The number of cliques in hypergraphs with forbidden subgraphs

We study the maximum number of $r$-vertex cliques in $(r-1)$-uniform hypergraphs not containing complete $r$-partite hypergraphs $K_r^{(r-1)}(a_1, \dots, a_r)$. By using the hypergraph removal lemma, we show that this maximum is $o( n^{r - 1/(a_1 \cdots a_{r-1})} )$. This immediately implies the corresponding results of Mubayi and Mukherjee and of Balogh, Jiang, and Luo for graphs. We also provide a lower bound by using hypergraph Tur\'an numbers.

The Minimum Number of Edges in Uniform Hypergraphs with Property O

An oriented k-uniform hypergraph (a family of ordered k-sets) has the ordering property (or Property O) if for every linear order of the vertex set, there is some edge oriented consistently with the linear order. We find bounds on the minimum number of edges in a hypergraph with Property O.

On the size-Ramsey number of hypergraphs

The size-Ramsey number of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges in a graph $H$ such that every 2-edge-coloring of $H$ yields a monochromatic copy of $G$. Size-Ramsey numbers of graphs have been studied for almost 40 years with particular focus on the case of trees and bounded degree graphs. We initiate the study of size-Ramsey numbers for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Analogous to the graph case, we consider the size-Ramsey number of cliques, paths, trees, and bounded degree hypergraphs. Our results suggest that size-Ramsey numbers for hypergraphs are extremely difficult to determine, and many open problems remain.

Hypergraph Ramsey numbers: tight cycles versus cliques

For $s \ge 4$, the 3-uniform tight cycle $C^3_s$ has vertex set corresponding to $s$ distinct points on a circle and edge set given by the $s$ cyclic intervals of three consecutive points. For fixed $s \ge 4$ and $s \not\equiv 0$ (mod 3) we prove that there are positive constants $a$ and $b$ with $$2^{at} 5$ is proved by using supersaturation and the known upper bound for $r(K_4^{3}, K_t^3)$, while for $s=5$ it follows from a new upper bound for $r(K_5^{3-}, K_t^3)$ that we develop.

Let M be a subset of {0, .., n} and F be a family of subsets of an n element set such that the size of A intersection B is in M for every A, B in F. Suppose that l is the maximum number of consecutive integers contained in M and n is sufficiently large. Then we prove that |F| < min {1.622^n 100^l, 2^{n/2+l log^2 n}}. The first bound complements the previous bound of roughly (1.99)^n due to Frankl and the second author which applies even when M={0, 1,.., n} - {n/4}. For small l, the second bound above becomes better than the first bound. In this case, it yields 2^{n/2+o(n)} and this can be viewed as a generalization (in an asymptotic sense) of the famous Eventown theorem of Berlekamp. Our second result complements the result of Frankl-Rodl in a different direction. Fix eps>0 and eps n < t < n/5 and let M={0, 1, .., n)-(t, t+n^{0.525}). Then, in the notation above, we prove that for n sufficiently large, |F| < n{n \choose (n+t)/2}. This is essentially sharp aside from the multiplicative factor of n. The short proof uses the Frankl-Wilson theorem and results about the distribution of prime numbers.

Large matchings in uniform hypergraphs and the conjectures of Erdos and Samuels

In this paper we study conditions which guarantee the existence of perfect matchings and perfect fractional matchings in uniform hypergraphs. We reduce this problem to an old conjecture by Erd\H{o}s on estimating the maximum number of edges in a hypergraph when the (fractional) matching number is given, which we are able to solve in some special cases using probabilistic techniques. Based on these results, we obtain some general theorems on the minimum $d$-degree ensuring the existence of perfect (fractional) matchings. In particular, we asymptotically determine the minimum vertex degree which guarantees a perfect matching in 4-uniform and 5-uniform hypergraphs. We also discuss an application to a problem of finding an optimal data allocation in a distributed storage system.

A sharp threshold for random graphs with a monochromatic triangle in every edge coloring

Let $\R$ be the set of all finite graphs $G$ with the Ramsey property that every coloring of the edges of $G$ by two colors yields a monochromatic triangle. In this paper we establish a sharp threshold for random graphs with this property. Let $G(n,p)$ be the random graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$. We prove that there exists a function $\hat c=\hat c(n)$ with $0 0$, as $n$ tends to infinity $$Pr[G(n,(1-\eps)\hat c/\sqrt{n}) \in \R ] \to 0$$ and $$Pr [ G(n,(1+\eps)\hat c/\sqrt{n}) \in \R ] \to 1.$$ A crucial tool that is used in the proof and is of independent interest is a generalization of Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma to a certain hypergraph setting.
