Quantum memory using a hybrid circuit with flux qubits and NV centers

We propose how to realize high-fidelity quantum storage using a hybrid quantum architecture including two coupled flux qubits and a nitrogen-vacancy center ensemble (NVE). One of the flux qubits is considered as the quantum computing processor and the NVE serves as the quantum memory. By separating the computing and memory units, the influence of the quantum computing process on the quantum memory can be effectively eliminated, and hence the quantum storage of an arbitrary quantum state of the computing qubit could be achieved with high fidelity. Furthermore the present proposal is robust with respect to fluctuations of the system parameters, and it is experimentally feasibile with currently available technology.

Absolutely Maximally Entangled States: Existence and Applications

We investigate absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states, which are multipartite quantum states that are maximally entangled with respect to any possible bipartition. These strong entanglement properties make them a powerful resource for a variety of quantum information protocols. In this paper, we show the existence of AME states for any number of parties, given that the dimension of the involved systems is chosen appropriately. We prove the equivalence of AME states shared between an even number of parties and pure state threshold quantum secret sharing (QSS) schemes, and prove necessary and sufficient entanglement properties for a wider class of ramp QSS schemes. We further show how AME states can be used as a valuable resource for open-destination teleportation protocols and to what extend entanglement swapping generalizes to AME states.

Feedback Control of Rabi Oscillations in Circuit QED

We consider the feedback stabilization of Rabi oscillations in a superconducting qubit which is coupled to a microwave readout cavity. The signal is readout by homodyne detection of the in-phase quadrature amplitude of the weak measurement output. By multiplying the time-delayed Rabi reference, one can extract the signal, with maximum signal-to-noise ratio, from the noise. We further track and stabilize the Rabi oscillations by using Lyapunov feedback control to properly adjust the input Rabi drives. Theoretical and simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control law.

Reconstructing three-dimensional parameters of galaxy clusters via multifrequency SZ observations

The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect is a promising tool to study physical properties of the hot X-ray emitting intracluster medium (ICM) in galaxy clusters. To date, most SZ observations have been interpreted in combination with X-ray follow-up measurements in order to determine the ICM temperature and estimate the cluster mass. Future high-resolution, multifrequency SZ observations promise to enable detailed studies of the ICM structures, by measuring the ICM temperature through the temperature-dependent relativistic corrections. In this work we develop a non-parametric method to derive three-dimensional physical quantities, including temperature, pressure, total mass, and peculiar velocities, of galaxy clusters from SZ observations alone. We test the performance of this method using hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters, in order to assess systematic uncertainties in the reconstructed physical parameters. In particular, we analyze mock Cerro Chajnantor Atacama Telescope (CCAT) SZ observations, taking into account various sources of systematic uncertainties associated with instrumental effects and astrophysical foregrounds. We show that our method enables accurate reconstruction of the three-dimensional ICM profiles, while retaining full information about the gas distribution. We discuss the application of this technique for ongoing and future multifrequency SZ observations.

Confidence and Backaction in the Quantum Filter Equation

We study the confidence and backaction of state reconstruction based on a continuous weak measurement and the quantum filter equation. As a physical example we use the traditional model of a double quantum dot being continuously monitored by a quantum point contact. We examine the confidence of the estimate of a state constructed from the measurement record, and the effect of backaction of that measurement on that state. Finally, in the case of general measurements we show that using the relative entropy as a measure of confidence allows us to define the lower bound on the confidence as a type of quantum discord.

Increasing Entanglement by Separable Operations and New Monotones for W-type Entanglement

The class of local operations and classical communication (LOCC) pertains to an important measurement scenario in many quantum communication schemes. While LOCC belongs to the more general class of separable operations (SEP), the exact difference between the two remains a challenging open problem. In this article, we seek to better understand the structure of LOCC and its relationship to SEP by comparing their respective abilities for distilling EPR entanglement from one copy of an $N$-qubit W-class state (i.e. that of the form $\sqrt{x_0}\ket{00...0}+\sqrt{x_1}\ket{10...0}+...+\sqrt{x_n}\ket{00...1}$). In terms of transformation success probability, we are able to quantify a gap as large as 37% between the two classes. Our work involves constructing new analytic entanglement monotones for W-class states which can increase on average by separable operations. Additionally, we are able to show that the set of LOCC operations, considered as a subset of the most general quantum measurements, is not closed.

Fast Shape Estimation for Galaxies and Stars

Model fitting is frequently used to determine the shape of galaxies and the point spread function, for examples, in weak lensing analyses or morphology studies aiming at probing the evolution of galaxies. However, the number of parameters in the model, as well as the number of objects, are often so large as to limit the use of model fitting for future large surveys. In this article, we propose a set of algorithms to speed up the fitting process. Our approach is divided into three distinctive steps: centroiding, ellipticity measurement, and profile fitting. We demonstrate that we can derive the position and ellipticity of an object analytically in the first two steps and thus leave only a small number of parameters to be derived through model fitting. The position, ellipticity, and shape parameters can then used in constructing orthonomal basis functions such as sérsiclets for better galaxy image reconstruction. We assess the efficiency and accuracy of the algorithms with simulated images. We have not taken into account the deconvolution of the point spread function, which most weak lensing analyses do.

