Chirality in Block Copolymer Melts: Mesoscopic Helicity from Inter-Segment Twist

We study the effects of chirality at the segment scale on the thermodynamics of block copolymer melts using self consistent field theory. In linear diblock melts where segments of one block prefer a twisted, or cholesteric, texture, we show that melt assembly is critically sensitive to the ratio of random coil size to the preferred pitch of cholesteric twist. For weakly-chiral melts (large pitch), mesophases remain achiral, while below a critical value of pitch, two mesocopically chiral phases are stable: an undulated lamellar phase; and a phase of hexagonally-ordered helices. We show that the non-linear sensitivity of meso-scale chiral order to preferred pitch derives specifically from the geometric and thermodynamic coupling of the helical mesodomain shape to the twisted packing of chiral segments within the core, giving rise to a second-order cylinder-to-helix transition.

The universal Kummer congruences

Let $p$ be a prime. In this paper, we present a detailed $p$-adic analysis to factorials and double factorials and their congruences. We give good bounds for the $p$-adic sizes of the coefficients of the divided universal Bernoulli number ${{\hat B_n}\over n}$ when $n$ is divisible by $p-1$. Using these we then establish the universal Kummer congruences modulo powers of a prime $p$ for the divided universal Bernoulli numbers ${{\hat B_n}\over n}$ when $n$ is divisible by $p-1$.

The 2-adic valuations of Stirling numbers of the second kind

In this paper, we investigate the 2-adic valuations of the Stirling numbers $S(n, k)$ of the second kind. We show that $v_2(S(4i, 5))=v_2(S(4i+3, 5))$ if and only if $i\not\equiv 7\pmod {32}$. This confirms a conjecture of Amdeberhan, Manna and Moll raised in 2008. We show also that $v_2(S(2^n+1, k+1))= s_2(n)-1$ for any positive integer $n$, where $s_2(n)$ is the sum of binary digits of $n$. It proves another conjecture of Amdeberhan, Manna and Moll.

Selective Synthesis Combined with Chemical Separation of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Chirality Selection

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are potential materials for future nanoelectronics. Since the electronic and optical properties of SWNTs strongly depend on tube diameter and chirality, obtaining SWNTs with narrow (n,m) chirality distribution by selective growth or chemical separation has been an active area of research. Here, we demonstrate that a new, bimetallic FeRu catalyst affords SWNT growth with narrow diameter and chirality distribution in methane CVD. At 600C, methane CVD on FeRu catalyst produced predominantly (6,5) SWNTs according to Uv-vis-NIR absorption and photoluminescence excitation/emission (PLE) spectroscopic characterization. At 850C, the dominant semiconducting species produced are (8,4), (7,6) and (7,5) SWNTs, with much narrower distributions in diameter and chirality than materials grown by other catalysts. Further, we show that narrow-diameter/chirality growth combined with chemical separation by ion exchange chromatography (IEC) greatly facilitate achieving single-(m,n) SWNT samples, as demonstrated by obtaining highly enriched (8,4) SWNTs with near elimination of metallic SWNTs existing in the as-grown material.
