Exoplanet Statistics and Theoretical Implications

In the last few years, significant advances have been made in understanding the distributions of exoplanet populations and the architecture of planetary systems. We review the recent progress of planet statistics, with a focus on the inner <~ 1 AU region of the planetary system that has been fairly thoroughly surveyed by the Kepler mission. We also discuss the theoretical implications of these statistical results for planet formation and dynamical evolution.

An Earth-mass Planet in a Time of Covid-19: KMT-2020-BLG-0414Lb

We report the discovery of KMT-2020-BLG-0414Lb, with a planet-to-host mass ratio $q_2 = 0.9$--$1.2 \times 10^{-5} = 3$--$4~q_{\oplus}$ at $1σ$, which is the lowest mass-ratio microlensing planet to date. Together with two other recent discoveries ($4 \lesssim q/q_\oplus \lesssim 6$), it fills out the previous empty sector at the bottom of the triangular $(\log s, \log q)$ diagram, where $s$ is the planet-host separation in units of the angular Einstein radius $θ_{\rm E}$. Hence, these discoveries call into question the existence, or at least the strength, of the break in the mass-ratio function that was previously suggested to account for the paucity of very low-$q$ planets. Due to the extreme magnification of the event, $A_{\rm max}\sim 1450$ for the underlying single-lens event, its light curve revealed a second companion with $q_3 \sim 0.05$ and $|\log s_3| \sim 1$, i.e., a factor $\sim 10$ closer to or farther from the host in projection. The measurements of the microlens parallax $π_{\rm E}$ and the angular Einstein radius $θ_{\rm E}$ allow estimates of the host, planet, and second companion masses, $(M_1, M_2, M_3) \sim (0.3M_{\odot}, 1.0M_{\oplus}, 17M_{J})$, the planet and second companion projected separations, $(a_{\perp,2}, a_{\perp,3}) \sim (1.5, 0.15~{\rm or}~15)$~au, and system distance $D_{\rm L} \sim 1$ kpc. The lens could account for most or all of the blended light ($I \sim 19.3$) and so can be studied immediately with high-resolution photometric and spectroscopic observations that can further clarify the nature of the system. The planet was found as part of a new program of high-cadence follow-up observations of high-magnification events. The detection of this planet, despite the considerable difficulties imposed by Covid-19 (two KMT sites and OGLE were shut down), illustrates the potential utility of this program.

Temperature dependent coherence properties of NV ensemble in diamond up to 600K

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is an ideal candidate for quantum sensors because of its excellent optical and coherence property. However, previous studies are usually conducted at low or room temperature. The lack of full knowledge of coherence properties of the NV center at high temperature limits NV's further applications. Here, we systematically explore the coherence properties of the NV center ensemble at temperatures from 300 K to 600 K. Coherence time $T_2$ decreases rapidly from $184 μs$ at 300 K to $30 μs$ at 600 K, which is attributed to the interaction with paramagnetic impurities. Single-quantum and double-quantum relaxation rates show an obvious temperature-dependent behavior as well, and both of them are dominated by the two phonon Raman process. While the inhomogeneous dephasing time $T_2^*$ and thermal echo decoherence time $T_{TE}$ remain almost unchanged as temperature rises. Since $T_{TE}$ changed slightly as temperature rises, a thermal-echo-based thermometer is demonstrated to have a sensitivity of $41 mK/\sqrt{Hz}$ at 450 K. These findings will help to pave the way toward NV-based high-temperature sensing, as well as to have a more comprehensive understanding of the origin of decoherence in the solid-state qubit.

Experimental implementation of universal holonomic quantum computation on solid-state spins with optimal control

Experimental realization of a universal set of quantum logic gates with high-fidelity is critical to quantum information processing, which is always challenging by inevitable interaction between the quantum system and environment. Geometric quantum computation is noise immune, and thus offers a robust way to enhance the control fidelity. Here, we experimentally implement the recently proposed extensible nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation with solid spins in diamond at room-temperature, which maintains both flexibility and resilience against decoherence and system control errors. Compared with previous geometric method, the fidelities of a universal set of holonomic single-qubit and two-qubit quantum logic gates are improved in experiment. Therefore, this work makes an important step towards fault-tolerant scalable geometric quantum computation in realistic systems.

