Bilateral Teleoperation of Multiple Robots under Scheduling Communication

In this paper, bilateral teleoperation of multiple slaves coupled to a single master under scheduling communication is investigated. The sampled-data transmission between the master and the multiple slaves is fulfilled over a delayed communication network, and at each sampling instant, only one slave is allowed to transmit its current information to the master side according to some scheduling protocols. To achieve the master-slave synchronization, Round-Robin scheduling protocol and Try-Once-Discard scheduling protocol are employed, respectively. By designing a scheduling-communication-based controller, some sufficient stability criteria related to the controller gain matrices, sampling intervals, and communication delays are obtained for the closed-loop teleoperation system under Round-Robin and Try-Once-Discard scheduling protocols, respectively. Finally, simulation studies are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

An Adaptive Passivity-Based Controller of a Buck-Boost Converter With a Constant Power Load

This paper addresses the problem of regulating the output voltage of a DC-DC buck-boost converter feeding a constant power load, which is a problem of current practical interest. Designing a stabilising controller is theoretically challenging because its average model is a bilinear second order system that, due to the presence of the constant power load,is non- minimum phase with respect to both states. Moreover,to design a high performance controller, the knowledge of the extracted load power, which is difficult to measure in industrial applications, is required. In this paper, an adaptive interconnection and damping assignment passivity based control that incorporates the immersion and invariance parameter estimator for the load power is proposed to solve the problem. Some detailed simulations are provided to validate the transient behaviour of the proposed controller and compare it with the performance of a classical PD scheme.

Unifying ultrafast demagnetization and intrinsic Gilbert damping in Co/Ni bilayers with electronic relaxation near the Fermi surface

The ability to controllably manipulate the laser-induced ultrafast magnetic dynamics is a prerequisite for future high speed spintronic devices. The optimization of devices requires the controllability of the ultrafast demagnetization time, , and intrinsic Gilbert damping, . In previous attempts to establish the relationship between and , the rare-earth doping of a permalloy film with two different demagnetization mechanism is not a suitable candidate. Here, we choose Co/Ni bilayers to investigate the relations between and by means of time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) via adjusting the thickness of the Ni layers, and obtain an approximately proportional relation between these two parameters. The remarkable agreement between TRMOKE experiment and the prediction of breathing Fermi-surface model confirms that a large Elliott-Yafet spin-mixing parameter is relevant to the strong spin-orbital coupling at the Co/Ni interface. More importantly, a proportional relation between and in such metallic films or heterostructures with electronic relaxation near Fermi surface suggests the local spin-flip scattering domains the mechanism of ultrafast demagnetization, otherwise the spin-current mechanism domains. It is an effective method to distinguish the dominant contributions to ultrafast magnetic quenching in metallic heterostructures by investigating both the ultrafast demagnetization time and Gilbert damping simultaneously. Our work can open a novel avenue to manipulate the magnitude and efficiency of Terahertz emission in metallic heterostructures such as the perpendicular magnetic anisotropic Ta/Pt/Co/Ni/Pt/Ta multilayers, and then it has an immediate implication of the design of high frequency spintronic devices.

The Necessity of Nowhere Equivalence

We prove some regularity properties (convexity, closedness, compactness and preservation of upper hemicontinuity) for distribution and regular conditional distribution of correspondences under the nowhere equivalence condition. We show the necessity of such a condition for any of these properties to hold. As an application, we demonstrate that the nowhere equivalence condition is satisfied on the underlying agent space if and only if pure-strategy Nash equilibria exist in general large games with any fixed uncountable compact action space.

High pressure x-ray study of spin-Peierls physics in the quantum spin chain material TiOCl

The application of pressure can induce transitions between unconventional quantum phases in correlated materials. The inorganic compound TiOCl, composed of chains of S=1/2 Ti ions, is an ideal realization of a spin-Peierls system with a relatively simple unit cell. At ambient pressure, it is an insulator due to strong electronic interactions (a Mott insulator). Its resistivity shows a sudden decrease with increasing pressure, indicating a transition to a more metallic state which may coincide with the emergence of charge density wave order. Therefore, high pressure studies of the structure with x-rays are crucial in determining the ground-state physics in this quantum magnet. In ambient pressure, TiOCl exhibits a transition to an incommensurate nearly dimerized state at $T_{c2}=92$ K and to a commensurate dimerized state at $T_{c1}=66$ K. Here, we discover a rich phase diagram as a function of temperature and pressure using x-ray diffraction on a single crystal in a diamond anvil cell down to $T=4$ K and pressures up to 14.5 GPa. Remarkably, the magnetic interaction scale increases dramatically with increasing pressure, as indicated by the high onset temperature of the spin-Peierls phase. At $\sim$7 GPa, the extrapolated onset of the spin-Peierls phase occurs above $T=300$ K, indicating a quantum singlet state exists at room temperature. Further comparisons are made with the phase diagrams of related spin-Peierls systems that display metallicity and superconductivity under pressure.

