Reinforcement Learning Assisted Oxygen Therapy for COVID-19 Patients Under Intensive Care

Patients with severe Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) typically require supplemental oxygen as an essential treatment. We developed a machine learning algorithm, based on a deep Reinforcement Learning (RL), for continuous management of oxygen flow rate for critical ill patients under intensive care, which can identify the optimal personalized oxygen flow rate with strong potentials to reduce mortality rate relative to the current clinical practice. Basically, we modeled the oxygen flow trajectory of COVID-19 patients and their health outcomes as a Markov decision process. Based on individual patient characteristics and health status, a reinforcement learning based oxygen control policy is learned and real-time recommends the oxygen flow rate to reduce the mortality rate. We assessed the performance of proposed methods through cross validation by using a retrospective cohort of 1,372 critically ill patients with COVID-19 from New York University Langone Health ambulatory care with electronic health records from April 2020 to January 2021. The mean mortality rate under the RL algorithm is lower than standard of care by 2.57% (95% CI: 2.08- 3.06) reduction (P<0.001) from 7.94% under the standard of care to 5.37 % under our algorithm and the averaged recommended oxygen flow rate is 1.28 L/min (95% CI: 1.14-1.42) lower than the rate actually delivered to patients. Thus, the RL algorithm could potentially lead to better intensive care treatment that can reduce mortality rate, while saving the oxygen scarce resources. It can reduce the oxygen shortage issue and improve public health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blockchain-Enabled Internet-of-Things Platform for End-to-End Industrial Hemp Supply Chain

After being legalized as an agricultural commodity by the 2018 U.S. Farm Bill, the Industrial Hemp production is moved from limited pilot programs to a regulated agriculture production system, and the market keeps increasing since then. However, Industrial Hemp Supply Chain (IHSC) faces several critical challenges, including high complexity and variability, data tampering, and lack of immutable information tracking system. In this paper, we develop a blockchain enabled internet-of-things (IoT) platform for IHSC to support process tracking, scalability, interoperability, and risk management. Basically, we create a two-layer blockchain with proof-of-authority based smart contract, which can leverage local authorities with state/federal regulators to ensure and accelerate quality control verification and regulatory compliance. Then, we develop a user-friendly mobile app so that each participant can use smart phone to real-time collect and upload their data to the cloud, and further share the process verification and tracking information through the blockchain network. Our study indicates the proposed platform can support interoperability, improve the efficiency of quality control verification, and ensure the safety of regulated IHSC.

A Nonparametric Bayesian Framework for Uncertainty Quantification in Stochastic Simulation

When we use simulation to assess the performance of stochastic systems, the input models used to drive simulation experiments are often estimated from finite real-world data. There exist both input model and simulation estimation uncertainties in the system performance estimates. Without strong prior information on the input models and the system mean response surface, in this paper, we propose a Bayesian nonparametric framework to quantify the impact from both sources of uncertainty. Specifically, since the real-world data often represent the variability caused by various latent sources of uncertainty, Dirichlet Processes Mixtures (DPM) based nonparametric input models are introduced to model a mixture of heterogeneous distributions, which can faithfully capture the important features of real-world data, such as multi-modality and skewness. Bayesian posteriors of flexible input models characterize the input model estimation uncertainty, which automatically accounts for both model selection and parameter value uncertainty. Then, input model estimation uncertainty is propagated to outputs by using direct simulation. Thus, under very general conditions, our framework delivers an empirical credible interval accounting for both input and simulation uncertainties. A variance decomposition is further developed to quantify the relative contributions from both sources of uncertainty. Our approach is supported by rigorous theoretical and empirical study.

Constraining Properties of GRB Central Engines with X-ray flares

X-ray flares in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to be generated by the late activities of central engine, and thus provide an useful tool to diagnose the properties of central objects. In this paper, we work on a GRB X-ray flare sample whose bulk Lorentz factors are constrained by two different methods and the jet opening angles are determined by the jet breaks in afterglow lightcurves. Considering a hyperaccreting stellar-mass black hole (BH) as the central engine of GRBs and the Blandford \& Znajek process (BZ) as the jet production mechanism, we constrain the parameters of central engine by using the X-ray flare data. We find that the BZ mechanism is so powerful making it possible to interpret both GRB prompt emissions and bright X-ray flares. The wind parameter ($p$) and accreted mass ($M_d$) fall into reasonable ranges. Our result is also applied to GRB 170817A. The late X-ray flare in GRB 170817A, if it is true, might not be a BH origin.

