Epsilon'/epsilon from Lattice QCD

Lattice calculations of matrix elements relevant for kaon decays, and in particular for epsilon'/epsilon, are reviewed. The role of the strange quark mass is also discussed. A comparison with other non-perturbative approaches used to compute kaon decay amplitudes is made.

Combined analysis of the unitarity triangle and CP violation in the Standard Model

We perform a combined analysis of the unitarity triangle and of the CP violating parameter epsilon'/epsilon using the most recent determination of the relevant experimental data and, whenever possible, hadronic matrix elements from lattice QCD. We discuss the role of the main non-perturbative parameters and make a comparison with other recent analyses. We use lattice results for the matrix element of Q_8 obtained without reference to the strange quark mass. Since a reliable lattice determination of the matrix element of Q_6 is still missing, the theoretical predictions for epsilon'/epsilon suffer from large uncertainties. By evaluating this matrix element with the vacuum-saturation approximation, we typically find as central value epsilon'/epsilon = (4 - 7) x 10^(-4). We conclude that the experimental data suggest large deviation of the value of the matrix element of Q_6 from the vacuum-saturation approximation, possibly due to penguin contractions.

Quark Masses and Renormalization Constants from Quark Propagator and 3-point Functions

We have computed the light and strange quark masses and the renormalization constants of the quark bilinear operators, by studying the large-p^2 behaviour of the lattice quark propagator and 3-point functions. The calculation is non-perturbatively improved, at O(a), in the chiral limit. The method used to compute the quark masses has never been applied so far, and it does not require an explicit determination of the quark mass renormalization constant.

Non-perturbatively Improved Heavy-Light Mesons: Masses and Decay Constants

We present a study of the heavy-light spectrum and of the D- and B-meson decay constants. The results wer e obtained in the quenched approximation, by using the non-perturbatively improved Clover lattice action at beta=6.2, with a sample of 100 configurations, on a 24^3 x 64 lattice. After a careful analysis of th e systematic errors present in the extraction of the physical results, by assuming quite conservative discretization errors, we find f_Ds=231 +/- 12^{+6}_{-1} MeV, f_D = 211 +/- 14^{+0}_{-12} MeV, f_Ds/f_D=1.10(2), f_Bs = 204 +/- 16^{+28}_{-0} MeV, f_B = 179 +/- 18^{+26}_{-9} MeV, f_Bs/f_B=1.14(3)^{+0}_{-1}. Our results, which have smaller discretization errors than many previous estimates at fixed value of the lattice spacing $a$, support a large value of f_B in the quenched approximation.

Light hadron spectroscopy on the lattice with the non-perturbatively improved Wilson action

We present results for the light meson masses and decay constants as obtained from calculations with the non-perturbatively improved (`Alpha') action and operators on a 24^3 \times 64 lattice at beta = 6.2, in the quenched approximation. The analysis was performed in a way consistent with O(a) improvement. We obtained: reasonable agreement with experiment for the hyperfine splitting; f_K=156(17) MeV, f_pi =139(22) MeV, f_K/f_pi = 1.13(4) ; f_{K*}=219(7) MeV, f_rho =199(15) MeV, f_phi =235(4) MeV; f_{K*}^{T}(2 GeV) = 178(10) MeV, f_rho^{T}(2 GeV) =165(11) MeV, where f_V^{T} is the coupling of the tensor current to the vector mesons; the chiral condensate <\bar{q}q>^\bar{MS} (2 GeV)= - (253 +/- 25 MeV)^3. Our results are compared to those obtained with the unimproved Wilson action. We also verified that the free-boson lattice dispersion relation describes our results very accurately for a large range of momenta.

