Ternary Binomial and Trinomial Bent Functions in the Completed Maiorana-McFarland Class

Two classes of ternary bent functions of degree four with two and three terms in the univariate representation that belong to the completed Maiorana-McFarland class are found. Binomials are mappings $\F_{3^{4k}}\mapsto\fthree$ given by $f(x)=\Tr_{4k}\big(a_1 x^{2(3^k+1)}+a_2 x^{(3^k+1)^2}\big)$, where $a_1$ is a nonsquare in $\F_{3^{4k}}$ and $a_2$ is defined explicitly by $a_1$. Particular subclasses of the binomial bent functions we found can be represented by exceptional polynomials over $\fthreek$. Bent trinomials are mappings $\F_{3^{2k}}\mapsto\fthree$ given by $f(x)=\Tr_n\big(a_1 x^{2\cdot3^k+4} + a_2 x^{3^k+5} + a_3 x^2\big)$ with coefficients explicitly defined by the parity of $k$. The proof is based on a new criterion that allows checking bentness by analyzing first- and second-order derivatives of $f$ in the direction of a chosen $n/2$-dimensional subspace.

Determining the covering radius of all generalized Zetterberg codes in odd characteristic

For an integer $s\ge 1$, let $\mathcal{C}_s(q_0)$ be the generalized Zetterberg code of length $q_0^s+1$ over the finite field $\F_{q_0}$ of odd characteristic. Recently, Shi, Helleseth, and \"{O}zbudak (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 69(11): 7025-7048, 2023) determined the covering radius of $\mathcal{C}_s(q_0)$ for $q_0^s \not \equiv 7 \pmod{8}$, and left the remaining case as an open problem. In this paper, we develop a general technique involving arithmetic of finite fields and algebraic curves over finite fields to determine the covering radius of all generalized Zetterberg codes for $q_0^s \equiv 7 \pmod{8}$, which therefore solves this open problem. We also introduce the concept of twisted half generalized Zetterberg codes of length $\frac{q_0^s+1}{2}$, and show the same results hold for them. As a result, we obtain some quasi-perfect codes.

Further Investigation on Differential Properties of the Generalized Ness-Helleseth Function

Let $n$ be an odd positive integer, $p$ be a prime with $p\equiv3\pmod4$, $d_{1} = {{p^{n}-1}\over {2}} -1 $ and $d_{2} =p^{n}-2$. The function defined by $f_u(x)=ux^{d_{1}}+x^{d_{2}}$ is called the generalized Ness-Helleseth function over $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$, where $u\in\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$. It was initially studied by Ness and Helleseth in the ternary case. In this paper, for $p^n \equiv 3 \pmod 4$ and $p^n \ge7$, we provide the necessary and sufficient condition for $f_u(x)$ to be an APN function. In addition, for each $u$ satisfying $\chi(u+1) = \chi(u-1)$, the differential spectrum of $f_u(x)$ is investigated, and it is expressed in terms of some quadratic character sums of cubic polynomials, where $\chi(\cdot)$ denotes the quadratic character of $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$.

An updated review on cross-correlation of m-sequences

Maximum-length sequences (m-sequences for short) over finite fields are generated by linear feedback shift registers with primitive characteristic polynomials. These sequences have nice mathematical structures and good randomness properties that are favorable in practical applications. During the past five decades, the crosscorrelation between m-sequences of the same period has been intensively studied, and a particular research focus has been on investigating the cross-correlation spectra with few possibles values. In this chapter we summarize all known results on this topic in the literature and promote several open problems for future research.

Further Investigations on Nonlinear Complexity of Periodic Binary Sequences

Nonlinear complexity is an important measure for assessing the randomness of sequences. In this paper we investigate how circular shifts affect the nonlinear complexities of finite-length binary sequences and then reveal a more explicit relation between nonlinear complexities of finite-length binary sequences and their corresponding periodic sequences. Based on the relation, we propose two algorithms that can generate all periodic binary sequences with any prescribed nonlinear complexity.