Two-qubit gate operations in superconducting circuits with strong coupling and weak anharmonicity

We investigate theoretically the implementation of two-qubit gates in a system of two coupled superconducting qubits. In particular, we analyze two-qubit gate operations under the condition that the coupling strength is comparable to or even larger than the anharmonicity of the qubits. By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we obtain the dependence of the two-qubit gate fidelity on the system parameters in the case of direct and indirect qubit-qubit coupling. Our numerical results can be used to identify the "safe" parameter regime for experimentally implementing two-qubit gates with high fidelity in these systems.

Absolute Maximal Entanglement and Quantum Secret Sharing

We study the existence of absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states in quantum mechanics and its applications to quantum information. AME states are characterized by being maximally entangled for all bipartitions of the system and exhibit genuine multipartite entanglement. With such states, we present a novel parallel teleportation protocol which teleports multiple quantum states between groups of senders and receivers. The notable features of this protocol are that (i) the partition into senders and receivers can be chosen after the state has been distributed, and (ii) one group has to perform joint quantum operations while the parties of the other group only have to act locally on their system. We also prove the equivalence between pure state quantum secret sharing schemes and AME states with an even number of parties. This equivalence implies the existence of AME states for an arbitrary number of parties based on known results about the existence of quantum secret sharing schemes.

Randomly distilling W-class states into general configurations of two-party entanglement

In this article we obtain new results for the task of converting a \textit{single} $N$-qubit W-class state (of the form $\sqrt{x_0}\ket{00...0}+\sqrt{x_1}\ket{10...0}+...+\sqrt{x_N}\ket{00...1}$) into maximum entanglement shared between two random parties. Previous studies in random distillation have not considered how the particular choice of target pairs affects the transformation, and here we develop a strategy for distilling into \textit{general} configurations of target pairs. We completely solve the problem of determining the optimal distillation probability for all three qubit configurations and most four qubit configurations when $x_0=0$. Our proof involves deriving new entanglement monotones defined on the set of four qubit W-class states. As an additional application of our results, we present new upper bounds for converting a generic W-class state into the standard W state $\ket{W_N}=\sqrt{\frac{1}{N}}(\ket{10...0}+...+\ket{00...1})$.

Optimal Entanglement Transformations Among N-qubit W-Class States

We investigate the physically allowed probabilities for transforming one N-partite W-class state to another by means of local operations assisted with classical communication (LOCC). Recently, Kintas and Turgut have obtained an upper bound for the maximum probability of transforming two such states [arXiv:1003.2118v1]. Here, we provide a simple sufficient and necessary condition for when this upper bound can be satisfied and thus when optimality of state transformation can be achieved. Our discussion involves obtaining lower bounds for the transformation of arbitrary W-class states and showing precisely when this bound saturates the bound of [arXiv:1003.2118v1]. Finally, we consider the question of transforming symmetric W-class states and find that in general, the optimal one-shot procedure for converting two symmetric states requires a non-symmetric filter by all the parties.

Evidence for Cosmic Ray Acceleration in Cassiopeia A

Combining archival data taken at radio and infrared wavelengths with state-of-the-art measurements at X-ray and gamma-ray energies, we assembled a broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of Cas A, a young supernova remnant. Except for strong thermal emission at infrared and X-ray wavelengths, the SED is dominated by non-thermal radiation. We attempted to model the non-thermal SED with a two-zone leptonic model which assumes that the radio emission is produced by electrons that are uniformly distributed throughout the remnant while the non-thermal X-ray emission by electrons that are localized in regions near the forward shock. Synchrotron emission from the electrons can account for data from radio to X-ray wavelengths. Much of the GeV-TeV emission can also be explained by a combination of bremsstrahlung emission and inverse-Compton scattering (mainly of infrared thermal photons). However, the model cannot fit a distinct feature at GeV energies. This feature can be well accounted for by adding a pion-zero emission component to the model, providing evidence for cosmic ray production in Cas A. We discuss the implications of the results.

