Enhancing LLM Reasoning via Critique Models with Test-Time and Training-Time Supervision

Training large language models (LLMs) to spend more time thinking and reflection before responding is crucial for effectively solving complex reasoning tasks in fields such as science, coding, and mathematics. However, the effectiveness of mechanisms like self-reflection and self-correction depends on the model's capacity to accurately assess its own performance, which can be limited by factors such as initial accuracy, question difficulty, and the lack of external feedback. In this paper, we delve into a two-player paradigm that separates the roles of reasoning and critique models, where the critique model provides step-level feedback to supervise the reasoning (actor) model during both test-time and train-time. We first propose AutoMathCritique, an automated and scalable framework for collecting critique data, resulting in a dataset of $76,321$ responses paired with step-level feedback. Fine-tuning language models with this dataset enables them to generate natural language feedback for mathematical reasoning. We demonstrate that the critique models consistently improve the actor's performance on difficult queries at test-time, especially when scaling up inference-time computation. Motivated by these findings, we introduce the critique-based supervision to the actor's self-training process, and propose a critique-in-the-loop self-improvement method. Experiments show that the method improves the actor's exploration efficiency and solution diversity, especially on challenging queries, leading to a stronger reasoning model. Lastly, we take the preliminary step to explore training self-talk reasoning models via critique supervision and showcase its potential. Tilted stripes origin in ${\mathrm{La}}_{1.88}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{0.12}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ revealed by anisotropic next-nearest neighbor hopping

Spin- and charge- stripe order has been extensively studied in the superconducting cuprates, among which underdoped ${\mathrm{La}}_{2-x}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{x}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ (LSCO) is an archetype with static spin stripes at low temperatures. An intriguing, but not completely understood, phenomenon in LSCO is that the stripes are tilted away from the high-symmetry Cu-Cu directions. Using high-resolution neutron scattering on LSCO with $x=0.12$, we find two coexisting phases at low temperatures, one with static spin stripes and the other with fluctuating ones, both sharing the same tilt angle. Our numerical calculations using the doped Hubbard model elucidate the tilting's origin, attributing it to anisotropic next-nearest neighbor hopping $t^{\prime}$, consistent with the material's slight orthorhombicity. Our results underscore the model's success in describing specific details of the ground state of this real material and highlight the role of $t^\prime$ in the Hamiltonian, revealing the delicate interplay between stripes and superconductivity across theoretical and experimental contexts.

An Exploration of Parallel Imaging System for Very-low Field (50mT) MRI Scanner

Reducing the scanning time of very-low field (VLF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, commonly employed for stroke diagnosis, can enhance patient comfort and operational efficiency. The conventional parallel imaging (PI) technique for high-field MRI should be tailored to apply here, considering the differences in the direction of the main magnetic field and the presence of noise. A VLF-specific PI algorithm and phased-array coil are proposed, marking the first application of PI in VLF MRI. Reconstruction quality is enhanced by denoising undersampled k-space data using a linear-prediction based Kalman filter. Subsequently, the denoised k-space data are nonlinearly mapped from the original space onto a high-dimensional feature space, utilizing a polynomial feature mapping defined nonlinear frame. Frame parameters are calculated using auto-calibration signals (ACS) from the center k-space, and missing phase-encoding lines in the original space are estimated using acquired lines in the feature space. An 8-channel phased-array coil, designed for a vertical main magnetic field, is decoupled using geometric overlap and a low input impedance (LII) preamplifier. Healthy volunteer head imaging experiments using the proposed PI technique exhibit the lowest mean-squared-error (MSE) value and the highest peak-signal-to-noise (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM) values compared to two widely used PI methods. The proposed PI technique enables the VLF MRI scanner to achieve similar image quality and a 72.5% improvement in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to fully sampled images while requiring less than 50% of the scan time. We present a PI technique tailored for VLF MRI scanner for the first time, along with potential research direction to achieve greater reduction factor.

The Framework of NAVIS: Navigating Virtual Spaces with Immersive Scooters

Virtual reality (VR) environments have greatly expanded opportunities for immersive exploration, yet physically navigating these digital spaces remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we present the conceptual framework of NAVIS (Navigating Virtual Spaces with Immersive Scooters), a novel system that utilizes a scooter-based interface to enhance both navigation and interaction within virtual environments. NAVIS combines real-time physical mobility, haptic feedback, and CAVE-like (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) technology to create a realistic sense of travel and movement, improving both spatial awareness and the overall immersive experience. By offering a more natural and physically engaging method of exploration, NAVIS addresses key limitations found in traditional VR locomotion techniques, such as teleportation or joystick control, which can detract from immersion and realism. This approach highlights the potential of combining physical movement with virtual environments to provide a more intuitive and enjoyable experience for users, opening up new possibilities for applications in gaming, education, and beyond.

