The Road Towards 6G: A Comprehensive Survey

As of today, the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication system has been rolled out in many countries and the number of 5G subscribers already reaches a very large scale. It is time for academia and industry to shift their attention towards the next generation. At this crossroad, an overview of the current state of the art and a vision of future communications are definitely of interest. This article thus aims to provide a comprehensive survey to draw a picture of the sixth generation (6G) system in terms of drivers, use cases, usage scenarios, requirements, key performance indicators (KPIs), architecture, and enabling technologies. First, we attempt to answer the question of "Is there any need for 6G?" by shedding light on its key driving factors, in which we predict the explosive growth of mobile traffic until 2030, and envision potential use cases and usage scenarios. Second, the technical requirements of 6G are discussed and compared with those of 5G with respect to a set of KPIs in a quantitative manner. Third, the state-of-the-art 6G research efforts and activities from representative institutions and countries are summarized, and a tentative roadmap of definition, specification, standardization, and regulation is projected. Then, we identify a dozen of potential technologies and introduce their principles, advantages, challenges, and open research issues. Finally, the conclusions are drawn to paint a picture of "What 6G may look like?". This survey is intended to serve as an enlightening guideline to spur interests and further investigations for subsequent research and development of 6G communications systems.

ACNe: Attentive Context Normalization for Robust Permutation-Equivariant Learning

Many problems in computer vision require dealing with sparse, unordered data in the form of point clouds. Permutation-equivariant networks have become a popular solution-they operate on individual data points with simple perceptrons and extract contextual information with global pooling. This can be achieved with a simple normalization of the feature maps, a global operation that is unaffected by the order. In this paper, we propose Attentive Context Normalization (ACN), a simple yet effective technique to build permutation-equivariant networks robust to outliers. Specifically, we show how to normalize the feature maps with weights that are estimated within the network, excluding outliers from this normalization. We use this mechanism to leverage two types of attention: local and global-by combining them, our method is able to find the essential data points in high-dimensional space to solve a given task. We demonstrate through extensive experiments that our approach, which we call Attentive Context Networks (ACNe), provides a significant leap in performance compared to the state-of-the-art on camera pose estimation, robust fitting, and point cloud classification under noise and outliers. A perimeter-decreasing and area-conserving algorithm for surface diffusion flow of curves

A fully discrete finite element method, based on a new weak formulation and a new time-stepping scheme, is proposed for the surface diffusion flow of closed curves in the two-dimensional plane. It is proved that the proposed method can preserve two geometric structures simultaneously at the discrete level, i.e., the perimeter of the curve decreases in time while the area enclosed by the curve is conserved. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the convergence of the proposed method and the effectiveness of the method in preserving the two geometric structures.

Back-n White Neutron Source at CSNS and its Applications

Back-streaming neutrons from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) that emit through the incoming proton channel were exploited to build a white neutron beam facility (the so-called Back-n white neutron source), which was completed in March 2018. The Back-n neutron beam is very intense, at approximately 2*10^7 n/cm^2/s at 55 m from the target, and has a nominal proton beam with a power of 100 kW in the CSNS-I phase and a kinetic energy of 1.6 GeV and a thick tungsten target in multiple slices with modest moderation from the cooling water through the slices. In addition, the excellent energy spectrum spanning from 0.5 eV to 200 MeV, and a good time resolution related to the time-of-flight measurements make it a typical white neutron source for nuclear data measurements; its overall performance is among that of the best white neutron sources in the world. Equipped with advanced spectrometers, detectors, and application utilities, the Back-n facility can serve wide applications, with a focus on neutron-induced cross-section measurements. This article presents an overview of the neutron beam characteristics, the experimental setups, and the ongoing applications at Back-n.