Non-perturbatively Renormalized Light-Quark Masses with the Alpha Action

We have computed the light quark masses using the O(a^2) improved Alpha action, in the quenched approximation. The renormalized masses have been obtained non-perturbatively. By eliminating the systematic error coming from the truncation of the perturbative series, our procedure removes the discrepancies, observed in previous calculations, between the results obtained using the vector and the axial-vector Ward identities. It also gives values of the quark masses larger than those obtained by computing the renormalization constants using (boosted) perturbation theory. Our main results, in the RI (MOM) scheme and at a renormalization scale μ=2 GeV, are m^{RI}_s= 138(15) MeV and m^{RI}_l= 5.6(5) MeV, where m^{RI}_s is the mass of the strange quark and m^{RI}_l=(m^{RI}_u+m^{RI}_d)/2 the average mass of the up-down quarks. From these results, which have been obtained non-perturbatively, by using continuum perturbation theory we derive the \bar{MS} masses, at the same scale, and the renormalization group invariant (m^{RGI}) masses. We find m^{NLO \bar{MS}}_s= 121(13)$ MeV and m^{NLO\bar{MS}}_l= 4.9(4) MeV at the next-to-leading order; m^{N^2LO \bar{MS}}_s= 111(12) MeV, m^{N^2LO \bar{MS}}_l= 4.5(4) MeV, m_s^{RGI}= 177(19) MeV and m^{RGI}_l= 7.2(6) MeV at the next-to-next-to-leading order.

Quark Mass Renormalization in the $\MSbar$ and RI schemes up to the NNLO order

We compute the relation between the quark mass defined in the minimal modified $\MSbar$ scheme and the mass defined in the ``Regularization Invariant" scheme (RI), up to the NNLO order. The RI scheme is conveniently adopted in lattice QCD calculations of the quark mass, since the relevant renormalization constants in this scheme can be evaluated in a non-perturbative way. The NNLO contribution to the conversion factor between the quark mass in the two schemes is found to be large, typically of the same order of the NLO correction at a scale $μ\sim 2$ GeV. We also give the NNLO relation between the quark mass in the RI scheme and the renormalization group-invariant mass.

Improved Renormalization of Lattice Operators: A Critical Reappraisal

We systematically examine various proposals which aim at increasing the accuracy in the determination of the renormalization of two-fermion lattice operators. We concentrate on three finite quantities which are particularly suitable for our study: the renormalization constants of the vector and axial currents and the ratio of the renormalization constants of the scalar and pseudoscalar densities. We calculate these quantities in boosted perturbation theory, with several running boosted couplings, at the "optimal" scale q*. We find that the results of boosted perturbation theory are usually (but not always) in better agreement with non-perturbative determinations of the renormalization constants than those obtained with standard perturbation theory. The finite renormalization constants of two-fermion lattice operators are also obtained non-perturbatively, using Ward Identities, both with the Wilson and the tree-level Clover improved actions, at fixed cutoff ($β$=6.4 and 6.0 respectively). In order to amplify finite cutoff effects, the quark masses (in lattice units) are varied in a large interval 0<am<1. We find that discretization effects are always large with the Wilson action, despite our relatively small value of the lattice spacing ($a^{-1} \simeq 3.7$ GeV). With the Clover action discretization errors are significantly reduced at small quark mass, even though our lattice spacing is larger ($a^{-1} \simeq 2$ GeV). However, these errors remain substantial in the heavy quark region. We have implemented a proposal for reducing O(am) effects, which consists in matching the lattice quantities to their continuum counterparts in the free theory. We find that this approach still leaves appreciable, mass dependent, discretization effects.

Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to $ΔF =2$ effective Hamiltonians

The most general QCD next-to-leading anomalous-dimension matrix of all possible four-fermion, dimension-six $ΔF=2$ operators is computed. The results of this calculation can be used in many phenomenological applications, among which the most important are those related to theoretical predictions of $K^0-\bar{K}^0 $ and $B^0-\bar{B}^0$ mixing in several extension of the Standard Model (Supersymmetry, left-right symmetric, multi-Higgs models, etc.), to estimates of the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ width difference, $ΔΓ_{B_s}$, and to the calculation of the $O(1/m_b^3)$ corrections for inclusive b-hadron decay rates.

Determinations of Standard Model Parameters from Lattice QCD

In this talk I review some recent results from lattice QCD calculations which aim to a more accurate determination of the Standard Model parameters in the quark sector. After a review of our current knowledge of these parameters, I present lattice results for the strange, charm and bottom quark masses, the CKM matrix element $V_{ub}$ and the complex CKM phase $δ$, which induces CP violation effects in the Standard Model with three generations.