Superconductivity at 44.4 K achieved by intercalating EMIM+ into FeSe

Superconductivity with transition temperature Tc above 40 K was observed in protonated FeSe (Hy-FeSe) previously with the ionic liquid of EMIM-BF4 used in the electrochemical process. However, the real superconducting phase is not clear until now, and detailed structural, magnetization and electrical transport measurements are lacking. By using similar protonating technique on FeSe single crystals, we obtained superconducting samples with Tc above 40 K. We show that the obtained superconducting phase is not Hy-FeSe but actually an organic-ion (C6H11N2+ referred to as EMIM+)-intercalated phase (EMIM)xFeSe. By using X-ray diffraction technique, two sets of index peaks corresponding with different c-axis lattice constants are detected in the protonated samples, which belong to the newly formed phase of intercalated (EMIM)xFeSe and the residual FeSe, respectively. The superconductivity of (EMIM)xFeSe with Tc of 44.4 K is confirmed by resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Temperature dependence of resistivity with different applied magnetic fields reveals that the upper critical field Hc2 is quite high, while the irreversibility field Hirr is suppressed quickly with increasing temperature till about 20 K. This indicates that the resultant compound has a high anisotropy with a large spacing between the FeSe layers.

Langevin dynamics of heavy quarks in a soft-hard factorized approach

By utilizing a soft-hard factorized model, which combines a thermal perturbative description of soft scatterings and a perturbative QCD-based calculation for hard collisions, we study the energy and temperature dependence of the heavy quark diffusion coefficients in Langevin dynamics. The adjustable parameters are fixed from the comprehensive model-data comparison. We find that a small value of the spatial diffusion coefficient at transition temperature is preferred by data $2πTD_{s}(T_{c}) \simeq 6$. With the parameter-optimized model, we are able to describe simultaneously the prompt $D^{0}$ $R_{\rm AA}$ and $v_{2}$ data at $p_{\rm T}\le8$ GeV in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ and $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV. We also make predictions for non-prompt $D^{0}$ meson for future experimental tests down to the low momentum region.

On the Stratification of Product Portfolios

Stratifying commercial product portfolios into multiple classes of decreasing priority, ABCD analysis, is a common supply chain tool. Key planning parameters that drive strategic and execution priorities are tied to the resulting segmentation. These priorities in turn drive supply chain performance. For large product assortments, manual segmentation is infeasible so an automated algorithm is needed. We therefore advocate that careful attention be paid to the design of such an ABCD algorithm and present three key features that can be incorporated into such a calculation to improve its quality and commercial utility.

Interpretable Biomanufacturing Process Risk and Sensitivity Analyses for Quality-by-Design and Stability Control

While biomanufacturing plays a significant role in supporting the economy and ensuring public health, it faces critical challenges, including complexity, high variability, lengthy lead time, and very limited process data, especially for personalized new cell and gene biotherapeutics. Driven by these challenges, we propose an interpretable semantic bioprocess probabilistic knowledge graph and develop a game theory based risk and sensitivity analyses for production process to facilitate quality-by-design and stability control. Specifically, by exploring the causal relationships and interactions of critical process parameters and quality attributes (CPPs/CQAs), we create a Bayesian network based probabilistic knowledge graph characterizing the complex causal interdependencies of all factors. Then, we introduce a Shapley value based sensitivity analysis, which can correctly quantify the variation contribution from each input factor on the outputs (i.e., productivity, product quality). Since the bioprocess model coefficients are learned from limited process observations, we derive the Bayesian posterior distribution to quantify model uncertainty and further develop the Shapley value based sensitivity analysis to evaluate the impact of estimation uncertainty from each set of model coefficients. Therefore, the proposed bioprocess risk and sensitivity analyses can identify the bottlenecks, guide the reliable process specifications and the most "informative" data collection, and improve production stability.

Twofold symmetry of $c$-axis resistivity in topological kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ with in-plane rotating magnetic field

In transition metal compounds, due to the interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, many intertwined orders exist with close energies. One of the commonly observed states is the so-called nematic electron state, which breaks the in-plane rotational symmetry. This nematic state appears in cuprates, iron-based superconductor, etc. Nematicity may coexist, affect, cooperate or compete with other orders. Here we show the anisotropic in-plane electronic state and superconductivity in a recently discovered kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ by measuring $c$-axis resistivity with the in-plane rotation of magnetic field. We observe a twofold symmetry of superconductivity in the superconducting state and a unique in-plane nematic electronic state in normal state when rotating the in-plane magnetic field. Interestingly these two orders are orthogonal to each other in terms of the field direction of the minimum resistivity. Our results shed new light in understanding non-trivial physical properties of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$.

