Seen to Unseen: Exploring Compositional Generalization of Multi-Attribute Controllable Dialogue Generation

Existing controllable dialogue generation work focuses on the single-attribute control and lacks generalization capability to out-of-distribution multiple attribute combinations. In this paper, we explore the compositional generalization for multi-attribute controllable dialogue generation where a model can learn from seen attribute values and generalize to unseen combinations. We propose a prompt-based disentangled controllable dialogue generation model, DCG. It learns attribute concept composition by generating attribute-oriented prompt vectors and uses a disentanglement loss to disentangle different attributes for better generalization. Besides, we design a unified reference-free evaluation framework for multiple attributes with different levels of granularities. Experiment results on two benchmarks prove the effectiveness of our method and the evaluation metric.

T5-SR: A Unified Seq-to-Seq Decoding Strategy for Semantic Parsing

Translating natural language queries into SQLs in a seq2seq manner has attracted much attention recently. However, compared with abstract-syntactic-tree-based SQL generation, seq2seq semantic parsers face much more challenges, including poor quality on schematical information prediction and poor semantic coherence between natural language queries and SQLs. This paper analyses the above difficulties and proposes a seq2seq-oriented decoding strategy called SR, which includes a new intermediate representation SSQL and a reranking method with score re-estimator to solve the above obstacles respectively. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed techniques and T5-SR-3b achieves new state-of-the-art results on the Spider dataset.

HUB: Guiding Learned Optimizers with Continuous Prompt Tuning

Learned optimizers are a crucial component of meta-learning. Recent advancements in scalable learned optimizers have demonstrated their superior performance over hand-designed optimizers in various tasks. However, certain characteristics of these models, such as an unstable learning curve, limited ability to handle unseen tasks and network architectures, difficult-to-control behaviours, and poor performance in fine-tuning tasks impede their widespread adoption. To tackle the issue of generalization in scalable learned optimizers, we propose a hybrid-update-based (HUB) optimization strategy inspired by recent advancements in hard prompt tuning and result selection techniques used in large language and vision models. This approach can be easily applied to any task that involves hand-designed or learned optimizer. By incorporating hand-designed optimizers as the second component in our hybrid approach, we are able to retain the benefits of learned optimizers while stabilizing the training process and, more importantly, improving testing performance. We validate our design through a total of 17 tasks, consisting of thirteen training from scratch and four fine-tuning settings. These tasks vary in model sizes, architectures, or dataset sizes, and the competing optimizers are hyperparameter-tuned. We outperform all competitors in 94% of the tasks with better testing performance. Furthermore, we conduct a theoretical analysis to examine the potential impact of our hybrid strategy on the behaviours and inherited traits of learned optimizers.

PreQuant: A Task-agnostic Quantization Approach for Pre-trained Language Models

While transformer-based pre-trained language models (PLMs) have dominated a number of NLP applications, these models are heavy to deploy and expensive to use. Therefore, effectively compressing large-scale PLMs becomes an increasingly important problem. Quantization, which represents high-precision tensors with low-bit fix-point format, is a viable solution. However, most existing quantization methods are task-specific, requiring customized training and quantization with a large number of trainable parameters on each individual task. Inspired by the observation that the over-parameterization nature of PLMs makes it possible to freeze most of the parameters during the fine-tuning stage, in this work, we propose a novel ``quantize before fine-tuning'' framework, PreQuant, that differs from both quantization-aware training and post-training quantization. PreQuant is compatible with various quantization strategies, with outlier-aware parameter-efficient fine-tuning incorporated to correct the induced quantization error. We demonstrate the effectiveness of PreQuant on the GLUE benchmark using BERT, RoBERTa, and T5. We also provide an empirical investigation into the workflow of PreQuant, which sheds light on its efficacy.

RankCSE: Unsupervised Sentence Representations Learning via Learning to Rank

Unsupervised sentence representation learning is one of the fundamental problems in natural language processing with various downstream applications. Recently, contrastive learning has been widely adopted which derives high-quality sentence representations by pulling similar semantics closer and pushing dissimilar ones away. However, these methods fail to capture the fine-grained ranking information among the sentences, where each sentence is only treated as either positive or negative. In many real-world scenarios, one needs to distinguish and rank the sentences based on their similarities to a query sentence, e.g., very relevant, moderate relevant, less relevant, irrelevant, etc. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, RankCSE, for unsupervised sentence representation learning, which incorporates ranking consistency and ranking distillation with contrastive learning into a unified framework. In particular, we learn semantically discriminative sentence representations by simultaneously ensuring ranking consistency between two representations with different dropout masks, and distilling listwise ranking knowledge from the teacher. An extensive set of experiments are conducted on both semantic textual similarity (STS) and transfer (TR) tasks. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our approach over several state-of-the-art baselines.

