Self-supervised Geometric Perception

We present self-supervised geometric perception (SGP), the first general framework to learn a feature descriptor for correspondence matching without any ground-truth geometric model labels (e.g., camera poses, rigid transformations). Our first contribution is to formulate geometric perception as an optimization problem that jointly optimizes the feature descriptor and the geometric models given a large corpus of visual measurements (e.g., images, point clouds). Under this optimization formulation, we show that two important streams of research in vision, namely robust model fitting and deep feature learning, correspond to optimizing one block of the unknown variables while fixing the other block. This analysis naturally leads to our second contribution -- the SGP algorithm that performs alternating minimization to solve the joint optimization. SGP iteratively executes two meta-algorithms: a teacher that performs robust model fitting given learned features to generate geometric pseudo-labels, and a student that performs deep feature learning under noisy supervision of the pseudo-labels. As a third contribution, we apply SGP to two perception problems on large-scale real datasets, namely relative camera pose estimation on MegaDepth and point cloud registration on 3DMatch. We demonstrate that SGP achieves state-of-the-art performance that is on-par or superior to the supervised oracles trained using ground-truth labels.

An Evolutionary Study of Configuration Design and Implementation in Cloud Systems

Many techniques were proposed for detecting software misconfigurations in cloud systems and for diagnosing unintended behavior caused by such misconfigurations. Detection and diagnosis are steps in the right direction: misconfigurations cause many costly failures and severe performance issues. But, we argue that continued focus on detection and diagnosis is symptomatic of a more serious problem: configuration design and implementation are not yet first-class software engineering endeavors in cloud systems. Little is known about how and why developers evolve configuration design and implementation, and the challenges that they face in doing so. This paper presents a source-code level study of the evolution of configuration design and implementation in cloud systems. Our goal is to understand the rationale and developer practices for revising initial configuration design/implementation decisions, especially in response to consequences of misconfigurations. To this end, we studied 1178 configuration-related commits from a 2.5 year version-control history of four large-scale, actively-maintained open-source cloud systems (HDFS, HBase, Spark, and Cassandra). We derive new insights into the software configuration engineering process. Our results motivate new techniques for proactively reducing misconfigurations by improving the configuration design and implementation process in cloud systems. We highlight a number of future research directions.

An Active Sense and Avoid System for Flying Robots in Dynamic Environments

This paper investigates a novel active-sensing-based obstacle avoidance paradigm for flying robots in dynamic environments. Instead of fusing multiple sensors to enlarge the field of view (FOV), we introduce an alternative approach that utilizes a stereo camera with an independent rotational DOF to sense the obstacles actively. In particular, the sensing direction is planned heuristically by multiple objectives, including tracking dynamic obstacles, observing the heading direction, and exploring the previously unseen area. With the sensing result, a flight path is then planned based on real-time sampling and uncertainty-aware collision checking in the state space, which constitutes an active sense and avoid (ASAA) system. Experiments in both simulation and the real world demonstrate that this system can well cope with dynamic obstacles and abrupt goal direction changes. Since only one stereo camera is utilized, this system provides a low-cost and effective approach to overcome the FOV limitation in visual navigation.

Compositional Scalable Object SLAM

We present a fast, scalable, and accurate Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) system that represents indoor scenes as a graph of objects. Leveraging the observation that artificial environments are structured and occupied by recognizable objects, we show that a compositional scalable object mapping formulation is amenable to a robust SLAM solution for drift-free large scale indoor reconstruction. To achieve this, we propose a novel semantically assisted data association strategy that obtains unambiguous persistent object landmarks, and a 2.5D compositional rendering method that enables reliable frame-to-model RGB-D tracking. Consequently, we deliver an optimized online implementation that can run at near frame rate with a single graphics card, and provide a comprehensive evaluation against state of the art baselines. An open source implementation will be provided at https://placeholder.

Deep Global Registration

We present Deep Global Registration, a differentiable framework for pairwise registration of real-world 3D scans. Deep global registration is based on three modules: a 6-dimensional convolutional network for correspondence confidence prediction, a differentiable Weighted Procrustes algorithm for closed-form pose estimation, and a robust gradient-based SE(3) optimizer for pose refinement. Experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods, both learning-based and classical, on real-world data.