The weight enumerator polynomials of the lifted codes of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes

Determining the weight distribution of a code is an old and fundamental topic in coding theory that has been thoroughly studied. In 1977, Helleseth, Kl{\o}ve, and Mykkeltveit presented a weight enumerator polynomial of the lifted code over $\mathbb{F}_{q^\ell}$ of a $q$-ary linear code with significant combinatorial properties, which can determine the support weight distribution of this linear code. The Solomon-Stiffler codes are a family of famous Griesmer codes, which were proposed by Solomon and Stiffler in 1965. In this paper, we determine the weight enumerator polynomials of the lifted codes of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes using some combinatorial properties of subspaces. As a result, we determine the support weight distributions of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes. In particular, we determine the weight hierarchies of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes.

Binary self-orthogonal codes which meet the Griesmer bound or have optimal minimum distances

The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we characterize the existence of binary self-orthogonal codes meeting the Griesmer bound by employing Solomon-Stiffler codes and some related residual codes. Second, using such a characterization, we determine the exact value of $d_{so}(n,7)$ except for five special cases and the exact value of $d_{so}(n,8)$ except for 41 special cases, where $d_{so}(n,k)$ denotes the largest minimum distance among all binary self-orthogonal $[n, k]$ codes. Currently, the exact value of $d_{so}(n,k)$ $(k \le 6)$ was determined by Shi et al. (2022). In addition, we develop a general method to prove the nonexistence of some binary self-orthogonal codes by considering the residual code of a binary self-orthogonal code.

On the Differential Properties of the Power Mapping $x^{p^m+2}$

Let $m$ be a positive integer and $p$ a prime. In this paper, we investigate the differential properties of the power mapping $x^{p^m+2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$, where $n=2m$ or $n=2m-1$. For the case $n=2m$, by transforming the derivative equation of $x^{p^m+2}$ and studying some related equations, we completely determine the differential spectrum of this power mapping. For the case $n=2m-1$, the derivative equation can be transformed to a polynomial of degree $p+3$. The problem is more difficult and we obtain partial results about the differential spectrum of $x^{p^m+2}$.

The connections among Hamming metric, $b$-symbol metric, and $r$-th generalized Hamming metric

The $r$-th generalized Hamming metric and the $b$-symbol metric are two different generalizations of Hamming metric. The former is used on the wire-tap channel of Type II, and the latter is motivated by the limitations of the reading process in high-density data storage systems and applied to a read channel that outputs overlapping symbols. In this paper, we study the connections among the three metrics (that is, Hamming metric, $b$-symbol metric, and $r$-th generalized Hamming metric) mentioned above and give a conjecture about the $b$-symbol Griesmer Bound for cyclic codes. %Furthermore, we explore the combinatorial function of the size of the $b$-symbol weight set of a code $C$.

The $q$-ary antiprimitive BCH codes

It is well-known that cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In recent years, antiprimitive BCH codes have attracted a lot of attention. The objective of this paper is to study BCH codes of this type over finite fields and analyse their parameters. Some lower bounds on the minimum distance of antiprimitive BCH codes are given. The BCH codes presented in this paper have good parameters in general, containing many optimal linear codes. In particular, two open problems about the minimum distance of BCH codes of this type are partially solved in this paper.

The Differential Spectrum of the Power Mapping $x^{p^n-3}$

Let $n$ be a positive integer and $p$ a prime. The power mapping $x^{p^n-3}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ has desirable differential properties, and its differential spectra for $p=2,\,3$ have been determined. In this paper, for any odd prime $p$, by investigating certain quadratic character sums and some equations over $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$, we determine the differential spectrum of $x^{p^n-3}$ with a unified approach. The obtained result shows that for any given odd prime $p$, the differential spectrum can be expressed explicitly in terms of $n$. Compared with previous results, a special elliptic curve over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ plays an important role in our computation for the general case $p \ge 5$.

A complete characterization of the APN property of a class of quadrinomials

In this paper, by the Hasse-Weil bound, we determine the necessary and sufficient condition on coefficients $a_1,a_2,a_3\in\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ with $n=2m$ such that $f(x) = {x}^{3\cdot2^m} + a_1x^{2^{m+1}+1} + a_2 x^{2^m+2} + a_3x^3$ is an APN function over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$. Our result resolves the first half of an open problem by Carlet in International Workshop on the Arithmetic of Finite Fields, 83-107, 2014.

