Functionals for Multilinear Fractional Embedding

A novel representation is developed as a measure for multilinear fractional embedding. Corresponding extensions are given for the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu theorem and Pitt's inequality. New results are obtained for diagonal trace restriction on submanifolds as an application of the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality. Smoothing estimates are used to provide new structural understanding for density functional theory, the Coulomb interaction energy and quantum mechanics of phase space. Intriguing connections are drawn that illustrate interplay among classical inequalities in Fourier analysis.

Multilinear Embedding and Hardy's Inequality

Multilinear trace restriction inequalities are obtained for Hardy's inequality. More generally, detailed development is given for new multilinear forms for Young's convolution inequality, and a new proof for the multilinear Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality, and its realization on hyperbolic space.

Embedding estimates and fractional smoothness

A short intrinsic proof is given for the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu theorem with an extension for higher-order gradient forms. This argument illustrates the role of functional geometry and Fourier analysis for obtaining embedding estimates. New Hausdorff-Young inequalities are obtained for fractional embedding as an extension of the classical Aronszajn-Smith formula. These results include bilinear fractional embedding as suggested by the Landau collision operator in plasma dynamics.

Multilinear Embedding -- convolution estimates on smooth submanifolds

Multilinear embedding estimates for the fractional Laplacian are obtained in terms of functionals defined over a hyperbolic surface. Convolution estimates used in the proof enlarge the classical framework of the convolution algebra for Riesz potentials to include the critical endpoint index, and provide new realizations for fractional integral inequalities that incorporate restriction to smooth submanifolds. Results developed here are modeled on the space-time estimate used by Klainerman and Machedon in their proof of uniqueness for the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy.

Convolution estimates and the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy

Extensions to higher-dimensions are given for a convolution estimate used by Klainerman and Machedon in their study of uniqueness of solutions for the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy. Such estimates determine more general forms of Stein-Weiss integrals involving restriction to smooth submanifolds.

Multilinear embedding estimates for the fractional Laplacian

Three novel multilinear embedding estimates for the fractional Laplacian are obtained in terms of trace integrals restricted to the diagonal. The resulting sharp inequalities may be viewed as extensions of the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality, the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and Pitt's inequality.

Pitt's inequality and the fractional Laplacian: sharp error estimates

Sharp error estimates in terms of the fractional Laplacian and a weighted Besov norm are obtained for Pitt's inequality by using the spectral representation with weights for the fractional Laplacian due to Frank, Lieb and Seiringer and the sharp Stein-Weiss inequality. Dilation invariance, group symmetry on a non-unimodular group and a nonlinear Stein-Weiss lemma are used to provide short proofs of the Frank-Seiringer "Hardy inequalities" where fractional smoothness is measured by a Besov norm.

On Hardy-Sobolev embedding

Linear interpolation inequalities that combine Hardy's inequality with sharp Sobolev embedding are obtained using classical arguments of Hardy and Littlewood (Bliss lemma). Such results are equivalent to Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities with sharp constants. A one-dimensional convolution inequality for the exponential density is derived as an application of these methods.

Weighted inequalities and Stein-Weiss potentials

Sharp extensions of Pitt's inequality and bounds for Stein-Weiss fractional integrals are obtained that incorporate gradient forms and vector-valued operators. Such results include Hardy-Rellich inequalities.

Pitt's inequality with sharp convolution estimates

Sharp $L^p$ extensions of Pitt's inequality expressed as a weighted Sobolev inequality are obtained using convolution estimates and Stein-Weiss potentials. More generally, optimal constants are obtained for the full Stein-Weiss potential as a map from $L^p$ to itself, and new proofs are given for the classical Pitt and Stein-Weiss estimates.

On the Grushin operator and hyperbolic symmetry

Complexity of geometric symmetry for differential operators with mixed homogeniety is examined here. Sharp Sobolev estimates are calculated for the Grushin operator in low dimensions using hyperbolic symmetry and conformal geometry.