Combining Symbolic Execution and Model Checking to Verify MPI Programs

Message passing is the standard paradigm of programming in high-performance computing. However, verifying Message Passing Interface (MPI) programs is challenging, due to the complex program features (such as non-determinism and non-blocking operations). In this work, we present MPI symbolic verifier (MPI-SV), the first symbolic execution based tool for automatically verifying MPI programs with non-blocking operations. MPI-SV combines symbolic execution and model checking in a synergistic way to tackle the challenges in MPI program verification. The synergy improves the scalability and enlarges the scope of verifiable properties. We have implemented MPI-SV (footnote: https://mpi-sv.github.io) and evaluated it with 111 real-world MPI verification tasks. The pure symbolic execution-based technique successfully verifies 61 out of the 111 tasks (55\%) within one hour, while in comparison, MPI-SV verifies 100 tasks (90\%). On average, compared with pure symbolic execution, MPI-SV achieves 19x speedups on verifying the satisfaction of the critical property and 5x speedups on finding violations.

Impacts of Grid Structure on PLL-Synchronization Stability of Converter-Integrated Power Systems

Small-signal instability of grid-connected power converters may arise when the converters use a phase-locked loop (PLL) to synchronize with a weak grid. Commonly, this stability problem (referred as PLL-synchronization stability in this paper) was studied by employing a single-converter system connected to an infinite bus, which however, omits the impacts of power grid structure and the interactions among multiple converters. Motivated by this, we investigate how the grid structure affects PLL-synchronization stability of multi-converter systems. By using Kron reduction to eliminate the interior nodes, an equivalent reduced network is obtained which contains only the converter nodes. We explicitly show how the Kron-reduced multi-converter system can be decoupled into its modes. This modal representation allows us to demonstrate that the smallest eigenvalue of the grounded Laplacian matrix of the Kron-reduced network dominates the stability margin. We also carry out a sensitivity analysis of this smallest eigenvalue to explore how a perturbation in the original network affects the stability margin. On this basis, we provide guidelines on how to improve the PLL-synchronization stability of multi-converter systems by PLL-retuning, proper placement of converters or enhancing some weak connection in the network. Finally, we validate our findings with simulation results based on a 39-bus test system.

Learning to Navigate from Simulation via Spatial and Semantic Information Synthesis with Noise Model Embedding

While training an end-to-end navigation network in the real world is usually of high cost, simulation provides a safe and cheap environment in this training stage. However, training neural network models in simulation brings up the problem of how to effectively transfer the model from simulation to the real world (sim-to-real). In this work, we regard the environment representation as a crucial element in this transfer process and propose a visual information pyramid (VIP) model to systematically investigate a practical environment representation. A novel representation composed of spatial and semantic information synthesis is then established accordingly, where noise model embedding is particularly considered. To explore the effectiveness of this representation, we compared the performance with representations popularly used in the literature in both simulated and real-world scenarios. Results suggest that our environment representation stands out. Furthermore, an analysis on the feature map is implemented to investigate the effectiveness through inner reaction, which could be irradiative for future researches on end-to-end navigation.

Document Hashing with Mixture-Prior Generative Models

Hashing is promising for large-scale information retrieval tasks thanks to the efficiency of distance evaluation between binary codes. Generative hashing is often used to generate hashing codes in an unsupervised way. However, existing generative hashing methods only considered the use of simple priors, like Gaussian and Bernoulli priors, which limits these methods to further improve their performance. In this paper, two mixture-prior generative models are proposed, under the objective to produce high-quality hashing codes for documents. Specifically, a Gaussian mixture prior is first imposed onto the variational auto-encoder (VAE), followed by a separate step to cast the continuous latent representation of VAE into binary code. To avoid the performance loss caused by the separate casting, a model using a Bernoulli mixture prior is further developed, in which an end-to-end training is admitted by resorting to the straight-through (ST) discrete gradient estimator. Experimental results on several benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed methods, especially the one using Bernoulli mixture priors, consistently outperform existing ones by a substantial margin.