Implementation of OpenAirInterface-based real-world channel measurement for evaluating wireless transmission algorithms

The fourth-generation Wireless Technology (4G) has been adopted by all major operators in the world and has already ruled the cellular landscape for around a decade. A lot of researches and new technologies are being considered as potential elements contributing to the next generation wireless communication (5G). The lack of realistic and flexible experimentation platforms for collecting real communication data has limited and slowed the landing of new approaches. Software Defined Radio (SDR) can provide flexible, upgradable, and long lifetime radio equipment for the wireless communications infrastructure, which can also provide more flexible and possibly cheaper multi-standard-terminals for end users. By altering the open-source code individually, we can freely perform the real value measurement. This paper provides a real Long Term Evolution (LTE) channel measurement method based on the OpenAirInterface (OAI) for the evaluation of the channel prediction algorithm. Firstly, the experimentation platform will be established by using OAI, Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP), and commercial User Equipment (UE). Then, some source codes of OAI are analyzed and changed, so that the real-time over-the-air channel measurement can be achieved. The results from the measurement are then trained and tested on the channel prediction algorithm. The results of the test illustrate that the implemented channel measurement method can meet the need for algorithms' verification and can be further extended for more development of algorithms.

1st Place Solution to VisDA-2020: Bias Elimination for Domain Adaptive Pedestrian Re-identification

This paper presents our proposed methods for domain adaptive pedestrian re-identification (Re-ID) task in Visual Domain Adaptation Challenge (VisDA-2020). Considering the large gap between the source domain and target domain, we focused on solving two biases that influenced the performance on domain adaptive pedestrian Re-ID and proposed a two-stage training procedure. At the first stage, a baseline model is trained with images transferred from source domain to target domain and from single camera to multiple camera styles. Then we introduced a domain adaptation framework to train the model on source data and target data simultaneously. Different pseudo label generation strategies are adopted to continuously improve the discriminative ability of the model. Finally, with multiple models ensembled and additional post processing approaches adopted, our methods achieve 76.56% mAP and 84.25% rank-1 on the test set. A pipeline for fair comparison of graph neural networks in node classification tasks

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have been investigated for potential applicability in multiple fields that employ graph data. However, there are no standard training settings to ensure fair comparisons among new methods, including different model architectures and data augmentation techniques. We introduce a standard, reproducible benchmark to which the same training settings can be applied for node classification. For this benchmark, we constructed 9 datasets, including both small- and medium-scale datasets from different fields, and 7 different models. We design a k-fold model assessment strategy for small datasets and a standard set of model training procedures for all datasets, enabling a standard experimental pipeline for GNNs to help ensure fair model architecture comparisons. We use node2vec and Laplacian eigenvectors to perform data augmentation to investigate how input features affect the performance of the models. We find topological information is important for node classification tasks. Increasing the number of model layers does not improve the performance except on the PATTERN and CLUSTER datasets, in which the graphs are not connected. Data augmentation is highly useful, especially using node2vec in the baseline, resulting in a substantial baseline performance improvement.

DeRF: Decomposed Radiance Fields

With the advent of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF), neural networks can now render novel views of a 3D scene with quality that fools the human eye. Yet, generating these images is very computationally intensive, limiting their applicability in practical scenarios. In this paper, we propose a technique based on spatial decomposition capable of mitigating this issue. Our key observation is that there are diminishing returns in employing larger (deeper and/or wider) networks. Hence, we propose to spatially decompose a scene and dedicate smaller networks for each decomposed part. When working together, these networks can render the whole scene. This allows us near-constant inference time regardless of the number of decomposed parts. Moreover, we show that a Voronoi spatial decomposition is preferable for this purpose, as it is provably compatible with the Painter's Algorithm for efficient and GPU-friendly rendering. Our experiments show that for real-world scenes, our method provides up to 3x more efficient inference than NeRF (with the same rendering quality), or an improvement of up to 1.0~dB in PSNR (for the same inference cost).

