Representation of the causal logic for the Dirac system and the electron

We construct a covariant representation of the causal logic for the Dirac system and the electron, based on the conserved Dirac probability current and a general current-to-localization procedure for achronal regions. A polynomial decay estimate, derived by a non-stationary phase argument, verifies the conditions required to define covariant achronal localization for the full Dirac system. Extending this localization to complete spacetime regions yields the corresponding causal-logic representation; restriction to the positive-energy invariant subspace gives the analogous construction for the electron. We establish several structural properties. On Euclidean space, Dirac localization agrees with canonical projection-valued localization, while its position operator differs from the Newton--Wigner operator by an explicitly determined bounded self-adjoint correction. Full Dirac achronal localization is projection valued and represents achronal separateness by orthogonality, thus satisfying microscopic causality. After compression to the electron subspace, it becomes positive-operator valued while preserving causality. We further extend known results from spatial to general achronal regions, prove separation and norm-one criteria, and analyze the high-boost limit, obtaining Lorentz contraction in a precise probabilistic sense. Finally, we discuss the electron--positron decomposition and the state transformation induced by position measurements, showing that measurement-induced positron production is universal and independent of the specific measuring device.

Spatial Localization of Relativistic Quantum Systems: The Commutativity Requirement and the Locality Principle. Part II: A Model from Local QFT

This paper is the second and final part of a two-part study. We construct positive-energy relativistic spatial localization observables in Minkowski spacetime within standard quantum field theory, using the stress--energy--momentum tensor smeared with suitable test functions. For each fixed timelike direction, the construction gives positive operator-valued measures (POVMs) on spacelike hypersurfaces, well defined on every $n$-particle sector and satisfying a relativistic causality condition excluding superluminal propagation of detection probabilities. The observables are built from local or quasi-local field-theoretic quantities, thus providing a rigorous version of earlier heuristic proposals. In the one-particle sector, the construction reduces to the observable previously introduced by the author, and its first moment gives the Newton--Wigner position operator under appropriate normalization and centering assumptions. Because the Reeh--Schlieder theorem prevents the normally ordered stress--energy--momentum tensor from being positive on the full Fock space, we use quantum energy inequalities to obtain lower bounds controlling deviations from positivity. This leads to regularized operator families, bounded from below, which approximate the localization effects. Finally, we define conditional localization observables for finite laboratories through modified local energy operators. By Haag duality, the corresponding conditional POVMs belong to local von Neumann algebras and commute for causally separated regions, in accordance with the Araki--Haag--Kastler framework. The results show how commutativity of localization observables is recovered for conditional measurements in finite spacetime regions.

Spatial Localization of Relativistic Quantum Systems: The Commutativity Requirement and the Locality Principle. Part I: A General Analysis

We investigate whether commutativity is necessary to represent relativistic locality for localization observables of relativistic quantum systems in Minkowski spacetime. A well known no-go theorem by Halvorson and Clifton shows that commutativity of localization effects for causally separated regions is incompatible with other seemingly natural assumptions about spatial localization. Since commutativity is taken to represent locality in the Araki-Haag-Kastler framework of QFT, this prompts the question whether it follows from more elementary locality principles of quantum theory. Using Busch's operational analysis in terms of no-signaling and relativistic consistency, we argue that for particle-like systems commutativity is not implied by these principles. Assuming a natural local detectability principle, elementary localization observables are not localized in arbitrarily small spacetime neighborhoods of the relevant spatial regions, but rather in regions containing the entire rest space (a Cauchy surface) on which the measurement is performed. This reflects the particle picture itself, where localization occurs at a unique place on a rest space filled with ideal detectors, and therefore does not directly conflict with the Araki-Haag-Kastler notion of locality. We also show that commutativity and localization can coexist for less idealized localization procedures. To this end, we introduce conditional localization POVMs associated with bounded spatial regions interpreted as laboratories. By the gentle measurement lemma, these observables describe conditional localization probabilities and can, in principle, satisfy commutativity for causally separated laboratories. They may therefore be represented by local observables in the Araki-Haag-Kastler sense. Explicit examples are presented in a second work within local QFT.

