A New High-Intensity Source for Ultracold Neutrons
The TRIUMF UltraCold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration has completed a new superthermal source for ultracold neutrons (UCNs) at TRIUMF. Neutrons produced in a spallation target are moderated in heavy water and liquid deuterium, and are converted to ultracold neutrons by inelastic scattering inside superfluid $^4$He at around 1.1 K. During commissioning of the completed moderation and conversion system, including the liquid-deuterium moderator, up to $1.47(2)\times 10^7$ UCNs were detected outside the source in the experimental area following a 60 s accumulation period. At the same location, continuous operation produced detector rates of up to $6.75(3)\times 10^7$ UCN/s, and a density of 165.6(1) UCN/cm$^3$ was achieved in a 25.4 L external vessel. These measurements demonstrate high-intensity operation of a spallation-driven He-II UCN source, including extraction and transport to an external experimental area.
