including those associated to deformations of Rogers-Ramanujan functions.

Distribution of hooks in self-conjugate partitions

We confirm the speculation that the distribution of $t$-hooks among unrestricted integer partitions essentially descends to self-conjugate partitions. Namely, we prove that the number of hooks of length $t$ among the size $n$ self-conjugate partitions is asymptotically normally distributed with mean $\mu_t(n) \sim \frac{\sqrt{6n}}{\pi} + \frac{3}{\pi^2} - \frac{t}{2}+\frac{\delta_t}{4}$ and variance $\sigma_t^2(n) \sim \frac{(\pi^2 - 6) \sqrt{6n}}{\pi^3},$ where $\delta_t:=1$ if $t$ is odd, and is 0 otherwise.

Integer partitions detect the primes

We show that integer partitions, the fundamental building blocks in additive number theory, detect prime numbers in an unexpected way. Answering a question of Schneider, we show that the primes are the solutions to special equations in partition functions. For example, an integer $n\geq 2$ is prime if and only if $$ (3n^3 - 13n^2 + 18n - 8)M_1(n) + (12n^2 - 120n + 212)M_2(n) -960M_3(n) = 0, $$ where the $M_a(n)$ are MacMahon's well-studied partition functions. More generally, for "MacMahonesque" partition functions $M_{\vec{a}}(n),$ we prove that there are infinitely many such prime detecting equations with constant coefficients, such as $$ 80M_{(1,1,1)}(n)-12M_{(2,0,1)}(n)+12M_{(2,1,0)}(n)+\dots-12M_{(1,3)}(n)-39M_{(3,1)}(n)=0. $$

On the asymptotic behavior for partitions separated by parity

The study of partitions with parts separated by parity was initiated by Andrews in connection with Ramanujan's mock theta functions, and his variations on this theme have produced generating functions with a large variety of different modular properties. In this paper, we use Ingham's Tauberian theorem to compute the asymptotic main term for each of the eight functions studied by Andrews.

Limiting behaviour and modular completions of MacMahon-like q-series

Recently, MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisor functions were shown to link partitions, quasimodular forms, and q-multiple zeta values. In this paper, we explore many further properties and extensions of these. Firstly, we address a question of Ono by producing infinite families of MacMahon-like functions that approximate the colored partition functions (and indeed other eta quotients). We further explore the MacMahon-like functions and discover new and suggestive arithmetic structure and modular completions.

Inequalities and asymptotics for hook numbers in restricted partitions

In this paper, we consider the asymptotic properties of hook numbers of partitions in restricted classes. More specifically, we compare the frequency with which partitions into odd parts and partitions into distinct parts have hook numbers equal to $h \geq 1$ by deriving an asymptotic formula for the total number of hooks equal to $h$ that appear among partitions into odd and distinct parts, respectively. We use these asymptotic formulas to prove a recent conjecture of the first author and collaborators that for $h \geq 2$ and $n \gg 0$, partitions into odd parts have, on average, more hooks equal to $h$ than do partitions into distinct parts. We also use our asymptotics to prove certain probabilistic statements about how hooks distribute in the rows of partitions.

Asymptotics for $d$-fold partition diamonds and related infinite products

We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $d$-fold partition diamonds of $n$ and their Schmidt-type counterparts. In order to do so, we study the asymptotic behavior of certain infinite products. We also remark on interesting potential connections with mathematical physics and Bloch groups.

On the distribution of the norm of partitions

The norm of an integer partition is defined as the product of its parts. This statistic was recently introduced by Schneider in connection to partition zeta functions. In this note, we use the method of moments to study the distribution of the norm under the uniform probability measure on partitions of $n$ as $n \to \infty$. We use singularity analysis to prove asymptotics for the moments and show as a result that the norm lacks a non-trivial limiting distribution on $[0,\infty)$.

The Riemann Hypothesis for period polynomials of cusp forms

We consider the period polynomials $r_f(z)$ associated with cusp forms $f$ of weight $k$ on all of $\mathrm{SL}_2\left( \mathbb{Z} \right)$, which are generating functions for the critical $L$-values of the modular $L$-function associated to $f$. In 2014, El-Guindy and Raji proved that if $f$ is an eigenform, then $r_f(z)$ satisfies a ``Riemann hypothesis" in the sense that all its zeros lie on the natural boundary of its functional equation. We show that this phenomenon is not restricted to eigenforms, and we provide large natural infinite families of cusp forms whose period polynomials almost always satisfy the Riemann hypothesis. For example, we show that for weights $k \geq 120$, linear combinations of eigenforms with positive coefficients always have unimodular period polynomials.

Hook length biases and general linear partition inequalities

Motivated in part by hook-content formulas for certain restricted partitions in representation theory, we consider the total number of hooks of fixed length in odd versus distinct partitions. We show that there are more hooks of length $2$, respectively $3$, in all odd partitions of $n$ than in all distinct partitions of $n$, and make the analogous conjecture for arbitrary hook length $t \geq 2$. We also establish additional bias results on the number of gaps of size $1,$ respectively $2$, in all odd versus distinct partitions of $n$. We conjecture similar biases and asymptotics, as well as congruences for the number of hooks of fixed length in odd distinct partitions versus self-conjugate partitions. An integral component of the proof of our bias result for hooks of length $3$ is a linear inequality involving $q(n)$, the number of distinct partitions of $n$. In this article we also establish effective linear inequalities for $q(n)$ in great generality, a result which is of independent interest. Our methods are both analytic and combinatorial, and our results and conjectures intersect the areas of representation theory, analytic number theory, partition theory, and $q$-series. In particular, we use a Rademacher-type exact formula for $q(n),$ Wright's circle method, modularity, $q$-series transformations, asymptotic methods, and combinatorial arguments.