Achronal localization and representation of the causal logic from a conserved current, application to the massive scalar boson

Only recently the concept of achronal localization has been developed as the adequate frame for the description of the localizability of a relativistic quantum mechanical system. Here covariant achronal localizations are gained out of covariant conserved currents computing their flux passing through achronal surfaces. This general method is applied to the probability density currents with causal kernel regarding the massive scalar boson. As (covariant) achronal localizations correspond one-to-one to (covariant) representations of the causal logic, thus, apparently for the first time, a covariant representation of the causal logic for an elementary relativistic quantum mechanical system has been achieved. Similarly a covariant family of representations of the causal logic is derived from the stress-energy tensor of the massive scalar boson. The construction of an achronal localization from a conserved current relies on a version of the divergence theorem for open sets with almost Lipschitz boundary. This result is stated and proved in this work.

Quantum particle localization observables on Cauchy surfaces of Minkowski spacetime and their causal properties

We introduce and study a general notion of spatial localization on spacelike smooth Cauchy surfaces of quantum systems in Minkowski spacetime. The notion is constructed in terms of a coherent family of normalized POVMs, one for each said Cauchy surface. We prove that a family of POVMs of this type automatically satisfies a causality condition which generalizes Castrigiano's one and implies it when restricting to flat spacelike Cauchy surfaces. As a consequence no conflict with Hegerfeldt's theorem arises. We furthermore prove that such families of POVMs do exist for massive Klein-Gordon particles, since some of them are extensions of already known spatial localization observables. These are constructed out of positive definite kernels or are defined in terms of the stress-energy tensor operator. Some further features of these structures are investigated, in particular, the relation with the triple of Newton-Wigner selfadjoint operators and a modified form of Heisenberg inequality in the rest $3$-spaces of Minkowski reference frames

Feynman path integrals on compact Lie groups with bi-invariant Riemannian metrics

In this work we consider a suitable generalization of the Feynman path integral on a specific class of Riemannian manifolds consisting of compact Lie groups with bi-invariant Riemannian metrics. The main tools we use are the Cartan development map, the notion of oscillatory integral, and the Chernoff approximation theorem. We prove that, for a class of functions of a dense subspace of the relevant Hilbert space, the Feynman map produces the solution of the Schr\"odinger equation, where the Laplace-Beltrami operator coincides with the second order Casimir operator of the group.

On the Relativistic Spatial Localization for massive real scalar Klein-Gordon quantum particles

I rigorously analyze a proposal, introduced by D.R.Terno, about a spatial localization observable for a Klein-Gordon massive real particle in terms of a Poincar\'e-covariant family of POVMs. I prove that these POVMs are actually a kinematic deformation of the Newton-Wigner PVMs. The first moment of one of these POVMs however exactly coincides with a restriction (on a core) of the Newton-Wigner selfadjoint position operator, though the second moment does not. This fact permits to preserve all nice properties of the Newton-Wigner position observable, dropping the unphysical features arising from the Hegerfeldt theorem. The considered POVM does not permit spatially sharply localized states, but it admits families of almost localized states with arbitrary precision. Next, I establish that the Terno localization observable satisfies part of a requirement introduced by D.P.L.Castrigiano about causal temporal evolution concerning the Lebesgue measurable spatial regions of any Minkowskian reference frame. The validity of the complete Castrigiano's causality requirement is also proved for a notion of spatial localization which generalizes Terno's one in a natural way.

Generation of quantum-certified random numbers using on-chip path-entangled single photons from an LED

Single-photon entanglement is a peculiar type of entanglement in which two or more degrees of freedom of a single photon are correlated quantum-mechanically. Here, we demonstrate a photonic integrated chip (PIC) able to generate and manipulate single-photon path-entangled states, using a commercial red LED as light source. A Bell test, in the Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt (CHSH) form, is performed to confirm the presence of entanglement, resulting in a maximum value of the CHSH correlation parameter equal to $2.605 \pm 0.004$. This allows us to use it as an integrated semi-device independent quantum random number generator able to produce certified random numbers. The certification scheme is based on a Bell's inequality violation and on a partial characterization of the experimental setup, without the need of introducing any further assumptions either on the input state or on the particular form of the measurement observables. In the end a min-entropy of $33\%$ is demonstrated.