OGLE-2018-BLG-0567Lb and OGLE-2018-BLG-0962Lb: Two Microlensing Planets through Planetary-Caustic Channel

We present the analyses of two microlensing events, OGLE-2018-BLG-0567 and OGLE-2018-BLG-0962. In both events, the short-lasting anomalies were densely and continuously covered by two high-cadence surveys. The light-curve modeling indicates that the anomalies are generated by source crossings over the planetary caustics induced by planetary companions to the hosts. The estimated planet/host separation (scaled to the angular Einstein radius $θ_{\rm E}$) and mass ratio are $(s, q) = (1.81, 1.24\times10^{-3})$ and $(s, q) = (1.25, 2.38\times10^{-3})$, respectively. From Bayesian analyses, we estimate the host and planet masses as $(M_{\rm h}, M_{\rm p}) = (0.24_{-0.13}^{+0.16}\,M_{\odot}, 0.32_{-0.16}^{+0.34}\,M_{\rm J})$ and $(M_{\rm h}, M_{\rm p}) = (0.55_{-0.29}^{+0.32}\,M_{\odot}, 1.37_{-0.72}^{+0.80}\,M_{\rm J})$, respectively. These planetary systems are located at a distance of $7.07_{-1.15}^{+0.93}\,{\rm kpc}$ for OGLE-2018-BLG-0567 and $6.47_{-1.73}^{+1.04}\,{\rm kpc}$ for OGLE-2018-BLG-0962, suggesting that they are likely to be near the Galactic bulge. The two events prove the capability of current high-cadence surveys for finding planets through the planetary-caustic channel. We find that most published planetary-caustic planets are found in Hollywood events in which the source size strongly contributes to the anomaly cross section relative to the size of the caustic.

OGLE-2019-BLG-0960Lb: The Smallest Microlensing Planet

We report the analysis of OGLE-2019-BLG-0960, which contains the smallest mass-ratio microlensing planet found to date (q = 1.2--1.6 x 10^{-5} at 1-sigma). Although there is substantial uncertainty in the satellite parallax measured by Spitzer, the measurement of the annual parallax effect combined with the finite source effect allows us to determine the mass of the host star (M_L = 0.3--0.6 M_Sun), the mass of its planet (m_p = 1.4--3.1 M_Earth), the projected separation between the host and planet (a_perp = 1.2--2.3 au), and the distance to the lens system (D_L = 0.6--1.2 kpc). The lens is plausibly the blend, which could be checked with adaptive optics observations. As the smallest planet clearly below the break in the mass-ratio function (Suzuki et al. 2016; Jung et al. 2019), it demonstrates that current experiments are powerful enough to robustly measure the slope of the mass-ratio function below that break. We find that the cross-section for detecting small planets is maximized for planets with separations just outside of the boundary for resonant caustics and that sensitivity to such planets can be maximized by intensively monitoring events whenever they are magnified by a factor A > 5. Finally, an empirical investigation demonstrates that most planets showing a degeneracy between (s > 1) and (s < 1) solutions are not in the regime (|log s| >> 0) for which the "close"/"wide" degeneracy was derived. This investigation suggests a link between the "close"/"wide" and "inner/outer" degeneracies and also that the symmetry in the lens equation goes much deeper than symmetries uncovered for the limiting cases.

The 'COVID' Crash of the 2020 U.S. Stock Market

We employed the log-periodic power law singularity (LPPLS) methodology to systematically investigate the 2020 stock market crash in the U.S. equities sectors with different levels of total market capitalizations through four major U.S. stock market indexes, including the Wilshire 5000 Total Market index, the S&P 500 index, the S&P MidCap 400 index, and the Russell 2000 index, representing the stocks overall, the large capitalization stocks, the middle capitalization stocks and the small capitalization stocks, respectively. During the 2020 U.S. stock market crash, all four indexes lost more than a third of their values within five weeks, while both the middle capitalization stocks and the small capitalization stocks have suffered much greater losses than the large capitalization stocks and stocks overall. Our results indicate that the price trajectories of these four stock market indexes prior to the 2020 stock market crash have clearly featured the obvious LPPLS bubble pattern and were indeed in a positive bubble regime. Contrary to the popular belief that the COVID-19 led to the 2020 stock market crash, the 2020 U.S. stock market crash was endogenous, stemming from the increasingly systemic instability of the stock market itself. We also performed the complementary post-mortem analysis of the 2020 U.S. stock market crash. Our analyses indicate that the 2020 U.S. stock market crash originated from a bubble which began to form as early as September 2018; and the bubbles in stocks with different levels of total market capitalizations have significantly different starting time profiles. This study not only sheds new light on the making of the 2020 U.S. stock market crash but also creates a novel pipeline for future real-time crash detection and mechanism dissection of any financial market and/or economic index.

