Boosting terahertz-radiation power with two-color circularly polarized midinfrared laser pulses

A way to considerably enhance terahertz radiation, emitted in the interaction of intense mid-infrared laser pulses with atomic gases, in both the total energy and the electric-field amplitude is suggested. The scheme is based on the application of a two-color field consisting of a strong circularly polarized mid-infrared pulse with wavelengths of $1.6÷4\,μ{\rm m}$ and its linearly or circularly polarized second harmonic of lower intensity. By combining the strong-field approximation for the ionization of a single atom with particle-in-cell simulations of the collective dynamics of the generated plasma it is shown that the application of such two-color circularly polarized laser pulses may lead to an order-of-magnitude increase in the energy emitted in the terahertz frequency domain as well as in a considerable enhancement in the maximal electric field of the terahertz pulse. Our results support recently reported experimental and numerical findings.

Slow electrons from clusters in strong Xray pulses

Electrons released from clusters through strong Xray pulses show broad kinetic-energy spectra, extending from the atomic excess energy down to the threshold, where usually a strong peak appears. These low-energy electrons are normally attributed to evaporation from the nano-plasma formed in the highly-charged clusters. Here, it is shown that also directly emitted photo electrons generate a pronounced spectral feature close to threshold. Furthermore, we give an analytical approximation for the direct photo-electron spectrum.

Dopant induced ignition of helium nanodroplets in intense few-cycle laser pulses

We demonstrate ultrafast resonant energy absorption of rare-gas doped He nanodroplets from intense few-cycle (~10 fs) laser pulses. We find that less than 10 dopant atoms "ignite" the droplet to generate a non-spherical electronic nanoplasma resulting ultimately in complete ionization and disintegration of all atoms, although the pristine He droplet is transparent for the laser intensities applied. Our calculations at those intensities reveal that the minimal pulse length required for ignition is about 9 fs.

Coulomb explosion of uniformly charged spheroids

A simple, semi-analytical model is proposed for non-relativistic Coulomb explosion of a uniformly charged spheroid. This model allows us to derive the time-dependent particle energy distributions. Simple expressions are also given for the characteristic explosion time and maximum particle energies in the limits of extreme prolate and oblate spheroids as well as for the sphere. Results of particle simulations are found to be in remarkably good agreement with the model.

Strong field dynamics with ultrashort electron wave packet replicas

We investigate theoretically electron dynamics under a VUV attosecond pulse train which has a controlled phase delay with respect to an additional strong infrared laser field. Using the strong field approximation and the fact that the attosecond pulse is short compared to the excited electron dynamics, we arrive at a minimal analytical model for the kinetic energy distribution of the electron as well as the photon absorption probability as a function of the phase delay between the fields. We analyze the dynamics in terms of electron wave packet replicas created by the attosecond pulses. The absorption probability shows strong modulations as a function of the phase delay for VUV photons of energy comparable to the binding energy of the electron, while for higher photon energies the absorption probability does not depend on the delay, in line with the experimental observations for helium and argon, respectively.

Excitation and relaxation in atom-cluster collisions

Electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in atom-cluster collisions are treated simultaneously and self-consistently by combining time-dependent density functional theory with classical molecular dynamics. The gradual change of the excitation mechanisms (electronic and vibrational) as well as the related relaxation phenomena (phase transitions and fragmentation) are studied in a common framework as a function of the impact energy (eV...MeV). Cluster "transparency" characterized by practically undisturbed atom-cluster penetration is predicted to be an important reaction mechanism within a particular window of impact energies.

Charge Transfer in Cluster-Atom Collisions Studied with Non-Adiabatic Quantum Molecular Dynamics

Charge transfer in collisions of Na_n^+ cluster ions with Cs atoms is investigated theoretically in the microscopic framework of non-adiabatic quantum molecular dynamics. The competing reaction channels and related processes affecting the charge transfer (electronic excitations, fragmentation, temperature) are described. Absolute charge transfer cross sections for Na_n^+(2.7 keV) + Cs --> Na_n + Cs^+ have been calculated in the size range 4 <= n <= 11 reproducing the size dependence of the experimental cross sections. The energy dependence of the cross section is predicted for n=4,7,9. An exotic charge transfer channel producing Cs^- is found to have a finite probability.
