The group of automorphisms of the algebra of one-sided inverses of a polynomial algebra

The algebra $\mS_n$ in the title is obtained from a polynomial algebra $P_n$ in $n$ variables by adding commuting, {\em left} (but not two-sided) inverses of the canonical generators of $P_n$. Ignoring non-Noetherian property, the algebra $\mS_n$ belongs to a family of algebras like the Weyl algebra $A_n$ and the polynomial algebra $P_{2n}$. The group of automorphisms $G_n$ of the algebra $\mS_n$ is found: $$ G_n=S_n\ltimes \mT^n\ltimes \Inn (\mS_n) \supseteq S_n\ltimes \mT^n\ltimes \underbrace{\GL_\infty (K)\ltimes... \ltimes \GL_\infty (K)}_{2^n-1 {\rm times}}=:G_n' $$ where $S_n$ is the symmetric group, $\mT^n$ is the $n$-dimensional torus, $\Inn (\mS_n)$ is the group of inner automorphisms of $\mS_n$ (which is huge), and $\GL_\infty (K)$ is the group of invertible infinite dimensional matrices. This result may help in understanding of the structure of the groups of automorphisms of the Weyl algebra $A_n$ and the polynomial algebra $P_{2n}$. An analog of the {\em Jacobian homomorphism}: $\Aut_{K-{\rm alg}}(P_{2n})\ra K^*$, so-called, the {\em global determinant} is introduced for the group $G_n'$ (notice that the algebra $\mS_n$ is {\em noncommutative} and neither left nor right Noetherian).

The group of order preserving automorphisms of the ring of differential operators on Laurent polynomial algebra in prime characteristic

Let $K$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$. It is proved that the group $\Aut_{ord}(\CD (L_n))$ of order preserving automorphisms of the ring $\CD (L_n)$ of differential operators on a Laurent polynomial algebra $L_n:= K[x_1^{\pm 1}, ..., x_n^{\pm 1}]$ is isomorphic to a skew direct product of groups $\Zp^n \rtimes \Aut_K(L_n)$ where $\Zp$ is the ring of $p$-adic integers. Moreover, the group $\Aut_{ord}(\CD (L_n))$ is found explicitly. Similarly, $\Aut_{ord}(\CDPn)\simeq \Aut_K(P_n)$ where $P_n: =K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ is a polynomial algebra.

Simple derivations of differentiably simple Noetherian commutative rings in prime characteristic

Let $R$ be a {\em differentiably simple Noetherian commutative} ring of characteristic $p>0$ (then $(R, \gm)$ is local with $n:= {\rm emdim} (R)<\infty$). A short proof is given of the Theorem of Harper \cite{Harper61} on classification of differentiably simple Noetherian commutative rings in prime characteristic. The main result of the paper is that there {\em exists} a {\em nilpotent simple} derivation of the ring $R$ such that if $\d^{p^i}\neq 0$ then $\d^{p^i}(x_i)=1$ for some $x_i\in \gm$. The derivation $\d $ is given {\em explicitly}, it is {\em unique} up to the action of the group ${\rm Aut}(R)$ of {\em ring} automorphisms of $R$. Let $\nsder (R)$ be the set of all such derivations. Then $\nsder (R)\simeq {\rm Aut}(R)/{\rm Aut}(R/\gm)$. The proof is based on {\em existence} and {\em uniqueness} of an {\em iterative} $\d$-{\em descent} (for each $\d \in \nsder (R)$), i.e. a sequence $\{y^{[i]}, 0\leq i<p^n\}$ in $R$ such that $y^{[0]}:=1$, $\d(y^{[i]})=y^{[i-1]}$ and $y^{[i]}y^{[j]}={i+j\choose i}y^{[i+j]}$ for all $0\leq i,j<p^n$. For each $\d\in \nsder (R)$, $\Der_{k'}(R)=\oplus_{i=0}^{n-1}R\d^{p^i}$ and $k':= \ker (\d)\simeq R/ \gm$.