Investigating Idiomaticity in Word Representations

Idiomatic expressions are an integral part of human languages, often used to express complex ideas in compressed or conventional ways (e.g. eager beaver as a keen and enthusiastic person). However, their interpretations may not be straightforwardly linked to the meanings of their individual components in isolation and this may have an impact for compositional approaches. In this paper, we investigate to what extent word representation models are able to go beyond compositional word combinations and capture multiword expression idiomaticity and some of the expected properties related to idiomatic meanings. We focus on noun compounds of varying levels of idiomaticity in two languages (English and Portuguese), presenting a dataset of minimal pairs containing human idiomaticity judgments for each noun compound at both type and token levels, their paraphrases and their occurrences in naturalistic and sense-neutral contexts, totalling 32,200 sentences. We propose this set of minimal pairs for evaluating how well a model captures idiomatic meanings, and define a set of fine-grained metrics of Affinity and Scaled Similarity, to determine how sensitive the models are to perturbations that may lead to changes in idiomaticity. The results obtained with a variety of representative and widely used models indicate that, despite superficial indications to the contrary in the form of high similarities, idiomaticity is not yet accurately represented in current models. Moreover, the performance of models with different levels of contextualisation suggests that their ability to capture context is not yet able to go beyond more superficial lexical clues provided by the words and to actually incorporate the relevant semantic clues needed for idiomaticity.

Free Video-LLM: Prompt-guided Visual Perception for Efficient Training-free Video LLMs

Vision-language large models have achieved remarkable success in various multi-modal tasks, yet applying them to video understanding remains challenging due to the inherent complexity and computational demands of video data. While training-based video-LLMs deliver high performance, they often require substantial resources for training and inference. Conversely, training-free approaches offer a more efficient alternative by adapting pre-trained image-LLMs models for video tasks without additional training, but they face inference efficiency bottlenecks due to the large number of visual tokens generated from video frames. In this work, we present a novel prompt-guided visual perception framework (abbreviated as Free Video-LLM) for efficient inference of training-free video LLMs. The proposed framework decouples spatial-temporal dimension and performs temporal frame sampling and spatial RoI cropping respectively based on task-specific prompts. Our method effectively reduces the number of visual tokens while maintaining high performance across multiple video question-answering benchmarks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach achieves competitive results with significantly fewer tokens, offering an optimal trade-off between accuracy and computational efficiency compared to state-of-the-art video LLMs. The code will be available at https://github.com/contrastive/FreeVideoLLM.

The $X(4500)$ state considered as the mixture of hadronic molecule and diquark-antidiquark within effective field theory

In the present work, we construct the Lagrangians including three-meson, meson-diquark-antidiquark vertices, such that the diquark-antidiquark component as well as the molecular component are introduced within the effective field theory. With the obtained effective potentials projecting to spin 0, 1 and 2, we solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation with the on-shell approximation, and find that $X(4500)$ can be explained as the mixture of components $D_{s}^{*+}D_{s}^{*-}$, ${A}_{cq}\bar{A}_{cq}$ and ${A}_{cs}\bar{A}_{cs}$ with $I^G(J^{PC})=0^+(0^{++})$. In addition, another two resonances with quantum numbers $I^G(J^{PC})=0^+(1^{++})$ and $I^G(J^{PC})=0^+(2^{++})$ are predicted.

Investigating Creation Perspectives and Icon Placement Preferences for On-Body Menus in Virtual Reality

On-body menus present a novel interaction paradigm within Virtual Reality (VR) environments by embedding virtual interfaces directly onto the user's body. Unlike traditional screen-based interfaces, on-body menus enable users to interact with virtual options or icons visually attached to their physical form. In this paper, We investigated the impact of the creation process on the effectiveness of on-body menus, comparing first-person, third-person, and mirror perspectives. Our first study ($N$ = 12) revealed that the mirror perspective led to faster creation times and more accurate recall compared to the other two perspectives. To further explore user preferences, we conducted a second study ($N$ = 18) utilizing a VR system with integrated body tracking. By combining distributions of icons from both studies ($N$ = 30), we confirmed significant preferences in on-body menu placement based on icon category (e.g., Social Media icons were consistently placed on forearms). We also discovered associations between categories, such as Leisure and Social Media icons frequently co-occurring. Our findings highlight the importance of the creation process, uncover user preferences for on-body menu organization, and provide insights to guide the development of intuitive and effective on-body interactions within virtual environments.