The resolution of Niho's last conjecture concerning sequences, codes, and Boolean functions

A new method is used to resolve a long-standing conjecture of Niho concerning the crosscorrelation spectrum of a pair of maximum length linear recursive sequences of length $2^{2 m}-1$ with relative decimation $d=2^{m+2}-3$, where $m$ is even. The result indicates that there are at most five distinct crosscorrelation values. Equivalently, the result indicates that there are at most five distinct values in the Walsh spectrum of the power permutation $f(x)=x^d$ over a finite field of order $2^{2 m}$ and at most five distinct nonzero weights in the cyclic code of length $2^{2 m}-1$ with two primitive nonzeros $\alpha$ and $\alpha^d$. The method used to obtain this result proves constraints on the number of roots that certain seventh degree polynomials can have on the unit circle of a finite field. The method also works when $m$ is odd, in which case the associated crosscorrelation and Walsh spectra have at most six distinct values.

Binary linear codes with few weights from two-to-one functions

In this paper, we apply two-to-one functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ in two generic constructions of binary linear codes. We consider two-to-one functions in two forms: (1) generalized quadratic functions; and (2) $\left(x^{2^t}+x\right)^e$ with $\gcd(t, n)=1$ and $\gcd\left(e, 2^n-1\right)=1$. Based on the study of the Walsh transforms of those functions or their related-ones, we present many classes of linear codes with few nonzero weights, including one weight, three weights, four weights and five weights. The weight distributions of the proposed codes with one weight and with three weights are determined. In addition, we discuss the minimum distance of the dual of the constructed codes and show that some of them achieve the sphere packing bound. { Moreover, several examples show that some of our codes are optimal and some have the best known parameters.}

Cryptographically Strong Permutations from the Butterfly Structure

In this paper, we present infinite families of permutations of $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2n}}$ with high nonlinearity and boomerang uniformity $4$ from generalized butterfly structures. Both open and closed butterfly structures are considered. It appears, according to experiment results, that open butterflies do not produce permutation with boomerang uniformity $4$. For the closed butterflies, we propose the condition on coefficients $\alpha, \beta \in \mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ such that the functions $$V_i := (R_i(x,y), R_i(y,x))$$ with $R_i(x,y)=(x+\alpha y)^{2^i+1}+\beta y^{2^i+1}$ are permutations of $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}^2$ with boomerang uniformity $4$, where $n\geq 1$ is an odd integer and $\gcd(i, n)=1$. The main result in this paper consists of two major parts: the permutation property of $V_i$ is investigated in terms of the univariate form, and the boomerang uniformity is examined in terms of the original bivariate form. In addition, experiment results for $n=3, 5$ indicates that the proposed condition seems to cover all coefficients $\alpha, \beta \in \mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ that produce permutations $V_i$ with boomerang uniformity $4$. However, the experiment result shows that the quadratic permutation $V_i$ seems to be affine equivalent to the Gold function. Therefore, unluckily, we may not to obtain new permutations with boomerang uniformity $4$ from the butterfly structure.

Two-weight codes over the integers modulo a prime power

Let $p$ be a prime number. Irreducible cyclic codes of length $p^2-1$ and dimension $2$ over the integers modulo $p^h$ are shown to have exactly two nonzero Hamming weights. The construction uses the Galois ring of characteristic $p^h$ and order $p^{2h}.$ When the check polynomial is primitive, the code meets the Griesmer bound of (Shiromoto, Storme) (2012). By puncturing some projective codes are constructed. Those in length $p+1$ meet a Singleton-like bound of (Shiromoto , 2000). An infinite family of strongly regular graphs is constructed as coset graphs of the duals of these projective codes. A common cover of all these graphs, for fixed $p$, is provided by considering the Hensel lifting of these cyclic codes over the $p$-adic numbers.

Corrigendum to New Generalized Cyclotomic Binary Sequences of Period $p^2$

New generalized cyclotomic binary sequences of period $p^2$ are proposed in this paper, where $p$ is an odd prime. The sequences are almost balanced and their linear complexity is determined. The result shows that the proposed sequences have very large linear complexity if $p$ is a non-Wieferich prime.

Several Classes of Permutation Trinomials From Niho Exponents

Motivated by recent results on the constructions of permutation polynomials with few terms over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$, where $n$ is a positive even integer, we focus on the construction of permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ from Niho exponents. As a consequence, several new classes of permutation trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ are constructed from Niho exponents based on some subtle manipulation of solving equations with low degrees over finite fields.
