Multidimensional Analysis of System Logs in Large-scale Cluster Systems

It is effective to improve the reliability and availability of large-scale cluster systems through the analysis of failures. Existed failure analysis methods understand and analyze failures from one or few dimension. The analysis results are partial and with less precision because of the limitation of data source. This paper presents multidimensional analysis based on graph mining to analyze multi-source system logs, which is a promising failure analysis method to get more complete and precise failure knowledge.

Memory efficient scheduling of Strassen-Winograd's matrix multiplication algorithm

We propose several new schedules for Strassen-Winograd's matrix multiplication algorithm, they reduce the extra memory allocation requirements by three different means: by introducing a few pre-additions, by overwriting the input matrices, or by using a first recursive level of classical multiplication. In particular, we show two fully in-place schedules: one having the same number of operations, if the input matrices can be overwritten; the other one, slightly increasing the constant of the leading term of the complexity, if the input matrices are read-only. Many of these schedules have been found by an implementation of an exhaustive search algorithm based on a pebble game.

Charm hadron production in relativistic heavy ion collisions within a quark combination model

We investigate the charm hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with the quark combination model. The $p_{T}$ dependencies of the charm baryon to meson ratios such as $\frac{Λ_{c}+\barΛ_{c}}{D^{0}+\bar{D}^{0}}$, $\frac{Λ_{c}+\barΛ_{c}}{D^{+}+D^{-}}$ and $\frac{Λ_{c}+\barΛ_{c}}{D_{s}^{+}+D_{s}^{-}}$ in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV are obtained. The charm baryon enhancement in the intermediate $p_{T}$ range is very prominent, which further, together with the strangeness enhancement, affect the charm hadron ratios and lead to a $\sim17%$ larger charm cross-section given by PHENIX. The dependencies of the charm hadron ratios on energy, centrality, and other parameters are also investigated. Predictions of the charm hadron ratios for the upgrade of RHIC and for LHC are presented.

Ni/Ni3C Core-Shell Nanochains and Its Magnetic Properties: One-Step Synthesis at low temperature

One-dimensional Ni/Ni3C core-shell nanoball chains with an average diameter by around 30 nm were synthesized by means of a mild chemical solution method using a soft template of trioctylphosphineoxide (TOPO). It was revealed that the uniform Ni nanochains were capped with Ni3C thin shells by about 1 to 4 nm in thickness and each Ni core consists of polygrains. The coercivity of the core-shell nanochains is much enhanced (600 Oe at 5 K) and comparable with single Ni nanowires due to the one-dimensional shape anisotropy. Deriving from the distinctive structure of Ni core and Ni3C shell, this architecture may possess a possible bi-functionality. This unique architecture is also useful for the study on the magnetization reversal mechanism of one-dimensional magnetic nanostructure.

Finite size effect on Neel temperature with Co3O4 nanoparticles

Finite size effect on the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, TN, of Co3O4 nanoparticles of 75, 35, and 16 nm in diameter, has been investigated. The AFM transition point, TN, reduces with the decreasing diameter, d. Along with the results from the previous experiments on the Co3O4 nanoparticles of 8 and 4.3 nm, the variation of TN with d appears to follow the finite size relation. According to the scaling behavior, the shift exponent is determined as λ= 1.4 \pm 0.4, the correlation length, \ksi_0 = 3.0 \pm 0.3 nm, and the bulk Neel temperature, TN(\infint) = 38.6 \pm 0.7 K.

Flux period scaling in the Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer

We report experiments on electron interferometer devices in the quantum Hall regime, where edge channels circle a 2D electron island. The main confinement is produced by etch trenches, into which front gate metal is deposited. We find a linear dependence of the Aharonov-Bohm period on gate voltage for electrons (integer filling f=1) and for Laughlin quasiparticles (fractional 2/5 embedded in 1/3). The capacitance of a large 2D electron island with respect to the front gates is approximately proportional to the island radius. Comparing the experimental data for the integer and the fractional fillings and for two samples, we find the magnetic field period and its slope scale with the radius of the Aharonov-Bohm orbit. Analysis of the directly measured integer and fractional slope data allows to determine the interferometer area in the fractional regime, and thus the Laughlin quasiparticle flux period of 5h/e, within the experimental accuracy.