Comparison of proton shower developments in the BGO calorimeter of the Dark Matter Particle Explorer between GEANT4 and FLUKA simulations

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a satellite-borne detector for high-energy cosmic rays and $γ$-rays. To fully understand the detector performance and obtain reliable physical results, extensive simulations of the detector are necessary. The simulations are particularly important for the data analysis of cosmic ray nuclei, which relies closely on the hadronic and nuclear interactions of particles in the detector material. Widely adopted simulation softwares include the GEANT4 and FLUKA, both of which have been implemented for the DAMPE simulation tool. Here we describe the simulation tool of DAMPE and compare the results of proton shower properties in the calorimeter from the two simulation softwares. Such a comparison gives an estimate of the most significant uncertainties of our proton spectral analysis.

Giant Anomalous Hall Effect due to Double-Degenerate Quasi Flat Bands

We propose a novel approach to achieve giant AHE in materials with flat bands (FBs). FBs are accompanied by small electronic bandwidths, which consequently increases the momentum separation ($K$) within pair of Weyl points and thus the integrated Berry curvature. Starting from a simple model with a single pair of Weyl nodes, we demonstrated the increase of $K$ and AHE by decreasing bandwidth. It is further expanded to a realistic pyrochlore lattice model with characteristic double degenerated FBs, where we discovered a giant AHE while maximizing the $K$ with nearly vanishing band dispersion of FBs. We identify that such model system can be realized in both pyrochlore and spinel compounds based on first-principles calculations, validating our theoretical model and providing a feasible platform for experimental exploration.

Ferromagnetic phase of spinel compound MgV$_2$O$_4$ and its spintronics properties

Spinel compound, MgV$_2$O$_4$, known as a highly frustrated magnet has been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically for its exotic quantum magnetic states. However, due to its intrinsic insulating nature in its antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, its realistic applications in spintronics are quite limited. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we examine the ferromagnetic (FM) phase of MgV$_2$O$_4$, which was found to host three-dimensional flat band (FB) right near the Fermi level, consequently yielding a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE, $σ\approx 670\,Ω^{-1}\cdot cm^{-1}$). Our calculations suggest that the half-metallicity feature of MgV$_2$O$_4$ is preserved even after interfacing with MgO due to the excellent lattice matching, which could be a promising spin filtering material for spintronics applications. Lastly, we explore experimental feasibility of stabilizing this FM phase through strain and doping engineering. Our study suggests that experimentally accessible amount of hole doping might induce a AFM-FM phase transition.

SMAP: Single-Shot Multi-Person Absolute 3D Pose Estimation

Recovering multi-person 3D poses with absolute scales from a single RGB image is a challenging problem due to the inherent depth and scale ambiguity from a single view. Addressing this ambiguity requires to aggregate various cues over the entire image, such as body sizes, scene layouts, and inter-person relationships. However, most previous methods adopt a top-down scheme that first performs 2D pose detection and then regresses the 3D pose and scale for each detected person individually, ignoring global contextual cues. In this paper, we propose a novel system that first regresses a set of 2.5D representations of body parts and then reconstructs the 3D absolute poses based on these 2.5D representations with a depth-aware part association algorithm. Such a single-shot bottom-up scheme allows the system to better learn and reason about the inter-person depth relationship, improving both 3D and 2D pose estimation. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the CMU Panoptic and MuPoTS-3D datasets and is applicable to in-the-wild videos.

A set of efficient methods to generate high-dimensional binary data with specified correlation structures

High dimensional correlated binary data arise in many areas, such as observed genetic variations in biomedical research. Data simulation can help researchers evaluate efficiency and explore properties of different computational and statistical methods. Also, some statistical methods, such as Monte-Carlo methods, rely on data simulation. Lunn and Davies (1998) proposed linear time complexity methods to generate correlated binary variables with three common correlation structures. However, it is infeasible to specify unequal probabilities in their methods. In this manuscript, we introduce several computationally efficient algorithms that generate high-dimensional binary data with specified correlation structures and unequal probabilities. Our algorithms have linear time complexity with respect to the dimension for three commonly studied correlation structures, namely exchangeable, decaying-product and K-dependent correlation structures. In addition, we extend our algorithms to generate binary data of general non-negative correlation matrices with quadratic time complexity. We provide an R package, CorBin, to implement our simulation methods. Compared to the existing packages for binary data generation, the time cost to generate a 100-dimensional binary vector with the common correlation structures and general correlation matrices can be reduced up to $10^5$ folds and $10^3$ folds, respectively, and the efficiency can be further improved with the increase of dimensions. The R package CorBin is available on CRAN at https://cran.r-project.org/.