MD-VQA: Multi-Dimensional Quality Assessment for UGC Live Videos

User-generated content (UGC) live videos are often bothered by various distortions during capture procedures and thus exhibit diverse visual qualities. Such source videos are further compressed and transcoded by media server providers before being distributed to end-users. Because of the flourishing of UGC live videos, effective video quality assessment (VQA) tools are needed to monitor and perceptually optimize live streaming videos in the distributing process. In this paper, we address \textbf{UGC Live VQA} problems by constructing a first-of-a-kind subjective UGC Live VQA database and developing an effective evaluation tool. Concretely, 418 source UGC videos are collected in real live streaming scenarios and 3,762 compressed ones at different bit rates are generated for the subsequent subjective VQA experiments. Based on the built database, we develop a \underline{M}ulti-\underline{D}imensional \underline{VQA} (\textbf{MD-VQA}) evaluator to measure the visual quality of UGC live videos from semantic, distortion, and motion aspects respectively. Extensive experimental results show that MD-VQA achieves state-of-the-art performance on both our UGC Live VQA database and existing compressed UGC VQA databases.

M2GNN: Metapath and Multi-interest Aggregated Graph Neural Network for Tag-based Cross-domain Recommendation

Cross-domain recommendation (CDR) is an effective way to alleviate the data sparsity problem. Content-based CDR is one of the most promising branches since most kinds of products can be described by a piece of text, especially when cold-start users or items have few interactions. However, two vital issues are still under-explored: (1) From the content modeling perspective, sufficient long-text descriptions are usually scarce in a real recommender system, more often the light-weight textual features, such as a few keywords or tags, are more accessible, which is improperly modeled by existing methods. (2) From the CDR perspective, not all inter-domain interests are helpful to infer intra-domain interests. Caused by domain-specific features, there are part of signals benefiting for recommendation in the source domain but harmful for that in the target domain. Therefore, how to distill useful interests is crucial. To tackle the above two problems, we propose a metapath and multi-interest aggregated graph neural network (M2GNN). Specifically, to model the tag-based contents, we construct a heterogeneous information network to hold the semantic relatedness between users, items, and tags in all domains. The metapath schema is predefined according to domain-specific knowledge, with one metapath for one domain. User representations are learned by GNN with a hierarchical aggregation framework, where the intra-metapath aggregation firstly filters out trivial tags and the inter-metapath aggregation further filters out useless interests. Offline experiments and online A/B tests demonstrate that M2GNN achieves significant improvements over the state-of-the-art methods and current industrial recommender system in Dianping, respectively. Further analysis shows that M2GNN offers an interpretable recommendation.

DABERT: Dual Attention Enhanced BERT for Semantic Matching

Transformer-based pre-trained language models such as BERT have achieved remarkable results in Semantic Sentence Matching. However, existing models still suffer from insufficient ability to capture subtle differences. Minor noise like word addition, deletion, and modification of sentences may cause flipped predictions. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel Dual Attention Enhanced BERT (DABERT) to enhance the ability of BERT to capture fine-grained differences in sentence pairs. DABERT comprises (1) Dual Attention module, which measures soft word matches by introducing a new dual channel alignment mechanism to model affinity and difference attention. (2) Adaptive Fusion module, this module uses attention to learn the aggregation of difference and affinity features, and generates a vector describing the matching details of sentence pairs. We conduct extensive experiments on well-studied semantic matching and robustness test datasets, and the experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposed method.

LidarGait: Benchmarking 3D Gait Recognition with Point Clouds

Video-based gait recognition has achieved impressive results in constrained scenarios. However, visual cameras neglect human 3D structure information, which limits the feasibility of gait recognition in the 3D wild world. Instead of extracting gait features from images, this work explores precise 3D gait features from point clouds and proposes a simple yet efficient 3D gait recognition framework, termed LidarGait. Our proposed approach projects sparse point clouds into depth maps to learn the representations with 3D geometry information, which outperforms existing point-wise and camera-based methods by a significant margin. Due to the lack of point cloud datasets, we built the first large-scale LiDAR-based gait recognition dataset, SUSTech1K, collected by a LiDAR sensor and an RGB camera. The dataset contains 25,239 sequences from 1,050 subjects and covers many variations, including visibility, views, occlusions, clothing, carrying, and scenes. Extensive experiments show that (1) 3D structure information serves as a significant feature for gait recognition. (2) LidarGait outperforms existing point-based and silhouette-based methods by a significant margin, while it also offers stable cross-view results. (3) The LiDAR sensor is superior to the RGB camera for gait recognition in the outdoor environment. The source code and dataset have been made available at https://lidargait.github.io.

