Apodex 1.1: Scaling Agentic Intelligence for Complex Work

General-purpose language models can reason and synthesize knowledge, but complex work also requires sustained interaction with files, information sources, and executable code, together with state maintenance, failure recovery, and verifiable delivery. We call this \emph{working capability}: sustained, verifiable progress toward a real-world objective. Apodex 1.1 develops this capability along two complementary dimensions. \emph{Environment Scaling} expands the diversity and verifiability of executable file, search, and code environments, while \emph{Agentic Coordination Scaling} trains agents to decompose long-horizon tasks, delegate parallel work, integrate asynchronous results, and replan. A shared execution harness and AgentOS maintain task state and provenance across tools and agents, and training turns environment trajectories and coordination traces into reliable behavior. Across complex professional work, finance, scientific research, mathematics, coding, and search, Apodex 1.1 reaches the leading performance band despite using a substantially smaller model than many frontier systems. The 35B-parameter Apodex 1.1 Mini further retains strong working capability in a locally deployable form. These results ground agentic intelligence in useful, verifiable work completed over time and advance our goal of building a \emph{Heavy-Duty Solver} for ambitious, long-running tasks.

Privacy-Preserving Brain-Computer Interfaces: A Systematic Review

A brain-computer interface (BCI) establishes a direct communication pathway between the human brain and a computer. It has been widely used in medical diagnosis, rehabilitation, education, entertainment, etc. Most research so far focuses on making BCIs more accurate and reliable, but much less attention has been paid to their privacy. Developing a commercial BCI system usually requires close collaborations among multiple organizations, e.g., hospitals, universities, and/or companies. Input data in BCIs, e.g., electroencephalogram (EEG), contain rich privacy information, and the developed machine learning model is usually proprietary. Data and model transmission among different parties may incur significant privacy threats, and hence privacy protection in BCIs must be considered. Unfortunately, there does not exist any contemporary and comprehensive review on privacy-preserving BCIs. This paper fills this gap, by describing potential privacy threats and protection strategies in BCIs. It also points out several challenges and future research directions in developing privacy-preserving BCIs.

Modified Gravity Constraints from the Full Shape Modeling of Clustering Measurements from DESI 2024

We present cosmological constraints on deviations from general relativity (GR) from the first-year of clustering observations from Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) in combination with other datasets. We first consider $\mu(a,k)$-$\Sigma(a,k)$ modified gravity (MG) parametrization (as well as $\eta(a,k)$) in flat $\Lambda$CDM and $w_0 w_a$CDM backgrounds. Using a functional form for time-only evolution gives $\mu_0=0.11^{+0.44}_{-0.54}$ from DESI(FS+BAO)+BBN and a wide prior on $n_{s}$. Using DESI(FS+BAO)+CMB+DESY3+DESY5-SN, we obtain $\mu_0=0.05\pm 0.22$ and $\Sigma_0=0.008\pm 0.045$ in the $\Lambda$CDM background. In $w_0 w_a$CDM, we obtain $\mu_0=-0.24^{+0.32}_{-0.28}$ and $\Sigma_0=0.006\pm 0.043$, consistent with GR, and still find a preference for dynamical dark energy with $w_0>-1$ and $w_a<0$. We then use binned forms in the 2 backgrounds starting with 2 bins in redshift and then adding 2 bins in scale for a total of 4 and 8 MG parameters, respectively. All MG parameters are found consistent with GR. We also find that the tension reported for $\Sigma_0$ with GR from Planck PR3 goes away when using LoLLiPoP+HiLLiPoP likelihoods. As noted previously, this seems to indicate the tension is related to CMB lensing anomaly in PR3 which is also resolved when using these likelihoods. We then constrain the class of Horndeski theory in both EFT-basis and $\alpha$-basis. Assuming a power law for the non-minimal coupling function $\Omega$, we obtain $\Omega_0=0.012^{+0.001}_{-0.012}$ and $s_0=0.996^{+0.54}_{-0.20}$ from DESI(FS+BAO)+DESY5SN+CMB in a $\Lambda$CDM background, consistent with GR. Using the $\alpha$-basis with no-braiding ($\alpha_B=0$) gives $c_M<1.14$, in agreement with GR. However, we see a mild yet consistent indication for $c_B>0$ when $\alpha_B$ is varied which will require further study to determine whether this is due to systematics or new physics. [Abridged]

Breakdown of the drift-diffusion model for transverse spin transport in a disordered Pt film

Spin accumulation and spin current profiles are calculated for a disordered Pt film subjected to an in-plane electric current within the nonequilibrium Green function approach. In the bulklike region of the sample, this approach captures the intrinsic spin Hall effect found in other calculations. Near the surfaces, the results reveal qualitative differences with the results of the widely used spin-diffusion model, even when the boundary conditions are modified to try to account for them. One difference is that the effective spin-diffusion length for transverse spin transport is significantly different from its longitudinal counterpart and is instead similar to the mean-free path. This feature may be generic for spin currents generated via the intrinsic spin-Hall mechanism because of the differences in transport mechanisms compared to longitudinal spin transport. Orbital accumulation in the Pt film is only significant in the immediate vicinity of the surfaces and has a small component penetrating into the bulk only in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, as a secondary effect induced by the spin accumulation.

Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy in antiferromagnetic MgO-capped MnPt films

The magnetic anisotropy in MgO-capped MnPt films and its voltage control are studied using first-principles calculations. Sharp variation of the magnetic anisotropy with film thickness, especially in the Pt-terminated film, suggests that it may be widely tuned by adjusting the film thickness. In thick films the linear voltage control coefficient is as large as 1.5 and $-0.6$ pJ/Vm for Pt-terminated and Mn-terminated interfaces, respectively. The combination of a widely tunable magnetic anisotropy energy and a large voltage-control coefficient suggest that MgO-capped MnPt films can serve as a versatile platform for magnetic memory and antiferromagnonic applications.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) - 2018 Summary Report

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. First beams would be available by 2035, marking the beginning of a broad CLIC physics programme spanning 25-30 years.

Simultaneous Deep Tunneling and Classical Hopping for Hydrogen Diffusion on Metals

Hydrogen diffusion on metals exhibits rich quantum behavior, which is not yet fully understood. Using simulations, we show that many hydrogen diffusion barriers can be categorized into those with "parabolic-tops" and those with "broad-tops". With parabolic-top barriers, hydrogen diffusion evolves gradually from classical hopping to shallow tunneling to deep tunneling as the temperature decreases, and noticeable quantum effects persist at moderate temperatures. In contrast, with broad-top barriers quantum effects become important only at low temperatures and the classical to quantum transition is sharp, at which classical hopping and deep tunneling both occur. This coexistence indicates that more than one mechanism contributes to the quantum reaction rate. The conventional definition of the classical to quantum crossover temperature is invalid for the broad-tops, and we give a new definition. Extending this we propose a model to predict the transition temperature for broad-top diffusion, providing a general guide for theory and experiment.

Updated baseline for a staged Compact Linear Collider

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. For the first stage, an alternative to the CLIC drive beam scheme is presented in which the main linac power is produced using X-band klystrons.

Observation of suppressed terahertz absorption in photoexcited graphene

When light is absorbed by a semiconductor, photoexcited charge carriers enhance the absorption of far-infrared radiation due to intraband transitions. We observe the opposite behavior in monolayer graphene, a zero-gap semiconductor with linear dispersion. By using time domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy in conjunction with optical pump excitation, we observe a reduced absorption of THz radiation in photoexcited graphene. The measured spectral shape of the differential optical conductivity exhibits non-Drude behavior. We discuss several possible mechanisms that contribute to the observed low-frequency non-equilibrium optical response of graphene.

Parametrization of Born-Infeld Type Phantom Dark Energy Model

Applying the parametrization of dark energy density, we can construct directly independent-model potentials. In Born-Infeld type phantom dark energy model, we consider four special parametrization equation of state parameter. The evolutive behavior of dark energy density with respect to red-shift $z$, potentials with respect to $ϕ$ and $z$ are shown mathematically. Moreover, we investigate the effect of parameter $η$ upon the evolution of the constructed potential with respect to $z$. These results show that the evolutive behavior of constructed Born-Infeld type dark energy model is quite different from those of the other models.

Chaotic Microcavity Laser with Low threshold and Unidirectional Output

Here we report lasing action in limaçon-shaped GaAs microdisks with quantum dots (QDs) embedded. Although the intracavity ray dynamics is predominantly chaotic, high-$Q$ modes are concentrated in the region $χ> χ_c$ as a result of wave localization. Strong optical confinement by total internal reflection leads to very low lasing threshold. Our measurements show that all the lasing modes have output in the same direction, regardless of their wavelengths and intracavity mode structures. This universal emission direction is determined by directed phase space flow of optical rays in the open chaotic cavity. The divergence angle of output beam is less than 40 degree. The unidirectionality proves to be robust against small deviations of the real cavity shape and size from the designed values.

