No-Regret Replanning under Uncertainty

This paper explores the problem of path planning under uncertainty. Specifically, we consider online receding horizon based planners that need to operate in a latent environment where the latent information can be modeled via Gaussian Processes. Online path planning in latent environments is challenging since the robot needs to explore the environment to get a more accurate model of latent information for better planning later and also achieves the task as quick as possible. We propose UCB style algorithms that are popular in the bandit settings and show how those analyses can be adapted to the online robotic path planning problems. The proposed algorithm trades-off exploration and exploitation in near-optimal manner and has appealing no-regret properties. We demonstrate the efficacy of the framework on the application of aircraft flight path planning when the winds are partially observed.

Learning to Filter with Predictive State Inference Machines

Latent state space models are a fundamental and widely used tool for modeling dynamical systems. However, they are difficult to learn from data and learned models often lack performance guarantees on inference tasks such as filtering and prediction. In this work, we present the PREDICTIVE STATE INFERENCE MACHINE (PSIM), a data-driven method that considers the inference procedure on a dynamical system as a composition of predictors. The key idea is that rather than first learning a latent state space model, and then using the learned model for inference, PSIM directly learns predictors for inference in predictive state space. We provide theoretical guarantees for inference, in both realizable and agnostic settings, and showcase practical performance on a variety of simulated and real world robotics benchmarks.

Analysis of Large Unreliable Stochastic Networks

In this paper a stochastic model of a large distributed system where users' files are duplicated on unreliable data servers is investigated. Due to a server breakdown, a copy of a file can be lost, it can be retrieved if another copy of the same file is stored on other servers. In the case where no other copy of a given file is present in the network, it is definitively lost. In order to have multiple copies of a given file, it is assumed that each server can devote a fraction of its processing capacity to duplicate files on other servers to enhance the durability of the system. A simplified stochastic model of this network is analyzed. It is assumed that a copy of a given file is lost at some fixed rate and that the initial state is optimal: each file has the maximum number $d$ of copies located on the servers of the network. Due to random losses, the state of the network is transient and all files will be eventually lost. As a consequence, a transient $d$-dimensional Markov process $(X(t))$ with a unique absorbing state describes the evolution this network. By taking a scaling parameter $N$ related to the number of nodes of the network. a scaling analysis of this process is developed. The asymptotic behavior of $(X(t))$ is analyzed on time scales of the type $t\mapsto N^p t$ for $0\leq p\leq d{-}1$. The paper derives asymptotic results on the decay of the network: Under a stability assumption, the main results state that the critical time scale for the decay of the system is given by $t\mapsto N^{d-1}t$. When the stability condition is not satisfied, it is shown that the state of the network converges to an interesting local equilibrium which is investigated. As a consequence it sheds some light on the role of the key parameters $λ$, the duplication rate and $d$, the maximal number of copies, in the design of these systems.

$\bar{B}^0_s \to Kπ,KK$ decays and effects of the next-to-leading order contribution

By employing the perturbative QCD(pQCD) factorization approach, we calculate the branching ratios and CP violating asymmetries of the four $\bar{B}_s^0 \to Kπ$ and $K K $ decays, with the inclusion of all known next-to-leading order (NLO) contributions. We find numerically that (a) the NLO contribution can interfere with the LO part constructively or destructively for different decay modes; (b) the NLO contribution leads to a $22\%$ decrease for $Br(\bar{B}^0_s \to K^+ π^-)$, but $\sim 50\%$ enhancements to other three considered $\bar{B}_s$ decays, and therefore play an important role in interpreting the measured values of the branching ratios; and (c) for both $\bar{B}_s^0 \to K^+ π^-$ and $\bar{B}_s^0 \to K^+K^- $ decays, the NLO pQCD predictions for the direct and mixing induced CP-violating asymmetries agree very well with the measured values in both the sign and the magnitude.
