A purely mechanical system realizing a Coulomb-like interaction

We solve in closed form a one-dimensional relativistic system: two masses interacting only through elastic collisions with a massless mediator bouncing between them. Momenta, times, and positions are hyperbolic functions of the collision index. The mediator energy, interpreted as the pair's effective potential, obeys an exact discrete Coulomb law, $V\propto 1/r$, with a Lorentz-invariant action as coupling. A massive Newtonian mediator instead transmits a $1/r^{3}$ force; one adiabatic invariant traces both laws to the mediator's dispersion relation. Continued to negative mediator energy, the closed forms turn trigonometric, binding a one-dimensional mechanical analog of the Coulomb atom.

Resummation of threshold double logarithms in quarkonium fragmentation functions

We develop a formalism for resumming threshold double logarithms that appear in fragmentation functions for production of heavy quarkonia. Threshold singularities appear in fixed-order calculations of quarkonium fragmentation functions in the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism due to radiation of soft gluons. Because of this, fixed-order quarkonium fragmentation functions are not positive definite, and can lead to unphysically negative cross sections. This problem can be resolved by resumming threshold logarithms to all orders in perturbation theory, which renders the fragmentation functions finite and ensures the positivity of cross sections. We present a detailed derivation of the resummation formalism and derive the formula for resummed quarkonium fragmentation functions, which can be computed entirely within perturbation theory without the need for nonperturbative model functions.

$J/\psi$ Production Within Jets at the EIC

We present theoretical predictions for the transverse-momentum distribution of $J/\psi$ produced within jets at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Utilizing the semi-inclusive fragmenting jet function (FJF) framework, our calculation achieves next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in the strong coupling and leading-logarithmic (LL) accuracy by resumming both collinear and threshold logarithms. In contrast to the gluon-dominated regime of the LHC, EIC photoproduction is characterized by an enhanced quark-initiated component, offering a complementary probe into the charmonium production mechanism governed by nonperturbative long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs). We examine the impact of representative LDME sets, demonstrating the EIC's distinct discriminating power for the mechanisms. We find that quark contributions are particularly significant in the small momentum fraction region. This region is also shown to be sensitive to both the jet radius $R$ and the experimental muon identification criteria for the $J/\psi \to \mu^+\mu^-$ decay channel. These findings establish quarkonium-in-jet observables at the EIC as a vital, independent probe for constraining the production mechanisms and advancing our understanding of heavy quarkonium formation.

Resummation of threshold double logarithms in inclusive production of heavy quarkonium

We resum threshold double logarithms in inclusive production of heavy quarkonium that arise from singularities near the boundary of phase space. This resolves the catastrophic failure in the conventional approach based on fixed-order perturbation theory calculations in nonrelativistic QCD, where quarkonium cross sections at large transverse momentum can turn negative. We identify the root cause of this negative cross section problem as the appearance of threshold logarithms in radiative corrections, and resum them to all orders in perturbation theory at the leading double logarithmic level. We find that resummation of threshold logarithms is imperative for describing measured $J/\psi$ production rates at large transverse momentum.

Scalar dark matter multiplet of global $O(N)$ symmetry

We study two types of models involving a scalar dark matter multiplet of global $O(N)$ symmetry. These models are distinguished by the absence (Type I) or presence (Type II) of a scalar mediator with $Z_{2}$ symmetry. We derive the allowed regions for the dark matter mass and new scalar couplings based on constraints from Higgs invisible decay, the relic abundance of dark matter, and the spin-independent dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section. Within the allowed parameter space, we also discuss the vacuum stability of the Higgs potential and the perturbativity of the scalar couplings in both models. We find that the Type I model cannot achieve stable electroweak vacuum, whereas the Type II model can have both a stable vacuum and perturbative couplings up to the Planck scale.

Resummation of threshold double logarithms in hadroproduction of heavy quarkonium

We resum threshold double logarithms that appear in inclusive production of heavy quarkonium. This resolves the catastrophic failure of fixed-order perturbation theory where quarkonium cross sections at large transverse momentum can turn negative due to large radiative corrections. We find that resummation is imperative for describing measured prompt production rates of $J/\psi$ at large transverse momentum.

Mechanical Snell's Law

We investigate the motion of a massive particle constrained to move along a path consisting of two line segments on a vertical plane under an arbitrary conservative force. By fixing the starting and end points of the track and varying the vertex horizontally, we find the least-time path. We define the angles of incidence and refraction similar to the refraction of a light ray. It is remarkable that the ratio of the sines of these angles is identical to the ratio of the average speeds on the two partial paths as long as the horizontal component of the conservative force vanishes.