The 2020 Global Stock Market Crash: Endogenous or Exogenous?

Starting on February 20, 2020, the global stock markets began to suffer the worst decline since the Great Recession in 2008, and the COVID-19 has been widely blamed on the stock market crashes. In this study, we applied the log-periodic power law singularity (LPPLS) methodology based on multilevel time series to unravel the underlying mechanisms of the 2020 global stock market crash by analyzing the trajectories of 10 major stock market indexes from both developed and emergent stock markets, including the S&P 500, DJIA, NASDAQ, FTSE, DAX, NIKKEI, CSI 300, HSI, BSESN, and BOVESPA. In order to effectively distinguish between endogenous crash and exogenous crash, we proposed using the LPPLS confidence indicator as a classification proxy. The results show that the apparent LPPLS bubble patterns of the super-exponential increase, corrected by the accelerating logarithm-periodic oscillations, have indeed presented in the price trajectories of the seven indexes: S&P 500, DJIA, NASDAQ, DAX, CSI 300, BSESN, and BOVESPA, indicating that the large positive bubbles have formed endogenously prior to the 2020 stock market crash, and the subsequent crashes for the seven indexes are endogenous, stemming from the increasingly systemic instability of the stock markets, while the well-known external shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic etc. only acted as sparks during the 2020 global stock market crash. In contrast, the obvious signatures of the LPPLS model have not been observed in the price trajectories of the three remaining indexes: FTSE, NIKKEI, and HSI, signifying that the crashes in these three indexes are exogenous, stemming from external shocks. The novel classification method of crash types proposed in this study can also be used to analyze regime changes of any price trajectories in global financial markets.

Looking for the possible gluon condensation signature in sub-TeV gamma-ray spectra: from active galactic nuclei to gamma ray bursts

The gluon condensation in the proton as a dynamical model is used to treat a series of unsolved puzzles in sub-TeV gamma ray spectra, they include the broken power-law of blazar's radiation, the hardening confusion of 1ES 1426+428, Mkn 501, and the recently recorded sub-TeV gamma spectra of GRB 180720B and GRB 190114C. We find that the above anomalous phenomena in gamma ray energy spectra can be understood with the simple broken power law based on a QCD gluon condensation effect.

Constraining the Parameter Space of a Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate in Applied Field with Iterative Optimization

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) state is an exotic state of matter featuring a high degree of entanglement and lack of long-range magnetic order in the zero-temperature limit. The triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO4 is a candidate QSL host, and precise determination of the Hamiltonian parameters is critical to understanding the nature of the possible ground states. However, the presence of chemical disorder has made directly measuring these parameters challenging. Here we report neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility measurements covering a broad range of applied magnetic field at low temperature. Our data shows a field-induced crossover in YbMgGaO4, which we reproduce with complementary classical Monte Carlo and Density Matrix Renormalization Group simulations. Neutron scattering data above and below the crossover reveal a shift in scattering intensity from M to K points and, collectively, our measurements provide essential characteristics of the phase crossover that we employ to strictly constrain proposed magnetic Hamiltonian parameters despite the chemical disorder. Constrained exchange parameters further suggest the material's proximity to the QSL state in the clean limit. More broadly, our approach demonstrates a means of pursuing QSL candidates where Hamiltonian parameters might otherwise be obscured by disorder.