Multi-Attribute Enhancement Network for Person Search

Person Search is designed to jointly solve the problems of Person Detection and Person Re-identification (Re-ID), in which the target person will be located in a large number of uncut images. Over the past few years, Person Search based on deep learning has made great progress. Visual character attributes play a key role in retrieving the query person, which has been explored in Re-ID but has been ignored in Person Search. So, we introduce attribute learning into the model, allowing the use of attribute features for retrieval task. Specifically, we propose a simple and effective model called Multi-Attribute Enhancement (MAE) which introduces attribute tags to learn local features. In addition to learning the global representation of pedestrians, it also learns the local representation, and combines the two aspects to learn robust features to promote the search performance. Additionally, we verify the effectiveness of our module on the existing benchmark dataset, CUHK-SYSU and PRW. Ultimately, our model achieves state-of-the-art among end-to-end methods, especially reaching 91.8% of mAP and 93.0% of rank-1 on CUHK-SYSU.Codes and models are available at https://github.com/chenlq123/MAE.

Quantum certification of state set and unitary channel

We study efficient quantum certification algorithms for quantum state set and unitary quantum channel. We present an algorithm that uses $O(\varepsilon^{-4}\ln |\mathcal{P}|)$ copies of an unknown state to distinguish whether the unknown state is contained in or $\varepsilon$-far from a finite set $\mathcal{P}$ of known states with respect to the trace distance. This algorithm is more sample-efficient in some settings. Previous study showed that one can distinguish whether an unknown unitary $U$ is equal to or $\varepsilon$-far from a known or unknown unitary $V$ in fixed dimension with $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$ uses of the unitary, in which the Choi state is used and thus an ancilla system is needed. We give an algorithm that distinguishes the two cases with $O(\varepsilon^{-1})$ uses of the unitary, using much fewer or no ancilla compared with previous results.

A Possible kilonova powered by magnetic wind from a newborn black hole

The merger of binary neutron stars (NS-NS) as the progenitor of short Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has been confirmed by the discovery of the association of the gravitational wave (GW) event GW170817 with GRB 170817A. However, the merger product of binary NS remains an open question. An X-ray plateau followed by a steep decay ("internal plateau") has been found in some short GRBs, implying that a supra-massive magnetar operates as the merger remnant and then collapses into a newborn black hole (BH) at the end of the plateau. X-ray bump or second-plateau following the "internal plateau" is considered as the expected signature from the fallback accretion onto this newborn BH through Blandford-Znajek mechanism (BZ). At the same time, a nearly isotropic wind driven by Blandford-Paynemechanism (BP) from the newborn BH's disk can produce a bright kilonova. Therefore, the bright kilonova observation for a short GRB with "internal plateau" (and followed by X-ray bump or second-plateau) provides further evidence for this scenario. In this paper, we find that GRB 160821B is a candidate of such a case, and the kilonova emission of GRB 160821B is possibly powered by the BP wind from a newborn BH. Future GW detection of GRB 160821B-like events may provide further support to this scenario, enable us to investigate the properties of the magnetar and the newborn BH, and constrain the equation of state of neutron stars.

Van Hove Singularity Arising from Mexican-Hat-Shaped Inverted Bands in the Topological Insulator Sn-doped Bi$_{1.1}$Sb$_{0.9}$Te$_{2}$S

The optical properties of Sn-doped Bi$_{1.1}$Sb$_{0.9}$Te$_{2}$S, the most bulk-insulating topological insulator thus far, have been examined at different temperatures over a broad frequency range. No Drude response is detected in the low-frequency range down to 30~cm$^{-1}$, corroborating the excellent bulk-insulating property of this material. Intriguingly, we observe a sharp peak at about 2\,200~cm$^{-1}$ in the optical conductivity at 5~K. Further quantitative analyses of the line shape and temperature dependence of this sharp peak, in combination with first-principles calculations, suggest that it corresponds to a van Hove singularity arising from Mexican-hat-shaped inverted bands. Such a van Hove singularity is a pivotal ingredient of various strongly correlated phases.

Testing Blandford-Znajek mechanism in black hole hyperaccretion flows for long-duration gamma-ray bursts

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are generally related to the core-collapse of massive stars. In the collapsar scenario, a rotating stellar-mass black hole (BH) surrounded by a hyperaccretion disk has been considered as one of the plausible candidates of GRB central engines. In this paper, we work on a sample including 146 long GRBs with significant jet break features in the multi-band afterglows. The jet opening angles can be then obtained by the jet break time. By asumming GRB jets powered by Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism in the BH hyperaccretion system, we analyze the distributions of the long GRB luminosities and durations in the samples, and constrain the accretion rates for the different BH spins. As the results, we find that the BZ mechanism is so powerful making it possible to interpret the long GRB prompt emissions within the reasonably accretion rates.