Bra-Ket Representation of the Inertia Tensor

We employ Dirac's bra-ket notation to define the inertia tensor operator that is independent of the choice of bases or coordinate system. The principal axes and the corresponding principal values for the elliptic plate are determined only based on the geometry. By making use of a general symmetric tensor operator, we develop a method of diagonalization that is convenient and intuitive in determining the eigenvector. We demonstrate that the bra-ket approach greatly simplifies the computation of the inertia tensor with an example of an $N$-dimensional ellipsoid. The exploitation of the bra-ket notation to compute the inertia tensor in classical mechanics should provide undergraduate students with a strong background necessary to deal with abstract quantum mechanical problems.

Three-Body Inertia Tensor

We derive a general formula for the inertia tensor of a three-body system. By employing three independent Lagrange undetermined multipliers to express the vectors corresponding to the sides in terms of the position vectors of the vertices, we present the general covariant expression for the inertia tensor of the three particles of different masses. If $m_a/a=m_b/b=m_c/c=\rho$, then the center of mass coincides with the incenter of the triangle and the moment of inertia about the normal axis passing the center of mass is $I=\rho abc$, where $m_a$, $m_b$, and $m_c$ are the masses of the particles at $A$, $B$, and $C$, respectively, and $a$, $b$, and $c$ are the lengths of the line segments $\overline{BC}$, $\overline{CA}$, and $\overline{AB}$, respectively. The derivation and the corresponding results are closely related to the famous Heron's formula for the area of a triangle.

Covariant calculation of a two-loop test of nonrelativistic QCD factorization

We test the nonrelativistic QCD factorization conjecture for inclusive quarkonium production at two loops by carrying out a covariant calculation of the nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) long-distance matrix element (LDME) for a heavy-quark pair in an $S$-wave, color-octet state to fragment into a heavy-quark pair in a color-singlet state of arbitrary orbital angular momentum. The NRQCD factorization conjecture for the universality of the LDME requires that infrared divergences that it contains be independent of the direction of the Wilson line that appears in its definition. We find this to be the case in our calculation. The results of our calculation differ in some respects from those of a previous calculation that was carried out by Nayak, Qiu, and Sterman using light-cone methods. We have identified the sources of some of these differences. The results of both calculations are consistent with the NRQCD factorization conjecture. However, the general principle that underlies this confirmation of NRQCD factorization at two-loop order has yet to be revealed.

Pseudoscalar Quarkonium+gamma Production at NLL+NLO accuracy

We consider the exclusive pseudoscalar heavy-quarkonium (eta_{b,c}) production in association with a photon at future lepton colliders where the collider energies of O(10^2) GeV are far greater than the quarkonium mass. At these energies, the logarithm of mass to collision energy becomes increasingly large hence its resummation becomes particularly important. By making use of the light-cone-distribution factorization formula, we resum the logarithms up to next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy (NLL) that corresponds to order-alpha_s accuracy. We combine the resummed result with a known fixed-order result at next-to-leading order (NLO) such that both resummed-logarithmic terms and non-logarithmic terms are included at the same order in alpha_s. This allowed us to provide reliable predictions at accuracies of order alpha_s ranging from relatively low energies near quarkonium mass to the collider energies of O(10^2) GeV. We also include the leading relativistic corrections resummed at leading-logarithmic accuracy. Our prediction at the Belle energy is comparable with fixed-order predictions in literatures while it shows a large deviation from a recent Belle's upper limit by about 4 sigma. Finally, we make predictions for the energies of future Z and Higgs factories.

Combinatorics in tensor integral reduction

We illustrate a rigorous approach to express the totally symmetric isotropic tensors of arbitrary rank in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space as a linear combination of products of Kronecker deltas. By making full use of the symmetries, one can greatly reduce the efforts to compute cumbersome angular integrals into straightforward combinatoric counts. This method is generalized into the cases in which such symmetries are present in subspaces. We further demonstrate the mechanism of the tensor-integral reduction that is widely used in various physics problems such as perturbative calculations of the gauge-field theory in which divergent integrals are regularized in $d=4-2\epsilon$ space-time dimensions. The main derivation is given in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space. The generalization of the result to the Minkowski space is also discussed in order to provide graduate students and researchers with techniques of tensor-integral reduction for particle physics problems.

