Lack of self-averaging of the critical internal energy in a weakly-disordered Baxter model

We investigate the first two moments of the critical internal energy $E$ in a weakly disordered two-dimensional Baxter eight-vertex model as a function of the system size $L$, evaluated at the pseudo-critical point. Disorder is introduced via an equivalent representation of the pure eight-vertex model in terms of two ferromagnetic Ising models coupled by a four-spin interaction of strength $g_0$, where the Ising couplings consist of a uniform ferromagnetic part $J>0$ supplemented by weak Gaussian spatial disorder. In the critical regime, the model is formulated in terms of interacting Grassmann-Majorana spinor fields with quartic interactions and analyzed, for small positive $g_0$, using a combination of replica and renormalization-group methods. We also run extensive numerical simulations measuring the critical internal energy. Our results show that its relative variance increases with $L$ and approaches a finite constant as $L \to \infty$ for both $\pm g_0$. Hence, fluctuations remain relevant independently of the sign of $g_0$ (and thus of the specific-heat exponent), implying a lack of self-averaging of both the critical internal energy and the free energy. Consequently, reliable estimates of these quantities require averaging over many disorder realizations. In addition, we numerically confirm earlier predictions concerning the absence of self-averaging of the critical internal energy in the disordered Ising model.

Inferring Concepts from Noisy Examples in Hopfield-like Neural Networks

We study a variant of the pseudo-inverse learning rule for Hopfield-like Neural Networks, which allows the network to infer archetypal concepts on the basis of a limited number of examples. The mean-field replica theory for this model reveals how this generalization ability is mediated by a multitude of states, with diverse thermodynamic properties, coexisting with the standard Hopfield ones. They appear and vanish through smooth transitions or discontinuous jumps and, interestingly, show much stronger Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) effects than the standard Hopfield model, as captured by our 1RSB analysis. Our results, in excellent agreement with numerical simulations, provide deeper insight into the interplay between memory storage and generalization in attractor neural networks.

Scaling properties of (2+1) directed polymers in the low temperature limit

In terms of the replica method we consider the low temperature limit of (2+1) directed polymers in a random potential. The proposed approach allows to compute the scaling exponent $\theta$ of the free energy fluctuations as well as the left tail of its probability distribution function. It is argued that $\theta = 1/4$ which is slightly different from the zero-temperature numerical value which is close to $0.241$.

Irregular gyration of a two-dimensional random-acceleration process in a confining potential

We study the stochastic dynamics of a two-dimensional particle assuming that the components of its position are two coupled random-acceleration processes evolving in a confining parabolic potential and are the subjects of independent Gaussian white noises with different amplitudes (temperatures). We determine the standard characteristic properties, i.e., the moments of position's components and their velocities, mixed moments and two-time correlations, as well as the position-velocity probability density function (pdf). We show that if the amplitudes of the noises are not equal, then the particle experiences a non-zero (on average) torque, such that the angular momentum L and the angular velocity W have non-zero mean values. Both are (irregularly) oscillating with time t, such that the characteristics of a rotational motion are changing their signs. We also evaluate the pdf-s of L and W and show that the former has exponential tails for any fixed t, and hence, all moments. In addition, in the large-time limit this pdf converges to a uniform distribution with a diverging variance. The pdf of W possesses heavy power-law tails such that the mean W is the only existing moment. This pdf converges to a limiting form which, surprisingly, is completely independent of the amplitudes of noises.

One dimensional directed polymer "memory model"

In this paper I propose very simple statistical "memory model" of one-dimensional directed polymers which is capable to store and retrieve a given random quenched trajectory. The model is defined in terms of the elastic string Hamiltonian with the local attractive potential between the dynamic and the quenched random strings. The average overlap between them is calculated as a function of the temperature and the strength of the attractive potential.

On the scaling properties of (2+1) directed polymers in the high temperature limit

In this paper in terms of the replica method we consider the high temperature limit of (2+1) directed polymers in a random potential and propose an approach which allows to compute the scaling exponent $\theta$ of the free energy fluctuations as well as the left tail of its probability distribution function. It is argued that $\theta = 1/2$ which is different from the zero-temperature numerical value which is close to 0.241. This result implies that unlike the $(1+1)$ system in the two-dimensional case the free energy scaling exponent is non-universal being temperature dependent.

Recognition Capabilities of a Hopfield Model with Auxiliary Hidden Neurons

We study the recognition capabilities of the Hopfield model with auxiliary hidden layers, which emerge naturally upon a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. We show that the recognition capabilities of such a model at zero-temperature outperform those of the original Hopfield model, due to a substantial increase of the storage capacity and the lack of a naturally defined basin of attraction. The modified model does not fall abruptly in a regime of complete confusion when memory load exceeds a sharp threshold.

Time-dependence of the effective temperatures of a two-dimensional Brownian gyrator with cold and hot components

We consider a model of a two-dimensional molecular machine - called Brownian gyrator - that consists of two coordinates coupled to each other and to separate heat baths at temperatures respectively $T_x$ and $T_y$. We consider the limit in which one component is passive, because its bath is "cold", $T_x \to 0$, while the second is in contact with a "hot" bath, $T_y > 0$, hence it entrains the passive component in a stochastic motion. We derive an asymmetry relation as a function of time, from which time dependent effective temperatures can be obtained for both components. We find that the effective temperature of the passive element tends to a constant value, which is a fraction of $T_y$, while the effective temperature of the driving component grows without bounds, in fact exponentially in time, as the steady-state is approached.

