Stabilized Sparse Ordinal Regression for Medical Risk Stratification

The recent wide adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) presents great opportunities and challenges for data mining. The EMR data is largely temporal, often noisy, irregular and high dimensional. This paper constructs a novel ordinal regression framework for predicting medical risk stratification from EMR. First, a conceptual view of EMR as a temporal image is constructed to extract a diverse set of features. Second, ordinal modeling is applied for predicting cumulative or progressive risk. The challenges are building a transparent predictive model that works with a large number of weakly predictive features, and at the same time, is stable against resampling variations. Our solution employs sparsity methods that are stabilized through domain-specific feature interaction networks. We introduces two indices that measure the model stability against data resampling. Feature networks are used to generate two multivariate Gaussian priors with sparse precision matrices (the Laplacian and Random Walk). We apply the framework on a large short-term suicide risk prediction problem and demonstrate that our methods outperform clinicians to a large-margin, discover suicide risk factors that conform with mental health knowledge, and produce models with enhanced stability.

Quantum correlations in bulk properties of solids obtained from neutron scattering

We demonstrate that inelastic neutron scattering technique can be used to indirectly detect and measure the macroscopic quantum correlations quantified by both entanglement and discord in a quantum magnetic material, VODPO4 . 1D2O. The amount of quantum correlations is obtained 2 by analyzing the neutron scattering data of magnetic excitations in isolated V4+ spin dimers. Our quantitative analysis shows that the critical temperature of this material can reach as high as Tc = 82.5 K, where quantum entanglement drops to zero. Significantly, quantum discord can even survive at Tc = 300 K and may be used in room temperature quantum devices. Taking into account the spin-orbit (SO) coupling, we also predict theoretically that entanglement can be significantly enhanced and the critical temperature Tc increases with the strength of spin-orbit coupling.

Well-posedness for the FENE dumbbell model of polymetric flows in Besov spaces

In this paper we mainly investigate the Cauchy problem of the finite extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbell model with dimension $d\geq2$. We first proved the local well-posedness for the FENE model in Besov spaces by using the Littlewood-Paley theory. Then by an accurate estimate we get a blow-up criterion. Moreover, if the initial data is perturbation around equilibrium, we obtain a global existence result. Our obtained results generalize recent results in [8].

Unsupervised Pretraining Encourages Moderate-Sparseness

It is well known that direct training of deep neural networks will generally lead to poor results. A major progress in recent years is the invention of various pretraining methods to initialize network parameters and it was shown that such methods lead to good prediction performance. However, the reason for the success of pretraining has not been fully understood, although it was argued that regularization and better optimization play certain roles. This paper provides another explanation for the effectiveness of pretraining, where we show pretraining leads to a sparseness of hidden unit activation in the resulting neural networks. The main reason is that the pretraining models can be interpreted as an adaptive sparse coding. Compared to deep neural network with sigmoid function, our experimental results on MNIST and Birdsong further support this sparseness observation.

On efficient dimension reduction with respect to a statistical functional of interest

We introduce a new sufficient dimension reduction framework that targets a statistical functional of interest, and propose an efficient estimator for the semiparametric estimation problems of this type. The statistical functional covers a wide range of applications, such as conditional mean, conditional variance and conditional quantile. We derive the general forms of the efficient score and efficient information as well as their specific forms for three important statistical functionals: the linear functional, the composite linear functional and the implicit functional. In conjunction with our theoretical analysis, we also propose a class of one-step Newton-Raphson estimators and show by simulations that they substantially outperform existing methods. Finally, we apply the new method to construct the central mean and central variance subspaces for a data set involving the physical measurements and age of abalones, which exhibits a strong pattern of heteroscedasticity.

Formation of Nanofoam carbon and re-emergence of Superconductivity in compressed CaC6

Pressure can tune material's electronic properties and control its quantum state, making some systems present disconnected superconducting region as observed in iron chalcogenides and heavy fermion CeCu2Si2. For CaC6 superconductor (Tc of 11.5 K), applying pressure first Tc increases and then suppresses and the superconductivity of this compound is eventually disappeared at about 18 GPa. Here, we report a theoretical finding of the re-emergence of superconductivity in heavily compressed CaC6. The predicted phase III (space group Pmmn) with formation of carbon nanofoam is found to be stable at wide pressure range with a Tc up to 14.7 K at 78 GPa. Diamond-like carbon structure is adhered to the phase IV (Cmcm) for compressed CaC6 after 126 GPa, which has bad metallic behavior, indicating again departure from superconductivity. Re-emerged superconductivity in compressed CaC6 paves a new way to design new-type superconductor by inserting metal into nanoporous host lattice.

Hurwitz-Hodge integral identities from the cut-and-join equation

In this paper, we present some Hurwitz-Hodge integral identities which are derived from the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation for the orbifold Hurwitz numbers. As an application, we prove a conjecture on Hurwitz-Hodge integral proposed by J. Zhou in 2008.

Single-layer MoS2 as efficient photocatalyst

The potential application of the single-layer MoS2 as photocatalyst was revealed in this work based on first-principles calculations. It is found that the pristine single-layer MoS2 is a good candidate for photocatalyst, and its catalyzing ability can be tuned by the applied mechanical strain. Furthermore, the p-type doping could improve the catalyzing ability more efficiently: first, the p-type doping makes the direct transition of electron from valence band maximum (VBM) to conduction band minimum (CBM) viable; second, it separates the water splitting reaction sites by having reduction in Mo sites and oxidation in P dopant sites; third, it improves the efficiency by equalizing the reducing power Δ1 and oxidizing power Δ2, as well as by enhancing the light absorption in long wavelength end of the visible light. Thus enables the single-layer MoS2 to be a efficient visible-light photocatalyst.

Efficient surface second-harmonic generation in slot micro/nano-fibers

We propose to use slot micro/nano-fiber (SMNF) to enhance the second-harmonic generation based on surface dipole nonlinearity. The slot structure is simple and promising to manufacture with high accuracy and reliability by mature micromachining techniques. Light field can be enhanced and confined, and the surface area can be increased in the sub-wavelength low-refractive-index air slot. The maximum conversion efficiency of the SMNFs in our calculations is about 24 times higher than that of circular micro/nano-fibers. It is promising to provide a competing platform for a new class of fiber-based ultra-tiny light sources spanning the UV- to the mid-infrared spectrum.

Theoretical and Experimental Status of Magnetic Monopoles

The Tevatron has inspired new interest in the subject of magnetic monopoles. First there was the 1998 D0 limit on the virtual production of monopoles, based on the theory of Ginzberg and collaborators. In 2000 the first results from an experiment (Fermilab E882) searching for real magnetically charged particles bound to elements from the CDF and D0 detectors were reported. This also required new developments in theory. The status of the experimental limits on monopole masses will be discussed, as well as the limitation of the theory of magnetic charge at present.
