A Semidefinite Programming approach for minimizing ordered weighted averages of rational functions

This paper considers the problem of minimizing the ordered weighted average (or ordered median) function of finitely many rational functions over compact semi-algebraic sets. Ordered weighted averages of rational functions are not, in general, neither rational functions nor the supremum of rational functions so that current results available for the minimization of rational functions cannot be applied to handle these problems. We prove that the problem can be transformed into a new problem embedded in a higher dimension space where it admits a convenient representation. This reformulation admits a hierarchy of SDP relaxations that approximates, up to any degree of accuracy, the optimal value of those problems. We apply this general framework to a broad family of continuous location problems showing that some difficult problems (convex and non-convex) that up to date could only be solved on the plane and with Euclidean distance, can be reasonably solved with different $\ell_p$-norms and in any finite dimension space. We illustrate this methodology with some extensive computational results on location problems in the plane and the 3-dimension space.

The set of numerical semigroups of a given genus

In this paper we present a new approach to construct the set of numerical semigroups with a fixed genus. Our methodology is based on the construction of the set of numerical semigroups with fixed Frobenius number and genus. An equivalence relation is given over this set and a tree structure is defined for each equivalence class. We also provide a more efficient algorithm based in the translation of a numerical semigroup to its so-called Kunz-coordinates vector.

A semilattice structure for the set of numerical semigroups with fixed Frobenius number

We present a procedure to enumerate the whole set of numerical semigroups with a given Frobenius number F, S(F). The methodology is based on the construction of a partition of S(F) by a congruence relation. We identify exactly one irreducible and one homogeneous numerical semigroup at each class in the relation, and from those two elements we reconstruct the whole class. An alternative more efficient method is proposed based on the use of the Kunz-coordinates vectors of the elements in S(F).

The tree of irreducible numerical semigroups with fixed Frobenius number

In this paper we present a procedure to build the set of irreducible numerical semigroups with a fixed Frobenius number. The construction gives us a rooted tree structure for this set. Furthermore, by using the notion of Kunz-coordinates vector we translate the problem of finding such a tree into the problem of manipulating 0-1 vectors with as many component as the Frobenius number.

m-irreducible numerical semigroups

In this paper we introduce the notion of m-irreducibility that extends the standard concept of irreducibility of a numerical semigroup when the multiplicity is fixed. We analyze the structure of the set of m-irreducible numerical semigroups, we give some properties of these numerical semigroups and we present algorithms to compute the decomposition of a numerical semigroups with multiplicity m into m-irreducible numerical semigroups.

The Fabra-ROA Baker-Nunn Camera at Observatori Astronòmic del Montsec: a wide-field imaging facility for exoplanet transit detection

A number of Baker-Nunn Camera (BNC) were manufactured by Smithsonian Institution during the 60s as optical tracking systems for artificial satellites with optimal optical and mechanical specifications. One of them was installed at the Real Instituto y Observatorio de la Armada (ROA). We have conducted a profound refurbishment project of the telescope to be installed at Observatori Astronòmic del Montsec (OAdM). As a result, the BNC offers the largest combination of a huge FOV (4.4$°$x4.4$°$) and aperture (leading to a limiting magnitude of V$\sim$20). These specifications, together with their remote and robotic natures, allows this instrument to face an observational program of exoplanets detection by means of transit technique with high signal-to-noise ratio in the appropiate magnitude range.

Categorical non abelian cohomology, and the Schreier theory of groupoids

By regarding the classical non abelian cohomology of groups from a 2-dimensional categorical viewpoint, we are led to a non abelian cohomology of groupoids which continues to satisfy classification, interpretation and representation theorems generalizing the classical ones. This categorical approach is based on the fact that if groups are regarded as categories, then, on the one hand, crossed modules are 2-groupoids and, cocycles are lax 2-functors and the cocycle conditions are precisely the coherence axioms for lax 2-functors, and, on the other hand group extensions are fibrations of categories. Furthermore, $n$-simplices in the nerve of a 2-category are lax 2-functors.

A Full and faithful Nerve for 2-categories

The notion of geometric nerve of a 2-category (Street, \cite{refstreet}) provides a full and faithful functor if regarded as defined on the category of 2-categories and lax 2-functors. Furthermore, lax 2-natural transformations between lax 2-functors give rise to homotopies between the corresponding simplicial maps. These facts allow us to prove a representation theorem of the general non abelian cohomology of groupoids (classifying non abelian extensions of groupoids) by means of homotopy classes of simplicial maps.