Three Numerical Eigensolvers for 3-D Cavity Resonators Filled With Anisotropic and Nonconductive Media

This paper mainly investigates the classic resonant cavity problem with anisotropic and nonconductive media, which is a linear vector Maxwell's eigenvalue problem. The finite element method based on edge element of the lowest-order and standard linear element is used to solve this type of 3-D closed cavity problem. In order to eliminate spurious zero modes in the numerical simulation, the divergence-free condition supported by Gauss' law is enforced in a weak sense. After the finite element discretization, the generalized eigenvalue problem with a linear constraint condition needs to be solved. Penalty method, augmented method and projection method are applied to solve this difficult problem in numerical linear algebra. The advantages and disadvantages of these three computational methods are also given in this paper. Furthermore, we prove that the augmented method is free of spurious modes as long as the anisotropic material is not magnetic lossy. The projection method based on singular value decomposition technique can be used to solve the resonant cavity problem. Moreover, the projection method {cannot} introduce any spurious modes. At last, several numerical experiments are carried out to verify our theoretical results.

An energy-stable parametric finite element method for simulating solid-state dewetting

We propose an energy-stable parametric finite element method (ES-PFEM) for simulating solid-state dewetting of thin films in two dimensions via a sharp-interface model, which is governed by surface diffusion and contact line (point) migration together with proper boundary conditions. By reformulating the relaxed contact angle condition into a Robin-type boundary condition and then treating it as a natural boundary condition, we obtain a new variational formulation for the problem, in which the interface curve and its contact points are evolved simultaneously. Then, the variational problem is discretized in space by using piecewise linear elements. A full discretization is presented by adopting the backward Euler method in time, and the well-posedness and energy dissipation of the full discretization are established. The numerical method is semi-implicit (i.e., a linear system to be solved at each time step and thus efficient), unconditionally energy-stable with respect to the time step, and second-order in space measured by a manifold distance between two curves. In addition, it demonstrates equal mesh distribution when the solution reaches its equilibrium, i.e., long-time dynamics. Numerical results are reported to show accuracy and efficiency as well as some good properties of the proposed numerical method.

ArchNet: Data Hiding Model in Distributed Machine Learning System

Integrating idle embedded devices into cloud computing is a promising approach to support distributed machine learning. In this paper, we approach to address the data hiding problem in such distributed machine learning systems. For the purpose of the data encryption in the distributed machine learning systems, we propose the Tripartite Asymmetric Encryption theorem and give mathematical proof. Based on the theorem, we design a general image encryption scheme ArchNet.The scheme has been implemented on MNIST, Fashion-MNIST and Cifar-10 datasets to simulate real situation. We use different base models on the encrypted datasets and compare the results with the RC4 algorithm and differential privacy policy. Experiment results evaluated the efficiency of the proposed design. Specifically, our design can improve the accuracy on MNIST up to 97.26% compared with RC4.The accuracies on the datasets encrypted by ArchNet are 97.26%, 84.15% and 79.80%, and they are 97.31%, 82.31% and 80.22% on the original datasets, which shows that the encrypted accuracy of ArchNet has the same performance as the base model. It also shows that ArchNet can be deployed on the distributed system with embedded devices.

Optimizing Through Learned Errors for Accurate Sports Field Registration

We propose an optimization-based framework to register sports field templates onto broadcast videos. For accurate registration we go beyond the prevalent feed-forward paradigm. Instead, we propose to train a deep network that regresses the registration error, and then register images by finding the registration parameters that minimize the regressed error. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by applying it to real-world sports broadcast videos, outperforming the state of the art. We further apply our method on a synthetic toy example and demonstrate that our method brings significant gains even when the problem is simplified and unlimited training data is available.