Lung cancer screening with low-dose CT scans using a deep learning approach

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Early detection through low-dose computed tomography (CT) screening has been shown to significantly reduce mortality but suffers from a high false positive rate that leads to unnecessary diagnostic procedures. Quantitative image analysis coupled to deep learning techniques has the potential to reduce this false positive rate. We conducted a computational analysis of 1449 low-dose CT studies drawn from the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) cohort. We applied to this cohort our newly developed algorithm, DeepScreener, which is based on a novel deep learning approach. The algorithm, after the training process using about 3000 CT studies, does not require lung nodule annotations to conduct cancer prediction. The algorithm uses consecutive slices and multi-task features to determine whether a nodule is likely to be cancer, and a spatial pyramid to detect nodules at different scales. We find that the algorithm can predict a patient's cancer status from a volumetric lung CT image with high accuracy (78.2%, with area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.858). Our preliminary framework ranked 16th of 1972 teams (top 1%) in the Data Science Bowl 2017 (DSB2017) competition, based on the challenge datasets. We report here the application of DeepScreener on an independent NLST test set. This study indicates that the deep learning approach has the potential to significantly reduce the false positive rate in lung cancer screening with low-dose CT scans.

Guided Feature Selection for Deep Visual Odometry

We present a novel end-to-end visual odometry architecture with guided feature selection based on deep convolutional recurrent neural networks. Different from current monocular visual odometry methods, our approach is established on the intuition that features contribute discriminately to different motion patterns. Specifically, we propose a dual-branch recurrent network to learn the rotation and translation separately by leveraging current Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for feature representation and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) for image sequence reasoning. To enhance the ability of feature selection, we further introduce an effective context-aware guidance mechanism to force each branch to distill related information for specific motion pattern explicitly. Experiments demonstrate that on the prevalent KITTI and ICL_NUIM benchmarks, our method outperforms current state-of-the-art model- and learning-based methods for both decoupled and joint camera pose recovery.

Boosting the Robustness Verification of DNN by Identifying the Achilles's Heel

Deep Neural Network (DNN) is a widely used deep learning technique. How to ensure the safety of DNN-based system is a critical problem for the research and application of DNN. Robustness is an important safety property of DNN. However, existing work of verifying DNN's robustness is time-consuming and hard to scale to large-scale DNNs. In this paper, we propose a boosting method for DNN robustness verification, aiming to find counter-examples earlier. Our observation is DNN's different inputs have different possibilities of existing counter-examples around them, and the input with a small difference between the largest output value and the second largest output value tends to be the achilles's heel of the DNN. We have implemented our method and applied it on Reluplex, a state-of-the-art DNN verification tool, and four DNN attacking methods. The results of the extensive experiments on two benchmarks indicate the effectiveness of our boosting method.

PSDF Fusion: Probabilistic Signed Distance Function for On-the-fly 3D Data Fusion and Scene Reconstruction

We propose a novel 3D spatial representation for data fusion and scene reconstruction. Probabilistic Signed Distance Function (Probabilistic SDF, PSDF) is proposed to depict uncertainties in the 3D space. It is modeled by a joint distribution describing SDF value and its inlier probability, reflecting input data quality and surface geometry. A hybrid data structure involving voxel, surfel, and mesh is designed to fully exploit the advantages of various prevalent 3D representations. Connected by PSDF, these components reasonably cooperate in a consistent frame- work. Given sequential depth measurements, PSDF can be incrementally refined with less ad hoc parametric Bayesian updating. Supported by PSDF and the efficient 3D data representation, high-quality surfaces can be extracted on-the-fly, and in return contribute to reliable data fu- sion using the geometry information. Experiments demonstrate that our system reconstructs scenes with higher model quality and lower redundancy, and runs faster than existing online mesh generation systems.

Scheduling Constraint Based Abstraction Refinement for Multi-Threaded Program Verification

Bounded model checking is among the most efficient techniques for the automatic verification of concurrent programs. However, encoding all possible interleavings often requires a huge and complex formula, which significantly limits the salability. This paper proposes a novel and efficient abstraction refinement method for multi-threaded program verification. Observing that the huge formula is usually dominated by the exact encoding of the scheduling constraint, this paper proposes a \tsc based abstraction refinement method, which avoids the huge and complex encoding of BMC. In addition, to obtain an effective refinement, we have devised two graph-based algorithms over event order graph for counterexample validation and refinement generation, which can always obtain a small yet effective refinement constraint. Enhanced by two constraint-based algorithms for counterexample validation and refinement generation, we have proved that our method is sound and complete w.r.t. the given loop unwinding depth. Experimental results on \svcompc benchmarks indicate that our method is promising and significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art tools.