Statefinder Diagnostic for Dilaton Dark Energy

Statefinder diagnostic is a useful method which can differ one dark energy model from the others. The Statefinder pair $\{r, s\}$ is algebraically related to the equation of state of dark energy and its first time derivative. We apply in this paper this method to the dilaton dark energy model based on Weyl-Scaled induced gravitational theory. We investigate the effect of the coupling between matter and dilaton when the potential of dilaton field is taken as the Mexican hat form. We find that the evolving trajectory of our model in the $r-s$ diagram is quite different from those of other dark energy models.

The Consistent Result of Cosmological Constant From Quantum Cosmology and Inflation with Born-Infeld Scalar Field

The Quantum cosmology with Born-Infeld(B-I) type scalar field is considered. In the extreme limits of small cosmological scale factor the wave function of the universe can also be obtained by applying the methods developed by Hartle-Hawking(H-H) and Vilenkin. H-H wave function predicts that most Probable cosmological constant $Λ$ equals to $\frac{1}η$($\frac{1}{2η}$ equals to the maximum of the kinetic energy of scalar field). It is different from the original results($Λ=0$) in cosmological constant obtained by Hartle-Hawking. The Vilenkin wave function predicts a nucleating unverse with largest possible cosmological constant and it is larger than $1/η$. The conclusions have been nicely to reconcile with cosmic inflation. We investigate the inflation model with B-I type scalar field, and find that $η$ depends on the amplitude of tensor perturbation $δ_h$, with the form $\frac{1}η\simeq \frac{m^2}{12π[(\frac{9δ_Φ^2}{N δ_h^2})^2-1]}.$ The vacuum energy in inflation epoch depends on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $\frac{δ_h}{δ_Φ}$. The amplitude of the tensor perturbation ${δ_{h}}$ can, in principle, be large enough to be discovered. However, it is only on the border of detectability in future experiments. If it has been observed in future, this is very interesting to determine the vacuum energy in inflation epoch.

Potentials of Coupled Quintessence Based on a Dilaton

In this paper, we regard dilaton in Weyl-scaled induced gravitational theory as coupled Quintessence, which is called DCQ model by us. Parametrization of the dark energy model is a good method by which we can construct the scalar potential directly from the effective equation of state function $ω_σ(z)$ describing the properties of the dark energy. Applying this method to the DCQ model, we consider four parametrizations of $ω(z)$ and investigate the features of the constructed DCQ potentials, which possess two different evolutive behaviors called "O" mode and "E" mode. Lastly, we comprise the results of the constructed DCQ model with those of quintessence model numerically.

Tuning the shape of semiconductor microstadium laser

We presented a detailed experimental study on lasing in GaAs microstadium with various shapes. Unlike most deformed microcavities, the lasing threshold varies non-monotonically with the major-to-minor-axis ratio of the stadium. Under spatially uniform optical pumping, the first lasing mode corresponds to a high-quality scar mode consisting of several unstable periodic orbits. By tuning the shape of GaAs stadium, we are able to minimize the lasing threshold. This work demonstrates the possibility of controlling chaotic microcavity laser.

Wave interference effect on polymer microstadium laser

We investigate the lasing modes in fully chaotic polymer microstadiums under optical pumping. The lasing modes are regularly spaced in frequency, and their amplitudes oscillate with frequency. Our numerical simulations reveal that the lasing modes are multi-orbit scar modes. The interference of partial waves propagating along the constituent orbits results in local maxima of quality factor at certain frequencies. The observed modulation of lasing mode amplitude with frequency results from the variation of quality factor, which provides the direct evidence of wave interference effect in open chaotic microcavities.

The influence of a single quantum dot state on the characteristics of a microdisk laser

We report a quantum dot microcavity laser with a cw sub-microwatt lasing threshold, where a significant reduction of the lasing threshold is observed when a single quantum dot (QD) state is aligned with a cavity mode. The quality factor exceeds 15 000 before the system lases. When no QD states are resonant, below threshold the cavity mode initially degrades with increasing pump power, after which saturation occurs and then the cavity mode recovers. We associate the initial cavity mode spoiling with QD state broadening that occurs with increasing pump power.

Dilaton Coupled Quintessence Model in the $ω-ω'$ Plane

In this paper, we regard dilaton in Weyl-scaled induced gravitational theory as a coupled quintessence. Based on this consideration, we investigate the dilaton coupled quintessence(DCQ) model in $ω-ω'$ plane, which is defined by the equation of state parameter for the dark energy and its derivative with respect to $N$(the logarithm of the scale factor $a$). We find the scalar field equation of motion in $ω-ω'$ plane, and show mathematically the property of attractor solutions which correspond to $ω_σ\sim-1$, $Ω_σ=1$. Finally, we find that our model is a tracking one which belongs to "freezing" type model classified in $ω-ω'$ plane.