Generalizations of two theorems of Ritt on decompositions of polynomial maps

Two theorems of J. F. Ritt on decompositions of polynomials maps are generalized to a more general situation: for, so-called, reduction monoids ($(K[x], \circ)$ and $(K[x^2]x, \circ)$ are examples of reduction monoids). In particular, analogues of the two theorems of J. F. Ritt hold for the monoid $(K[x^2]x, \circ)$ of odd polynomials. It is shown that, in general, the two theorems of J. F. Ritt fail for the cusp $(K+K[x]x^2, \circ)$ but their analogues are still true for decompositions of maximal length of regular elements of the cusp.

The group of automorphisms of the first Weyl algebra in prime characteristic and the restriction map

Let $K$ be a {\em perfect} field of characteristic $p>0$, $A_1:=K< x, \der | \der x- x\der =1>$ be the first Weyl algebra and $Z:=K[X:=x^p, Y:=\der^p]$ be its centre. It is proved that $(i)$ the restriction map $\res :\Aut_K(A_1)\ra \Aut_K(Z), \s \mapsto \s|_Z$, is a monomorphism with $\im (\res) = \G :=\{τ\in \Aut_K(Z) | \CJ (τ) =1\}$ where $\CJ (τ) $ is the Jacobian of $τ$ (note that $\Aut_K(Z)=K^*\ltimes \G$ and if $K$ is {\em not} perfect then $\im (\res) \neq \G$); $(ii)$ the bijection $\res : \Aut_K(A_1) \ra \G$ is a monomorphism of infinite dimensional algebraic groups which is {\em not} an isomorphism (even if $K$ is algebraically closed); $(iii)$ an explicit formula for $\res^{-1}$ is found via differential operators $\CD (Z)$ on $Z$ and negative powers of the Fronenius map $F$. Proofs are based on the following (non-obvious) equality proved in the paper: $$ (\frac{d}{dx}+f)^p= (\frac{d}{dx})^p+\frac{d^{p-1}f}{dx^{p-1}}+f^p, f\in K[x].$$

Derivations and skew derivations of the Grassmann algebras

Surprisingly, skew derivations rather than ordinary derivations are more basic (important) object in study of the Grassmann algebras. Let $Ł_n = K\lfloor x_1, ..., x_n\rfloor$ be the Grassmann algebra over a commutative ring $K$ with ${1/2}\in K$, and $\d$ be a skew $K$-derivation of $Ł_n$. It is proved that $\d$ is a unique sum $\d = \d^{ev} +\d^{od}$ of an even and odd skew derivation. Explicit formulae are given for $\d^{ev}$ and $\d^{od}$ via the elements $\d (x_1), ..., \d (x_n)$. It is proved that the set of all even skew derivations of $Ł_n$ coincides with the set of all the inner skew derivations. Similar results are proved for derivations of $Ł_n$. In particular, $\Der_K(Ł_n)$ is a faithful but not simple $\Aut_K(Ł_n)$-module (where $K$ is reduced and $n\geq 2$). All differential and skew differential ideals of $Ł_n$ are found. It is proved that the set of generic normal elements of $Ł_n$ that are not units forms a single $\Aut_K(Ł_n)$-orbit (namely, $\Aut_K(Ł_n)x_1$) if $n$ is even and two orbits (namely, $\Aut_K(Ł_n)x_1$ and $\Aut_K(Ł_n)(x_1+x_2... x_n)$) if $n$ is odd.

The Jacobian map, the Jacobian group and the group of automorphisms of the Grassmann algebra

There are nontrivial dualities and parallels between polynomial algebras and the Grassmann algebras. This paper is an attempt to look at the Grassmann algebras at the angle of the Jacobian conjecture for polynomial algebras (which is the question/conjecture about the $ $ {\em Jacobian set} -- the set of all algebra endomorphisms of a polynomial algebra with the Jacobian 1 -- the Jacobian conjecture claims that the Jacobian set is a {\em group}). In this paper, we study in detail the Jacobian set for the Grassmann algebra which turns out to be a {\em group} -- the {\em Jacobian group} $Σ$ -- a sophisticated (and large) part of the group of automorphisms of the Grassmann algebra $Ł_n$. It is proved that the Jacobian group $Σ$ is a rational unipotent algebraic group. A (minimal) set of generators for the algebraic group $Σ$, its dimension and coordinates are found explicitly. In particular, for $n\geq 4$, \dim (§) = (n-1)2^{n-1} -n^2+2 if $n$ is even, (n-1)2^{n-1} -n^2+1 if $n$ is odd. The same is done for the Jacobian ascents - some natural algebraic overgroups of $Σ$. It is proved that the Jacobian map $\s \mapsto \det (\frac{\der \s (x_i)}{\der x_j})$ is surjective for odd $n$, and is {\em not} for even $n$ though, in this case, the image of the Jacobian map is an algebraic subvariety of codimension 1 given by a single equation.

