K-theory of Weighted Blowups

We compute the K-theory of weighted blowups of smooth stacks satisfying the resolution property along smooth centers. As an application, we determine the K-theory of the stack of stable genus 1 curves with 2 marked points. Furthermore, we express the Lambda polynomial of the tangent complex of the blowup morphism in terms of the blowup data. Along the way, we generalize the Anderson-Payne construction of equivariant operational K-theory from torus actions to actions of smooth affine algebraic groups.

Logarithmic Hilbert schemes of curves as weighted blow-ups and their integral Chow rings

The logarithmic Hilbert scheme of a logarithmic curve parametrizes subschemes on the expanded degenerations of the curve that are transverse to the boundary. We prove that the logarithmic Hilbert scheme of points on a smooth pointed curve is an iterated weighted blow-up of the symmetric product of the underlying curve. In doing so, we explicitly identify the blow-up centers, weights, and give them modular interpretations. As applications, we calculate their integral Chow rings in terms of those of the symmetric products. Key ingredients in our work include two recent results: the integral Chow ring formula of weighted blow-ups and a weighted analogue of Castelnuovo's criterion for blow-downs. We recover the folklore result the logarithmic Hilbert scheme of toric $\mathbb{P}^1$ is a toric stack, and the Appendix by Dhruv Ranganathan outlines a complementary approach using Chow quotients.

Holomorphic forms and non-tautological cycles on moduli spaces of curves

We prove, for infinitely many values of $g$ and $n$, the existence of non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of smooth, genus-$g$, $n$-pointed curves. In particular, when $n=0$, our results show that there exist non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on $\mathcal{M}_g$ for $g=12$ and all $g \geq 16$. These results generalize the work of Graber--Pandharipande and van Zelm, who proved that the classes of particular loci of bielliptic curves are non-tautological and thereby exhibited the only previously-known non-tautological class on any $\mathcal{M}_g$: the bielliptic cycle on $\mathcal{M}_{12}$. We extend their work by using the existence of holomorphic forms on certain moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ to produce non-tautological classes with nontrivial restriction to the interior, via which we conclude that the classes of many new double-cover loci are non-tautological.

A criterion for smooth weighted blow-downs

We establish a criterion for determining when a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack is a weighted blow-up. More precisely, given a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack $\mathcal{X}$ and a Cartier divisor $\mathcal{E} \subset \mathcal{X}$ such that (1) $\mathcal{E}$ is a weighted projective bundle over a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack $\mathcal{Y}$ and (2) for every $y\in\mathcal{Y}$ we have $\mathcal{O}_{\mathcal{X}}(\mathcal{E})|_{\mathcal{E}_y}\simeq \mathcal{O}_{\mathcal{E}_y}(-1)$, then there exists a contraction $\mathcal{X}\to\mathcal{Z}$ to a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack $\mathcal{Z}$. Moreover, the stack $\mathcal{X}$ can be recovered as a weighted blow-up along $\mathcal{Y}\subset \mathcal{Z}$ with exceptional divisor $\mathcal{E}$, and $\mathcal{Z}$ is a pushout in the category of algebraic stacks. As an application, we show that the moduli stack $\overline{\mathscr{M}}_{1,n}$ of stable $n$-pointed genus one curves is a weighted blow-up of the stack of pseudo-stable curves. Along the way we also prove a reconstruction result for smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks that is of independent interest.

The integral Chow ring of weighted blow-ups

We give a formula for the integral Chow rings of weighted blow-ups. Along the way, we also compute the integral Chow rings of weighted projective stack bundles, a formula for the Gysin homomorphism of a weighted blow-up, and a generalization of the splitting principle. In addition, in the appendix we compute the Chern class of a weighted blow-up.

Intersection Theory on Weighted Blowups of F-theory Vacua

Generalizing the results of 1211.6077 and 1703.00905, we prove a formula for the pushforward of an arbitrary analytic function of the exceptional divisor class of a weighted blowup of an algebraic variety centered at a smooth complete intersection with normal crossing. We check this formula extensively by computing the generating function of intersection numbers of a weighted blowup of the generic SU(5) Tate model over arbitrary smooth base, and comparing the answer to known results. Motivated by applications to four-dimensional F-theory flux compactifications, we use our formula to compute the intersection pairing on the vertical part of the middle cohomology of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds resolving the generic F$_4$ and Sp(6) Tate models with non-minimal singularities. These resolutions lead to non-flat fibrations in which certain fibers contain 3-fold (divisor) components, whose physical interpretation in M/F-theory remains to be fully explored.