The quantization of Proca fields on globally hyperbolic spacetimes: Hadamard states and M{\o}ller operators

This paper deals with several issues concerning the algebraic quantization of the real Proca field in a globally hyperbolic spacetime and the definition and existence of Hadamard states for that field. In particular, extending previous work, we construct the so-called M\o ller $*$-isomorphism between the algebras of Proca observables on paracausally related spacetimes, proving that the pullback of these isomorphisms preserves the Hadamard property of corresponding quasifree states defined on the two spacetimes. Then, we pull-back a natural Hadamard state constructed on ultrastatic spacetimes of bounded geometry, along this $*$-isomorphism, to obtain a Hadamard state on a general globally hyperbolic spacetime. We conclude the paper, by comparing the definition of a Hadamard state, here given in terms of wavefront set, with the one proposed by Fewster and Pfenning, which makes use of a supplementary Klein-Gordon Hadamard form. We establish an (almost) complete equivalence of the two definitions.

Paracausal deformations of Lorentzian metrics and M{\o}ller isomorphisms in algebraic quantum field theory

Given a pair of normally hyperbolic operators over (possibily different) globally hyperbolic spacetimes on a given smooth manifold, the existence of a geometric isomorphism, called {\em M{\o}ller operator}, between the space of solutions is studied. This is achieved by exploiting a new equivalence relation in the space of globally hyperbolic metrics, called {\em paracausal relation}. In particular, it is shown that the M{\o}ller operator associated to a pair of paracausally related metrics and normally hyperbolic operators also intertwines the respective causal propagators of the normally hyperbolic operators and it preserves the natural symplectic forms on the space of (smooth) initial data. Finally, the M{\o}ller map is lifted to a $*$-isomorphism between (generally off-shell) $CCR$-algebras. It is shown that the Wave Front set of a Hadamard bidistribution (and of a Hadamard state in particular) is preserved by the pull-back action of this $*$-isomorphism.

On the global Hadamard parametrix in QFT and the signed squared geodesic distance defined in domains larger than convex normal neighbourhoods

We consider the global Hadamard condition and the notion of Hadamard parametrix whose use is pervasive in algebraic QFT in curved spacetime (see refences in the main text). We point out the existence of a technical problem in the literature concerning well-definedness of the global Hadamard parametrix in normal neighbourhoods of Cauchy surfaces. We discuss in particular the definition of the (signed) geodesic distance $\sigma$ and related structures in an open neighbourhood of the diagonal of $M\times M$ larger than $U\times U$, for a normal convex neighborhood $U$, where $(M,g)$ is a Riemannian or Lorentzian (smooth Hausdorff paracompact) manifold. We eventually propose a quite natural solution which slightly changes the original definition by B.S. Kay and R.M. Wald and relies upon some non-trivial consequences of the paracompactness property. The proposed re-formulation is in agreement with M.J. Radzikowski's microlocal version of the Hadamard condition.

Entropy certification of a realistic QRNG based on single-particle entanglement

In single-particle entanglement (SPE) two degrees of freedom of a single particle are entangled. SPE is a resource that can be exploited both in quantum communication protocols and in experimental tests of noncontextuality based on the Kochen-Specker theorem. SPE can be certified via a test of quantum contextuality based on Bell inequalities. Experiments of Bell-like inequality violation by single particle entangled systems may be affected by an analogue of the locality loophole in this context, due to the presence of unavoidable non-idealities in the experimental devices which actually produce unwanted correlations between the two observables that are simultaneously measured. This issue is tackled here by quantitatively analyzing the behaviour of realistic devices in SPE experiments with photons. In particular, we show how it is possible to provide a semi-device independent randomness certification of realistic quantum random number generators based on Bell inequality violation by SPE states of photons. The analysis is further enlarged to encompass, with a Markovian model, memory effects due to dead time, dark counts and afterpulsing affecting single photon detectors, in particular when not dealing with coincidence measurements. An unbiased estimator is also proposed for quantum transition probabilities out of the collection of experimental data.