Primary Decompositions for Left Noetherian Rings

Two constructions are given that describe respectively all shortest primary decompositions and all shortest uniform decompositions for left Noetherian rings. They show that these decompositions are, in general, highly non-unique.

Factorization of monomorphisms of a polynomial algebra in one variable

Let $K[x]$ be a polynomial algebra in a variable $x$ over a commutative $\Q$-algebra $K$, and $\G'$ be the monoid of $K$-algebra monomorphisms of $K[x]$ of the type $\s : x\mapsto x+ł_2x^2+... +ł_nx^n$, $ł_i\in K$, $ł_n$ is a unit of $K$. It is proved that for each $\s \in \G'$ there are only finitely many distinct decompositions $\s = \s_1... \s_s$ in $\G'$. Moreover, each such a decomposition is uniquely determined by the degrees of components: if $\s = \s_1... \s_s= τ_1... τ_s$ then $\s_1=τ_1, >..., \s_s=τ_s$ iff $°(\s_1)=°(τ_1), ..., °(\s_s)=°(τ_s)$. Explicit formulae are given for the components $\s_i$ via the coefficients $ł_j$ and the degrees $°(\s_k)$ (as an application of the inversion formula for polynomial automorphisms in {\em several} variables from \cite{Bav-inform}). In general, for a polynomial there are no formulae (in radicals) for its divisors (elementary Galois theory). Surprisingly, one can write such formulae where instead of the product of polynomials one considers their composition (as polynomial functions).

Morita invariance of the filter dimension and of the inequality of Bernstein

It is proved that the filter dimenion is Morita invariant. A direct consequence of this fact is the Morita invariance of the inequality of Bernstein: if an algebra $A$ is Morita equivalent to the ring $\CD (X)$ of differential operators on a smooth irreducible affine algebraic variety $X$ of dimension $n\geq 1$ over a field of characteristic zero then the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension $ \GK (M)\geq n = \frac{\GK (A)}{2}$ for all nonzero finitely generated $A$-modules $M$. In fact, a more strong result is proved, namely, a Morita invariance of the holonomic number for finitely generated algebra. As a direct consequence of this fact an affirmative answer is given to the question/conjecture posed by Ken Brown several years ago of whether an analogue of the inequality of Bernstein holds for the (simple) rational Cherednik algebras $H_c$ for integral $c$: $\GK (M)\geq n =\frac{\GK (H_c)}{2}$ for all nonzero finitely generated $H_c$-modules $M$.

Dimension, multiplicity, holonomic modules, and an analogue of the inequality of Bernstein for rings of differential operators in prime characteristic

Let $K$ be an {\em arbitrary} field of characteristic $p>0$ and $\CD (P_n)$ be the ring of differential operators on a polynomial algebra $P_n$ in $n$ variables. A long anticipated {\em analogue of the inequality of Bernstein} is proved for the ring $\CD (P_n)$. On the way, analogues of the concepts of (Gelfand-Kirillov) {\em dimension, multiplicity, holonomic modules} are found in prime characteristic (giving answers to old questions of finding such analogs).An analogue of the {\em Quillen's Lemma} is proved for simple {\em finitely presented} $\CD (P_n)$-modules. In contrast to the characteristic zero case where the Geland-Kirillov dimension of a nonzero finitely generated $\CD (P_n)$-module $M$ can be {\em any natural} number from the interval $[n,2n]$, in the prime characteristic, the (new) dimension $\Dim (M)$ can be \underline{\em any real} number from the interval $[n,2n]$.

