Decaying Dark Matter in Supersymmetric SU(5) Models

Motivated by recent observations from Pamela, Fermi and H.E.S.S., we consider dark matter decays in the framework of supersymmetric SU(5) grand unification theories. An SU(5) singlet S is assumed to be the main component of dark matters, which decays into visible particles through dimension six operators suppressed by the grand unification scale. Under certain conditions, S decays dominantly into a pair of sleptons with universal coupling for all generations. Subsequently, electrons and positrons are produced from cascade decays of these sleptons. These cascade decay chains smooth the electron/positron spectrum, which permit naturally a good fit to the Fermi LAT data. The observed positron fraction upturn by PAMELA can be reproduced simultaneously. We have also calculated diffuse gamma-ray spectra due to the electron/positron excesses and compared them with the preliminary Fermi LAT data from 0.1 GeV to 10 GeV in the region 0<l <360, 10<|b|<20. The photon spectrum of energy above 100 GeV, mainly from final state radiations, may be checked in the near future.

Electronic Transport in Chemical Vapor Deposited Graphene Synthesized on Cu: Quantum Hall Effect and Weak Localization

We report on electronic properties of graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on copper then transferred to SiO2/Si. Wafer-scale (up to 4 inches) graphene films have been synthesized, consisting dominantly of monolayer graphene as indicated by spectroscopic Raman mapping. Low temperature transport measurements are performed on micro devices fabricated from such CVD graphene, displaying ambipolar field effect (with on/off ratio ~5 and carrier mobilities up to ~3000 cm^2/Vs) and "half-integer" quantum Hall effect, a hall-mark of intrinsic electronic properties of monolayer graphene. We also observe weak localization and extract information about phase coherence and scattering of carriers.

Experimental verification of statistical correlation for bosons: Another kind of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

According to the identity principle in quantum theory, states of a system consisted of identical particles should maintain unchanged under interchanging between two of the particles. The whole wavefunction should be symmetrized or antisymmetrized. This leads to statistical correlations between particles, which exhibit observable effects. We design an experiment to directly observe such effects for bosons. The experiment is performed with two photons. The effect of statistical correlations is clearly observed when the wavepackets of two photons are completely overlapped, and this effect varies with the degree of overlapping. The results of our experiment substantiate the statistical correlation in a simple way. Experiment reported here can also be regarded as another kind of two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, occurs in the polarization degree of freedom of photon.

Deterministic remote preparation of arbitrary photon polarization states

We propose a deterministic remote state preparation scheme for photon polarization qubit states, where entanglement, local operations and classical communication are used. By consuming one maximally entangled state and two classical bits, an arbitrary (either pure or mixed) qubit state can be prepared deterministically at a remote location. We experimentally demonstrate the scheme by remotely preparing 12 pure states and 6 mixed states. The fidelities between the desired and achieved states are all higher than 0.99 and have an average of 0.9947.

Like-sign Di-lepton Signals in Higgsless Models at the LHC

We study the potential LHC discovery of the Z1 KK gauge boson unitarizing longitudinal W+W- scattering amplitude. In particular, we explore the decay mode Z1->t tbar along with Z1-> W+W- without specifying the branching fractions. We propose to exploit the associated production pp-> W Z1, and select the final state of like-sign dileptons plus multijets and large missing energy. We conclude that it is possible to observe the Z1 resonance at a 5 sigma level with an integrated luminosity of 100 inverse fb at the LHC upto 650 GeV for a dominant WW channel, and 560 GeV for a dominant ttbar channel.

Molecular Scale Imaging with a Smooth Superlens

We demonstrate a smooth and low loss silver (Ag) optical superlens capable of resolving features at 1/12th of the illumination wavelength with high fidelity. This is made possible by utilizing state-of-the-art nanoimprint technology and intermediate wetting layer of germanium (Ge) for the growth of flat silver films with surface roughness at sub-nanometer scales. Our measurement of the resolved lines of 30nm half-pitch shows a full-width at half-maximum better than 37nm, in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The development of this unique optical superlens lead promise to parallel imaging and nanofabrication in a single snapshot, a feat that are not yet available with other nanoscale imaging techniques such as atomic force microscope or scanning electron microscope.