Experimental realization of Laughlin quasiparticle interferometers

Laughlin quasiparticles are the elementary excitations of a highly-correlated fractional quantum Hall electron fluid. They have fractional charge and obey fractional statistics. The quasiparticles can propagate quantum-coherently in chiral edge channels, and constructively or destructively interfere. Unlike electrons, the interference condition for Laughlin quasiparticles has a non-vanishing statistical contribution that can be observed experimentally. Two kinds of interferometer devices have been realized. In the primary-filling interferometer, the entire device has filling 1/3, and the e/3 edge channel quasiparticles encircle identical e/3 island quasiparticles. Here the flux period is h/e, same as for electrons, but the back-gate charge period is e/3. In the second kind of interferometer, a lower density edge channel at filling 1/3 forms around a higher density island at filling 2/5, so that e/3 edge quasiparticles encircle e/5 island quasiparticles. Here we observe superperiodic oscillations with 5h/e flux and 2e charge periods, both corresponding to excitation of ten island quasiparticles. These periods can be understood as imposed by the anyonic braiding statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles.

Quantum transport in electron Fabry-Perot interferometers

We report experiments on Fabry-Perot electron interferometers in the integer quantum Hall regime. The GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure devices consist of two constrictions defined by etch trenches in 2D electron layer, enclosing an approximately circular island. The interferometer is formed by counterpropagating chiral edge channels coupled by tunneling in the two constrictions. Interference fringes are observed as conductance oscillations, similar to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Front gates deposited in etch trenches allow to fine-tune the device and to change the constriction filling f relative to the bulk filling. Quantum-coherent conductance oscillations are observed on the f = 1 - 4 plateaus. On plateau f we observe f conductance oscillations per fundamental flux period h/e. This is attributed to the dominance of the electron-electron Coulomb interaction, effectively mixing Landau level occupation. On the other hand, the back-gate charge period is the same (one electron) on all plateaus, independent of filling. This is attributed to the self-consistent electrostatics in the large electron island. We also report dependence of the oscillation period on front-gate voltage for f = 1, 2 and 4 for three devices. We find a linear dependence, with the slope inversely proportional to f for f = 1 and 2.

Experimental realization of a primary-filling e/3 quasiparticle interferometer

We report experiments on a Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer where the entire system is on the 1/3 primary fractional quantum Hall plateau. Electron-beam lithography is used to define an approximately circular 2D electron island separated from the 2D bulk by two wide constrictions. The interferometer consists of counterpropagating chiral edge channels coupled by quantum-coherent tunneling in the two constrictions, thus enclosing an island area. Interference fringes are observed as conductance oscillations, similar to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The flux and charge periods of the interferometer device are calibrated with electrons in the integer quantum Hall regime. In the fractional regime we observe magnetic flux and charge periods h/e and e/3, respectively, corresponding to creation of one quasielectron in the island. Quantum theory predicts a 3h/e flux period for charge e/3, integer statistics particles. Accordingly, the observed periods demonstrate the anyonic statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles.

Primary-Filling e/3 Quasiparticle Interferometer

We report experimental realization of a quasiparticle interferometer where the entire system is in 1/3 primary fractional quantum Hall state. The interferometer consists of chiral edge channels coupled by quantum-coherent tunneling in two constrictions, thus enclosing an Aharonov-Bohm area. We observe magnetic flux and charge periods h/e and e/3, equivalent to creation of one quasielectron in the island. Quantum theory predicts a 3h/e flux period for charge e/3, integer statistics particles. Accordingly, the observed periods demonstrate the anyonic statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles.

Size-dependent magnetic properties of Nickel nano-chains

Magnetic properties with 3 different sizes of Ni nanochains, synthesized by a technique of wet chemical solution, have been investigated experimentally. The sample sizes are 50 nm, 75 nm, and 150 nm with a typical length of a few microns. The characterizations by XRD and TEM reveal that the samples consist of Ni nano-particles forming one dimensional (1D) chain-like structure. The magnetic properties have been investigated by FC, ZFC measurements and M-H measurements. The results can be well explained within the context of core-shell model. First of all, the freezing of disordered spins in the shell layer have resulted in a peak-like structure on the ZFC curve. The peak position occurs around TF ~ 13 K. With the 50 nm sample, the field dependent behavior of TF(H) has been investigated in detail. It is well described by the de Almeida-Thouless (AT) equation for the surface spin glass state. Secondly, the shape anisotropy of 1D structure has caused a wide separation between the FC and ZFC curves. This is mainly attributed to the blocking of the core magnetism. Thirdly, by the M-H measurement in the low field region, the open hysteresis loop measured at 5 K < TF is significantly enlarged in comparison with that taken at T > TF. This indicates that a significant part of the contribution to the magnetic irreversibility at T < TF is coming from the disordered spins in the shell layer. Lastly, with reducing sample size, the coercivity, HC, increases, whereas the saturation magnetization goes down dramatically. These imply that, as the sample size reduces, the effect of shape anisotropy becomes larger in the magnetization reversal process and the contribution to the magnetism from the ferromagnetically ordered core becomes smaller.