The inversion formulae for automorphisms of polynomial algebras and differential operators in prime characteristic

Let $K$ be an {\em arbitrary} field of characteristic $p>0$, let $A$ be one of the following algebras: $P_n:= K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ is a polynomial algebra, $\CD (P_n)$ is the ring of differential operators on $P_n$, $\CD (P_n)\t P_m$, the $n$'th {\em Weyl} algebra $A_n$, the $n$'th {\em Weyl} algebra $A_n\t P_m$ with polynomial coefficients $P_m$, the power series algebra $K[[x_1, ..., x_n]]$, $T_{k_1, ..., k_n}$ is the subalgebra of $\CD (P_n)$ generated by $P_n$ and the higher derivations $\der_i^{[j]}$, $0\leq j <p^{k_i}$, $i=1, ..., n$ (where $k_1, ..., k_n\in \mathbb{N}$), $T_{k_1, ..., k_n}\t P_m$, an {\em arbitrary central simple} (countably generated) algebra over an {\em arbitrary} field. {\em The inversion formula} for automorphisms of the algebra $A$ is found {\em explicitly}.

Generators and defining relations for ring of invariants of commuting locally nilpotent derivations or automorphisms

Let $A$ be an algebra over a field $K$ of characteristic zero, let $\d_1, >..., \d_s\in \Der_K(A)$ be {\em commuting locally nilpotent} $K$-derivations such that $\d_i(x_j)=\d_{ij}$, the Kronecker delta, for some elements $x_1,..., x_s\in A$. A set of algebra generators for the algebra $A^\d:= \cap_{i=1}^s\ker (\d_i)$ is found {\em explicitly} and a set of {\em defining relations} for the algebra $A^\d$ is described. Similarly, given a set $\s_1, ..., \s_s\in \Aut_K(A)$ of {\em commuting} $K$-automorphisms of the algebra $A$ such that the maps $\s_i-{\rm id_A}$ are {\em locally nilpotent} and $\s_i (x_j)=x_j+\d_{ij}$, for some elements $x_1,..., x_s\in A$. A set of algebra generators for the algebra $A^\s:=\{a\in A | \s_1(a)=... =\s_s(a)=a\}$ is found {\em explicitly} and a set of defining relations for the algebra $A^\s$ is described. In general, even for a {\em finitely generated noncommutative} algebra $A$ the algebras of invariants $A^\d $ and $A^\s $ are {\em not} finitely generated, {\em not} (left or right) Noetherian and {\em does not} satisfy finitely many defining relations (see examples). Though, for a {\em finitely generated commutative} algebra $A$ {\em always} the {\em opposite} is true. The derivations (or automorphisms) just described appear often in may different situations after (possibly) a localization of the algebra $A$.

Using the author's inversion formula for automorphisms of the Weyl algebras with polynomial coefficients and the bound on its degree a slightly shorter (algebraic) proof is given of the result of A. Belov-Kanel and M. Kontsevich that the Jacobian Conjecture implies the Dixmier Proplem. No originality is claimed.

The inversion formula for automorphisms of the Weyl algebras and polynomial algebras

The inversion formula is given for automorphisms of the Weyl algebras with polynomial coefficients over a field of characteristic zero. The theorem of Gabber on the degree of polynomial automorphism is extended. It is proved that any automorphism of the Weyl algebra with polynomial coefficients is determined by its left (right) faces (extending the result of J. H. McKay and S. S.-S. Wang for polynomial automorphisms).

The Carlitz Algebras

The Carlitz $\mathbb{F}_q$-algebra $C=C_ν$, $ν\in \mathbb{N}$, is generated by an algebraically closed field $\CK $ (which contains a non-discrete locally compact field of positive characteristic $p>0$, i.e. $K\simeq \mathbb{F}_q[[ x,x^{-1}]]$, $q=p^ν$), by the (power of the) {\em Frobenius} map $X=X_ν:f\mapsto f^q$, and by the {\em Carlitz derivative} $Y=Y_ν$. It is proved that the Krull and global dimensions of $C$ are 2, a classification of simple $C$-modules and ideals are given, there are only {\em countably many} ideals, they commute $(IJ=JI)$, and each ideal is a unique product of maximal ones. It is a remarkable fact that any simple $C$-module is a sum of eigenspaces of the element $YX$ (the set of eigenvalues for $YX$ is given explicitly for each simple $C$-module). This fact is crucial in finding the group $\Aut_{\Fq}(C)$ of $\Fq$-algebra automorphisms of $C$ and in proving that two distinct Carlitz rings are not isomorphic $(C_ν\not\simeq C_μ$ if $ν\neq μ$). The centre of $C$ is found explicitly, it is a UFD that contains {\em countably many} elements.