MVP-BERT: Redesigning Vocabularies for Chinese BERT and Multi-Vocab Pretraining

Despite the development of pre-trained language models (PLMs) significantly raise the performances of various Chinese natural language processing (NLP) tasks, the vocabulary for these Chinese PLMs remain to be the one provided by Google Chinese Bert \cite{devlin2018bert}, which is based on Chinese characters. Second, the masked language model pre-training is based on a single vocabulary, which limits its downstream task performances. In this work, we first propose a novel method, \emph{seg\_tok}, to form the vocabulary of Chinese BERT, with the help of Chinese word segmentation (CWS) and subword tokenization. Then we propose three versions of multi-vocabulary pretraining (MVP) to improve the models expressiveness. Experiments show that: (a) compared with char based vocabulary, \emph{seg\_tok} does not only improves the performances of Chinese PLMs on sentence level tasks, it can also improve efficiency; (b) MVP improves PLMs' downstream performance, especially it can improve \emph{seg\_tok}'s performances on sequence labeling tasks.

Precision-Recall Curve (PRC) Classification Trees

The classification of imbalanced data has presented a significant challenge for most well-known classification algorithms that were often designed for data with relatively balanced class distributions. Nevertheless skewed class distribution is a common feature in real world problems. It is especially prevalent in certain application domains with great need for machine learning and better predictive analysis such as disease diagnosis, fraud detection, bankruptcy prediction, and suspect identification. In this paper, we propose a novel tree-based algorithm based on the area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) for variable selection in the classification context. Our algorithm, named as the "Precision-Recall Curve classification tree", or simply the "PRC classification tree" modifies two crucial stages in tree building. The first stage is to maximize the area under the precision-recall curve in node variable selection. The second stage is to maximize the harmonic mean of recall and precision (F-measure) for threshold selection. We found the proposed PRC classification tree, and its subsequent extension, the PRC random forest, work well especially for class-imbalanced data sets. We have demonstrated that our methods outperform their classic counterparts, the usual CART and random forest for both synthetic and real data. Furthermore, the ROC classification tree proposed by our group previously has shown good performance in imbalanced data. The combination of them, the PRC-ROC tree, also shows great promise in identifying the minority class.

Predicting Parkinson's Disease with Multimodal Irregularly Collected Longitudinal Smartphone Data

Parkinsons Disease is a neurological disorder and prevalent in elderly people. Traditional ways to diagnose the disease rely on in-person subjective clinical evaluations on the quality of a set of activity tests. The high-resolution longitudinal activity data collected by smartphone applications nowadays make it possible to conduct remote and convenient health assessment. However, out-of-lab tests often suffer from poor quality controls as well as irregularly collected observations, leading to noisy test results. To address these issues, we propose a novel time-series based approach to predicting Parkinson's Disease with raw activity test data collected by smartphones in the wild. The proposed method first synchronizes discrete activity tests into multimodal features at unified time points. Next, it distills and enriches local and global representations from noisy data across modalities and temporal observations by two attention modules. With the proposed mechanisms, our model is capable of handling noisy observations and at the same time extracting refined temporal features for improved prediction performance. Quantitative and qualitative results on a large public dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

AutoRC: Improving BERT Based Relation Classification Models via Architecture Search

Although BERT based relation classification (RC) models have achieved significant improvements over the traditional deep learning models, it seems that no consensus can be reached on what is the optimal architecture. Firstly, there are multiple alternatives for entity span identification. Second, there are a collection of pooling operations to aggregate the representations of entities and contexts into fixed length vectors. Third, it is difficult to manually decide which feature vectors, including their interactions, are beneficial for classifying the relation types. In this work, we design a comprehensive search space for BERT based RC models and employ neural architecture search (NAS) method to automatically discover the design choices mentioned above. Experiments on seven benchmark RC tasks show that our method is efficient and effective in finding better architectures than the baseline BERT based RC model. Ablation study demonstrates the necessity of our search space design and the effectiveness of our search method.