QCDF90: Lattice QCD with Fortran 90

We have used Fortran 90 to implement lattice QCD. We have designed a set of machine independent modules that define fields (gauge, fermions, scalars, etc...) and overloaded operators for all possible operations between fields, matrices and numbers. With these modules it is very simple to write high-level efficient programs for QCD simulations. To increase performances our modules also implements assignments that do not require temporaries, and a machine independent precision definition. We have also created a useful compression procedure for storing the lattice configurations, and a parallel implementation of the random generators. We have widely tested our program and modules on several parallel and single processor supercomputers obtaining excellent performances.

QCDF90: A set of Fortran 90 modules for a high-level, efficient implementation of QCD simulations

We present a complete set of Fortran 90 modules that can be used to write very compact, efficient, and high level QCD programs. The modules define fields (gauge, fermi, generators, complex, and real fields) as abstract data types, together with simpler objects such as SU(3) matrices or color vectors. Overloaded operators are then defined to perform all possible operations between the fields that may be required in a QCD simulation. QCD programs written using these modules need not have cumbersome subroutines and can be very simple and transparent. This is illustrated with two simple example programs.

Towards a lattice calculation of the coefficients of the QCD chiral Lagrangian

We discuss a general strategy to compute the coefficients of QCD chiral Lagrangian by using the lattice regularization of QCD with Wilson fermions. This procedure requires the introduction of an effective Lagrangian for lattice QCD as an intermediate step in the calculation. The continuum QCD chiral Lagrangian can be then obtained by expanding the lattice effective Lagrangian in increasing powers of the external momenta. A suitable renormalization procedure is required to account for the chiral symmetry breaking introduced by the Wilson term in the lattice action. In anticipation of a numerical simulation, the lattice effective Lagrangian is computed analytically and investigated in the strong coupling and large $N$ limit

QCD chiral Lagrangian on the lattice, strong coupling expansion and Ward identities with Wilson fermions

We discuss a general strategy to compute the coefficients of the QCD chiral Lagrangian using lattice QCD with Wilson fermions. This procedure requires the introduction of a lattice chiral Lagrangian as an intermediate step in the calculation. The QCD chiral Lagrangian is then obtained by expanding the lattice effective theory in increasing powers of the lattice spacing and the external momenta. In order to investigate the consequences of the chiral symmetry breaking induced by the Wilson term, we study the lattice chiral Lagrangian at the leading order of the strong coupling and large $N$ expansion. We show that the effects of the Wilson term can be conveniently taken into account, in the lattice effective theory, by a suitable renormalization procedure. In particular, we show that, at the leading order of the strong coupling and large N expansion, the chiral symmetry is exactly recovered on the lattice provided that the bare quark mass and the lattice operators are properly renormalized.

Chiral behaviour of the lattice $B_K$-parameter with the Wilson and Clover Actions at $β= 6.0$

We present results for the kaon $B$-parameter $B_K$ from a sample of $200$ configurations using the Wilson action and $460$ configurations using the SW-Clover action, on a $18^3 \times 64$ lattice at $β=6.0$. We compare results obtained by renormalizing the relevant operator with different ``boosted" values of the strong coupling constant $α_s$. In the case of the SW-Clover action, we also use the operator renormalized non-perturbatively. In the Wilson case, we observe a strong dependence of $B_K$ on the prescription adopted for $α_s$, contrary to the results of the Clover case which are almost unaffected by the choice of the coupling. We also find that the matrix element of the operator renormalized non-perturbatively has a better chiral behaviour. This gives us our best estimate of the renormalization group invariant $B$-parameter, $\hat B_K=0.86 \pm 0.15$.

Quenched $B_K$-parameter with the Wilson and Clover actions at $β= 6.0$

We present results for the Kaon $B$ parameter from a sample of $200$ configurations using the Wilson action and $460$ configurations using the Clover action, on a $18^3 \times 64$ lattice at $β=6.0$. A slight improvement of the chiral behaviour of $B_K$ is observed due to the Clover action. We have also compared the results for $B_K$ obtained from two different procedures for the boosting of the coupling constant $g$. We observe a strong dependence of $B_K$ on the prescription adopted for $g$ in the Wilson case, contrary to the results of the Clover case which are almost unaffected by the choice of $g$. Combining some recently obtained non perturbative estimates for the renormalisation constants with our Clover matrix element, we observe a significant improvement in the chiral behaviour of $B_K$.