Cross-level Attention with Overlapped Windows for Camouflaged Object Detection

Camouflaged objects adaptively fit their color and texture with the environment, which makes them indistinguishable from the surroundings. Current methods revealed that high-level semantic features can highlight the differences between camouflaged objects and the backgrounds. Consequently, they integrate high-level semantic features with low-level detailed features for accurate camouflaged object detection (COD). Unlike previous designs for multi-level feature fusion, we state that enhancing low-level features is more impending for COD. In this paper, we propose an overlapped window cross-level attention (OWinCA) to achieve the low-level feature enhancement guided by the highest-level features. By sliding an aligned window pair on both the highest- and low-level feature maps, the high-level semantics are explicitly integrated into the low-level details via cross-level attention. Additionally, it employs an overlapped window partition strategy to alleviate the incoherence among windows, which prevents the loss of global information. These adoptions enable the proposed OWinCA to enhance low-level features by promoting the separability of camouflaged objects. The associated proposed OWinCANet fuses these enhanced multi-level features by simple convolution operation to achieve the final COD. Experiments conducted on three large-scale COD datasets demonstrate that our OWinCANet significantly surpasses the current state-of-the-art COD methods.

Rank-Guaranteed Auctions

We propose a combinatorial ascending auction that is "approximately" optimal, requiring minimal rationality to achieve this level of optimality, and is robust to strategic and distributional uncertainties. Specifically, the auction is rank-guaranteed, meaning that for any menu M and any valuation profile, the ex-post revenue is guaranteed to be at least as high as the highest revenue achievable from feasible allocations, taking the (|M|+ 1)th-highest valuation for each bundle as the price. Our analysis highlights a crucial aspect of combinatorial auction design, namely, the design of menus. We provide simple and approximately optimal menus in various settings.

A New Adaptive Phase-locked Loop for Synchronization of a Grid-Connected Voltage Source Converter: Simulation and Experimental Results

In [1] a new adaptive phase-locked loop scheme for synchronization of a grid connected voltage source converter with guaranteed (almost) global stability properties was reported. To guarantee a suitable synchronization with the angle of the three-phase grid voltage we design an adaptive observer for such a signal requiring measurements only at the point of common coupling. In this paper we present some simulation and experimental illustration of the excellent performance of the proposed solution.

MetaDragonBoat: Exploring Paddling Techniques of Virtual Dragon Boating in a Metaverse Campus

The preservation of cultural heritage, as mandated by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is integral to sustainable urban development. This paper focuses on the Dragon Boat Festival, a prominent event in Chinese cultural heritage, and proposes leveraging Virtual Reality (VR), to enhance its preservation and accessibility. Traditionally, participation in the festival's dragon boat races was limited to elite athletes, excluding broader demographics. Our proposed solution, named MetaDragonBoat, enables virtual participation in dragon boat racing, offering immersive experiences that replicate physical exertion through a cultural journey. Thus, we build a digital twin of a university campus located in a region with a rich dragon boat racing tradition. Coupled with three paddling techniques that are enabled by either commercial controllers or physical paddle controllers with haptic feedback, diversified users can engage in realistic rowing experiences. Our results demonstrate that by integrating resistance into the paddle controls, users could simulate the physical effort of dragon boat racing, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of this cultural heritage.

Advancing H&E-to-IHC Stain Translation in Breast Cancer: A Multi-Magnification and Attention-Based Approach

Breast cancer presents a significant healthcare challenge globally, demanding precise diagnostics and effective treatment strategies, where histopathological examination of Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained tissue sections plays a central role. Despite its importance, evaluating specific biomarkers like Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) for personalized treatment remains constrained by the resource-intensive nature of Immunohistochemistry (IHC). Recent strides in deep learning, particularly in image-to-image translation, offer promise in synthesizing IHC-HER2 slides from H\&E stained slides. However, existing methodologies encounter challenges, including managing multiple magnifications in pathology images and insufficient focus on crucial information during translation. To address these issues, we propose a novel model integrating attention mechanisms and multi-magnification information processing. Our model employs a multi-magnification processing strategy to extract and utilize information from various magnifications within pathology images, facilitating robust image translation. Additionally, an attention module within the generative network prioritizes critical information for image distribution translation while minimizing less pertinent details. Rigorous testing on a publicly available breast cancer dataset demonstrates superior performance compared to existing methods, establishing our model as a state-of-the-art solution in advancing pathology image translation from H&E to IHC staining.