Variable O VI and N V Emission from the X-ray Binary LMC X-3: Heating of the Black Hole Companion

Based on high-resolution ultraviolet spectroscopy obtained with FUSE and COS, we present new detections of O VI and N V emission from the black-hole X-ray binary (XRB) system LMC X-3. We also update the ephemeris of the XRB using recent radial velocity measurements obtained with the echelle spectrograph on the Magellan-Clay telescope. We observe significant velocity variability of the UV emission, and we find that the O VI and N V emission velocities follow the optical velocity curve of the XRB. Moreover, the O VI and N V intensities regularly decrease between binary phase = 0.5 and 1.0, which suggests that the source of the UV emission is increasingly occulted as the B star in the XRB moves from superior to inferior conjunction. These trends suggest that illumination of the B-star atmosphere by the intense X-ray emission from the accreting black hole creates a hot spot on one side of the B star, and this hot spot is the origin of the O VI and N V emission. However, the velocity semiamplitude of the ultraviolet emission, K_{UV}~180 km/s, is lower than the optical semiamplitude; this difference could be due to rotation of the B star. If our hypothesis about the origin of the highly ionized emission is correct, then careful analysis of the emission occultation could, in principle, constrain the inclination of the XRB and the mass of the black hole.

Optimal control of population transfer in Markovian open quantum systems

There has long been interest to control the transfer of population between specified quantum states. Recent work has optimized the control law for closed system population transfer by using a gradient ascent pulse engineer- ing algorithm [1]. Here, a spin-boson model consisting of two-level atoms which interact with the dissipative environment, is investigated. With opti- mal control, the quantum system can invert the populations of the quantum logic states. The temperature plays an important role in controlling popula- tion transfer. At low temperatures the control has active performance, while at high temperatures it has less erect. We also analyze the decoherence be- havior of open quantum systems with optimal population transfer control, and we find that these controls can prolong the coherence time. We hope that active optimal control can help quantum solid-state-based engineering.

Optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum systems via feedback

The problem of optimal control of non-Markovian open quantum system via weak measurement is presented. Based on the non-Markovian master equation, we evaluate exactly the non-Markovian effect on the dynamics of the system of interest interacting with a dissipative reservoir. We find that the non-Markovian reservoir has dual effects on the system: dissipation and backaction. The dissipation exhausts the coherence of the quantum system, whereas the backaction revives it. Moreover, we design the control Hamiltonian with the control laws attained by the stochastic optimal control and the corresponding optimal principle. At last, we considered the exact decoherence dynamics of a qubit in a dissipative reservoir composed of harmonic oscillators, and demonstrated the effectiveness of our optimal control strategy. Simulation results showed that the coherence will completely lost in the absence of control neither in non-Markovian nor Markovian system. However, the optimal feedback control steers it to a stationary stochastic process which fluctuates around the target. In this case the decoherence can be controlled effectively, which indicates that the engineered artificial reservoirs with optimal feedback control may be designed to protect the quantum coherence in quantum information and quantum computation.

Non-Markovian entanglement dynamics in coupled superconducting qubit systems

We theoretically analyze the entanglement generation and dynamics by coupled Josephson junction qubits. Considering a current-biased Josephson junction (CBJJ), we generate maximally entangled states. In particular, the entanglement dynamics is considered as a function of the decoherence parameters, such as the temperature, the ratio $r\equivω_c/ω_0$ between the reservoir cutoff frequency $ω_c$ and the system oscillator frequency $ω_0$, % between $ω_0$ the characteristic frequency of the %quantum system of interest, and $ω_c$ the cut-off frequency of %Ohmic reservoir and the energy levels split of the superconducting circuits in the non-Markovian master equation. We analyzed the entanglement sudden death (ESD) and entanglement sudden birth (ESB) by the non-Markovian master equation. Furthermore, we find that the larger the ratio $r$ and the thermal energy $k_BT$, the shorter the decoherence. In this superconducting qubit system we find that the entanglement can be controlled and the ESD time can be prolonged by adjusting the temperature and the superconducting phases $Φ_k$ which split the energy levels.

Probing Shock Properties with Non-thermal X-ray Filaments in Cas A

Thin non-thermal X-ray filaments are often seen in young supernova remnants. We used data from the 1 Ms Chandra observation of Cassiopeia A to study spectral properties of some of the filaments in this remnant. For all the cases that we examined, the X-ray spectrum across the filaments hardens, at about 10% level, going outward, while observed filament widths depend only weakly on the photon energy. Using a model that includes radiative cooling, advection and diffusion of accelerated particles behind the shock, we estimated the magnetic field, turbulence level and shock obliquity.

Optimal Dynamical Decoupling Sequence for Ohmic Spectrum

We investigate the optimal dynamical decoupling sequence for a qubit coupled to an ohmic environment. By analytically computing the derivatives of the decoherence function, the optimal pulse locations are found to satisfy a set of nonlinear equations which can be easily solved. These equations incorporates the environment information such as high-energy (UV) cutoff frequency ω_c, giving a complete description of the decoupling process. The solutions explain previous experimental and theoretical results of locally optimized dynamical decoupling (LODD) sequence in high-frequency dominated environment, which were obtained by purely numerical computation and experimental feedback. As shown in numerical comparison, these solutions outperform the Uhrig dynamical decoupling (UDD) sequence by one or more orders of magnitude in the ohmic case.
