Allen--Cahn Residual-Constrained Topology Optimization via an Augmented Lagrangian Method

This paper presents a residual-constrained topology optimization framework that controls interface transition bandwidth without requiring external density filters. The steady conserved Allen--Cahn (AC) equation is formulated as an equality residual constraint and solved via a mass-weighted Augmented Lagrangian Method (ALM) coupled with the Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA). A closed-form chemical potential projection eliminates the constant residual mode, ensuring algebraic compatibility with external volume targets. Variational sensitivity analysis reveals a symmetric-plus-rank-one Jacobian that yields matrix-free sensitivities without additional adjoint PDE solves, reducing residual sensitivity overhead to only 0.11% of the state elasticity solve time in 3D. Systematic 2D benchmarks confirm that interface bandwidth is governed intrinsically by reaction--diffusion parameters across mesh refinements. While diffuse interfaces incur a continuous compliance elevation (1.4%--12.3%), a volume-preserving 0/1 post-processing audit across 48 benchmark cases demonstrates that this gap stems primarily from intermediate-density penalization: binarized AC-ALM designs achieve equal or superior stiffness in 45 configurations (averaging 1.2% stiffer than SIMP). Simultaneously, single-node hinges and strut fragmentation are substantially suppressed compared to unregularized baselines. Three-dimensional benchmarks further demonstrate practical spatial viability for complex structures.

Overlap-free multi-material topology optimization for minimum compliance in two and three dimensions by level-set-based negative-mapping interpolation

Gray elements and material overlaps at the interfaces limit density-based multi-material topology optimization. This article extends the level set-based negative-mapping interpolation to the multi-material proportional topology optimization of macro-scale structures in two and three dimensions. An alternating active-phase algorithm decomposes M-phase problems into two-phase sub-problems described by level set functions; an evolutionary strategy removes the need for sentitivity analysis; and the negative-mapping interpolation eliminates the overlaps of the phases in the interface elements. Cantilever and half-MBB beams in two dimensions and a cantilever beam in three dimensions, with three and four material phases, give smooth boundaries, no gray elements and overlap-free designs. The compliance lies below the SIMP value in four of the eight two-dimensional cases and 0.3%, 0.4%, 4.8% and 12.7% above it in the other four. The influence of the material properties, of the interface treatment and of the algorithmic parameters is also examined.

Element-dependent buckling loads of stiffened panels under cantilevered shear

The linearized buckling load of a stiffened panel depends on the stress stiffness its shell element assembles. We read it from exported operators against three truncations of one second variation. The classic pass of ANSYS SHELL181 carries a rotation-rotation block pairing the drilling freedom with the bending rotations and its perturbation pass does not; removing the block recovers the perturbation load factor to 0.02%. SHELL281 carries block and couplings in both passes. Abaqus S4 matches the critical mode of the complete second variation to 1.0000 on the translations and its load factor to 1.7%, against 17% and 34% for the other two forms. On an optimized panel under cantilevered shear a 20-node continuum lies 3% to 6% above that form, S4 and SHELL281, 11% and 23% below both SHELL181 passes and 25% above Abaqus S8R, at the finest meshes. On a conventionally stiffened panel the SHELL181 passes stand 1.0% and 3.5% above the complete form, 9% and 21% at half the rib pitch; under a shear flow, on cylinders, open beams and under axial compression the three forms coincide and no pass parts by more than 0.3%.

Hybrid evolutionary algorithm with extreme machine learning fitness function evaluation for two-stage capacitated facility location problem

This paper considers the two-stage capacitated facility location problem (TSCFLP) in which products manufactured in plants are delivered to customers via storage depots. Customer demands are satisfied subject to limited plant production and limited depot storage capacity. The objective is to determine the locations of plants and depots in order to minimize the total cost including the fixed cost and transportation cost. A hybrid evolutionary algorithm (HEA) with genetic operations and local search is proposed. To avoid the expensive calculation of fitness of population in terms of computational time, the HEA uses extreme machine learning to approximate the fitness of most of the individuals. Moreover, two heuristics based on the characteristic of the problem is incorporated to generate a good initial population. Computational experiments are performed on two sets of test instances from the recent literature. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated and analyzed. Compared with the state-of-the-art genetic algorithm, the proposed algorithm can find the optimal or near-optimal solutions in a reasonable computational time.

Scheduling step-deteriorating jobs to minimize the total weighted tardiness on a single machine

This paper addresses the scheduling problem of minimizing the total weighted tardiness on a single machine with step-deteriorating jobs. With the assumption of deterioration, the job processing times are modeled by step functions of job starting times and pre-specified job deteriorating dates. The introduction of step-deteriorating jobs makes a single machine total weighted tardiness problem more intractable. The computational complexity of this problem under consideration was not determined. In this study, it is firstly proved to be strongly NP-hard. Then a mixed integer programming model is derived for solving the problem instances optimally. In order to tackle large-sized problems, seven dispatching heuristic procedures are developed for near-optimal solutions. Meanwhile, the solutions delivered by the proposed heuristic are further improved by a pair-wise swap movement. Computational results are presented to reveal the performance of all proposed approaches.

Parallel machine scheduling with step deteriorating jobs and setup times by a hybrid discrete cuckoo search algorithm

This article considers the parallel machine scheduling problem with step-deteriorating jobs and sequence-dependent setup times. The objective is to minimize the total tardiness by determining the allocation and sequence of jobs on identical parallel machines. In this problem, the processing time of each job is a step function dependent upon its starting time. An individual extended time is penalized when the starting time of a job is later than a specific deterioration date. The possibility of deterioration of a job makes the parallel machine scheduling problem more challenging than ordinary ones. A mixed integer programming model for the optimal solution is derived. Due to its NP-hard nature, a hybrid discrete cuckoo search algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. In order to generate a good initial swarm, a modified heuristic named the MBHG is incorporated into the initialization of population. Several discrete operators are proposed in the random walk of Lévy Flights and the crossover search. Moreover, a local search procedure based on variable neighborhood descent is integrated into the algorithm as a hybrid strategy in order to improve the quality of elite solutions. Computational experiments are executed on two sets of randomly generated test instances. The results show that the proposed hybrid algorithm can yield better solutions in comparison with the commercial solver CPLEX with one hour time limit, discrete cuckoo search algorithm and the existing variable neighborhood search algorithm.