Observation of Aharonov-Bohm Superperiod in a Laughlin Quasiparticle Interferometer

We report an Aharonov-Bohm superperiod of five magnetic flux quanta (5h/e) observed in a Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer, where an edge channel of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall fluid encircles an island of the 2/5 fluid. This result does not violate the auge invariance argument of the Byers-Yang theorem because the magnetic flux, in addition to affecting the Aharonov-Bohm phase of the encircling 1/3 quasiparticles, creates the 2/5 quasiparticles in the island. The superperiod is accordingly understood as imposed by the anyonic statistical interaction of Laughlin quasiparticles.

A new criterion for finite non-cyclic groups

Let $H$ be a subgroup of a group $G$. We say that $H$ satisfies the power condition with respect to $G$, or $H$ is a power subgroup of $G$, if there exists a non-negative integer $m$ such that $H=G^{m}= $. In this note, the following theorem is proved: Let $G$ be a group and $k$ the number of non-power subgroups of $G$. Then (1) $k=0$ if and only if $G$ is a cyclic group(theorem of F. Sz$\acute{a}$sz) ;(2) $0 < k <\infty$ if and only if $G$ is a finite non-cyclic group; (3) $k=\infty$ if and only if $G$ is a infinte non-cyclic group. Thus we get a new criterion for the finite non-cyclic groups.

Realization of a Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer: Observation of fractional statistics

In two dimensions, the laws of physics permit existence of anyons, particles with fractional statistics which is neither Fermi nor Bose. That is, upon exchange of two such particles, the quantum state of a system acquires a phase which is neither 0 nor π, but can be any value. The elementary excitations (Laughlin quasiparticles) of a fractional quantum Hall fluid have fractional electric charge and are expected to obey fractional statistics. Here we report experimental realization of a novel Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer, where quasiparticles of the 1/3 fluid execute a closed path around an island of the 2/5 fluid and thus acquire statistical phase. Interference fringes are observed as conductance oscillations as a function of magnetic flux, similar to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. We observe the interference shift by one fringe upon introduction of five magnetic flux quanta (5h/e) into the island. The corresponding 2e charge period is confirmed directly in calibrated gate experiments. These results constitute direct observation of fractional statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles.

Quasinormal modes for Weyl neutrino field in R-N black holes

We employ WKB approximation up to the third order to determine the low-lying quasinormal modes for Weyl neutrino field in R-N black holes, which are the most relevant to the evolution of the field around a black hole in the intermediate stage. It is showed that the quasinormal mode frequencies for Weyl neutrino field in R-N black holes are different from those in Schwartzchild black holes owning to the charge-induced additional gravitation, and the variations of the quasinormal mode frequencies for Weyl neutrino field are similar to those for integral spin fields in R-N black holes.

Contamination of Cluster Radio Sources in the Measurement of the Thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Angular Power Spectrum

We present a quantitative estimate of the confusion of cluster radio halos and galaxies in the measurement of the angular power spectrum of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. To achieve the goal, we use a purely analytic approach to both radio sources and dark matter of clusters by incorporating empirical models and observational facts together with some theoretical considerations. It is shown that the correction of cluster radio halos and galaxies to the measurement of the thermal SZ angular power spectrum is no more than 20% at $l>2000$ for observing frequencies $ν>30$ GHz. This eliminates the concern that the SZ measurement may be seriously contaminated by the existence of cluster radio sources.

Decay of spin-1/2 field around Reissner-Nordstrom black hole

To find what influence the charge of the black hole $Q$ will bring to the evolution of the quasinormal modes, we calculate the quasinormal frequencies of the neutrino field (charge $e=0$) perturbations and those of the massless Dirac field ($e\neq 0$) perturbations in the RN metric. The influences of $Q$, $e$, the momentum quantum number $l$, and the mode number $n$ are discussed. Among the conclusions, the most important one is that, at the stage of quasinormal ringing, the larger when the black hole and the field have the same kind of charge ($eQ>0$), the quasinormal modes of the massless charged Dirac field decay faster than those of the neutral ones, and when $eQ<0$, the massless charged Dirac field decays slower.

Killing Reduction of 5-Dimensional Spacetimes

In a 5-dimensional spacetime ($M,g_{ab}$) with a Killing vector field $ξ^a$ which is either everywhere timelike or everywhere spacelike, the collection of all trajectories of $ξ^a$ gives a 4-dimensional space $S$. The reduction of ($M,g_{ab}$) is studied in the geometric language, which is a generalization of Geroch's method for the reduction of 4-dimensional spacetime. A 4-dimensional gravity coupled to a vector field and a scalar field on $S$ is obtained by the reduction of vacuum Einstein's equations on $M$, which gives also an alternative description of the 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory. Besides the symmetry-reduced action from the Hilbert action on $M$, an alternative action of the fields on $S$ is also obtained, the variations of which lead to the same fields equations as those reduced from the vacuum Einstein equation on $M$.