Asymmetry relations and effective temperatures for biased Brownian gyrators

We focus on a paradigmatic two-dimensional model of a nanoscale heat engine, - the so-called Brownian gyrator - whose stochastic dynamics is described by a pair of coupled Langevin equations with different temperature noise terms. This model is known to produce a curl-carrying non-equilibrium steady-state with persistent angular rotations. We generalize the original model introducing constant forces doing work on the gyrator, for which we derive exact asymmetry relations, that are reminiscent of the standard fluctuation relations. Unlike the latter, our relations concern instantaneous and not time averaged values of the observables of interest. We investigate the full two-dimensional dynamics as well as the dynamics projected on the $x$- and $y$-axes, so that information about the state of the system can be obtained from just a part of its degrees of freedom. Such a state is characterized by effective "temperatures" that can be measured in nanoscale devices, but do not have a thermodynamic nature. Remarkably, the effective temperatures appearing in full dynamics are distinctly different from the ones emerging in its projections, confirming that they are not thermodynamic quantities, although they precisely characterize the state of the system.

Velocity distribution functions and intermittency in one-dimensional randomly forced Burgers turbulence

The problem of one-dimensional randomly forced Burgers turbulence is considered in terms of (1+1) directed polymers. In the limit of strong turbulence (which corresponds to the zero temperature limit for the directed polymer system) using the replica technique a general explicit expression for the joint distribution function of two velocities separated by a finite distance is derived. In particular, it is shown that at length scales much smaller than the injection length of the Burgers random force the moments of the velocity increment exhibit typical strong intermittency behavior.

Statistical properties of one-dimensional directed polymers in a random potential

This review is devoted to the detailed consideration of the universal statistical properties of one-dimensional directed polymers in a random potential. In terms of the replica Bethe ansatz technique we derive several exact results for different types of the free energy probability distribution functions. In the second part of the review we discuss the problems which are still waiting for their solutions. Several mathematical appendices in the ending part of the review contain various technical details of the performed calculations.

Self-averaging in the random 2D Ising ferromagnet

We study sample-to-sample fluctuations in a critical two-dimensional Ising model with quenched random ferromagnetic couplings. Using replica calculations in the renormalization group framework we derive explicit expressions for the probability distribution function of the critical internal energy and for the specific heat fluctuations. It is shown that the disorder distribution of internal energies is Gaussian, and the typical sample-to-sample fluctuations as well as the average value scale with the system size $L$ like $\sim L \ln\ln(L)$. In contrast, the specific heat is shown to be self-averaging with a distribution function that tends to a $\delta$-peak in the thermodynamic limit $L \to \infty$. While previously a lack of self-averaging was found for the free energy, we here obtain results for quantities that are directly measurable in simulations, and implications for measurements in the actual lattice system are discussed.

Two-temperature statistics of free energies in (1+1) directed polymers

The joint statistical properties of two free energies computed at two different temperatures in {\it the same sample} of $(1+1)$ directed polymers is studied in terms of the replica technique. The scaling dependence of the reduced free energies difference ${\cal F} = F(T_{1})/T_{1} - F(T_{2})/T_{2}$ on the two temperatures $T_{1}$ and $T_{2}$ is derived. In particular, it is shown that if the two temperatures $T_{1} \, < \, T_{2}$ are close to each other the typical value of the fluctuating part of the reduced free energies difference ${\cal F}$ is proportional to $(1 - T_{1}/T_{2})^{1/3}$. It is also shown that the left tail asymptotics of this free energy difference probability distribution function coincides with the corresponding tail of the TW distribution.

Zero temperature limit for (1+1) directed polymers with correlated random potential

Zero temperature limit in (1+1) directed polymers with finite range correlated random potential is studied. In terms of the standard replica technique it is demonstrated that in this limit the considered system reveals the one-step replica symmetry breaking structure similar to the one which takes place in the Random Energy Model. In particular, it is shown that at the temperature $T_{*} \sim (u R)^{1/3}$ (where $u$ and $R$ are the strength and the correlation length of the random potential) there is a crossover from the high- to the low-temperature regime. Namely, in the high-temperature regime at $T >> T_{*}$ the model is equivalent to the one with the $\delta$-correlated potential where the non-universal prefactor of the free energy is proportional to $T^{-2/3}$, while at $T << T_{*}$ this non-universal prefactor saturates at a finite (temperature independent) value.

Two-time free energy distribution function in the KPZ problem

The explicit expression for the two time free energy distribution function in one-dimensional random directed polymers is derived in terms of the Bethe ansatz replica technique. It is show that such type of the distribution function can be represented in the form of a generalized "two-dimensional" Fredholm determinant.

Two-time distribution functions in the Gaussian model of randomly forced Burgers turbulence

The problem of randomly forced Burgers turbulence ("Burgulence") is considered in terms of the toy Gaussian Larkin model of directed polymers. In terms of the replica technique the explicit expressions for the two-time four-point free energy distribution function is obtained which makes possible to derive the exact result for the two-time velocity distribution function in the corresponding Burgulence problem.

Universal free-energy distribution in the critical point of a random Ising ferromagnet

We discuss the non-self-averaging phenomena in the critical point of weakly disordered Ising ferromagnet. In terms of the renormalized replica Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian in dimensions D <4, we derive an explicit expression for the probability distribution function (PDF) of the critical free energy fluctuations. In particular, using known fixed-point values for the renormalized coupling parameters, we obtain the universal curve for such PDF in the dimension D=3. It is demonstrated that this function is strongly asymmetric: its left tail is much slower than the right one.