Certified quantum random number generator based on single-photon entanglement

Quantum entanglement represents an ideal resource to guarantee the security of random numbers employed in many scientific and cryptographic applications. However, entanglement-based certified random number generators are particularly challenging to implement. Here, we demonstrate a new certified quantum random number generator based on momentum-polarization entangled single photon states. The use of single photon entanglement allows employing an attenuated laser source and a simple setup where only linear optical components are utilized. For the latter, a semi-device-independent modeling of the photonic quantum random number generator is developed, which certifies a minimum entropy of $(2.5\pm 0.5)\%$, corresponding to a generation rate of 4.4 kHz. At the expenses of a higher level of trust in the system, the certified minimum entropy can be increased to $(30.1 \pm0.5 )\%$, implying a generation rate of 52.7 kHz. Our results show that a simple optical implementation combined with an accurate modeling provide an entanglement-based high-security quantum random number generator using imperfect devices.

The classical limit of Schr\"{o}dinger operators in the framework of Berezin quantization and spontaneous symmetry breaking as emergent phenomenon

The algebraic properties of a strict deformation quantization are analysed on the classical phase space $\bR^{2n}$. The corresponding quantization maps enable us to take the limit for $\hbar \to 0$ of a suitable sequence of algebraic vector states induced by $\hbar$-dependent eigenvectors of several quantum models, in which the sequence converges to a probability measure on $\bR^{2n}$, defining a classical algebraic state. The observables are here represented in terms of a Berezin quantization map which associates classical observables (functions on the phase space) to quantum observables (elements of $C^*$ algebras) parametrized by $\hbar$. The existence of this classical limit is in particular proved for ground states of a wide class of Schr\"{o}dinger operators, where the classical limiting state is obtained in terms of a Haar integral. The support of the classical state (a probability measure on the phase space) is included in certain orbits in $\bR^{2n}$ depending on the symmetry of the potential. In addition, since this $C^*$-algebraic approach allows for both quantum and classical theories, it is highly suitable to study the theoretical concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) as an emergent phenomenon when passing from the quantum realm to the classical world by switching off $\hbar$. To this end, a detailed mathematical description is outlined and it is shown how this algebraic approach sheds new light on spontaneous symmetry breaking in several physical models.

Bulk-boundary asymptotic equivalence of two strict deformation quantizations

The existence of a strict deformation quantization of $X_k=S(M_k({\mathbb{C}}))$, the state space of the $k\times k$ matrices $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$ which is canonically a compact Poisson manifold (with stratified boundary) has recently been proven by both authors and K. Landsman \cite{LMV}. In fact, since increasing tensor powers of the $k\times k$ matrices $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$ are known to give rise to a continuous bundle of $C^*$-algebras over $I=\{0\}\cup 1/\mathbb{N}\subset[0,1]$ with fibers $A_{1/N}=M_k({\mathbb{C}})^{\otimes N}$ and $A_0=C(X_k)$, we were able to define a strict deformation quantization of $X_k$ \`{a} la Rieffel, specified by quantization maps $Q_{1/N}: \tilde{A}_0\rightarrow A_{1/N}$, with $\tilde{A}_0$ a dense Poisson subalgebra of $A_0$. A similar result is known for the symplectic manifold $S^2\subset\mathbb{R}^3$, for which in this case the fibers $A'_{1/N}=M_{N+1}(\mathbb{C})\cong B(\text{Sym}^N(\mathbb{C}^2))$ and $A_0'=C(S^2)$ form a continuous bundle of $C^*$-algebras over the same base space $I$, and where quantization is specified by (a priori different) quantization maps $Q_{1/N}': \tilde{A}_0' \rightarrow A_{1/N}'$. In this paper we focus on the particular case $X_2\cong B^3$ (i.e the unit three-ball in $\mathbb{R}^3$) and show that for any function $f\in \tilde{A}_0$ one has $\lim_{N\to\infty}||(Q_{1/N}(f))|_{\text{Sym}^N(\mathbb{C}^2)}-Q_{1/N}'(f|_{_{S^2}})||_N=0$, were $\text{Sym}^N(\mathbb{C}^2)$ denotes the symmetric subspace of $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{N \otimes}$. Finally, we give an application regarding the (quantum) Curie-Weiss model.