Data-Driven Stochastic Optimization for Power Grids Scheduling under High Wind Penetration

To address the environmental concern and improve the economic efficiency, the wind power is rapidly integrated into smart grids. However, the inherent uncertainty of wind energy raises operational challenges. To ensure the cost-efficient, reliable and robust operation, it is critically important to find the optimal decision that can correctly and rigorously hedge against all sources of uncertainty. In this paper, we propose data-driven stochastic unit commitment (SUC) to guide the power grids scheduling. Specifically, given the finite historical data, the posterior predictive distribution is developed to quantify the wind power prediction uncertainty accounting for both inherent stochastic uncertainty of wind power generation and input model estimation error. For complex power grid systems, a finite number of scenarios is used to estimate the expected cost in the planning horizon. To further control the impact of finite sampling error induced by using the sample average approximation (SAA), we propose a parallel computing based optimization solution methodology, which can quickly find the reliable optimal unit commitment decision hedging against various sources of uncertainty. The empirical study over six-bus and 118-bus systems demonstrates that our approach can provide more efficient and robust performance than the existing deterministic and stochastic unit commitment approaches.

Statistical Uncertainty Analysis for Stochastic Simulation

When we use simulation to evaluate the performance of a stochastic system, the simulation often contains input distributions estimated from real-world data; therefore, there is both simulation and input uncertainty in the performance estimates. Ignoring either source of uncertainty underestimates the overall statistical error. Simulation uncertainty can be reduced by additional computation (e.g., more replications). Input uncertainty can be reduced by collecting more real-world data, when feasible. This paper proposes an approach to quantify overall statistical uncertainty when the simulation is driven by independent parametric input distributions; specifically, we produce a confidence interval that accounts for both simulation and input uncertainty by using a metamodel-assisted bootstrapping approach. The input uncertainty is measured via bootstrapping, an equation-based stochastic kriging metamodel propagates the input uncertainty to the output mean, and both simulation and metamodel uncertainty are derived using properties of the metamodel. A variance decomposition is proposed to estimate the relative contribution of input to overall uncertainty; this information indicates whether the overall uncertainty can be significantly reduced through additional simulation alone. Asymptotic analysis provides theoretical support for our approach, while an empirical study demonstrates that it has good finite-sample performance.

Personalized Multimorbidity Management for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Using Reinforcement Learning of Electronic Health Records

Comorbid chronic conditions are common among people with type 2 diabetes. We developed an Artificial Intelligence algorithm, based on Reinforcement Learning (RL), for personalized diabetes and multi-morbidity management with strong potential to improve health outcomes relative to current clinical practice. In this paper, we modeled glycemia, blood pressure and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk as health outcomes using a retrospective cohort of 16,665 patients with type 2 diabetes from New York University Langone Health ambulatory care electronic health records in 2009 to 2017. We trained a RL prescription algorithm that recommends a treatment regimen optimizing patients' cumulative health outcomes using their individual characteristics and medical history at each encounter. The RL recommendations were evaluated on an independent subset of patients. The results demonstrate that the proposed personalized reinforcement learning prescriptive framework for type 2 diabetes yielded high concordance with clinicians' prescriptions and substantial improvements in glycemia, blood pressure, cardiovascular disease risk outcomes.

Effects of density-dependent scenarios of in-medium nucleon-nucleon interactions in heavy-ion collisions

Using a more reasonable separate density-dependent scenario instead of the total density-dependent scenario for in-medium $nn$, $pp$ and $np$ interactions, we examine effects of differences of in-medium nucleon-nucleon interactions in two density-dependent scenarios on isospin-sensitive observables in central $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Moreover, to more physically detect the differences between the nucleon-nucleon interactions in two density-dependent scenarios, we also map the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the separate density-dependent scenario into that in the total density-dependent scenario through fitting the identical constraints for symmetric nuclear matter as well as the identical slope parameter of nuclear symmetry energy at the saturation density. It is shown that two density-dependent scenarios also lead to essentially different symmetry potentials especially at high densities although they can lead to the identical equation of state for the symmetry nuclear matter as well as the identical symmetry energy for the isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. Consequently, these isospin-sensitive observables are also appreciably affected by the different density-dependent scenarios of in-medium nucleon-nucleon interactions. Therefore, according to these findings, it is suggested that effects of the separate density-dependent scenario of in-medium nucleon-nucleon interactions should be taken into account when probing the high-density symmetry energy using these isospin-sensitive observables in heavy-ion collisions.
