Mechanisms for extreme events in position-dependent mass systems

Oscillators defined on curved spaces provide a natural framework for exploring geometry-induced nonlinear dynamics. The two-dimensional Mathews-Lakshmanan oscillator and Higgs oscillator are prominent examples of geometrically induced nonlinear oscillators. The two-dimensional Higgs oscillator in flat space arises from a conformal (stereographic) projection of the harmonic oscillator on the sphere S2 onto the two-dimensional plane. Its one-dimensional counterpart, defined by a non-Euclidean geometry with curvature parameter, exhibits chaotic dynamics and extreme events (EEs) when subjected to damping and external driving forces [1]. In this work, we introduce coupling through mass interaction among multiple one-dimensional damped and forced Higgs oscillators and investigate the resulting collective nonlinear dynamics within a many-particle framework. More importantly, we establish the connection between the conformal mass m(x) and the extrema of velocity through a power-law relation, demonstrating how the conformal mass regulates the turning points leading to the emergence of extreme events (EEs). Furthermore, to provide additional insight into the underlying mechanism, we quantify the energy synchronization error among the oscillators, thereby revealing how energy synchronization evolves during the onset of EEs.

Experimental realization of all logic elements and memory latch in SC-CNN Chua's circuit

The Chua's circuit is examined using a State Controlled-Cellular Neural Network (SC-CNN) framework with two logical square wave input signals. We illustrate, in particular, that this nonlinear circuit can generate all the basic logic operations, including OR/NOR, AND/NAND, and XOR/XNOR gates, by making use of the hopping of attractors which this circuit produces in different phase space regimes. Further, it is shown that besides two-inputs, the circuit emulates multi-input logic elements. Moreover, all these logic elements are effectively functioning for a tolerable limit of noise intensity. These observations are experimentally realized. Thus our investigation sheds new light in the field of digital technology where the existing static logic gates may be replaced or complemented by this kind of dynamical nonlinear circuits.

Extreme Events in the Higgs Oscillator: A Dynamical Study and Forecasting Approach

Many dynamical systems exhibit unexpected large amplitude excursions in the chronological progression of a state variable. In the present work, we consider the dynamics associated with the one-dimensional Higgs oscillator which is realized through gnomic projection of a harmonic oscillator defined on a spherical space of constant curvature onto a Euclidean plane which is tangent to the spherical space. While studying the dynamics of such a Higgs oscillator subjected to damping and an external forcing, various bifurcation phenomena, such as symmetry breaking, period doubling, and intermittency crises are encountered. As the driven parameter increases, the route to chaos takes place via intermittency crisis and we also identify the occurrence of extreme events due to the interior crisis. The study of probability distribution also confirms the occurrence of extreme events. Finally, we train the Long Short-Term Memory neural network model with the time-series data to forecast the extreme events (EEs).

Symmetrical emergence of extreme events at multiple regions in a damped and driven velocity-dependent mechanical system

In this work, we report the emergence of extreme events in a damped and driven velocity-dependent mechanical system. We observe that the extreme events emerge at multiple points. We further notice that the extreme events occur symmetrically in both positive and negative values at all the points of emergence. We statistically confirm the emergence of extreme events by plotting the probability distribution function of peaks and interevent intervals. We also determine the mechanism behind the emergence of extreme events at all the points and classify these points into two categories depending on the region at which the extreme events emerge. Finally, we plot the two parameter diagram in order to have a complete overview of the system.