First-principles studies of oxygen interstitial dopants in RbPbI$_3$ halide for perovskite solar cells

Recent research on perovskite solar cells has caught much attention for the application in renewable energy materials. However, the effect of external dopants on the performance of perovskite solar cell is yet to be understood properly. Oxygen atom or molecule is important dopant to influence the stability of structural, electronic and optical properties as well as the performance of perovskite solar cells. RbPbX3-type perovskites have fantastic chemical stability and good power conversion efficiency. Here for the first time, we have studied the effect of interstitial oxygen atom (O1) and molecule (O2) on the structural properties, and hence the electronic structure of RbPbI3 from first principles. A significant reduction of the band gap from ~2.6 eV to ~ 1.0 eV, which is close to the optimal band gap, has been predicted when incorporating oxygen. This could in turn be applied to improve the optical properties for harvesting light if we can control the oxygen level appropriately. In addition, an exotic metallic state has been found in our calculations for interstitial oxygen molecule when there are strong O-O, O-Pb, and O-I bonds, indicating the complex nature of oxygen-doped perovskite solar cells. The comparison between oxygen atom and molecules is consistent with the previous report about oxygen-molecule passivation of perovskite solar cells. This indicated oxygen incorporation can not only improve efficiency and stability but also facilitate the optimal band-gap engineering. Our work has therefore provided an important and timely theoretical insight to the effect of oxygen dopants in perovskite solar cells. Moreover, these results also provide theoretical foundation for further simulations such as molecular dynamics.

Blueprint of optically addressable molecular network for quantum circuit architecture

Optically connecting quantum bits can effectively reduce decoherence and facilitate long-distance communication. Optically addressable spin-bearing molecules have been demonstrated to have a good potential for quantum computing. In this report optically induced exchange interactions and spin dynamics, which are inherently important for spin-based quantum computing, have been calculated for a bi-radical - a potential quantum computing circuit unit. Consistent with the previous experimental observation of spin coherence induced by optical excitation, our work demonstrated an optically driven quantum gate operation scheme, implying a great potential of molecular quantum-circuit network. A blueprint of quantum circuit, integrating two-dimensional molecular network and programmable nano-photonics, both of which have been under extensive investigations and rather mature, was proposed. We thus envisage computational exploration of chemical database to identify suitable candidates for molecular spin quantum bit and coupler, which could be optimally integrated with nano-photonic devices to realize quantum circuit. The work presented here would therefore open up a new direction to explore 'Click Chemistry' for quantum technology.

Multi-task Transformer with Relation-attention and Type-attention for Named Entity Recognition

Named entity recognition (NER) is an important research problem in natural language processing. There are three types of NER tasks, including flat, nested and discontinuous entity recognition. Most previous sequential labeling models are task-specific, while recent years have witnessed the rising of generative models due to the advantage of unifying all NER tasks into the seq2seq model framework. Although achieving promising performance, our pilot studies demonstrate that existing generative models are ineffective at detecting entity boundaries and estimating entity types. This paper proposes a multi-task Transformer, which incorporates an entity boundary detection task into the named entity recognition task. More concretely, we achieve entity boundary detection by classifying the relations between tokens within the sentence. To improve the accuracy of entity-type mapping during decoding, we adopt an external knowledge base to calculate the prior entity-type distributions and then incorporate the information into the model via the self and cross-attention mechanisms. We perform experiments on an extensive set of NER benchmarks, including two flat, three nested, and three discontinuous NER datasets. Experimental results show that our approach considerably improves the generative NER model's performance.

Time-aware Multiway Adaptive Fusion Network for Temporal Knowledge Graph Question Answering

Knowledge graphs (KGs) have received increasing attention due to its wide applications on natural language processing. However, its use case on temporal question answering (QA) has not been well-explored. Most of existing methods are developed based on pre-trained language models, which might not be capable to learn \emph{temporal-specific} presentations of entities in terms of temporal KGQA task. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel \textbf{T}ime-aware \textbf{M}ultiway \textbf{A}daptive (\textbf{TMA}) fusion network. Inspired by the step-by-step reasoning behavior of humans. For each given question, TMA first extracts the relevant concepts from the KG, and then feeds them into a multiway adaptive module to produce a \emph{temporal-specific} representation of the question. This representation can be incorporated with the pre-trained KG embedding to generate the final prediction. Empirical results verify that the proposed model achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art models in the benchmark dataset. Notably, the Hits@1 and Hits@10 results of TMA on the CronQuestions dataset's complex questions are absolutely improved by 24\% and 10\% compared to the best-performing baseline. Furthermore, we also show that TMA employing an adaptive fusion mechanism can provide interpretability by analyzing the proportion of information in question representations.