Multiple Fault Attack on PRESENT with a Hardware Trojan Implementation in FPGA

Internet of Things connects lots of small constrained devices to the Internet. As in any other environment, communication security is important and cryptographic algorithms are one of many elements that we use in order to keep messages secure. Because of the constrained nature of these environments, it is necessary to use algorithms that do not require high computational power. Lightweight ciphers are therefore ideal candidates for this purpose. In this paper, we explore a possibility of attacking an ultra-lightweight cipher PRESENT by using a multiple fault attack. Utilizing the Differential Fault Analysis technique, we were able to recover the secret key with two faulty encryptions and an exhaustive search of 2^16 remaining key bits. Our attack aims at four nibbles in the penultimate round of the cipher, causing faulty output in all nibbles of the output. We also provide a practical attack scenario by exploiting Hardware Trojan (HT) technique for the proposed fault injection in a Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA.

Stationary Markov Perfect Equilibria in Discounted Stochastic Games

The existence of stationary Markov perfect equilibria in stochastic games is shown under a general condition called "(decomposable) coarser transition kernels". This result covers various earlier existence results on correlated equilibria, noisy stochastic games, stochastic games with finite actions and state-independent transitions, and stochastic games with mixtures of constant transition kernels as special cases. A remarkably simple proof is provided via establishing a new connection between stochastic games and conditional expectations of correspondences. New applications of stochastic games are presented as illustrative examples, including stochastic games with endogenous shocks and a stochastic dynamic oligopoly model.

Semi-Supervised Learning for Neural Machine Translation

While end-to-end neural machine translation (NMT) has made remarkable progress recently, NMT systems only rely on parallel corpora for parameter estimation. Since parallel corpora are usually limited in quantity, quality, and coverage, especially for low-resource languages, it is appealing to exploit monolingual corpora to improve NMT. We propose a semi-supervised approach for training NMT models on the concatenation of labeled (parallel corpora) and unlabeled (monolingual corpora) data. The central idea is to reconstruct the monolingual corpora using an autoencoder, in which the source-to-target and target-to-source translation models serve as the encoder and decoder, respectively. Our approach can not only exploit the monolingual corpora of the target language, but also of the source language. Experiments on the Chinese-English dataset show that our approach achieves significant improvements over state-of-the-art SMT and NMT systems.

Chinese Poetry Generation with Planning based Neural Network

Chinese poetry generation is a very challenging task in natural language processing. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage poetry generating method which first plans the sub-topics of the poem according to the user's writing intent, and then generates each line of the poem sequentially, using a modified recurrent neural network encoder-decoder framework. The proposed planning-based method can ensure that the generated poem is coherent and semantically consistent with the user's intent. A comprehensive evaluation with human judgments demonstrates that our proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art poetry generating methods and the poem quality is somehow comparable to human poets.

Minimum Risk Training for Neural Machine Translation

We propose minimum risk training for end-to-end neural machine translation. Unlike conventional maximum likelihood estimation, minimum risk training is capable of optimizing model parameters directly with respect to arbitrary evaluation metrics, which are not necessarily differentiable. Experiments show that our approach achieves significant improvements over maximum likelihood estimation on a state-of-the-art neural machine translation system across various languages pairs. Transparent to architectures, our approach can be applied to more neural networks and potentially benefit more NLP tasks.

Agreement-based Joint Training for Bidirectional Attention-based Neural Machine Translation

The attentional mechanism has proven to be effective in improving end-to-end neural machine translation. However, due to the intricate structural divergence between natural languages, unidirectional attention-based models might only capture partial aspects of attentional regularities. We propose agreement-based joint training for bidirectional attention-based end-to-end neural machine translation. Instead of training source-to-target and target-to-source translation models independently, our approach encourages the two complementary models to agree on word alignment matrices on the same training data. Experiments on Chinese-English and English-French translation tasks show that agreement-based joint training significantly improves both alignment and translation quality over independent training.

Role-based Label Propagation Algorithm for Community Detection

Community structure of networks provides comprehensive insight into their organizational structure and functional behavior. LPA is one of the most commonly adopted community detection algorithms with nearly linear time complexity. But it suffers from poor stability and occurrence of monster community due to the introduced randomize. We note that different community-oriented node roles impact the label propagation in different ways. In this paper, we propose a role-based label propagation algorithm (roLPA), in which the heuristics with regard to community-oriented node role were used. We have evaluated the proposed algorithm on both real and artificial networks. The result shows that roLPA is comparable to the state-of-the-art community detection algorithms.