Chernoff approximations of Feller semigroups in Riemannian manifolds

Chernoff approximations of Feller semigroups and the associated diffusion processes in Riemannian manifolds are studied. The manifolds are assumed to be of bounded geometry, thus including all compact manifolds and also a wide range of non-compact manifolds. Sufficient conditions are established for a class of second order elliptic operators to generate a Feller semigroup on a (generally non-compact) manifold of bounded geometry. A construction of Chernoff approximations is presented for these Feller semigroups in terms of shift operators. This provides approximations of solutions to initial value problems for parabolic equations with variable coefficients on the manifold. It also yields weak convergence of a sequence of random walks on the manifolds to the diffusion processes associated with the elliptic generator. For parallelizable manifolds this result is applied in particular to the representation of Brownian motion on the manifolds as limits of the corresponding random walks.

An operational construction of the sum of two non-commuting observables in quantum theory and related constructions

The existence of a real linear-space structure on the set of observables of a quantum system -- i.e., the requirement that the linear combination of two generally non-commuting observables $A,B$ is an observable as well -- is a fundamental postulate of the quantum theory yet before introducing any structure of algebra. However, it is by no means clear how to choose the measuring instrument of the composed observable $aA+bB$ ($a,b\in \mathbb{R}$) if such measuring instruments are given for the addends observables $A$ and $B$ when they are incompatible observables. A mathematical version of this dilemma is how to construct the spectral measure of $f(aA+bB)$ out of the spectral measures of $A$ and $B$. We present such a construction with a formula which is valid for generally unbounded selfadjoint operators $A$ and $B$, whose spectral measures may not commute, and a wide class of functions $f: \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$. We prove that, in the bounded case the Jordan product of $A$ and $B$ can be constructed with the same procedure out of the spectral measures of $A$ and $B$. The formula turns out to have an interesting operational interpretation and, in particular cases, a nice interplay with the theory of Feynman path integration and the Feynman-Kac formula.

Strict deformation quantization of the state space of $M_k(\mathbb{C})$ with applications to the Curie-Weiss model

Increasing tensor powers of the $k\times k$ matrices $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$ are known to give rise to a continuous bundle of $C^*$-algebras over $I=\{0\}\cup 1/\mathbb{N}\subset[0,1]$ with fibers $A_{1/N}=M_k({\mathbb{C}})^{\otimes N}$ and $A_0=C(X_k)$, where $X_k=S(M_k({\mathbb{C}}))$, the state space of $M_k({\mathbb{C}})$, which is canonically a compact Poisson manifold (with stratified boundary). Our first result is the existence of a strict deformation quantization of $X_k$ \`{a} la Rieffel, defined by perfectly natural quantization maps $Q_{1/N}: \tilde{A}_0\rightarrow A_{1/N}$ (where $\tilde{A}_0$ is an equally natural dense Poisson subalgebra of $A_0$). We apply this quantization formalism to the Curie--Weiss model (an exemplary quantum spin with long-range forces) in the parameter domain where its $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is spontaneously broken in the thermodynamic limit $N\raw\infty$. If this limit is taken with respect to the macroscopic observables of the model (as opposed to the quasi-local observables), it yields a classical theory with phase space $X_2\cong B^3$ (i.e\ the unit three-ball in $\R^3$). Our quantization map then enables us to take the classical limit of the sequence of (unique) algebraic vector states induced by the ground state eigenvectors $\Psi_N^{(0)}$ of this model as $N\raw\infty$, in which the sequence converges to a probability measure $\mu$ on the associated classical phase space $X_2$. This measure is a symmetric convex sum of two Dirac measures related by the underlying $\Z_2$-symmetry of the model, and as such the classical limit exhibits spontaneous symmetry breaking, too. Our proof of convergence is heavily based on Perelomov-style coherent spin states and at some stage it relies on (quite strong) numerical evidence. Hence the proof is not completely analytic, but somewhat hybrid.