Dual Path Modeling for Semantic Matching by Perceiving Subtle Conflicts

Transformer-based pre-trained models have achieved great improvements in semantic matching. However, existing models still suffer from insufficient ability to capture subtle differences. The modification, addition and deletion of words in sentence pairs may make it difficult for the model to predict their relationship. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel Dual Path Modeling Framework to enhance the model's ability to perceive subtle differences in sentence pairs by separately modeling affinity and difference semantics. Based on dual-path modeling framework we design the Dual Path Modeling Network (DPM-Net) to recognize semantic relations. And we conduct extensive experiments on 10 well-studied semantic matching and robustness test datasets, and the experimental results show that our proposed method achieves consistent improvements over baselines.

Photocurrent imaging of hybrid polaritons in graphene based heterostructures

Photocurrent is arising as a powerful tool for detecting in-plane collective excitations in hybrid polariton systems. In this paper, based on the intrinsic optoelectric response of graphene, photocurrent imaging of in-plane plasmons from each graphene layer is presented in a hybrid graphene-graphene heterostructure. In combination with near-field optical signals which detect plasmons above the sample, three dimensional detection of hybrid plasmons is demonstrated. Especially, only an electronic boundary is necessary for the electrical detection of hybrid plasmons, which acts as both the photocurrent junction and plasmon reflector. Our studies would promote electrical studies of polariton related physical phenomena and pave the way towards all-electrical nano-optical processing.

Meta-Learning Triplet Network with Adaptive Margins for Few-Shot Named Entity Recognition

Meta-learning methods have been widely used in few-shot named entity recognition (NER), especially prototype-based methods. However, the Other(O) class is difficult to be represented by a prototype vector because there are generally a large number of samples in the class that have miscellaneous semantics. To solve the problem, we propose MeTNet, which generates prototype vectors for entity types only but not O-class. We design an improved triplet network to map samples and prototype vectors into a low-dimensional space that is easier to be classified and propose an adaptive margin for each entity type. The margin plays as a radius and controls a region with adaptive size in the low-dimensional space. Based on the regions, we propose a new inference procedure to predict the label of a query instance. We conduct extensive experiments in both in-domain and cross-domain settings to show the superiority of MeTNet over other state-of-the-art methods. In particular, we release a Chinese few-shot NER dataset FEW-COMM extracted from a well-known e-commerce platform. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Chinese few-shot NER dataset. All the datasets and codes are provided at https://github.com/hccngu/MeTNet.

GRB 220408B: A Three-Episode Burst from a Precessing Jet

Jet precession has previously been proposed to explain the apparently repeating features in the light curves of a few gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this {\it Letter}, we further apply the precession model to a bright GRB 220408B by examining both its temporal and spectral consistency with the predictions of the model. As one of the recently confirmed GRBs observed by our GRID CubeSat mission, GRB 220408B is noteworthy as it exhibits three apparently similar emission episodes. Furthermore, the similarities are reinforced by their strong temporal correlations and similar features in terms of spectral evolution and spectral lags. Our analysis demonstrates that these features can be well explained by the modulated emission of a Fast-Rise-Exponential-Decay (FRED) shape light curve intrinsically produced by a precessing jet with a precession period of $18.4 \pm 0.2$ seconds, a nutation period of $11.1 \pm 0.2$ seconds and viewed off-axis. This study provides a straightforward explanation for the complex yet similar multi-episode GRB light curves.

FFHR: Fully and Flexible Hyperbolic Representation for Knowledge Graph Completion

Learning hyperbolic embeddings for knowledge graph (KG) has gained increasing attention due to its superiority in capturing hierarchies. However, some important operations in hyperbolic space still lack good definitions, making existing methods unable to fully leverage the merits of hyperbolic space. Specifically, they suffer from two main limitations: 1) existing Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) methods in hyperbolic space rely on tangent space approximation, which would incur approximation error in representation learning, and 2) due to the lack of inner product operation definition in hyperbolic space, existing methods can only measure the plausibility of facts (links) with hyperbolic distance, which is difficult to capture complex data patterns. In this work, we contribute: 1) a Full Poincaré Multi-relational GCN that achieves graph information propagation in hyperbolic space without requiring any approximation, and 2) a hyperbolic generalization of Euclidean inner product that is beneficial to capture both hierarchical and complex patterns. On this basis, we further develop a \textbf{F}ully and \textbf{F}lexible \textbf{H}yperbolic \textbf{R}epresentation framework (\textbf{FFHR}) that is able to transfer recent Euclidean-based advances to hyperbolic space. We demonstrate it by instantiating FFHR with four representative KGC methods. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets validate the superiority of our FFHRs over their Euclidean counterparts as well as state-of-the-art hyperbolic embedding methods.
