CoLa-ICD: A Knowledge-Enhanced Framework for Long-Tail Automated Medical Coding

Automatic medical coding assigns ICD codes to clinical notes, but it remains challenging due to long documents, imbalanced label distributions, and diverse terms. These challenges are especially severe for rare codes, which have limited training instances and are easily confused with semantically similar labels. We introduce CoLa-ICD, a knowledge-enhanced framework for long-tail prediction. CoLa-ICD enriches ICD labels with external terms, models dependencies among related codes, and learns stronger alignment between label semantics and clinical evidence for long-tail prediction. Experiments show that CoLa-ICD improves long-tail prediction with larger gains in larger and sparser label spaces and achieves state-of-the-art performance in AUC, F1, and P@k. Our code is available at https://github.com/youwillbethebest/Cola-ICD.

Divergent large language model predictions from convergent representations in ambiguous word pairs

In this work we investigate how decoder-only transformers resolve lexical ambiguity through layer-by-layer analysis of three models spanning three parameter sizes (GPT-2-Small-117M, Llama-3.2-3B, Qwen2.5-32B). For both homonyms and polysemes, we find that representations become maximally distinct in middle layers, then partially reconverge in late layers, while the KL divergence between their next-token predictions reaches its maximum in the final layers. The activation patching experiment provides causal evidence that late-layer representational differences directly determine outputs despite apparent increased similarity in embedding space. Our single-layer ablation experiment indicates that models achieve equivalent disambiguation despite qualitatively different layer-wise vulnerabilities. These findings offer a mechanism for recent observations where models' internal embedding similarities show low correlation with their behavioural outputs despite strong performance. The semantic distinctions therefore remain present but become increasingly invisible to similarity measures over the embeddings, with implications for embedding-based methods such as semantic search, retrieval, and clustering that rely on late-layer cosine similarity.

NewsTorch: A PyTorch-based Toolkit for Learner-oriented News Recommendation

News recommender systems are devised to alleviate the information overload, attracting more and more researchers' attention in recent years. The lack of a dedicated learner-oriented news recommendation toolkit hinders the advancement of research in news recommendation. We propose a PyTorch-based news recommendation toolkit called NewsTorch, developed to support learners in acquiring both conceptual understanding and practical experience. This toolkit provides a modular, decoupled, and extensible framework with a learner-friendly GUI platform that supports dataset downloading and preprocessing. It also enables training, validation, and testing of state-of-the-art neural news recommendation models with standardized evaluation metrics, ensuring fair comparison and reproducible experiments. Our open-source toolkit is released on Github: https://github.com/whonor/NewsTorch.

A Survey on LLM-based News Recommender Systems

News recommender systems play a critical role in mitigating the information overload problem. In recent years, due to the successful applications of large language model technologies, researchers have utilized Discriminative Large Language Models (DLLMs) or Generative Large Language Models (GLLMs) to improve the performance of news recommender systems. Although several recent surveys review significant challenges for deep learning-based news recommender systems, such as fairness, privacy-preserving, and responsibility, there is a lack of a systematic survey on Large Language Model (LLM)-based news recommender systems. In order to review different core methodologies and explore potential issues systematically, we categorize DLLM-based and GLLM-based news recommender systems under the umbrella of LLM-based news recommender systems. In this survey, we first overview the development of deep learning-based news recommender systems. Then, we review LLM-based news recommender systems based on three aspects: news-oriented modeling, user-oriented modeling, and prediction-oriented modeling. Next, we examine the challenges from various perspectives, including datasets, benchmarking tools, and methodologies. Furthermore, we conduct extensive experiments to analyze how large language model technologies affect the performance of different news recommender systems. Finally, we comprehensively explore the future directions for LLM-based news recommendations in the era of LLMs.