Designing Xenes with Two-Dimensional Triangular Lattice

Xenes, graphene-like two-dimensional (2D) monoelemental crystals with a honeycomb symmetry, have been the focus of numerous experimental and theoretical studies. In comparison, single-element 2D materials with a triangular lattice symmetry have not received due attention. Here, taking Pb as an example, we investigate the triangular-lattice monolayer made of group-IV atoms employing first-principles density functional theory calculations. The flat Pb monolayer supports a mirror-symmetry-protected spinless nodal line in the absence spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The introduction of an out-of-plane buckling creates a glide mirror, protecting an anisotropic Dirac nodal loop. Both flat and buckled Pb monolayers become topologically trivial after including SOC. A large buckling will make the Pb sheet a 2D semiconductor with symmetry-protected Dirac points below the Fermi level. The electronic structures of other group-IV triangular lattices such as Ge and Sn demonstrate strong similarity to Pb. We further design a quasi-3D crystal PbHfO$_2$ by alternately stacking Pb and 1T-HfO$_2$ monolayers. The new compound PbHfO$_2$ is dynamically stable and retains the properties of Pb monolayer. By applying epitaxial strains to PbHfO$_2$, it is possible to drive an insulator-to-metal transition coupled with an anti-ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition. Our results suggest the potential of the 2D triangular lattice as a complimentary platform to design new type of broadly-defined Xenes.

Circular dichroism in high-order harmonic generation: Heralding topological phases and transitions in Chern insulators

Topological materials are of interest to both fundamental science and advanced technologies, because topological states are robust with respect to perturbations and dissipation. Experimental detection of topological invariants is thus in great demand, but it remains extremely challenging. Ultrafast laser-matter interactions, and in particular high-harmonic generation (HHG), meanwhile, were proposed several years ago as tools to explore the structural and dynamical properties of various matter targets. Here we show that the high-harmonic emission signal produced by a circularly-polarized laser contains signatures of the topological phase transition in the paradigmatic Haldane model. In addition to clear shifts of the overall emissivity and harmonic cutoff, the high-harmonic emission shows a unique circular dichroism, which exhibits clear changes in behavior at the topological phase boundary. Our findings pave the way to understand fundamental questions about the ultrafast electron-hole pair dynamics in topological materials via non-linear high-harmonic generation spectroscopy.

Wave effects in the microlensing of pulsars and FRBs by point masses

Wave effects are often neglected in microlensing studies; however, for coherent point-like sources, such as pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs), wave effects will become important in their gravitational lensing. In this paper, we describe the wave optics formalism, its various limits, and the conditions for which these limits hold. Using the simple point lens as an example, we will show that the frequency dependence of wave effects breaks degeneracies that are present in the usual geometric optics limit, and constructive interference results in larger magnifications further from the lens. This latter fact leads to a generic increase in cross section for microlensing events in the wave-optics regime compared to the geometric optics regime. For realistic percent-level spectral sensitivities, this leads to a relative boost in lensing cross section of more than an order of magnitude. We apply the point-lens model to the lensing of FRBs and pulsars and find that these radio sources will be lensed in the full wave-optics regime by isolated masses in the range of $0.1-100\,M_\oplus$, which includes free-floating planets (FFPs), whose Einstein radius is smaller than the Fresnel scale. More generally, the interference pattern allows an instantaneous determination of lens masses, unlike traditional microlensing techniques which only yield a mass inference from the event timescale.

Stable Higgs mode in anisotropic quantum magnets

Low-energy excitations associated with the amplitude fluctuation of an order parameter in condensed matter systems can mimic the Higgs boson, an elementary particle in the standard model, and are dubbed as Higgs modes. Identifying the condensed-matter Higgs mode is challenging because it is known in many cases to decay rapidly into other low-energy bosonic modes, which renders the Higgs mode invisible. Therefore, it is desirable to find a way to stabilize the Higgs mode, which can offer an insight into the stabilization mechanism of the Higgs mode in condensed matter physics. In quantum magnets, magnetic order caused by spontaneous symmetry breaking supports transverse (magnons) and longitudinal (Higgs modes) fluctuations. When a continuous symmetry is broken, the Goldstone magnon mode generally has a lower excitation energy than the Higgs mode, causing a rapid decay of the latter. In this work, we show that a stable Higgs mode exists in anisotropic quantum magnets near the quantum critical point between the dimerized and magnetically ordered phases. We find that an easy axis anisotropy increases the magnon gap such that the magnon mode is above the Higgs mode near the quantum critical point, and the decay of the Higgs mode into the magnon mode is forbidden kinematically. Our results suggest that the anisotropic quantum magnets provide ideal platforms to explore the Higgs physics in condensed matter systems.
