The Effective Lorentzian and Teleparallel Spacetimes Generated by a Free Electromagnetic Field

In this paper we show that a free electromagnetic field living in Minkowski spacetime generates an effective Weitzenbock or an effective Lorentzian spacetime whose properties aredetermined in details. These results are possible because we found using the Clifford bundle formalism the noticeable result that the energy-momentum densities of a free electromagnetic field are sources of the Hodge duals of exact 2-form fields which satisfy Maxwell like equations.

Superposition Principle and the Problem of the Additivity of the Energies and Momenta of Distinct Electromagnetic Fields

In this paper we prove in a rigorous mathematical way (using the Clifford bundle formalism) that the energies and momenta of two distinct and arbitrary free Maxwell fields (of finite energies and momenta) that are superposed are additive and thus that there is no incompatibility between the principle of superposition of fields and the principle of energy-momentum conservation, contrary to some recent claims. Our proof depends on a noticeable formula for the energy-momentum 1-form fields T^{a},namely Riesz formula, which is valid for any electromagnetic field configuration F satisfying Maxwell equation.

The Dirac-Hestenes Equation for Spherical Symmetric Potentials in the Spherical and Cartesian Gauges

In this paper using the apparatus of the Clifford bundle formalism we show how straightforwardly solve in Minkowski spacetime the Dirac-Hestenes equation -- which is an appropriate representative in the Clifford bundle of differential forms of the usual Dirac equation -- by separation of variables for the case of a potential having spherical symmetry in the Cartesian and spherical gauges. We show that contrary to what is expected at a first sight, the solution of the DHE in both gauges has exactly the same mathematical difficulty.

A Comment on Emergent Gravity

This paper is a set of notes that we wrote concerning the first version of Emergent Gravity [gr-qc/0602022]. It is our version of an exercise that we proposed to some of our students. The idea was to find mathematical errors and inconsistencies on some recent articles published in scientific journals and in the arXiv, and we did.

Diffeomorphism Invariance and Local Lorentz Invariance

We show that diffeomorphism invariance of the Maxwell and the Dirac-Hestenes equations implies the equivalence among different universe models such that if one has a linear connection with non-null torsion and/or curvature the others have also. On the other hand local Lorentz invariance implies the surprising equivalence among different universe models that have in general different G-connections with different curvature and torsion tensors.

Algebraic and Dirac-Hestenes Spinors and Spinor Fields

Almost all presentations of Dirac theory in first or second quantization in Physics (and Mathematics) textbooks make use of covariant Dirac spinor fields. An exception is the presentation of that theory (first quantization) offered originally by Hestenes and now used by many authors. There, a new concept of spinor field (as a sum of non homogeneous even multivectors fields) is used. However, a carefully analysis (detailed below) shows that the original Hestenes definition cannot be correct since it conflicts with the meaning of the Fierz identities. In this paper we start a program dedicated to the examination of the mathematical and physical basis for a comprehensive definition of the objects used by Hestenes. In order to do that we give a preliminary definition of algebraic spinor fields (ASF) and Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields (DHSF) on Minkowski spacetime as some equivalence classes of well defined pairs of mathematical objects, one of the members of the pair being an even nonhomegeneous differential form. The necessity of our definitions are shown by a carefull analysis of possible formulations of Dirac theory and the meaning of the set of Fierz identities. We believe that the present paper clarifies some misunderstandings (past and recent) appearing on the literature of the subject. It will be followed by a sequel paper where definitive definitions of ASF and DHSF are given as appropriate sections a vector bundle called the left spin-Clifford bundle. The present paper contains also Appendices (A-E) which exhibits a truly useful collection of results concerning the theory of Clifford algebras (including many `tricks of the trade') necessary for the intelligibility of the text.

Dotted and Undotted Algebraic Spinor Fields in General Relativity

We investigate using Clifford algebra methods the theory of algebraic dotted and undotted spinor fields over a Lorentzian spacetime and their realizations as matrix spinor fields, which are the usual dotted and undotted two component spinor fields. We found that some ad hoc rules postulated for the covariant derivatives of Pauli sigma matrices and also for the Dirac gamma matrices in General Relativity cover important physical meaning, which is not apparent in the usual matrix presentation of the theory of two components dotted and undotted spinor fields. We also discuss some issues related to the the previous one and which appear in a proposed "unified" theory of gravitation and electromagnetism which use two components dotted and undotted spinor fields and also paravector fields, which are particular sections of the even subundle of the Clifford bundle of spacetime.

The Bundles of Algebraic and Dirac-Hestenes Spinor Fields

The main objective of this paper is to clarify the ontology of Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields (DHSF) and its relationship with sum of even multivector fields, on a general Riemann-Cartan spacetime admitting a spin structure and to give a mathematically rigorous derivation of the so called Dirac-Hestenes equation (DHE) when spacetime is a Lorentzian. To this aim we introduce the Clifford bundle of multivector fields (Cl(M,g)) and the left (Cl_{Spin_{1,3}^{e}}^{l}(M)) and right (Cl_{Spin_{1,3}^{e}}^{r}(M)) spin-Clifford bundles on the spin manifold (M,g) The relation between left ideal algebraic spinor fields (LIASF) and Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields (both fields are sections of Cl_{Spin_{1,3}^{e}}^{l}(M)) is clarified. We study in details the theory of the covariant derivatives of Clifford and left and right spin-Clifford fields. Moreover, we find a consistent Dirac equation for a DHSF (denoted DECl^{l}) on a Lorentzian spacetime. We succeeded also in obtaining a representation of the DECl^{l} in the Clifford bundle Cl(M,g). It is such equation that we call the DHE and it is satisfied by even multivector fields (EMFS). Of course, such a EMFS is not a spinor field. We provide moreover a consistent theory for the covariant derivatives of Clifford and spinor fields of all kinds. We emphasize that the DECl^{l} and the DHE, although related, are equations of different mathematical natures. We study also the local Lorentz invariance and the electromagnetic gauge invariance and show that only for the DHE such transformations are of the same mathematical nature, thus suggesting a possible link between them.

Metric Tensor Vs. Metric Extensor

In this paper we give a comparison between the formulation of the concept of metric for a real vector space of finite dimension in terms of \emph{tensors} and \emph{extensors}. A nice property of metric extensors is that they have inverses which are also themselves metric extensors. This property is not shared by metric tensors because tensors do \emph{not} have inverses. We relate the definition of determinant of a metric extensor with the classical determinant of the corresponding matrix associated to the metric tensor in a given vector basis. Previous identifications of these concepts are equivocated. The use of metric extensor permits sophisticated calculations without the introduction of matrix representations.

Extensors

In this paper we introduce a class of mathematical objects called \emph{extensors} and develop some aspects of their theory with considerable detail. We give special names to several particular but important cases of extensors. The \emph{extension,} \emph{adjoint} and \emph{generalization} operators are introduced and their properties studied. For the so-called $(1,1)$-extensors we define the concept of \emph{determinant}, and their properties are investigated. Some preliminary applications of the theory of extensors are presented in order to show the power of the new concept in action. An useful formula for the inversion of $(1,1)$-extensors is obtained.