A Pair of Giant Planets around the Evolved Intermediate-Mass Star HD 47366: Multiple Circular Orbits or a Mutually Retrograde Configuration

We report the detection of a double planetary system around the evolved intermediate-mass star HD 47366 from precise radial-velocity measurements at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, Xinglong Station, and Australian Astronomical Observatory. The star is a K1 giant with a mass of 1.81+-0.13M_sun, a radius of 7.30+-0.33R_sun, and solar metallicity. The planetary system is composed of two giant planets with minimum mass of 1.75^{+0.20}_{-0.17}Mjup and 1.86^{+0.16}_{-0.15}Mjup, orbital period of 363.3^{+2.5}_{-2.4} d and 684.7^{+5.0}_{-4.9} d, and eccentricity of 0.089^{+0.079}_{-0.060} and 0.278^{+0.067}_{-0.094}, respectively, which are derived by a double Keplerian orbital fit to the radial-velocity data. The system adds to the population of multi-giant-planet systems with relatively small orbital separations, which are preferentially found around evolved intermediate-mass stars. Dynamical stability analysis for the system revealed, however, that the best-fit orbits are unstable in the case of a prograde configuration. The system could be stable if the planets were in 2:1 mean-motion resonance, but this is less likely considering the observed period ratio and eccentricity. A present possible scenario for the system is that both of the planets have nearly circular orbits, namely the eccentricity of the outer planet is less than ~0.15, which is just within 1.4sigma of the best-fit value, or the planets are in a mutually retrograde configuration with a mutual orbital inclination larger than 160 degree.

Categorically proper homomorphisms of topological groups

We extend the Dikranjan-Uspenskij notions of c-compact and h-complete topological group to the morphism level, study the stability properties of the newly defined types of maps, such as closure under direct products, and compare them with their counterparts in topology. We assume Hausdorffness only when our proofs require us to do so, which leads to new results and the affirmation of some facts that were known in a Hausdorff context.

Combinatorial approach to Mathieu and Lamé equations

Based on some recent progress on a relation between four dimensional super Yang-Mills gauge theory and quantum integrable system, we study the asymptotic spectrum of the quantum mechanical problems described by the Mathieu equation and the Lamé equation. The large momentum asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue is related to the instanton partition function of supersymmetric gauge theories which can be evaluated by a combinatorial method. The electro-magnetic duality of gauge theory indicates that in the parameter space there are three asymptotic expansions for the eigenvalue, we confirm this fact by performing the WKB analysis in each asymptotic expansion region. The results presented here give some new perspective on the Floquet theory about periodic differential equation.

Partially Ordered Sheaves on a Locale. I (II)

In this paper, we investigate the order algebraic structure in the category of sheaves on a given locale $X$. Since every localic topos has a generating set formed by its subterminal objects, we define a "point" of a partially ordered sheaf to be a morphism from a subterminal sheaf to the partially ordered sheaf. Using the concept of "points," we investigate the completeness of posheaves systemically. Some internal characterizations of complete partially ordered sheaves and frame sheaves are given. We also give an explicit description of the construction of associated sheaf locales and show directly that the category $Sh(X)$ of sheaves on a locale $X$ is equivalent to the slice category $LH/X$ of locales and local homeomorphisms over $X$. Applying this equivalence, we give characterizations of partially ordered sheaves and complete partially ordered sheaves in terms of sheaf locale respectively. This paper is a continuation of our paper [1]. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of directed complete partially ordered sheaves (shortly dcposheaves) on a given locale. some internal characterizations of dcposheaves and meet continuous dcposheaves are given respectively. We also give characterizations of continuous posheaves and completely distributive posheaves, and show that an algebraic completely distributive posheaf is spatial.

A New Logic For Uncertainty

Fuzziness and randomicity widespread exist in natural science, engineering, technology and social science. The purpose of this paper is to present a new logic - uncertain propositional logic which can deal with both fuzziness by taking truth value semantics and randomicity by taking probabilistic semantics or possibility semantics. As the first step for purpose of establishing a logic system which completely reflect the uncertainty of the objective world, this logic will lead to a set of logical foundations for uncertainty theory as what classical logic done in certain or definite situations or circumstances.

Dynamic Games with Almost Perfect Information

This paper aims to solve two fundamental problems on finite or infinite horizon dynamic games with perfect or almost perfect information. Under some mild conditions, we prove (1) the existence of subgame-perfect equilibria in general dynamic games with almost perfect information, and (2) the existence of pure-strategy subgame-perfect equilibria in perfect-information dynamic games with uncertainty. Our results go beyond previous works on continuous dynamic games in the sense that public randomization and the continuity requirement on the state variables are not needed. As an illustrative application, a dynamic stochastic oligopoly market with intertemporally dependent payoffs is considered.
