Disentangling $V_{ud}$ from New Physics in Beta Decays with the FCC-ee

Superallowed nuclear $β$-decays enable the most precise determination of the CKM element $V_{ud}$, but they are only sensitive to an effective combination of $V_{ud}$ and New Physics contributions to left-handed charged currents, which low-energy data alone cannot disentangle. Here we determine $V_{ud}$ simultaneously with the relevant Wilson coefficients of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) by combining, within the SMEFiT framework, a dedicated likelihood for superallowed transitions, including radiative and nuclear-structure uncertainties, with LEP and LHC world data and HL-LHC and FCC-ee projections. Current collider data and HL-LHC projections only partially lift the degeneracy between $V_{ud}$ and possible New Physics effects. Instead, the FCC-ee fully decouples $V_{ud}$ from New Physics, recovering SM-level precision while significantly tightening the constraints on the SMEFT Wilson coefficients. This conclusion is robust against variations in flavour assumptions and theory uncertainties. Our results highlight the complementarity between future colliders and low-energy experiments, and pave the way towards a SMEFT-consistent interpretation of first-row CKM unitarity tests and the Cabibbo angle anomaly.

Scalarful double beta decay

We revisit scalar emissions in double beta decays of nuclei, often discussed in the context of Majoron models, in light of the latest developments on the study of neutrinoless double beta decay amplitudes from an effective field theory approach. The sensitivity of double beta decay experiments to this process is assessed through an analysis of spectral shapes, and the study is extended to massive scalars, scalars coupling to sterile neutrinos, and exotic right-handed effective couplings.

Neutrinoless double beta decay rates and the $3 + 2$ scenario

The possible Majorana nature of neutrinos leads to lepton-number-violating effects such as neutrinoless double beta decay. The standard study of this process involves mass-dependent matrix elements which, although easy to use, might be missing important effects, especially in the light neutrino regime where the ultrasoft contributions become important. A fresh look at the different momentum regions leads us to an effective practical parametrisation for the decay amplitude that can show significant differences in the light-to-medium mass range of neutrinos compared to the standard parametrisation. As a concrete realisation of a UV model leading to Majorana neutrinos, the testability of a $3 + 2$ model with two sterile neutrinos is discussed.

Catalogues of Cosmologically Self-Consistent Hadronic QCD Axion Models

We extend the catalogue of "phenomenologically preferred" hadronic axion models to include heavy fermion representations associated with higher-dimensional decay operators. The latter have recently been shown to self-consistently trigger a period of early matter domination, making the underlying axion models cosmologically viable. After identifying all possible representations up to decay operator dimension $d \leq 9$, we update the hadronic axion band for the axion-photon coupling. The central regions of the axion band are similar to those found previously and approximately independent of the axion decay constant $f_a$, suggesting that they are robust predictions and targets for future axion searches. Moreover, we find that $d = 6$ and $d = 7$ operators can lead to two new viable "model islands" around $f_a \sim 10^{12}$ GeV and $f_a \sim 10^{14}$ GeV, i.e., beyond the standard post-inflationary mass region.

CP-violating axion interactions II: axions as Dark Matter

Axions provide a solution to the strong CP problem and are excellent dark matter candidates. The presence of additional sources of CP violation, for example to account for the matter/antimatter asymmetry of the universe, can lead to CP-violating interactions between axions and Standard Model fields. In case axions form a coherent dark matter background, this leads to time-oscillating fundamental constants such as the fine-structure constant and particle masses. In this work we compare the sensitivity of various searches for CP-odd axion interactions. These include fifth-force experiments, searches for time-oscillating constants induced by axion dark matter, and direct limits from electric dipole moment experiments. We show that searches for oscillating constants can outperform fifth-force experiments in the regime of small axion masses, but, in general, do not reach the sensitivity of electric dipole moment experiments.

Anomaly Ratio Distributions of Hadronic Axion Models with Multiple Heavy Quarks

We consider hadronic axion models that extend the Standard Model by one complex scalar field and one or more new heavy quarks, i.e. $N_\mathcal{Q} \geq 1$. We review previously suggested selection criteria as well as categorize and catalog all possible models for $N_\mathcal{Q} \leq 9$. In particular, allowing for $N_\mathcal{Q} > 1$ can introduce models that spoil the axion solution of the strong CP problem. Demanding that Landau poles do not appear below some energy scale limits the number of preferred models to a finite number. For our choice of criteria, we find that $N_\mathcal{Q} \leq 28$ and only 820 different anomaly ratios $E/N$ exist (443 when considering additive representations, 12 when all new quarks transform under the same representation). We analyze the ensuing $E/N$ distributions, which can be used to construct informative priors on the axion-photon coupling. The hadronic axion model band may be defined as the central region of one of these distributions, and we show how the band for equally probable, preferred models compares to present and future experimental constraints.