CFinBench: A Comprehensive Chinese Financial Benchmark for Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable performance on various NLP tasks, yet their potential in more challenging and domain-specific task, such as finance, has not been fully explored. In this paper, we present CFinBench: a meticulously crafted, the most comprehensive evaluation benchmark to date, for assessing the financial knowledge of LLMs under Chinese context. In practice, to better align with the career trajectory of Chinese financial practitioners, we build a systematic evaluation from 4 first-level categories: (1) Financial Subject: whether LLMs can memorize the necessary basic knowledge of financial subjects, such as economics, statistics and auditing. (2) Financial Qualification: whether LLMs can obtain the needed financial qualified certifications, such as certified public accountant, securities qualification and banking qualification. (3) Financial Practice: whether LLMs can fulfill the practical financial jobs, such as tax consultant, junior accountant and securities analyst. (4) Financial Law: whether LLMs can meet the requirement of financial laws and regulations, such as tax law, insurance law and economic law. CFinBench comprises 99,100 questions spanning 43 second-level categories with 3 question types: single-choice, multiple-choice and judgment. We conduct extensive experiments of 50 representative LLMs with various model size on CFinBench. The results show that GPT4 and some Chinese-oriented models lead the benchmark, with the highest average accuracy being 60.16%, highlighting the challenge presented by CFinBench. Enhancing Idiomatic Representation in Multiple Languages via an Adaptive Contrastive Triplet Loss

Accurately modeling idiomatic or non-compositional language has been a longstanding challenge in Natural Language Processing (NLP). This is partly because these expressions do not derive their meanings solely from their constituent words, but also due to the scarcity of relevant data resources, and their impact on the performance of downstream tasks such as machine translation and simplification. In this paper we propose an approach to model idiomaticity effectively using a triplet loss that incorporates the asymmetric contribution of components words to an idiomatic meaning for training language models by using adaptive contrastive learning and resampling miners to build an idiomatic-aware learning objective. Our proposed method is evaluated on a SemEval challenge and outperforms previous alternatives significantly in many metrics.

Modeling fibrous tissue in vascular fluid-structure interaction: a morphology-based pipeline and biomechanical significance

We propose a suite of technologies for analyzing the interaction between anisotropic arterial walls and blood flow for subject-specific geometries. Utilizing an established lumen modeling strategy, we present a comprehensive pipeline for generating the thick-walled artery models. Through a specialized mesh generation procedure, we obtain the meshes for the arterial lumen and wall with mesh continuity across the interface ensured. Exploiting the centerline information, a series of procedures is introduced for generating local basis vectors within the arterial wall. The procedures are tailored to handle thick-walled and, in particular, aneurysmatic tissues in which the basis vectors may exhibit transmural variations. Additionally, we propose methods to accurately identify the centerline in multi-branched vessels and bifurcating regions. The developed fiber generation method is evaluated against the strategy using linear elastic analysis, demonstrating that the proposed approach yields satisfactory fiber definitions in the considered benchmark. Finally, we examine the impact of anisotropic arterial wall models on the vascular fluid-structure interaction analysis through numerical examples. For comparison purposes, the neo-Hookean model is considered. The first case involves an idealized curved geometry, while the second case studies an image-based abdominal aorta model. The numerical results reveal that the deformation and stress distribution are critically related to the constitutive model of the wall, while the hemodynamic factors are less sensitive to the wall model. This work paves the way for more accurate image-based vascular modeling and enhances the prediction of arterial behavior under physiologically realistic conditions.

AgentGym: Evolving Large Language Model-based Agents across Diverse Environments

Building generalist agents that can handle diverse tasks and evolve themselves across different environments is a long-term goal in the AI community. Large language models (LLMs) are considered a promising foundation to build such agents due to their generalized capabilities. Current approaches either have LLM-based agents imitate expert-provided trajectories step-by-step, requiring human supervision, which is hard to scale and limits environmental exploration; or they let agents explore and learn in isolated environments, resulting in specialist agents with limited generalization. In this paper, we take the first step towards building generally-capable LLM-based agents with self-evolution ability. We identify a trinity of ingredients: 1) diverse environments for agent exploration and learning, 2) a trajectory set to equip agents with basic capabilities and prior knowledge, and 3) an effective and scalable evolution method. We propose AgentGym, a new framework featuring a variety of environments and tasks for broad, real-time, uni-format, and concurrent agent exploration. AgentGym also includes a database with expanded instructions, a benchmark suite, and high-quality trajectories across environments. Next, we propose a novel method, AgentEvol, to investigate the potential of agent self-evolution beyond previously seen data across tasks and environments. Experimental results show that the evolved agents can achieve results comparable to SOTA models. We release the AgentGym suite, including the platform, dataset, benchmark, checkpoints, and algorithm implementations. The AgentGym suite is available on https://github.com/WooooDyy/AgentGym.

Mean Reflected Backward Stochastic Differential Equations Driven by G-Brownian Motion with Double Constraints

In this paper, we study the backward stochastic differential equations driven by G-Brownian motion with double mean reflections, which means that the constraints are made on the law of the solution. Making full use of the backward Skorokhod problem with two nonlinear reflecting boundaries and the fixed-point theory, the existence and uniqueness of solutions are established. We also consider the case where the coefficients satisfy a non-Lipschitz condition using the Picard iteration argument only for the Y component. Moreover, some basic properties including a new version of comparison theorem and connection with a deterministic optimization problem are also obtained.