Lipschitzness of *-homomorphisms between C*-metric algebras

A C*-metric algebra consists of a unital C*-algebra and a Leibniz Lip-norm on the C*-algebra. We show that if the Lip-norms concerned are lower semicontinuous, then any unital *-homomorphism from a C*-metric algebra to another one is necessarily Lipschitz. It results that the free product of two Lipschitz unital *-homomorphisms between C*-metric algebras coming from *-filtrations is still a Lipschitz unital *-homomorphism.

Analysis of Firing Behaviors in Networks of Pulse-Coupled Oscillators with Delayed Excitatory Coupling

For networks of pulse-coupled oscillators with delayed excitatory coupling, we analyze the firing behaviors depending on coupling strength and transmission delay. The parameter space consisting of strength and delay is partitioned into two regions. For one region, we derive a low bound of interspike intervals, from which three firing properties are obtained. However, this bound and these properties would no longer hold for another region. Finally, we show the different synchronization behaviors for networks with parameters in the two regions.

LRSA: A new computational method for analyzing time course microarray data

Motivation: Time course data obtained from biological samples subject to specific treatments can be very useful for revealing complex and novel biological phenomena. Although an increasing number of time course microarray datasets becomes available, most of them contain few biological replicates and time points. So far there are few computational methods that can effectively reveal differentially expressed genes and their patterns in such data. Results: We have proposed a new two-step nonparametric statistical procedure, LRSA, to reveal differentially expressed genes and their expression trends in temporal microarray data. We have also employed external controls as a surrogate to estimate false discovery rates and thus to guide the discovery of differentially expressed genes. Our results showed that LRSA reveals substantially more differentially expressed genes and have much lower than two other methods, STEM and ANOVA, in both real data and the simulated data. Our computational results are confirmed using real-time PCRs. Contact: wuw2@upmc.edu

Structure-dependent exchange in the organic magnets Cu(II)Pc and Mn(II)Pc

We study exchange couplings in the organic magnets copper(II) phthalocyanine (Cu(II)Pc) and manganese(II) phthalocyanine (Mn(II)Pc) by a combination of Green's function perturbation theory and \textsl{ab initio} density-functional theory (DFT). Based on the indirect exchange model our perturbation-theory calculation of Cu(II)Pc qualitatively agrees with the experimental observations. DFT calculations performed on Cu(II)Pc dimer show a very good quantitative agreement with exchange couplings that we extract by using a global fitting for the magnetization measurements to a spin-1/2 Bonner-Fisher model. These two methods give us remarkably consistent trends for the exchange couplings in Cu(II)Pc when changing the stacking angles. The situation is more complex for Mn(II)Pc owing to the competition between super-exchange and indirect exchange.

Unparticle Physics and A_{FB}^b on the Z pole

An attempt has been made to address the 3σanomaly of the forward-backward asymmetry of b quark in LEP data via an unparticle sector. For most part of the parameter space except certain particular regions, the anomaly could not be explained away plausibly, when constraints from other LEP observables are taken into account.

Assertion-Based Design Exploration of DVS in Network Processor Architectures

With the scaling of technology and higher requirements on performance and functionality, power dissipation is becoming one of the major design considerations in the development of network processors. In this paper, we use an assertion-based methodology for system-level power/performance analysis to study two dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) techniques, traffic-based DVS and execution-based DVS, in a network processor model. Using the automatically generated distribution analyzers, we analyze the power and performance distributions and study their trade-offs for the two DVS policies with different parameter settings such as threshold values and window sizes. We discuss the optimal configurations of the two DVS policies under different design requirements. By a set of experiments, we show that the assertion-based trace analysis methodology is an efficient tool that can help a designer easily compare and study optimal architectural configurations in a large design space.

Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy of Photonic Metamaterials

We have obtained spectra of second-harmonic generation, third harmonic generation, and four-wave mixing from a fishnet metamaterial around its magnetic resonance. The resonant behaviors are distinctly different from those for ordinary materials. They result from the fact that the resonance is plasmonic, and its enhancement appears through the local field in the nanostructure.

Continuation of solutions of coupled dynamical systems

Recently, the synchronization of coupled dynamical systems has been widely studied. Synchronization is referred to as a process wherein two (or many) dynamical systems are adjusted to a common behavior as time goes to infinity, due to coupling or forcing. Therefore, before discussing synchronization, a basic problem on continuation of the solution must be solved: For given initial conditions, can the solution of coupled dynamical systems be extended to the infinite interval $[0,+\infty)$? In this paper, we propose a general model of coupled dynamical systems, which includes previously studied systems as special cases, and prove that under the assumption of QUAD, the solution of the general model exists on $[0,+\infty)$.

Modulation of Negative Index Metamaterials in the Near-IR Range

Optical modulation of the effective refractive properties of a "fishnet" metamaterial with a Ag/Si/Ag heterostructure is demonstrated in the near-IR range and the associated fast dynamics of negative refractive index is studied by pump-probe method. Photo excitation of the amorphous Si layer at visible wavelength and corresponding modification of its optical parameters is found to be responsible for the observed modulation of negative refractive index in near-IR.

Desynchronization of pulse-coupled oscillators with delayed excitatory coupling

Collective behavior of pulse-coupled oscillators has been investigated widely. As an example of pulse-coupled networks, fireflies display many kinds of flashing patterns. Mirollo and Strogatz (1990) proposed a pulse-coupled oscillator model to explain the synchronization of South East Asian fireflies ({\itshape Pteroptyx malaccae}). However, transmission delays were not considered in their model. In fact, the presence of transmission delays can lead to desychronization. In this paper, pulse-coupled oscillator networks with delayed excitatory coupling are studied. Our main result is that under reasonable assumptions, pulse-coupled oscillator networks with delayed excitatory coupling can not achieve complete synchronization, which can explain why another species of fireflies ({\itshape Photinus pyralis}) rarely synchronizes flashing. Finally, two numerical simulations are given. In the first simulation, we illustrate that even if all the initial phases are very close to each other, there could still be big variations in the times to process the pulses in the pipeline. It implies that asymptotical synchronization typically also cannot be achieved. In the second simulation, we exhibit a phenomenon of clustering synchronization.

On the Capacity of Multiple Access Channels with State Information and Feedback

In this paper, the multiple access channel (MAC) with channel state is analyzed in a scenario where a) the channel state is known non-causally to the transmitters and b) there is perfect causal feedback from the receiver to the transmitters. An achievable region and an outer bound are found for a discrete memoryless MAC that extend existing results, bringing together ideas from the two separate domains of MAC with state and MAC with feedback. Although this achievable region does not match the outer bound in general, special cases where they meet are identified. In the case of a Gaussian MAC, a specialized achievable region is found by using a combination of dirty paper coding and a generalization of the Schalkwijk-Kailath, Ozarow and Merhav-Weissman schemes, and this region is found to be capacity achieving. Specifically, it is shown that additive Gaussian interference that is known non-causally to the transmitter causes no loss in capacity for the Gaussian MAC with feedback.

On the Capacity of Interference Channels with Degraded Message sets

This paper is motivated by a sensor network on a correlated field where nearby sensors share information, and can thus assist rather than interfere with one another. A special class of two-user Gaussian interference channels (IFCs) is considered where one of the two transmitters knows both the messages to be conveyed to the two receivers (called the IFC with degraded message sets). Both achievability and converse arguments are provided for this scenario for a class of discrete memoryless channels with weak interference. For the case of the Gaussian weak interference channel with degraded message sets, optimality of Gaussian inputs is also shown, resulting in the capacity region of this channel.