Fragmentation contributions to hadroproduction of prompt $J/\psi$, $\chi_{cJ}$, and $\psi(2S)$ states

We compute fragmentation corrections to hadroproduction of the quarkonium states $J/\psi$, $\chi_{cJ}$, and $\psi(2S)$ at leading power in $m_c^2/p_T^2$, where $m_c$ is the charm-quark mass and $p_T$ is the quarkonium transverse momentum. The computation is carried out in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD. We include corrections to the parton-production cross sections through next-to-leading order in the strong coupling $\alpha_s$ and corrections to the fragmentation functions through second order in $\alpha_s$. We also sum leading logarithms of $p_T^2/m_c^2$ to all orders in perturbation theory. We find that, when we combine these leading-power fragmentation corrections with fixed-order calculations through next-to-leading order in $\alpha_s$, we are able to obtain good fits for $p_T\geq 10$ GeV to hadroproduction cross sections that were measured at the Tevatron and the LHC. Using values for the nonperturbative long-distance matrix elements that we extract from the cross-section fits, we make predictions for the polarizations of the quarkonium states. We obtain good agreement with measurements of the polarizations, with the exception of the CDF Run II measurement of the prompt $J/\psi$ polarization, for which the agreement is only fair. In the predictions for the prompt-$J/\psi$ cross sections and polarizations, we take into account feeddown from the $\chi_{cJ}$ and $\psi(2S)$ states.

Fragmentation contributions to $J/\psi$ photoproduction at HERA

We compute leading-power fragmentation corrections to $J/\psi$ photoproduction at DESY HERA, making use of the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach. Our calculations include parton production cross sections through order $\alpha_s^3$, fragmentation functions though order $\alpha_s^2$, and leading logarithms of the transverse momentum divided by the charm-quark mass to all orders in $\alpha_s$. We find that the leading-power fragmentation corrections, beyond those that are included through next-to-leading order in $\alpha_s$, are small relative to the fixed-order contributions through next-to-leading order in $\alpha_s$. Consequently, an important discrepancy remains between the experimental measurements of the $J/\psi$ photoproduction cross section and predictions that make use of nonrelativistic-QCD long-distance matrix elements that are extracted from the $J/\psi$ hadroproduction cross-section and polarization data.

Quark fragmentation into spin-triplet $S$-wave quarkonium

We compute fragmentation functions for a quark to fragment to a quarkonium through an $S$-wave spin-triplet heavy quark-antiquark pair. We consider both color-singlet and color-octet heavy quark-antiquark ($Q\bar Q$) pairs. We give results for the case in which the fragmenting quark and the quark that is a constituent of the quarkonium have different flavors and for the case in which these quarks have the same flavors. Our results for the sum over all spin polarizations of the $Q\bar Q$ pairs confirm previous results. Our results for longitudinally polarized $Q\bar Q$ pairs agree with previous calculations for the same flavor cases and correct an error in a previous calculation for the different-flavor case.

Fragmentation contributions to J/psi production at the Tevatron and the LHC

We compute leading-power fragmentation corrections to $J/\psi$ production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We find that, when these corrections are combined with perturbative corrections through next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$, we obtain a good fit to high-$p_T$ cross section data from the CDF and CMS Collaborations. The fitted long-distance matrix elements lead to predictions of near-zero $J/\psi$ polarization in the helicity frame at large $p_T$.

Order-v^4 Relativistic Corrections to Gluon Fragmentation into ^3S_1 Quarkonium

We compute the relativistic corrections to the color-singlet contribution to gluon fragmentation into a J/psi at relative order v^4, making use of the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization approach. The corresponding full-QCD process exhibits infrared divergences that manifest themselves as single and double poles in epsilon in 4-2epsilon dimensions. We isolate the infrared-divergent contributions and treat them analytically. In the matching of full QCD to NRQCD, the pole contributions are absorbed into long-distance NRQCD matrix elements. The renormalizations of the ultraviolet divergences of the long-distance NRQCD matrix elements involve Born and one-loop single-pole counterterm contributions and Born double-pole counterterm contributions. While the order-v^4 contribution enhances the J/psi hadroproduction rate for the color-singlet channel substantially, this contribution is not important numerically in comparison with the color-octet contributions. We also find that the ^3P_J color-octet channel in the gluon fragmentation function contributes to J/psi hadroproduction significantly in comparison with the complete contribution of next-to-leading order in alpha_s in that channel.

Higher-order relativistic corrections to gluon fragmentation into spin-triplet S-wave quarkonium

We compute the relative-order-v^4 contribution to gluon fragmentation into quarkonium in the 3S1 color-singlet channel, using the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization approach. The QCD fragmentation process contains infrared divergences that produce single and double poles in epsilon in 4-2epsilon dimensions. We devise subtractions that isolate the pole contributions, which ultimately are absorbed into long-distance NRQCD matrix elements in the NRQCD matching procedure. The matching procedure involves two-loop renormalizations of the NRQCD operators. The subtractions are integrated over the phase space analytically in 4-2epsilon dimensions, and the remainder is integrated over the phase-space numerically. We find that the order-v^4 contribution is enhanced relative to the order-v^0 contribution. However, the order-v^4 contribution is not important numerically at the current level of precision of quarkonium-hadroproduction phenomenology. We also estimate the contribution to hadroproduction from gluon fragmentation into quarkonium in the 3PJ color-octet channel and find that it is significant in comparison to the complete next-to-leading-order-in-alpha_s contribution in that channel.