Generalized Short Circuit Ratio for Multi Power Electronic based Devices Infeed Systems: Defi-nition and Theoretical Analysis

Short circuit ratio (SCR) is widely applied to analyze the strength of AC system and the small signal stability for single power elec-tronic based devices infeed systems (SPEISs). However, there still lacking the theory of short circuit ratio applicable for multi power electronic based devices infeed systems (MPEIS), as the complex coupling among multi power electronic devices (PEDs) leads to difficulties in stability analysis. In this regard, this paper firstly proposes a concept named generalized short circuit ratio (gSCR) to measure the strength of connected AC grid in a multi-infeed system from the small signal stability point of view. Generally, the gSCR is physically and mathematically extended from conven-tional SCR by decomposing the multi-infeed system into n inde-pendent single infeed systems. Then the operation gSCR (OgSCR) is proposed based on gSCR in order to take the variation of op-eration point into consideration. The participation factors and sensitivity are analyzed as well. Finally, simulations are conducted to demonstrate the rationality and effectiveness of the defined gSCR and OgSCR.

An Efficient Volumetric Mesh Representation for Real-time Scene Reconstruction using Spatial Hashing

Mesh plays an indispensable role in dense real-time reconstruction essential in robotics. Efforts have been made to maintain flexible data structures for 3D data fusion, yet an efficient incremental framework specifically designed for online mesh storage and manipulation is missing. We propose a novel framework to compactly generate, update, and refine mesh for scene reconstruction upon a volumetric representation. Maintaining a spatial-hashed field of cubes, we distribute vertices with continuous value on discrete edges that support O(1) vertex accessing and forbid memory redundancy. By introducing Hamming distance in mesh refinement, we further improve the mesh quality regarding the triangle type consistency with a low cost. Lock-based and lock-free operations were applied to avoid thread conflicts in GPU parallel computation. Experiments demonstrate that the mesh memory consumption is significantly reduced while the running speed is kept in the online reconstruction process.

Generalized-impedance and Stability Criterion for Grid-connected Converters

The output impedance matrix of a grid-connected converter plays an important role in analyzing system stability. Due to the dynamics of the DC-link control and the phase locked loop (PLL), the output impedance matrices of the converter and grid are difficult to be diagonally decoupled simultaneously, neither in the dq domain nor in the phase domain. It weakens the effectiveness of impedance-based stability criterion (ISC) in system oscillation analysis. To this end, this paper innovatively proposes the generalized-impedance based stability criterion (GISC) to reduce the dimension of the transfer function matrix and simplify system small-signal stability analysis. Firstly, the impedances of the converter and the grid in polar coordinates are formulated, and the concept of generalized-impedance of the converter and the grid is put forward. Secondly, through strict mathematical derivation, the equation that implies the dynamic interaction between the converter and the grid is then extracted from the characteristic equation of the grid-connected converter system. Using the proposed method, the small-signal instability of system can be interpreted as the resonance of the generalized-impedances of the converter and the grid. Besides, the GISC is equivalent to ISC when the dynamics of the outer-loop control and PLL are not considered. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is further verified using the MATLAB based digital simulation and RT-LAB based hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation.

A Generalized-Impedance Based Stability Criterion for Three-Phase Grid-Connected Voltage Source Converters

The output impedance matrices of three-phase grid-connected voltage source converters (VSCs) are widely used in power system stability analysis. Regardless of how the impedance is modeled, there always exist coupling terms in the impedance matrix, which makes the system a multi-input- multi-output (MIMO) system. Some approximation approaches omit the coupling terms so that a three-phase system can be treated like a single-phase one, and the impedance-based stability criterion for a single-input-single-output (SISO) system is applicable. However, such handling may result in analytical errors or even incorrect conclusions in a mirror frequency coupled system. By introducing the concept of generalized- impedances, this letter proposes a new stability criterion based on a virtual SISO system, which can effectively handle the coupling terms. Further, the effects of the phase-locked-loop (PLL) parameters on system stability are studied based on the proposed criterion. The effectiveness of the proposed criterion is verified by a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation based on RT-LAB.
