Sectional Curvature Pinching of Two-Step Nilmanifolds

We study the classical problem of sectional curvature pinching in the class of 2-step nilmanifolds, which are necessarily of mixed curvature. We show that the pinching constant of any 2-step nilmanifold lies in the compact interval $[-3, -\frac{3}{2}]$. The upper bound $-\frac{3}{2}$ is achieved by the complex Heisenberg group $\mathrm{Heis}_3(\mathbb{C})$ with a Ricci soliton metric. The upper bound exhibits rigidity: if a simply connected 2-step nilmanifold $N$ has the pinching constant $-\frac{3}{2}$, then $N$ admits a Ricci soliton complex Heisenberg group as a totally geodesic subgroup. On the other hand, the lower bound satisfies non-rigidity: any 2-step nilpotent Lie group admits a metric with pinching constant $-3$. This is derived by showing that there is an open neighborhood $U$ of $\mathrm{Heis}_3(\mathbb{R})\times \mathbb{R}^{n-3}$ in the space of $n$-dimensional 2-step nilmanifolds such that the pinching constant is $-3$ on $U$, and any 2-step nilpotent Lie group $N$ has a metric $g$ such that $(N,g)$ lies in $U$. In fact, if $N$ is not isomorphic to $\mathrm{Heis}_3(\mathbb{R})\times \mathbb{R}^{n-3}$, then there is a curve $g_t$ of metrics on $N$ with $(N,g_t)\in U$, showing that there are uncountably many left-invariant metrics on $N$ such that the pinching constant is $-3$. An algebraic characterization of a 2-step nilpotent Lie group that admits a metric with the pinching constant $-\frac{3}{2}$ is also given, and the pinching constants of various examples are computed.

Abstract Group Automorphisms of Two-Step Nilpotent Lie Groups and Partial Automatic Continuity

Any abstract (not necessarily continuous) group automorphism of a simple, compact Lie group must be continuous due to Cartan (1930) and van der Waerden (1933). The purpose of this paper is to study a similar question in nilpotent Lie groups. For uncountably many simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups, we show any abstract group automorphism is continuous ``up to discontinuity due to the center and ring automorphisms of $\mathbb{R}$-algebras.'' Such groups include (1) a generic simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie group $N$ with $\dim [N,N]\geq \frac{\dim N-1}{2}$, (2) all the 12 simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups of dimensions 6 or less, and (3) Iwasawa N-groups of simple Lie groups of rank 1, i.e., ``Heisenberg groups.'' All of the three cases are derived from one key result that gives a sufficient condition for the automorphism group to be of the type described above. Previously, only countably many simply connected nilpotent Lie groups were known to satisfy the same property. We obtain similar results for complex Lie groups as well. We also show if any Lie group $G$ and the group $N$ of (1) or (3) are isomorphic as abstract groups, then they are isomorphic as Lie groups.

Gyrokinetic Simulations of Solar Wind Turbulence from Ion to Electron Scales

The first three-dimensional, nonlinear gyrokinetic simulation of plasma turbulence resolving scales from the ion to electron gyroradius with a realistic mass ratio is presented, where all damping is provided by resolved physical mechanisms. The resulting energy spectra are quantitatively consistent with a magnetic power spectrum scaling of $k^{-2.8}$ as observed in \emph{in situ} spacecraft measurements of the "dissipation range" of solar wind turbulence. Despite the strongly nonlinear nature of the turbulence, the linear kinetic \Alfven wave mode quantitatively describes the polarization of the turbulent fluctuations. The collisional ion heating is measured at sub-ion-Larmor radius scales, which provides the first evidence of the ion entropy cascade in an electromagnetic turbulence simulation.

AstroGK: Astrophysical Gyrokinetics Code

The gyrokinetic simulation code AstroGK is developed to study fundamental aspects of kinetic plasmas and for applications mainly to astrophysical problems. AstroGK is an Eulerian slab code that solves the electromagnetic Gyrokinetic-Maxwell equations in five-dimensional phase space, and is derived from the existing gyrokinetics code GS2 by removing magnetic geometry effects. Algorithms used in the code are described. The code is benchmarked using linear and nonlinear problems. Serial and parallel performance scalings are also presented.

Resolving velocity space dynamics in continuum gyrokinetics

Many plasmas of interest to the astrophysical and fusion communities are weakly collisional. In such plasmas, small scales can develop in the distribution of particle velocities, potentially affecting observable quantities such as turbulent fluxes. Consequently, it is necessary to monitor velocity space resolution in gyrokinetic simulations. In this paper, we present a set of computationally efficient diagnostics for measuring velocity space resolution in gyrokinetic simulations and apply them to a range of plasma physics phenomena using the continuum gyrokinetic code GS2. For the cases considered here, it is found that the use of a collisionality at or below experimental values allows for the resolution of plasma dynamics with relatively few velocity space grid points. Additionally, we describe implementation of an adaptive collision frequency which can be used to improve velocity space resolution in the collisionless regime, where results are expected to be independent of collision frequency.
